- In this video I show you how I made a set of easy DIY wood coasters from some hardwood scrap. It is a quick project that makes a perfect gift for friends and family.👇 Links to tools/materials below👇

The coasters are made from 4 different types of wood. Oak, Walnut, Sapele and an unknown species which I think might be Idigbo - please let me know in the comments if you recognise it.

BUILD PROCESS
Each wood is cut into strips, glued together and then cut into 100mm squares before having a bevel put on the edges. After sanding and applying OSMO finish they are done!

I love how simple these are. That was a brilliant idea to avoid snipe with the planner! I am definitely going to steal that the next time I use it. I just made a set of coasters for the first time, I'm happy with how they came out, just not sure how I want to finish them yet.

Thank you! They are called parallel clamps - these ones are sold by Axminster Tools in the UK 👍
What was the final thickness?
With the oil finish, did it work well with hot cups? No sticking, like a resin finish?
It has been fine so far 👍 Although this is OSMO PolyX which is an hard wax oil blend so has a bit more protection than oil on its own. This is my first time using it but other woodworkers have had good longer term success. I'm hoping they will continue to last for me too 🤞👌
They turned out really nice. What thickness did you end up with for the coasters?
Thank you 👍 I was originally aiming for 10mm but settled on 8mm in the end after they felt a little too thick 👌 The bevelled edges make them feel even thinner so to be honest 10mm would have probably been fine

What was the purpose of the wooden strips taped to their sides before going into the planer?
They help prevent snipe 👍

I'm going to go with Idigbo. It should be either that or Ash but I cannot find any images of Ash that look close 🤷♂️

@@anthonyrodriguez7936 I originally thought this too but it is not very dense, about the same as oak. That being said I have never seen Hard (or soft!) Maple before so I have not point of reference 🤷♂️

what sort of dimensions did you use for the coasters? what is your typical source for wood?
100x100x10 size for the coasters. I mostly get it from eBay 👌
@@mikeparsonscc The wood that you get you need to cut down or plane yourself from there usually I imagine. What sizes do you like to start with?
@@bitsurfer0101 I like to buy offcut packs because I don't need large boards. It works out cheaper but they are not a consistent size so yes, everything needs milling down 👌
Is the OSMO heat resistant? I want to make some coasters for some ardent coffee drinkers but unsure if they will get marked by heat - appreciate any kind of heads up!
So far I have had no issues with marks from the heat of mugs or water rings 👌 It's what I use on the ones I sell too - no complaints there either 👍
