Chokwich Falls, Mountain Loop Highway (exploring Washington's lost treasures)

Where is a good place to take a hike on a foggy, rainy, autumn day? To a waterfall! The waterfall we chose to explore is off the Mountain Loop Highway between Granite Falls and Darrington. It begins on the popular Elliott Creek-Goat Lake Trail. Most hikers head to Goat Lake via the Lower Elliott Creek Trail. We took the less popular Upper Elliot Trail to the unsigned, unmaintained, seldom hiked, Chokwich Trail which leads to Chokwich waterfall.
Many years ago, while hiking to Goat Lake, we passed a sign pointing to Chokwich Falls and promised to return someday and check it out. Today was that day! Had we not waited 15+ years to check it out, we probably would have had a much easier hike. From online reports, it appears the trail used to be suitable for biking. That would now be impossible!
If you ever want to feel “lost in the woods” without actually getting “lost in the woods” then this is the trail for you. It’s an old road bed with a steep hillside (sometimes rock cliff) to the south and a steep drop-off to the north. It would be near impossible to get lost since the only logical place to walk is on the old roadbed sandwiched between the rock wall and the ravine. Now, you may get tangled up in the low-growing blackberry vines, bump your head on the numerous fallen trees crisscrossing the trail, trip on a fallen branch, or slip on one of the moss-covered rocks, but getting lost would take considerable effort!
Is it Chocwich, Chockwich, or Chokwich: seems to be quite the discrepancy as to its correct spelling. I randomly chose the last spelling. Call it what you may, but it was a fun little outing for a dreary day.
