I think the hair grows back myth comes from misunderstanding what happens. Before you shave, you have soft hairs that are thin on the ends. Also, your hairs are different lengths. When you shave, everything is the same length and the hairs are wider with sharp edges. It's understandable that people will say this is more hair because it can feel that way. I think if it were explained this way, people would be able to understand. Just saying "it doesn't" won't make a difference because it contradicts their lived experience.

I’ve always been scared to try this, as a dark hair/pale faced woman, I’d wax my upper lip and eyebrows. I was always thinking it would grow back thicker. I rarely wear makeup, but now I’m 50 and I’m going to start trying this to make my face moisturizer work its best. Thank you so much!!

@@Yulia.chandrika Shaving does not cause hairs to grow in thicker. That is a myth. Hairs may appear thicker, but that is only because you've shaved off the thin end of the shaft and so that particular hair looks like it's growing in bigger. In reality, it is not bigger. Also, it will eventually fall out and be replaced with a hair of the same size, not a bigger one
@Dream Catchers, the “peach fuzz” type hair still feels soft as it grows back in. But if you shave the hair on upper lip or chin, or eyebrows, it does feel rougher as it begins to grow back in.
I have been shaving my face awhile, but I learned some tips not only about prep before but after. I am older and it seems my hair grows back faster but I always think of my Dad who used to say (he was scraping his face) because we are. I think the exfoliating of shaving is what keeps men’s face looking good if they do nothing else. Thanks!
But mine does come back thicker n darker I've been doing this for a very long time on my neck now I have to literally use a dry razor on my neck.. I can't imagine with my face
It’s about that time for me to do a facial shave. I just had my yearly actina keratosis treatment last month and won’t do anything while my skin is healing. This video was so timely. It’s good to know we have the same dry skin routine and the only thing I will add now is the 3rd micellar water cleanse. I try to shave the night before I won’t be wearing any makeup the next day. I just wear a soothing moisturizer and sunscreen. Thank you.
I have been shaving my face for 30 years. A Korean friend told me that Asian women have been doing it for centuries. I wash it with Vani Cream cleanser, rinse, add more, shave, rinse. Pat dry and use Vani Cream lotion. That's it. I have very sensitive skin but no problem. I usually do this in the shower.
I've been shaving my face and neck for about 20 years now (I'm 58) and I use a men's razor and shaving cream (to avoid the "pink tax"). But I really like these techniques too because it seems much gentler. My chin hair is naturally thick and hard so I often have to cover the same area multiple times with the razor to get all the hair off. This can aggravate my skin though so I'll try these tips. Thanks so much! :)
OMG why haven't I been doing this?? I notice my face has gotten hairier and rougher since turning 50 and going through menopause. I'm glad this is coming from a dermatologist. Thank you for sharing!!❤
I started to get more vellus hair after I turned 41. I'm just gonna keep it though as I don't mind. A dermatologist IRL told me that it plays a big part in protecting your skin from pollution as well!
I just started too about 3 months ago and absolutely love it! My face is so smooth afterwards. I wash my face as normal, I then apply rosehip oil & shave. Afterwards I wash my face again and apply my moisturizer.
I've never shaved my face. I didn't even know that was a thing for women until recently. I don't wear makeup either but would like my facial products to penetrate my skin better. Will definitely try this at home.
I've been shaving my face, arms, and legs for years. It does NOT grow back thicker, but it can seem like it did after a few days. Wait a few more. . .and it's the same as before. I think also the fact that you hear your whole life that it will grow back thicker is something like a placebo affect. If you believe something will be, you find that it is.
There is so much misinformation about this, so thank you for sharing! I have been shaving my face for a few years. Those vellus hairs became very noticeable when peri menopause began. I typically do it after showering at night, just because it lasts longer. I love how soft and smooth my skin is afterwards. My skin care and make up go on better as well.
I just asked about neck hair I have peach fuzz and hair on my neck , which direction do you find best for the neck area Hope you don’t mind me asking. Take care
@@karencurtis6141 Gently downward. But I also feel for hair vs smooth. Be super gentle. Neck skin is pretty tender. The under jaw both up and down, oh so gently and carefully.
I just started shaving my face. I was always told that if you do this your hair grows back thicker. Of late on YT I have seen influencers talk about shaving their face. I happened upon your video. I am so pleased I did because I learned a great deal about how to shave. Thanks for sharing this.
Yes, I’ve made many mistakes, the skin is not happy , wonder what the irritation is going to look like in 6 hours. I’ll be wiser next time. THANK YOU 💐💐💐
I just uses my regular shaver. It automatically has that 45 degree angle just by being the shaver. After I have exfoliated with sugar, then used an electric facial brush with cleanser for a couple of minutes, I towel dry, and ready to shave. I mostly focus around eyes and below. Love the way it feels so smooth. Creams and make up just glide on. I just started doing this here in the last few months and love it.
I used to have a lot of hair on my forearms until I hit perimenopause in my late 40s. And then virtually overnight - no more arm hair! Suddenly something I was self-conscious of all my life was no longer an issue! Same with pretty much all of my body hair - leg, armpit, and pubic - it's all but disappeared! EXCEPT.... IT RELOCATED TO MY FACE! LOL! Nature sucks.... Anyways, I have never shaved my face because I was always afraid it would come back thicker or I'd end up with a 5'oclock shadow. So this video is GREAT NEWS!! I am going to try shaving my peach-fuzzy cheeks and upper lip! I'll keep tweezing my chin, cuz those hairs are coarse and are getting fewer and fewer anyways over the years, and are quite satisfying to pull out by the roots...
This was so helpful. I bought a blade a while ago but haven't used it yet as I was nervous! I have PCOS so peach fuzz is one thing, but there are also the black under chin hairs and on the upper lip. Your video was so informative its given me more confidence to try it. Thank you! ❤
@@zoew1602hey did you give it a try? How's it going? I've got thick hair on my chin area courtesy of my hormone balancing (mirena) coil. Please let me know
i use a surgical blade to shave mine, and i’ve actually had less knicks with the sharper blade than a facial razor as you stated 😊 i prefer dry shaving as well!
I just bought a dermaplaning tool from Brandluxe & it resembles a nice straight razor but obviously a smaller blade. It works so much better than the cheaper plastic tools. It’s like a regular blade & doesn’t have those weird grooves that the disposable face razors usually have. I love it. I also prefer doing it dry.
Thank you for sharing. Had the blades in my drawer for weeks now, just didn’t know how to use them! With your tips I just gave it a go, I cannot stop looking at my face in the mirror now, it’s so smooth ❤
Sensitive skin here and I use Vaseline as the shaving barrier between my skin and the blade-works great! Before that I did dry shaving and broke out so highly recommend Vaseline!
Noooo don’t put Vaseline on your face! It’s basically petrol. Pretty much any kind of natural origin facial oil would be better than that, even just simple sweet almond oil.
It took me some sessions to get the hang of this cause it feels different than shaving legs or ampits and now I see what all the hype is about. My face feels amazing!!! So soft, like it can breathe, looks nice, smooth, and the moisturizer absorbed in better. A nice tingle. Love it. This was the best video I saw on it...followed the steps. Also cleansed my face first more thoroughly than normal. Feel like came from a spa or a facial. Used Walgreens brand of razors that looks just like this called Touch Up Razors. Wow, exfoliation feels great. Makes me wanna try body scrub.
Thank you for this video. I’m afraid to try, but you explained the process so well and showed us exactly how to do it. I have placed order and ready to try.
@@whenboredomstrikes6738 I’m not super prone to breakouts anyways but nothing noticeable. The only time I noticed breakouts were when I did it after the holidays when I had already been consuming a ton of sugar. So the breakout was more diet based rather than shaving. Hair hasn’t been any noticeably thicker either.
Ive done this for years, because i dont want to grow a beard. There was a really nice lady in town but bless her had a full beard i know now it was a medical issue but it made me very aware of the fuzz on my face
After dermaplaning, my skin felt clammy and wet constantly for about 2 weeks, even without any skincare products on after cleansing. My husband touched my forehead and said, "Ew, gross. What did you do? Why are you slimy?" Then, the stubble-feel started, which lasted about a week. It's been about 6 weeks, and my beautiful peach fuzz is nearly back. I'll be keeping it! I may do my upper lip and side of my nose now and then, but the rest of it will be staying. My makeup does not look better without the peach fuzz - it looks weird and unnatural. Everyone is different. Glad I tried it - now I know it's not for me. And I'm embracing the fuzz!
This video just came across .y feed for whatever reason and I'm floored that so many women are doing it....we aren't men!!! That peach fuzz is our God give protection from the daily elements, same as the hair on our arms (even though we shave our legs lol) At some point all of these women will wish they never tried it because who know down the road what skin issues they may encounter🤦♀️ I'm soooo glad you stopped! 🙏💖
I'm glad you noted that everyone's different because it's so true! For me it works really well - I've been shaving for about a decade. Mine grows back soft and my skin is softer and less likely to have pimples when I shave regularly. I'm glad you tried it and decided it wasn't for you rather than just writing it off!
I found a great battery powered face shaver for women. On Amazon, it’s pink and the reviews were good so I bought it. It’s great. No razors, wax, etc. it’s so easy it’s a relief.
I learned from You Tuber Kerry Lou, a makeup artist, that you can actually use a regular razor and cream to shave your face. It’s super easy and gets everything off. It’s best to use a new blade. Great tip to do at night followed by LED mask! Thanks for highlighting this.
I have a hormonal master, it is embarrassing, I use wax strips to use at home, while I’m at it, I do my area, (side’s of my face) I love how smooth my face looks. and them my moistures and creams that work for my skin. Thank you for your tips, I’m going to try your way also. 71 year old active woman.
That video was amazing for dermaplaning the first time! I watched beforehand and again as I did it - pausing along the way - and it went seamlessly. Thank you so much!
I’ve been shaving my upper lip since 1982 (a year into college). I had been bleaching my mustache with Jolen bleach (made for this), but one day that made me vomit. I got a high end man’s razor and started shaving with a thin moisturizer and I’ve never looked back! Now I use Tinkle razors and do my cheeks as well.
Even though the hair does not grow back thicker, it would very useful if you mentioned that it APPEARS to be thicker initially. It happens because the tip of hair thins out with time, so when you shave off that tip, you have the middle of your hair exposed which has the same thickness as at the root. This is more evident in hair on our heads as more times passes between each haircut compared to each shave on your face or legs: the ends get thinned out and a lot of people get split ends as a results, same happens in all rest of our body but it just isn't so evident. Moreover, for some people it happens more than for other, but that already depends on genetics, haircare/skincare and lifestyle.
I thought vellous hair was valuable in skin protection. I’m a peach fuzz face and I noticed something after I started using an RF/Red LED device 2x a week…. And my peach fuzz is NOT growing back !! I’m an ESTHETICIAN and always looking for good solutions for skin that do not injure the barrier and over exfoliate Be careful
It’s kind of sad that because of filters and editing in almost every picture everyone takes, people aren’t used to “texture” anymore. And certainly don’t appreciate that “texture” can be normal. I’m in my 30s and finally started “fixing” my skin last year. I dermaplane here and there for exfoliation because I use tret and sometimes the dry skin really sticks.
It makes a huge difference on make up !! We have to shave peach 🍑 fuzz off our faces as it collects foundations, powders & all !! I do once every other weeks & do every week on my elderly mom !! I shave / pluck her eyebrows every week for her ,too ! Lol. 👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
I tried it out last night. I didn’t have the right razors. I always find I’m a little itchy afterwards. But what I did get feels a lot softer. Next time it will be more of a success!
I learned the hard way that it’s best for my darker skin to dermaplane or shave after taking a few days off from any acids or retinoids as it may cause some hyperpigmentation
Thanks for the video. I never really thought about shaving my face because I'm blonde and have light haired peach fuzz, but now this totally makes sense because I have issues with getting my face moisturizer to rub in over certain spots. I'm going to try shaving the peach fuzz facial hair now!
I've tried the dry way and the oil way, but my fav is actually the Japanese method which is with a gel moisturizer! I use the Illiyoon gel and it helps to soothe the skin and also it allows me to know exactly where I missed a spot. Random question but have you heard of high frequency wands? I keep seeing those products on Amazon and people say it's amazing for acne. But I have trouble finding the actual science behind it!
High Frequency Wand uses gas (red) wave or neon (blue) wave electrodes to penetrate the skin. The benefits of gas (red) help stimulate collagen and provide circulation to grow hair, or help with dull stagnant and/or congested skin …and the (blue) neon is best for oily congested skin even with the problematic hormonal cystic acne or bacterial acne…which can heal faster through it’s antimicrobial and/or oxygenating high frequency. I’m a Clinical and Holistic Master Aesthetician/Nutritionist of 28+ years and I use high frequency as a basic staple for nearly all skin types…including Acne Rosacea if used properly and gently. You can use a gauze strip mask or thin gauze 4x4 to serve as a barrier and increase oxygen flow of the high frequency electric current. I encourage everyone I work with to purchase their own high frequency products if they are dealing with any kind of acne. It is a life saver!!!✨
Thank you for sharing this info with the youngs. I learned 30 years ago that Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor (and many other film stars) shaved regularly because of the makeup they had to wear and the way peach fuzz photographs. I get by with every 3-4 weeks and very seldom see clogged pores. Grrl power, spread the word!
The misconception that the hair grows thicker is a funny one. Your hair is tapers before you cut it/shave it but when you cut/shave it you are removing the taper end so the thicker "looking" a.k.a. chopped off part looks thicker but it eventually tapers...so is does not grow back thicker, it only looks thicker for a bit until the tips thins out/tapers naturally.

This is the best video on face shaving! I used to shave my face and then went to waxing. Now that I'm on Retin A I can't wax anymore, so it's back to shaving. You gave some awesome tips! It's amazing how soft your skin can feel after shaving like that! And i agree - it is SO satisfying to see the hair and gunk come off your skin. I love that part! ❤
I shaved my face and when I woke up the next day my entire face was COVERED in small pimples. I had washed and prepped well, even let it rest a bit after in case that caused any irritation. It was awful & I've been scared to try it again!
I'm so sorry😥 Any tips for a first timer? I think I want to do it so bad because my facial hair are fine, thin but BLACK in colour. So even if they're not noticeable they kinda are because they're so dark. I also have peach fuzz blonde fine hair which I do not have a problem with but it's the darker hair that's noticeable 😩
WOW, I’m 52 and I’ve never shaved my face so I really needed this video. I’ve had my face waxed numerous times though, but not sure how much of a difference these 2 are? I happen to have a pack of the razor you used so now I’m going to cautiously try it. Thanks for a great tutorial today!
I just started shaving my face! I love it! I used to wax, but by the time the breakouts cleared up I had hair again! Plus I’ve heard that waxing is kind of hard on your skin. The problem I have are my post menopausal chin hair! Sheesh! Those hairs are super coarse and just seem to grow overnight! How often is too often?
Not a dermatologist, but since shaving has an exfoliant effect, and you're not supposed to exfoliate more than twice a week as a rule of thumb, I would assume that you should not shave more than twice a week at max. Less if you're doing other types of exfoliation
I shave dry with a little dermaplane blade to remove peach fuzz and dry skin flakes, but those coarse chin hairs I tweeze out. After you’ve done that for a few years, fewer of them will grow back.
Thank you so much for your video. I have been aghast at the amount of hair coming in on my face and no one is taking me seriously on my distress. Electrolysis is just too expensive. This will work!!!!!
Getting ready to do this for the first time in my 40s. These tips were so helpful. I probably would have botched everything up if I just went for it without researching first 😂
I've been waxing my face for years, never tried shaving. It would be easier to shave but I guess regrowth will happen faster? Great instructive video, thank you, Dr Sam.
Could you please do a video on toners and essence. What's the difference between them? If you need to use any of those things? And how to include them into your skincare routine?
Is it okay to wax the peach fuzz? Also, people who suffer from PCOS tend to have excessive hair growth on face? What would be the appropriate method to get rid of it apart from shaving?

@Dream Catchers, the “peach fuzz” type hair still feels soft as it grows back in. But if you shave the hair on upper lip or chin, or eyebrows, it does feel rougher as it begins to grow back in.
I have been shaving my face awhile, but I learned some tips not only about prep before but after. I am older and it seems my hair grows back faster but I always think of my Dad who used to say (he was scraping his face) because we are. I think the exfoliating of shaving is what keeps men’s face looking good if they do nothing else. Thanks!
I am SO FUZZY! I have been petrified to try this out of fear of it coming back darker / thicker/ longer! Thank you so much for this video!!!!!!
Hair coming in thicker after shaving is a old wives tale.
But mine does come back thicker n darker I've been doing this for a very long time on my neck now I have to literally use a dry razor on my neck.. I can't imagine with my face
Shaving doesn't make hair come in darker/thicker. Hormones affect body/facial hair. I developed thick hairs when I went through menopause
This video is excellent. Your directions were clear and very helpful.
Thank you.
I shaved my face dry in the last 5 years and maybe once every 3-4 weeks, I agreed with Ann, it doesn't grow back thicker or darker. Love your video!
No and neither does the hair on your legs but I’d no sooner shave those than my face.
Has it helped you face look smoother and younger?
Yes, with or without make up, the skin looks so clean!@@lilarose9348
I always use men’s razors. I feel like they work better as well as being a little cheaper.
I love comprehensive demos!!! More of these please!!
I had those shavers, then having no idea proper way to use them! You’re such a godsend. TYVM!
I feel like I’ve been waiting years for a demo like this from a skin expert…thx!❤
Thanks I’ll share w my teen. She had acne so glad you mentioned not shaving over acne.
I've never shaved my face. I didn't even know that was a thing for women until recently. I don't wear makeup either but would like my facial products to penetrate my skin better. Will definitely try this at home.
I’m happy to know I’m not the only one that shaves my face!😍
I've shaved my face once a month ever since you mentioned it a while back. I finish with an AHA and never is my skin nicer than the next day.
💕
What is an AHA?
@@mycharmedunicorn8715 alpha hydroxy acid...lactic, mandelic, glycolic. They are chemical exfoliants.
I also do my jawline and neck. There’s more peach fuzz under my jaw than anywhere else. It’s the best finish for me. Thank you for this video.
I just asked about neck hair I have peach fuzz and hair on my neck , which direction do you find best for the neck area
Hope you don’t mind me asking. Take care
@@karencurtis6141 Gently downward. But I also feel for hair vs smooth. Be super gentle. Neck skin is pretty tender. The under jaw both up and down, oh so gently and carefully.
i was looking for advice on this-- thanks!
Make sure to ideally go in the direction of the hair growth to avoid any ingrown and provide less irritation. :)
I just started shaving my face. I was always told that if you do this your hair grows back thicker. Of late on YT I have seen influencers talk about shaving their face. I happened upon your video. I am so pleased I did because I learned a great deal about how to shave. Thanks for sharing this.
Didn’t know that you could use oil! Great tutorial!
Yes, I’ve made many mistakes, the skin is not happy , wonder what the irritation is going to look like in 6 hours. I’ll be wiser next time. THANK YOU 💐💐💐
Thank you. Really appreciate that info about hair not growing thicker by shaving. Whew. It’s very good tip for smooth skin 👍🏼
Renee, those hairs on your chin aren't from your body. They are just your eyebrows finding a new place to grow...🤣
@@dede8250 Hahaha!😂🤣🧔♀
did it appear great?
This was so helpful. I bought a blade a while ago but haven't used it yet as I was nervous! I have PCOS so peach fuzz is one thing, but there are also the black under chin hairs and on the upper lip. Your video was so informative its given me more confidence to try it. Thank you! ❤
Can you leave a comment after you try it. I have about 3 or 4 chin hairs. I am afraid to try it.
@@sl8605 sure, most likely the weekend. I normally use tweezers, but this seems better.

i use a surgical blade to shave mine, and i’ve actually had less knicks with the sharper blade than a facial razor as you stated 😊 i prefer dry shaving as well!
@@topchic7475 Vaseline is good for most wounds, dermatologist recommended.
Thank you for the tips, Dr. Ellis! 👏 Also, you look like the late beautiful Carolyn Bassette Kennedy. 🤩
Just tried this as per your instructions and my face feels soooo soft!! Thanks for all the great tips
Hey how was the hair growth after shaving?did u had any breakouts?
S0 glad i read this. Validating!
Shaving makes hair grow back darker and thicker
@@lisapounder1950 and then they go back to the same dermatologists for Lazer hair removal 💰💰💰💰💰😁
Dr Dray has said that in a video as well.
@maureenturk8578 can I ask why the LED mask? Will this help with the hair not growing back in?
me too! i’ve been shaving my face for 30 years , once or twice a week 😊
Thank you! My HMUA artist recommended I do this step before my wedding, and your tutorial was so easily broken down and helpful!!

I’m Arab so I’m very hairy I cut myself on accident a few times when I shaved my face for the first time
That video was amazing for dermaplaning the first time! I watched beforehand and again as I did it - pausing along the way - and it went seamlessly. Thank you so much!
It's not really dermaplaning, you have to do that as a medical procedure in an office.
I’m an ESTHETICIAN and always looking for good solutions for skin that do not injure the barrier and over exfoliate
Be careful
It’s kind of sad that because of filters and editing in almost every picture everyone takes, people aren’t used to “texture” anymore. And certainly don’t appreciate that “texture” can be normal. I’m in my 30s and finally started “fixing” my skin last year. I dermaplane here and there for exfoliation because I use tret and sometimes the dry skin really sticks.
Thanks for showing the right way to dermaplane
It makes a huge difference on make up !! We have to shave peach 🍑 fuzz off our faces as it collects foundations, powders & all !! I do once every other weeks & do every week on my elderly mom !! I shave / pluck her eyebrows every week for her ,too ! Lol. 👍💜🥁🐉🎤🎶💞
I really appreciate your advice.....I've only just started shaving my face and have loved the results.
I tried it out last night. I didn’t have the right razors. I always find I’m a little itchy afterwards. But what I did get feels a lot softer. Next time it will be more of a success!
I’ve never seen your channel before & I love it. Also, your bone structure……not fair. Lol! It’s gorgeous!
Thanks for this video!
You are so gorgeous - just as beautiful after you washed your face. Your skin looks AMAZING!!
I absolutely love shaving my face! thanks for the tips!
I learned the hard way that it’s best for my darker skin to dermaplane or shave after taking a few days off from any acids or retinoids as it may cause some hyperpigmentation
I shaved my face once! I will never do it again! The stubble was horrible! Better to wax or just leave it alone!
Me too. 😢
As a most menopausal womam who has Hashimoto's I have been shaving my lip and chn area since my 20's. I always shave at night. Recently I startes shaving my face to renew my skin and loved the resullts.
I use fresh aloe gel from my plant!
I am so glad I ran across this video, I have so much peach fuzz that I never noticed until a few days ago when the sun was in my face ( just as you said) I have never done it because I always thought It would grow back thicker, thank you so much for clarifying :):):)
Can I use my actives after the dermaplaning? Retinoid, Tranexamic acid, etc?
WOW, I’m 52 and I’ve never shaved my face so I really needed this video. I’ve had my face waxed numerous times though, but not sure how much of a difference these 2 are? I happen to have a pack of the razor you used so now I’m going to cautiously try it. Thanks for a great tutorial today!
I got tired of paying someone. So easy to do and happy to see wedo it the same. Only difference I bring it all the way down my neck.
Well! I frickin did it. I've been avoiding it for some time but your tutorial made it seem safe. Let's hope that's the case.
Thank you Dr. Sam very helpful this is going to be my first time. I’m a little nervous but I’m glad to have your guidance
Thank you so much for your video. I have been aghast at the amount of hair coming in on my face and no one is taking me seriously on my distress. Electrolysis is just too expensive. This will work!!!!!
THANK YOU!!! my skin looks and feels fantastic!! will definitely refer to this video again.
How about shaving below the chin and neck area??? Yes or No
I’m so scared of doing this… I took some medications in the past that gave me more than fuzzy hair… I will try following these steps 🎉
Could you please do a video on toners and essence. What's the difference between them? If you need to use any of those things? And how to include them into your skincare routine?
She did one in 2021 called Skin Care products you don’t need,
So of you take a shower, should it be after you prepare your face for shaving or before preparing your face for shaving?
Is it okay to wax the peach fuzz? Also, people who suffer from PCOS tend to have excessive hair growth on face? What would be the appropriate method to get rid of it apart from shaving?
Ok to wax! Certain meds can decrease facial hair growth (worth a discussion with your derm or ob/gyn) as well.
