Huge thanks to legend Marcus Miller for chatting with us & our friends at Jim Dunlop USA for helping make this event a reality! Hit those like and subscribe buttons 👍
Mitch did stay out of his way. I did feel a few times like Marcus Miller was sharing some great insights and after a few minutes of explanation, Mitch would say only "right" and not even with a capital R. An example is at 38:36, when after the very interesting, heartfelt definitions of great artist and great producer Mitch's response didn't feel like he heard that answer. I've been watching Mitch for over a decade making these videos so I'm a fan regardless.
THIS!! I came to comment this exact same thing. Such an amazing interview, and only because he just let Marcus go and get all the way through his thought. Especially in the development of Marcus’ tone and playing development. You can edit after if things get long winded. I wasn’t subbed before, but I am now.
Amazing you came and commented. He has inspired so many bass players and other musicians of today, thanks for helping to shape him into the amazing artist he is today.
This is one of the best interviews I've heard from a player of his caliber. Marcus really gave practical information for musicians of all levels. Great job.
Wow. What an interview. Everything you need to hear in 45 minutes, delivered with such humility and practicality. His enjoyment of playing is what moves you the most. Every note Marcus plays seems to come from deep within!
he describes and lives the creative process in such an organic & intuitive way that even a visual artist like myself understands and finds inspiration.
Great timeless players of any instrument share a common thread - They give the song what it needs, rather than using it to showcase their playing abilities.
Math you, well said! Loved your commented! Marcus Miller seems to be one of those rare artists--and human beings in general-who has a strong sense of who he is and he inspires others because of that. He's very poised and has, as I perceive anyway, an innate sense of how to relate to others and how to make those around him better at what they do. He interviews others well also--those aforementioned attributes have made him a natural at interacting with others. We need 10 million more just like him! 😃 Thank you and God bless you and all!
I've been a bassist for nearly 4 decades and always knew of Marcus Miller but never had an intimate experience like this to really get a feel for him as a person as well as a player. What a good dude and solid musician. Thank you Sweetwater for these interviews. So much inspiration here.
Thanks Marcus, for breaking down and intelligent look at technique, style, and especially rhythms(oh yeah)! Every bass player should hear this...grateful!!
Just watching this brother play "jungle boogie" with such attention and respect to that feel, shows what makes him so damn good..... Less notes means more feel... What a truly generous sharing of experience Thank you both
Marcus is dropping serious knowledge in this presentation. I'm also loving the sound the Sire bass he's playing; it sounds darn near identical to his legendary Roger Sadowsky-modified Fender Jazz Bass. Very cool, thanks for posting.
Marcus Miller. DAYUM. He was the first cat I looked to in the beginning of the 90’s when I wanted to SERIOUSLY learn bass guitar. I was aware of him and Stanley Clark and Louis Johnson as the real technique monsters. When he came out with his instructional videos he did for guitar center around that time I just wore those tapes out! What a legend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Back in 1977 in Boston I went to see Tower & Power at the Orpheum Theatre. Lenny White had a quartet as a warm-up band. Really getting more than your money’s worth in those times. There was a young bassist playing in White’s band. Hard to take your eyes off him he was already that good. Years later somehow I was drawn back to that night only to learn it was none other than Marcus Miller. Followed him ever since. He never steered you wrong. Even in college we’d go to the town record store in Amherst, Mass, buying the latest fusion-type record and my friends and I would immediately look for his name in the credits. He was early 20’s and ubiquitous in the music scene of the time. Just a remarkable talent.
Saw him at Catalina Jazz Club in LA right before covid shut everything down, night before Kobe’s memorial, I’ve been to 100s of concerts, but Miller and that band that night was so unreal powerful I couldn’t believe my ears. Met em all after the show, unreal down to earth cats, wonderful night, God bless Marcus
I laughed out loud when he started playing with the looper. That was a lifetime of lessons rolled into one. And talk about a great attitude and a complete musician! And I loved his story about his 'Pops'! Any kid learning to play an instrument should watch this every day. MY kid will! Lol
Been listening to his bass playing since the early eighties, and don't know much about music theory but listening to his interview he truly a master of his craft, he knows his stuff.
We lost Jaco but we still have Marcus Miller. Most educational bass video I have ever listened to. Marcus is pouring out the knowledge and the immense experience.🤔🤔🤔. And, playing it all with his namesake Sire!…😎😎😎.
Absolutely important interview and kudos to Mitch for making it happen. Marcus Miller is my all time favorite MUSICOLOGIST ever since I heard him on the pivotal " Never Too Much " by Luther Vandross and " Star People " by Miles Davis. I have listened extensively to Mr. Miller over the years as evidenced in my collection of the projects that he has been involved in especially such notables as Bernard Wright, Lenny White, The Brecker Brothers, Dave Valentin, George Benson, Grover Washington, Kevin Eubanks, Lonnie Liston Smith, Jamaica Boys, Tom Browne, Bob James, Joe Sample amongst many others. Ultimately and without a doubt, attending a Marcus Miller live performance is the ESSENCE.
I have seen and listen to many Marcus interviews over the years. This is the best one in my opinion. You pulled the best out and just let Marcus open up and not only give us a history ; but also educate. Thank you ;thank you;thank you!!
great interview! Marcus is a nice guy, beyond his outstanding skills as a musician, and in addition he is able to share really interesting stuff with the audience. I have seen the whole video without skipping a single second of it. Thanks for the good job!
Thanks. Great Interview. Enjoyed the genius of Marcus Miller. He's a bit modest too. He played on stage with Myles Davis. I first met him onstage during the soundcheck at an NYC Broadway Theatre Concert. I was invited by guitarist Mike Stern and I remember Marcus being very generous with his time too. I happily enjoyed Myles' famous back as I stood in awe surrounded by such greatness.
Missed this live but so awesome to hear Marcus in this way. I have loved him for years. Saw him with Miles years ago at Fairfield Halls, Croyden and since then a couple of times at the Royal Festival Hall. So very talented and so humble. A fine example of humankind. Was going to see him last year at Alexandra Palace but of course it was cancelled. What a guy!!!!!!
Marcos how do you decide what key to play in or can you use different one , What is your advi e for someone that is green with learning to play the bass?
Great interview of a great player. I saw Marcus live about 3 years ago and was blown away. Don't miss him if you get the chance. He's a legend, but still at the top of his game.
Yes ! This brother has a lot of versatility. Because, of his experiences. And, what i enjoy about his advice to musicians - In my words ! Every musician may have A Super Gift to offer rather it be vocals, instruments. Or, just being good as A Self Song Writer. - Or, Helping others. My foot note : Watching this video it seems like Marcus Miller is a person who don't hide his knowledge to help others or even when he's learning from musicians whom he seeks. " Beautiful Brother ".
I don't understand why we need to see Mitch staring weirdly at the camera instead of a full screen of Marcus. He's doing the right thing by not interjecting a lot but what purpose does it serve to see him if he's not talking? We aren't gonna forget he's there
This is one of the Greatest artist that I have in my collection! I have been listening to Marcus for 50+ years, and didn’t realize it for the first 10 years. The more I learn about the artist that he influenced, and was influenced by. I realize that he has influenced me for most of my life... And I so look forward to his next release. Of whatever, and with whoever. Thank You Marcus!!!
Mitch, you even took your visual out of the video frame when Marcus was jamming at 24:11, that’s a classy move. You understand it’s about the interview subject, and that’s why I dig all of your interviews!
Thank you for this wonderful interview and playing demonstration / performance of Marcus Miller. Like you said Marcus, I am also blessed to be an elementary school music teacher and wake up to create and perform music with my students.
I am a average Bassist. But I truly love the instrument. My love of music is al the way from the 60 s till present. I always loved listening to Bassist of all genres ( Graham, VWhite-EWF,B Edwards, Boosty, Jerry Jemoalt, Grand Funk, Billy Cox, Grand Funk Railroad, Rare Earth ETC. But Musicianship,Tone,GROOVE esp when he plays behind Other Artist( B James, Joe Sample,D Sanborn ETC) Ive learned so much About Musicianship from this Man. THE CONSUMMATE MUSICIAN!!
this is one of the greats - this is history told by the man himself. Kudos to Marcus. Only two players that we can say the first name and we all know who I is - Jaco and Marcus
Was fun to watch. I used to play a little slap bass. Really enjoyed it. Liked the illustrations. Bass comes natural to a 🎸 player. Matter of fact I bought a zoom guitar pedal from Sweetwater which gave bass sounds and other sounds .I seem to remember it having slap bass.
OMG... Wow Master Class...! I'm a drummer and this is Pure Gold, I love MM, not really bias we share the same family name ;o) lol. He is bang on the nail regarding drummers groovin in different ways. and GW Mister Magic is one of my favourite all timers.
The cat that told him about tone wish he was around here to teach me .I love his tone . Didn’t know who was playing I just knew that’s what I wanted to sound like
That was a really informative interview! He articulated what he wanted to say very well, there wasn’t a lot of filler. I’m sure he would have been a great educator, if he had chosen that academic path. One thing that made me laugh was when he said about being judge for his size by other players when he was coming up. Mr. Miller maybe an average sized man, but he’s got some huge mitts on him! You could see how easy it was for him to mute the E string with his thumb of his left hand while playing the upper three strings.
holy shit, such an enlightening conversation to me, on many levels love that marcus recorded his setup from his end, hearing him clearly play bass as he talks just adds so much to what he is saying be my love is one my favourites still!

Thank you Mitch for letting Marcus speak without interruption.
That’s one secret of a good interview!
I couldn't agree more...excellent work all round
I feel he is one of the best Interviewers out there. Check out his interviews with Boost and Cory Wong too!

Marcus was always a special person. Even with a broken leg he came out to perform. Only student who I gave a report card mark of 100!
You're the schoolteacher he mentions in the vid !
@@bryanleigh6497 yes I am. I was and am thrilled with Marcus
Amazing you came and commented. He has inspired so many bass players and other musicians of today, thanks for helping to shape him into the amazing artist he is today.
wow that's awesome you're here commenting :)
Bless you Mr Guarino!
What I got from this interview is Marcus just enjoys making music. No matter what the genre is.
This is one of the best interviews I've heard from a player of his caliber. Marcus really gave practical information for musicians of all levels. Great job.
yeah now the hard task is finding the musicians who listened xD
Wow. What an interview. Everything you need to hear in 45 minutes, delivered with such humility and practicality. His enjoyment of playing is what moves you the most. Every note Marcus plays seems to come from deep within!
Right? That is the most enlightening 45 minutes of musical inspiration I've ever taken in.
he describes and lives the creative process in such an organic & intuitive way that even a visual artist like myself understands and finds inspiration.
he looks about half his age
Beacuse he is happy Man with his music :)
This was one of the best interviews ive seen on the channel.

I love his energy for music and life.

Marcus is the complete musician. One of my all time favourites!! 👍🏾💯
Thanks Marcus, for breaking down and intelligent look at technique, style, and especially rhythms(oh yeah)! Every bass player should hear this...grateful!!
The list of this man's credits would shock people. He's low key and humble but he's contributed more to modern music than most people will ever know.
Just watching this brother play "jungle boogie" with such attention and respect to that feel, shows what makes him so damn good.....
Less notes means more feel...
What a truly generous sharing of experience
Thank you both
My god, watching Marcus' face while he plays is a thing itself.
Marcus is dropping serious knowledge in this presentation. I'm also loving the sound the Sire bass he's playing; it sounds darn near identical to his legendary Roger Sadowsky-modified Fender Jazz Bass. Very cool, thanks for posting.
good eye Richard I didn't notice till I read your comment. His 77 and Signature are both different as well. He did keep the head stock out of sight
@@willieelliott352 I noticed that but after watching, I do not think it was intentional. You could see it was not his Fender.
I also noticed he has it upgraded with a Hipshot bridge it looks like.
@@willieelliott352 I noticed that as well not sure if he was doing that on purpose tho, the sire are great basses!!

Marcus is such a gracious guest full of history, knowledge & wisdom.
He handles these generic questions with grace.
Great questions & Marcus answers with sincerity that is why he is so successful. Abundance of talent, nice guy & no BS.
theres a lot of amazing bass players out there (past and present) and of course its subjective but.....MM is the best thats ever done it! hands down
