Scrap wood coasters are fun and easy to make! Let me show you how to make these DIY wooden coasters complete with a box to hold them in!
After making the coffee table for my parents about a week ago, I knew they needed some wooden coasters to go along with the table! Luckily, I had plenty of scrap wood left over to make these coasters!

Tip for sanding, IKEA has bar matting in stock and it's cheep, you can lay it down and it's none slip and very durable. It's like a open net so let's material threw it. I've a load of it for sanding on the bench to avoid scratching and also for securing stock when storing it so they don't slid around in transport.
Nice to finally see someone using a table saw and router table safely and correctly 👍
Use double-sided tape on the back of your coasters and stick it down to the bench. Then sand the coaster tops.
Sanding that wood for the coaster before cutting it would help make it easier to sand probably
We all have problem at times. I have been working with wood for over 60 years and still hit a bump in the road sometimes. Very good video.
Plans? For making a 4x4 in. square? How will you ever get sufficient detail onto paper?

I felt the same way about making a video about it. This would get you an “F” in old 7th grade wood shop.
Thought the same. I understand that there need to be beginner projects but come on.
Nice idea for left over scrap wood! If you reverse the board on each pass over the table saw blade when resawing both halves with be perfectly equal in thickness!
For sanding, build a small fixture to hold the coaster. For instance, if the coaster is 1/2” thick (random number), then using a plywood base or whatever, build a three-sided border around the coaster using 7/16” strips. This will hold the coaster securely, while allowing the sander to only contact the coaster face.
If desired, then add anti-slip cabinet liner to the bottom. Just be sure to adjust the border height to accommodate the anti-slip thickness.
If the sander is too big for the bit of wood, either do it by hand or if you feel you have to use a power tool then clamp it in a vice or get a suitable sized version.
Perfect way to end that video 😂 I feel the same way when people start to set drinks down on stuff I’ve built 😂

I know the video is older, but another tip (sorry if it's a repeat, I'm not reading 3yrs of comments lol) Use painters tape on bottom, and on a table. Glue the tape together with CA glue and an accelerator, just peel off when finished. Just a little CNC trick for keeping stuff still.
Great idea and presented in a really down to earth manner. I have some worm wood Cherry that will work perfectly. Thanks for showing that we aren’t the only woodworkers who end up with bloopers in our attempts. Keep up the great work. I’ll be one of many watching.

sell your harvey miter gauge, your rockler router lift, and your grrrrrrrrripper, and you should have enough money for a non-ridiculous table saw.
Wooden coasters don’t work. The condensation from glass sticks to coaster then slips off into your lap or floor.
Should have inlayed a cork disc on the coasters. But that would have been considerably more work 🤷♂️
I know this is a really late post, but if you're making the coasters in any volume, why not make a fixture out of crappy big-box store plywood that's thinner than the coasters, or maybe from those cheap stir sticks they sell? That way you can sand an entire batch at once in no time.

Hi what is the table saw setup called how much are they
Would it work if you used a silicone rubber matt to "hold" small pieces while trying to sand them? I'm thinking of the "18X28 inch Non-Slip Rug Underlay" sold in Dollar Tree for $1.25. You can cut it to fit your needs.
Just curious - why did you not use the belt sander on your oscillating spindle sander to sand the panels rather than having to deal with the random orbital sander?
And I researched a little bit and found that belt sanders are really best for shaping and not for fine surface sanding.
Beautiful work . . . . but not very practical. The sweat from a glass will run down to the coaster, then drip onto the table - especially due to the polyurethane.
It’s a great project and all but I’m here for the rheingeist tshirt. Great brewery.

Great idea with the resaw..didn't think of that and don't have a band saw so I bought 1/4 thick hobby wood from HD and made mine like that
To sand small pieces. I put painters tape on my work bench. Then painters tape on the object. Put CA glue on tape and bond. Holds well. When done just break the bond on the painters tape

Carpenter pencils illegal? I didn't like like the safety of that clutch pencil. For the sanding, lazy Suzanne. Most grandmas have 5 extras - friends grandma if you don't have one
Sandpaper doesn't seem to bother me, it actually kind of tickles. 😮
For sanding them (once they're already small) would recommend trying a 1/3 sheet (or similar) sander; something that goes back+forth as opposed to circular. Wear work gloves (protect hands from sandpaper and to give yourself better grip) and you can actually have the sander upside-down and just hold the coaster in your hand; pressing it lightly against the sander. There may be better ways to do this, I only recently started a similar project and am working with what I have. But the 1/3 sheet sander with back+forth motion seemed far more doable for me than the circular.
If it’s working for ya, go for it. Just be careful because those sheer sanders tend to leave noticeable scratch patterns
@@SpencleyDesignCo I'm not terribly worried about that myself seeing as prior to doing any real coasters I'm actually making coaster sized swatches, sanding to prep before burning the surface to a crisp (black is my favorite color, +I appreciate texture), after which I'll be trying out various finishes (including resin; Blacktail Studios has done that+it looks gorgeous). So in my case little scratches won't be bothersome. But is a very valid point for those who won't be burning the wood. I just found the 1/3 sheet sander seems more willing to cooperate with the little wood squares. Obviously I'm still learning though!

Coasters are legit a pain to sand 🤣 I usually just plan it on the finish setting now (helical head upgrade helps) and then just finish by hand 🤷🏻♂️
Oh they’re absolutely a nightmare! That’s why I stay far far away from production work 🤣
Use rubber bands to hold it together.

🌭Hot dog 🌭Was hunting around RUclips for some coaster holder ideas today and randomly found this old video of yours. Thanks, I think I will incorporate parts of your design and build process into my coaster gifts this season. For some reason or other I have struggled with miter joints, but had never thought to use a 45 degree router bit to take the stupidity out of the equation. I also liked the finger hole designed to match the smallest spindle on the sander and make that process that much easier! Can't wait for your next video to drop. Keep up the good work!
I used poly and the surface sticks with a hot coffee. Also the surface has completely boiled up when left in sun

Precisely why I use oil and wax finishes on projects such as these. Plus polyurethane will turn yellow or fade in sunlight.
Ok I'm a little slow, but I could not get my sander to make the smooth hole, what grit do you use? I've seen continents move faster than what I was getting done
I used 80 grit
Not sure why more people don't use the router for miters. Its a good idea i don't think I'd actually seen before.
Thanks for checking out the video, Nathan! For a lot of folks, I think it has to do with not having a router table. Also, as the thickness of the material increases, the size of the router bit has to increase even more. If you want to do 3/4 material, you have to have a pretty large bit!
Not that these are that bad, but let's just say you've improved a lot 3 years later.

We’ll I’ve got my coasters made and after several fails on using router for 45• edges of coaster holder, how the heck you set it up to cut the 45’s?
