      Do you send Christmas cards to your Christian family, and do they send you Hanukkah cards? Do the Merry Christmas plastic bags at HEB grocery (hello, Texas!) bother you? Do you say "Thank you, you too," if a store employee says Merry Christmas to you? Do you miss Christmas?
      My great grandmother left Judaism for Christianity so we had kind of the opposite journey when I started digging into Judaism and decided it left me just empty and sad. I'm glad it works for you. I know my story is weird haha

    You are one of the very few moms on you tube that protect your children’s privacy. I applaud that, and really wish many other mom content creators would be mindful of this. It is admirable that you are protecting your family and not blasting their photos all over social media.

    Chana, I loved this video. I appreciate how you respect your children’s privacy. I wish more parents would do so. There are so many dangers out in the interest world(and the world in general). And YAY for the way you handled the homeschool day/schedule question. Flexibility is one of the best perks of it. When I was homeschooling my grandson, I loved the fact that our days were not structured in the way public school is, but we did a structural to our day. And when you don’t have to stop for 25+ kids to go to the bathroom, go to lunch, line up to go other classes it makes the day much shorter. We often ate lunch and had a lesson at the same time ( our read aloud time or watched a video related to a topic we were studying,)
    I am so looking forward to the rest of the Q&A.
    Have a blessed remainder of Chanukah and a restful, rejuvenating Shabbat.

    As a 1st grade teacher I think you’re doing more an enough for your children’s education. I live in the South and a few short years ago our state took naps out of kindergarten. There are days that I feel even 2nd-3rd graders need a nap. You’re eliminating that need by allowing them to wake up when they are ready. Great call, mom!

    • @jaroffireflies
      @jaroffireflies  5 месяцев назад +5

      Aw thank you so much! I appreciate that! Wow, taking naps away from kindergarteners! I think we could all use a break during the school day no matter what age. Its a long day for kids! Recess is fine and all, but rest is important too.

      @@jaroffireflies So true! I remember a few (ok, maybe more than a few 😂) days when I rocked for over an hour a couple of 1st graders who came into the classroom crying because they were so tired. I always tried to email my moms and let them know, “Hey, your sweetie was stressing this morning and crying so I’m rocking him/her and we will just make up the work down the road. It’s no big deal but your baby is resting in my arms.” Six year olds have the rest of their lives to be stressed out. First grade is not the place for that!

    Thank you for answering my questions. I also converted to Judaism but in Israel and there they asked me to do the pregnancy test, I don't know why, maybe it was something specific there because my husband is Israeli and we wanted to get married . It's very nice to live in a community where people like you and appreciate you, if not you feel isolated and it's much more challenging .In Israel, when I was in the process, the people in general were very nice and welcoming. In the place where we live now, the community doesn't like to accept converts. It's a Syrian community. We were going to Habad, but for example when I had my first daughter they didn't want to make Birkat Hagomel for us and it was the only place where they knew that I am a convert. In the end my husband did it in one of the other synagogues, but there they didn't know, they helped him because he is Israeli. Sometimes I go there for the holidays , but I don't talk to almost noone. My kids won't be accepted in the Jewish schools, only in the school of the Reform synagogue so they go to a normal school. It's not easy to give them really some good Jewish education. This how I found your channel, because I saw you are homeschooling .🙂 In the beginning I was very upset, but I learned to live like this and I don't pay attention anymore .
    Sure you will have a lot of fun in Israel. I am a big fan of the ice coffee there, it's very tasty and they sell it almost everywhere 😊. I hope that the war will finish soon and we will be able to travel to Israel. Let's pray for many miricles this Hanukkah, for all kidnapped people to come home and for the peace!

    Hi Chana! I always enjoy the questions people ask. My favorite today was the spray paint on the Sabbath question. I was laughing out loud. Several years ago I decided to spray paint my refrigerator red. It took 12 cans of paint to get the color I wanted. Even though I had shut the doors and taped everything off, the red paint pigment had precipitated all over the house, and my husband’s white cat. I cleaned up the house, and threw the once white now red cat into the tub. I washed him til the water ran clear, but now he was a lovely shade of pink! 😂 my husband was not amused. The cat stayed pink for a long time! My advice? No spray paint in the house the day before the Sabbath, the day after, or any day in between!

    You save many, many hours as a homeschooler because you are not having to stop every two minutes to stop unruly and/or dangerous behavior by children desperately seeking attention in a class of 35! Your children have a far better chance to keep the joy of learning permanently when they aren’t being forced into other people’s schedules and can take the time to explore ideas that they find attractive. Good for you!

You had once said that you always wanted to homeschool, but I am curious about your journey; surely as your family has grown schooling has changed. I think that people who have no experience with homeschooling don't think about the fact that because it is "one on one" or "one of few", the lessons are much more focused and more learning can happen in less time, than how the same lesson would be covered in a full classroom. You have demonstrated that you really plan out your lessons with great care. Thank you for sharing your life with us!

    I was homeschooled as a child in a similar way to your kids! We didn’t have a set wake-up time, our school didn’t take all day, and we were well educated! It can look haphazard compared to a structured public school day but if you consider that the children have one on one study time with their teacher for the whole lesson, and there are not other children distracting them it just doesn’t take the same amount of time!

    It's truly humbling having been accepted into the Jewish faith so completely. It was a difficult, lengthy conversion and I too have never felt less-than. Recently, I've been unable to sort out some comments made by Christian creators here on RUclips. I must always shore my heart back up by visiting my favourite Jewish RUclipsrs for comfort. I don't understand that excessive pride in thinking there's only one way to walk with God.
    I am grateful you don't include your children's countenance with us. I love many of my favourite creators children but I still do without needing to see them. It's truly not safe...the analytics I see are frightening regarding the viewers of family channels. It makes me queasy.
    Did you find your conversion mikveh to be extremely significant because mine will never fade away. It felt like such an accomplishment. Thank you so much for always lifting my spirits. ❤

    Hi Chana! Happy Hanukkah 🕎. Love the Q & A. Lots of good questions. Thank you for sharing. I have learned a lot about the Jewish culture and faith. I also think you are a fabulous teacher for your kids! Kudos for teaching 3 and soon in a few years 4 children. I worked as a teacher aide for 8 years and did substitute teaching. Getting kids to concentrate and work is hard . Just takes one rowdy child to blow everything. Love seeing snippets of the kids. Guess it takes me back to when my boys were little. My oldest is 43 and my youngest is 35.

    Hi Chana, it is good to keep your children private. My son has a RUclips channel . He started it when he was still a minor I told him he must never show his face or use his name or location. My son is disabled as you know and I would hate to have him be targeted. Even now he is 26 I told him to remain private . Only a few times his face has accidentally been shown in a reflection of his camera.

    My brain cannot comprehend not knowing your spouse’s degree 🤯 it seems elemental to knowing the person, their interests, motivations…so many things. Even if they didn’t use that degree for long, as I didn’t, it’s a key to understanding the different chapters of life.

I haven't been able to go in the last several years but that is what I would do first when I got there again, I pray Hashem makes a way for us to take our sons one day when they are older.

    Yes! I worked as nurse for kids going to school. Homeschooling covers everything. So much of the school day is spent wrangling kids, getting everyone quiet and admin. Out of an hour they may get a few minutes of actually teaching. Especially, younger kids. This is why older kids can often be starting college credits while home schooling.

    Very much enjoyed most of the questions. To the person who called this homeschool haphazard, you need to watch other homeschooling families. I’m a grandma and watch many homeschooling families. Chana is by far the most prepared and thorough in what her children learn. I myself would love to have my grandchildren taught in her home. Let’s not forget it’s the quality of an education, not the quantity. A benefit of homeschooling is you don’t have to punch a clock. You start what time of day suits you. Chana, I for one love your school. And, am quite sure the children do as well. Happy Hanukkah!

    Regarding choosing schools in Israel...that is part of the extensive prep that happens when Aliyah is planned, along with choosing a health plan, community, home, shul, child care, etc. Parents with young children have more research and decisions to make before Aliyah than we empty nesters do...yet it remains a major life-changing event for all of us, for the good.

    Thank you so much for answering my question! I hope that I didn’t offend by asking about your son 🫣
    I’m autistic, so I struggle with wording things right. I meant to ask if it was normal for it to take a while for a little one to be diagnosed. We’ve been waiting about a year for bloodwork for our 3.5 year old little guy, so I wasn’t sure if it’s the process or my son’s doctor’s office. I grew up as a military kid and had a new pediatrician every six months, plus my son (who’s my first kid) was born during lockdown, so my sense of “normal” for all things medical is a bit skewed lol 😂
    By the way, the way you handled the homeschooling question was awesome! I get a lot of questions about it too. People ask me a lot about why I don’t have my son doing 8 hours of preschool at home and I kind of stare at them blankly lol 😂

    • @jaroffireflies
      @jaroffireflies  5 месяцев назад +2

      I’m not offended! People ask pretty often about that and I would love to talk about it more for awareness but I’m also really careful about sharing about my kids ❤️ If you’re wondering if your child has type 1 diabetes, you can get a glucose monitor from the drug store or Amazon and test his blood sugar at home. And thank you for your kind words :)

      @@jaroffireflies I don’t blame you one bit on being cautious! I’m the same way with my son. I don’t post his pictures very often on Facebook- people can be creepy! 😱 I’ll definitely have to look into getting one of those for him. Basically the entire maternal side of my family except for my mom is Type 2. He doesn’t talk a lot like I did at that age, so I have to rely on a lot of external stuff like a monitor to know if something is wrong. Thank you for reminding me that they’re available over the counter; I completely forgot lol. It’ll give me so much peace of mind! ❤ And you’re very welcome! It really means a lot to hear a veteran homeschool mom stand up about what we do. There’s so many misconceptions out there about homeschooling and we need all the mythbusting that we can get! 😊

    My High School was from 8 am to 3 pm. I got very sick early in my Junior year and was home-tutored for the year. There were 1 1/2 hours a day of lessons 4 days a week to cover the entire year. I did not miss a thing and was fully ready for Senior year. I laughed when I heard people question your school time. When you are nearly 1 on 1 and focused you do not need hours and hours per day. My cousin’s now adult son was diagnosed T1D when he was about 12 months old. He was taken to his pediatrician for appearing unwell, blood test done, and he was immediately sent to a regional children’s hospital and stayed for about a week while he was stabilized and his parents learned all about his care and management, diet, etc. Her child grew up learning about his medical condition and self-management. At about five years old, he did his own injections, with supervision. At about nine years old, he started attending a summer camp that specialized in managing diabetes, which included all the regular summer camp stuff plus education about diabetes. As an older teen, he chose to be a camp counselor. I think he was a young teen when he got his first insulin pump.

      It was pretty scary for his parents, but they adjusted, and we always tried very hard to normalize the precautions needed to care for this child. This was prior to mobile phones, but when her son was old enough for school, she got a pager and had an understanding with his school to page her about anything. Once, when he was about 7 or 8, there was an incident at school and they thought he should go to the ER. My cousin answered the page, and was able to arrange for an ambulance to take the child directly to the pediatrician’s office, where she met him. He was stabilized and did not require hospitalization.

    Very interesting about the home schooling. I was educated in public schools ( about 100 years ago 😳) and there is so much wasted time. Kids go to school 6 + hrs then have hours and hours of homework. What did the hey do all day in class ? And when doing the homework that is when all the questions come up , and no one is available to ask questions of to get assistance. ( these days there is probably on line help , but in my day on line did not exist. If following a definite established curriculum probably the better of the two worlds

    Re the homeschool question: I think people suspect that there isn't much schooling going on because it is just a few hours each day, unlike standard school. But in a classroom, a lot of the day is spent waiting, or doing "busy work", while the one teacher works with one or a few of the students. Or everyone gets one assignment to do and then half the class has to wait for the other half to finish. There is a lot of time spent NOT learning, in a school setting, especially in the lower grades. At home, it's usually just a few kids with one teacher, and each child gets lots of individual attention, with lessons tailored to their needs. So more is accomplished in a much shorter time period.
