    IMO the most indestructible and tuneable Diesel engines come from Mercedes - OM602, OM606, OM617... Well done saving the best for last 👏🏼

      id say cummins engines. There are people building 2000hp diesel trucks which can outrun supercars in america

      @@gabrielmessam2374 sure, maybe if it’s built. The Mercedes is half the size and can safely and reliably make 550+ hp of a stock engine with the exception of injection pump and turbo. A built Mercedes can make even more and is a lot smaller and lighter so it’s easier to swap in thing. I like Cummins but the Mercedes wins.

    Fun fact, the OM606 stock block can take 5,4 Bar before it cracks, Dieselmekken in sweden have tested this lmao

      Yeah but not long... i know that they are capable of 3,5bar and 670hp all engines with more boost dont last more than 5k km

    i think that BMW M57 is much better than M51 ,i heard from people that they tuned it over 400 hp on stock internals

      I have M57 e46 bmw with the 204hp stock model. Simple chipping made it to 720nw and 295hp. For more you only need to change intercooler and injectors.

      M57 should have definitely been on the list instead of the M51; my 2009 335d is well over 400hp & 600 lbs/ft

      Actually the M51 is much more reliable than the M57. No swirl flap issues, simple mechanical injection system and no DPF or EGR problems to worry about. With turbo, intercooler and exhaust upgrades they can better 300bhp.....plus the can run on vegetable oil! :-D

    The 7.3L was one of the most obnoxiously loud diesels ever made. Even locomotives run quieter than it does. Not to mention you can smell them coming from a mile away.

    Bmw M57 engine should be on that list not M51 :D :D, Mercedes 60x series are all good for tuning.

      @ZeusMind the om601 sounds like an old tractor on idle as supposed to M57 which sounds so smooth on warm idle. On cold start it’s sounds like a beast with a “wobbly” sound like a v8

    Fiat/GM 1.9 JTD/CDTI 150hp? They are a great engine, capable of over 200hp with just a remap, over 350hp+ on stock internals

      Too bad this engine is held back by weak M32 transmission. Also, swirl flaps in some models can detach from the intake manifold and get sucked into the engine. The engine itself if top notch, but it's reputation is not very good because of the equipment around it.

      Jan Muñiz Swirl flaps are little flaps in the intake manifold designed to help change the direction of the airflow through the manifold and allow better airflow, however they can break off and be sucked into the engine, causing huge amounts of damage. Swirl flaps are also used in some petrols as well (Audi S3 2.0 EA888)

      Jordan Field the cdti 150 is powerful enough stock, start playing with it and your going to eat gearboxes, the engines a designed to work with the swirl flap so removing it is not a good idea without a full map.

    Old mechanical Diesel engines are awesome, more power can be made by simply turning a screw, I’ve picked up 12 horsepower on my naturally aspirated diesel by turning up the fueling, plus it gets better fuel mileage than it used to, it seems like a contradiction of normal laws of engine tuning, but it’s actually just because getting up to speed is so much easier that it isn’t held at full throttle all the time, and 12 horsepower is a lot when it only makes 52 at the crankshaft from the factory.

      Om601 max. 220hp because it doesnt have piston cooling...
      Om602 about 400hp om603 500 om604 300hp om605 500hp and om606 650hp all on stock internals

    I just came back from at trip from Denmark to Gibralta and return - my 1995 w124 Om606 drove like a dream - but I did'nt see cars like this all 7.500 km. But just a pleasure to drive this old Mercedes stationcar.

      yep. stock 2.5l 2kdftv without intercooler makes just only 101hp but with proper tuning and mods it can produce up to 400hp.

      I always heard they had an appetite for injectors, but I guess aftermarket injectors would be available given how much the Thais like fast diesel utes

      "Proper" fuel maintenance can make last
      For upgrade there is "gtx" or "dtx"
      And remap only can make 101==>up to 160
      And intercooler up to 200

    Suprised the 7.3 idi made this list. It's often overlooked for the newer powerstroke engines. It only recently has had serious performance parts avaliable, but an idi will produce more torque than a powerstroke at the same hp level because of the bore/stroke ratio and higher compression. I'm building one for my brothers f250. Planning on 350hp and 700+ lb/ft tq or so. Nothing crazy, just enough to make it keep up with stock modern rigs and towing a breeze.

    OM 605 FOR LIFE, very good engine!! the 5 cylinder is great to hear revving, has alot of torque, and it's AWESOME!!! I have a C250 W202 Station Wagon with it, it's great to accelerate... you know.... to take the webs out of the intake hehehe

    I’m a proud owner of a 1997 Mercedes OM605 c250 turbodiesel, the straight 5 howl a lovely note😍
    400hp/660ftlb on stock internals with bigger turbo and pump elements! Can also run on just about anything, including used engine oil 😇😇😂

    I would highly recommend 535d e60 facelift. Gearbox on the facelift can easily hold huge Nn loads and keeps being reliable. The car is a sleeping with sequential turbos good potencial for reasonable prices.

    I have a Toyota Prado 2007 with the D4D KD engine 3.0 4 cylinder. I have to get it Dyno’d again as I lost the print out. Monster Max ECU, plus 15% Baileys DLC “Diamond Like Coating” injectors, PSYCO removed the stock intercooler from the top of the engine (stupid design idea really) and installed a supplied front mount intercooler with provision for temperature sensor near the intake (from turbo) and near the outlet. Custom Aluminium pipework.
    Larger turbo installed.
    EGT sensor installed on 2.75 inch mandrel bent S/S exhaust system (from turbo waste to tip), air intake was to be upgraded but due to space left as standard with standard air filter (I have played around with those oil impregnated ones and they are an absolute mungrul to clean.). Snorkel installed. Turbo also has pressure sensor.
    Automatic transmission has had valve bodies replaced to “Nomad” from Automatic Wholsale Transmissions in Victoria, oil cooler installed as well as temperature sensor.
    Tranny gauge installed low in front of passenger seat.
    The other 3 digital blue gauges are installed in a “Pillar pod”, which is very neat.
    Intercooler typically drops temp 30 to 40 degrees.
    One gauge has both the intercooler in and out temps displayed.
    A BIG THANK YOU to Shane and the boys at 1KD Performance in Bundaberg Queensland Australia.
    They sure know their stuff.
    I intend to get more fuel with their fuel bracket thingy and will replace the injectors with Denso plus 30 injectors.
    I also had some other work done, but it’s not worth talking about.
    I also intend to find a solution to the tranny oil cooler partially blocking the air flow of the intercooler.
    Also a tap at the bottom of the intercooler to drain any extra oil.
    Like to also replace my catchcan with a Provent 2000, with clear pvc hose and cock firmly mounted beneath vehicle but not protruding below chassis. A guard to protect it from being hit and turning cock on to crow....sorry, had to put that it!!😜

    It's real 3.0 toyota 1KD produce 500hpish on stock bottom end. Kinda sick w/ that medium(only) displacement.
    An ECU remap easily raise up to 200 hp without tweaking any mechanical parts, and running well w/ bad diesel fuel.

    Just had to scrap my AFN powered Passat today as it failed the MOT, the engine was spot on but the bodywork a subframe were rusted to fuck, great engine that really nice power delivery, and that's without having had anything done to it.

    Nissan TD27 only with turning up the fuel pump 200hp (double) and very capable. Used in Africa busses and the marvelous Terrano 2

    If you live in southeast asia, KD series from toyota is everything... In my country there are 4 cars use that engine.. and in thailand KD series with touch from tuners can make more than 500hp

    Honda N22A engine is a bloody good diesel engine, only downside is the stock clutch.
    Their new N16A engine is also good.

    Friend of mine has an OM606 in his Haglunds 206. With a bigger turbo, intercooler and fuel managment he easily got around 300hp stock.

    just fyi @VisioRacer the 7.3 IDI and the 7.3 Powerstroke are the least modded diesel engines in the ford lineup, of which are completely different engines. the 7.3 IDI was replaced by the 7.3 Powerstroke in 1994.5, you showed 1 7.3 IDI and 1 Powerstroke. The best tunable Ford powerstroke is either the 6.0, 6.4, and 6.7 powerstrokes

    You really need to learn more about the 7.3 idi. They are not a wanted engine for a reason. Very bad on the cylinders cracking, and the boosted versions were not much better. There's really not much to tuning one, and not much aftermarket support.
    I would suggest if you are going to use a 7.3, i would suggest the DI ( direct injection). The powerstroke has quite a few mid year truck's with the 7.3 and the 6.0, and the 6.0 has even greater tuning ability. 6.4 and 6.7 powerstroke are also well known power house engine's as well. Most of the time, solid custom tunes and a few mods will put down some respectful power.

    i would say a Om606 Turbo is like the 2jz of the diesel world and can be really heavily tuned If you do it right. (i recommend looking at dieselpumpuk) they talk and do and sell a lot of stuff about and for it. for a fun tuner daily that dont drink much i would go with a bmw 320d (N47) its really good. if you want a newer tuner diesel Engine go with a Bmw 335d they can also be very heavily tuned :)

    A lot of people compare the 6BT with the OM606 in reality they are literally worlds apart. The 6BT is easily available in the USA but not in Europe and the OM606 is readily available in Europe but not the USA.
    The OM606 has an advantage of being 300kg or 660 lbs lighter than the 6BT which isn't to be sniffed at. The vehicle your putting a 6BT into will generally be bigger too. You could put a OM606 in a BMW E36 no problem.
    Then it boils down to power to weight ratios and how much torque you can actually put through the tyres before then spin up.

    I have a 1996 diesel mercedes non turbo. I've toyed with the idea of adding a turbo to it. According to what you've said it should be able to handle the additional power. I was told by a mercedes expert it couldn't. I wonder?

    Had a 7.3 idi non turbo in a ford F-250. Only real weak points are the glow plugs and crap 4 speed automatic.

    I'm building a twin charged 7.3 idi. (Twin 88mm turbos feeding a 6-71 blower) you can get a sleeved block for pretty cheap and the heads respond well to porting. The only problems are getting enough fuel and insane egts. We'll see just what it can take.....
