Two things. 1. Your're one of very few reactors that took the time to try to understand Paulie rather then defaulting to "I really don't like this guy" and I really appreciate that. 2. Rocky 1 and 2 are really a package deal. Can't have one without the other. ;)
@@MovieJoobgreat observation. Paulie is angry and depressed about his life. He's miserable and he blames Adrian for this. He even says to Adrian "I don't get married because of you!". The thing is that these characters are not old. Both Rocky and Adrian are under 30. Paulie is probably only in his early 30's. Today being 29-31 years old and single is normal. Back then it was not especially in a family oriented Italian culture. Another thing about this film is even though it's 47 years old it doesn't look dated. The grittiness of blue collar life in a big city doesn't change. You can go to any major city today and visit the poor areas and they look exactly like Philadelphia did in this movie.
I like her reaction to Paulie. I'm happy that she was able to find the subtle nuances in his storyline. That just makes her reaction to Mickey all the more shocking. Mickey was open with his exact motivations, his exact reasoning for being angry at Rocky, and he even offered Rocky training for free. I was shocked that she would assume that Mickey doesn't have Rocky's best interest at heart. Considering how she was able to see the nuances in Paulie's character.
@@MovieJoobfinally you’re doing the Rocky series! Talk about an American classic. The ultimate underdog story. Oddly enough, this movie built Sylvester Stallone’s career. He was inspired by the idea after going to see Muhammad Ali go 15 rounds with Chuck Wepner, an unknown underdog that no one gave a chance. He wrote the script when he had no money and agreed to sell it on the condition that he got to play Rocky and star in it. The studios tried to get around that but he wouldn’t budge. Talk about betting on yourself and believing in yourself.
I cant tell you what this show mean to me growing up. When I was a kid I didn't have many friends and lived in a very strict home. One of my few getaways was the Rocky franchise. It helped me through a lot of dark times as a kid and even a few as an adult. I can't praise these films enough. I truly hope you enjoy them as I did.
Burt Young deserves many accolades for his overlooked performance of Paulie. Burt helps make for an even better film. Yes, Paulie's not likeable. But Burt's work as Paulie makes us so readily root against him with enthusiasm, and more importantly, allows his fellow actors to play off Paulie to really shine themselves. Like his scene with Talia Shire, when Talia's Adrian finally stands up for herself in an explosion of righteousness, a wonderful performance. In that scene, there's a powerful line from Paulie that a lot may miss in the yelling; "you're supposed to be good to me". Paulie is wrong. But it's Burt's pained TONE when he says it that shows so much sadness, desperation, & a vulnerability in Paulie. Wow. Great artistry by Burt Young!
And by the way, speaking of great supporting performances, I can't ever speak highly enough of the underrated work in Rocky I and Rocky II of Tony Burton as Apollo Creed's Manager. Yet another artist who chews up some epic scenes with skills of nuance and delivery of short but potent dialogue.
Burt Young was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for "Rocky", so at the time, he did get some credit. Ironically. Burt was a champion boxer, when he was in the Marine Corps. When his enlistment was up, he went pro, & small World, his trainer was Cus D'Amato, who later trained Mike Tyson. He had a successful career as a professional boxer, before he got into acting.
@shawnpatrick1877 I agree. Back in the 1970's, when "Rocky" was released, everyone knew people like Paulie. There were many such broken men around in those days. Broken by war, strikes, cultural change & probably many factors. Life wasn't all rainbows & ponies for audiences back then, so they could totally relate to Paulie, whether they liked him or not.
That was a nice edit. You left in a lot of important scenes missing from other reactors' edits. Also, your attitude throughout was REALLY SWEET; you got the sentiments in each scene without a negative parsing of the scene. You're a great reactor. I CAN'T WAIT for you to do the rest of the series. This is not a one-movie, then fall-off series. It's a great series. Please watch all the movies. Thanks! Again, you're fun to watch. :)
She did not see Mickey can be good for rocky that they will have a good relationship as boxer and manager Mickey was just wanting help rocky when he went to rocky's place
The story behind how this film came about is as amazing as the film. Stallone was nearly completely broke when he wrote the script. He was struggling to get parts, and wrote it with himself in mind for the lead. He had to give up his dog (Butkis in the film is his dog), because he couldn't afford to feed him. He shopped around the script and was even offered 300,000 to just sell the script, but he wouldn't get to be in it. He said no. Finally he finds someone who wanted the script and was willing to let him play the lead. The final budget was 2 million. It wins best screenplay at the Oscars and set Stallone as an icon in the movies. Oh and he bought his dog back. Stallone tells the story of it on his instagram. Oh the actor who plays Micky is in the Film "Grumpy Old Men" and "Grumpier Old Men", two fun comedies. While some of the films are better than others, the full Rocky series is worth it, as will as the new Creed films which are tied to Rocky. Every film has a good human story to them.
Rocky Balboa is the greatest movie character of all time. It is my great pleasure to see people really fall in love with the characters and enjoy the franchise the same way I did when I was younger.
As Stallone himself said : " Rocky is not a movie about boxing " you do not need anything but a very beautiful story to make an iconic movie , thank you very much for sharing this with us !
I love how all he wanted to do is go the distance and prove he was worth something, not just a loser, but in the end after he did, all he needed was her, he needed the one he loved , makes me cry Everytime 😢
When Rocky says to Adrienne "No fooling around during training," and she retreats to the kitchen. I always loved how Rocky WEARS A BLANKET when he walks over to her. Say what you will about some of Stallone’s other movies, he worked a wonder making this movie. There are very few actors who have earned both acting and writing Oscar nominations, and I think you can count on one hand the ones who’ve gotten both for the same movie; Stallone did that with “Rocky.”
Ooh the Rocky franchise. Wow. You have an entire list of movies to entertain to. Some of the biggest, most influential movies ever made. There been a lot of first time reactors of older people seeing these movies, and even less knowledgeable sports fans manages to get won over with these films. Because the heart of the movies are the characters, and the story. I hope you enjoy them as much I’ll enjoy seeing you react.
Yes, ABSOLUTELY watch the first 5 Rocky's! One of the all time greatest movie series ever made. Part one will always be iconic, but the action, drama, and challenges get serious on part 3 and 4. You'll also find yourself getting attached to the characters... even Paulie! 🤣
some people feel this way, presumably because of the keep moving forward speech, but some of us feel that the absence of adrienne is a let down of deal-breaker levels. i dont care for 6 nearly as much as the first 5.@@DanJackson1977
@@DanJackson1977 Every Rocky movie after part 5 were way past the era. They were all like 20 to 30 years later and doesn't have the same vibe. They were desperate Hollywood cash grab remakes not even made by Stallone.
A statue of Rocky,, arms raised, was on those exact stairs for many years in Philadelphia, his theme is still played during many Eagles games (particularly when the team needs to rally). A local icon
@@cshubsthey moved it briefly but it’s back in front of the art museum. Not so fun fact, 49ers fans vandalized it before their game Vs the Eagles last season prompting Travis Kelce to ask Chiefs fans publicly to leave the statue alone before the Super Bowl.
Many state it in different ways, but Boxing is Not #1 in the Rocky movies. Rocky is a love story & a life story (life is tough & to keep getting up when knocked down). Lessons to believe in yourself. Rocky 1 saw Adrian going from shy & low self-esteem to developing into a confident young woman. Her arc throughout the movies is great. Rocky & Adrians love is great throughout the franchise. Rocky was HUGE when I was a kid. SO much fun to see young people watch Rocky & not pass it by just cuz it's getting dated. Keep going! :)
Rocky is not only the greatest, most powerful and inspirational sports movie ever made, it's also one of the greatest love stories ever put on film. Rocky may not have won the fight against Apollo. But he became the ultimate winner when Adrian cried out, "I LOVE YOU!"
I think Butkus was named after Chicago Bears player Dick Butkus. He used to be, if I remember correctly, one of the Monsters of the Midway. Almost lethal to be on the other side of the line from that guy.
Hi! Great reaction you just did, and obviously we want you to kee reacting to the next Rocky movies because they are quite a ride. Greetings from Chile
The nuanced humanity in this is what sets it apart from all the other sports movies this film inspired, including most of its sequels. An all time classic for sure. The guy that inspired the story for this film, Chuck Wepner, grew up around the same area as me. And I actually got a chance to meet him once when I was waiting tables back in college. Had him as a customer. He seemed like a nice guy. Anyways, really enjoyed your reaction and glad you liked the film :) Oh, by the way, while I'm sure everyone in the comments is recommending the sequels, I'd also like to recommend checking out the Karate Kid on here if you haven't already. The director for this film, John G Avildsen, also directed that film. And it achieves a similar strong blend of character based story telling within the framework of a sports film.
What a beautiful movie this is. One could see it as a sports movie. Or a love story. Or a tale of four broken people finding redemption in living. Beautiful and inspiring however one sees it.
TRUE STORY: Stallone was so broke that he had to sell his Dog. When he got his first check, he bought his beloved Dog back (for a HUGE Mark-up). The dog was Butkus! Apollo might have won the fight, but Rocky won in every way that was important him... He went the distance and found a good woman to love.
Philadelphia has very much adopted both the character of Rocky Balboa and the movie itself. It’s shown pretty much every year around the Fourth of July, outdoors on the grounds near the Philadelphia Museum of Art - the building that those famous steps lead to. And the city is very much a part of this film, like the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, which is the boulevard in the shot you liked at 26:15, which runs from the Art Museum in a straight line to City Hall, which at the time this movie was made was the tallest building in the city. Of course, the sequence of places in the city during Rocky’s runs makes no sense - he’d be running close to a marathon - but it’s all real Philadelphia.
Great reaction Jade, can tell you really really into the story. I grew up in the 80s, about 45 minutes from Philadelphia. For school trip in grade school we went to the art museum where Rocky runs up the stairs. As kids, it was a fun experience to run up the same stairs and get to pretend to be Rocky. Highly recommended Stallone's other great movie, First Blood. The later Rambo movies are typical 80s action style, but the first one isn't what you'd expect. One of my favorite movies of all time.
Ya Rocky and First Blood are what I consider Stallone's most heartfelt performances. I'm rather sad that he didn't continue on that track and instead just went for the big, splashy action movies. Shame that his best dramatic performances were at the beginning of his career.
Wonderful reaction. I still think that Rocky caring more about seeing Adrian than hearing the outcome of the fight is my favorite movie ending. Add the incredible score, and it’s perfect.
I found your channel after watching your Creed reaction. Now I’m starting from the beginning. I love how you seem to grasp the humanity of the Rocky character(sans those middle sequels where it gets a little weird). It’s really endearing to watch someone younger on the other side ocean, experiencing Rocky for the first time. 😊
I have to assume that Butkus Stallone was named after Chicago Bears Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus and was mostly known for his ferocious tackling during the 1960s and 70s.
YAAAAAAAY!!!!!! So excited to see you react to these movies...I loved these growing up and no matter what anyone else says you should watch them all even though some aren't as good as others they're still worth it
I have always loved this movie for many reasons, here are just a few. It's not a boxing movie, it's a love story with boxing mixed in. My favorite line in this movie is when Adrienne comes into the ring at the end and Rocky sees her and he says "where's your hat?" all he cares about in that moment is her. And, to me one of the most powerful moments in all of cinema is when Rocky goes down in the 14th round and is struggling to get back up while Creed is celebrating and then he does get back up, and Creed turns around to see him waving him in with is hands, the look on Creed's face is a combination disbelief and defeat, he knows he can't beat him. That was shot really well by the director and hats off to Carl Weathers for being able to convey that so subtly.
I decided to re-watch this movie franchise in memoriam of Carl Weathers. I chose this channel because I really enjoy the reactions. I needed to see the "Rocky" franchise again when I learned we lost Apollo Creed February 1, 2024. RIP Carl W. 🙏 You will be missed.
I think you would really enjoy watching "Cinderella man" with Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger. Based on a true story. Maybe you can put it on a poll sometime
Definitely subscribing. Fun fact, Butkis was his dog irl, and he had to sell him because he was broke. Then when he sold the rights to the film, he bought him back.
When *Rocky* tells *Adrian* no fooling around during training (is referring to an old wise tale or myth if men have sex during training weakens them) same when *Mickey* says women weaken legs
its called "old wives tale" not wise tail. and the truth in it pertains to the last day before an event. they really should abstain the night before, and day of the fight.
there is nothing to need to "believe" about science that was proven 40-50 years ago. surely sex requires energy. athletes that engage in sex within 24 hours of a competition have measurably less energy. so, youre not in sports medicine, youre not a top athlete, do you even get laid much ? to not notice the correlation is striking lol. the myth part pertains to " during training" weeks before an event is very different than , the day OF an event.@@CaddyJim
I remember when they were advertising in the local newspaper for “extras” for a movie being made in Philadelphia. I was too young, but knew people who went.
I need to watch this movie. I went to Philly back in October during my first ever visit to America, I know how massive it is there and I went to the famous steps. It was amazing
Rocky is great. When he's angry, he gets back forgiving real quick. He just had to let it all out. Loved your reaction. I mean, I love them all cause you are great fun but this series is one of my fav.
Such a great movie. Being born and raised in Philly, I grew up watching this on friends' cable in the late 70s/early 80s. It's weird, back then I just remember it as a fun boxing movie, but as I got older I started seeing it for what it is, a moving romance/drama.
I watched this film a couple of years ago, and I only remember the main plot and a couple of moments. It was interesting for me to watch and remember this film with you. Thank you)
Apparently, Sly Stallone took quite a while to find a studio that would make his movie. He wrote the script for Rocky. Butkus was his real dog and they would go together to try to get this movie made. The first 2 movies are excellent. After that, it gets very cheesy and 80s with MTV soundtracks. The first 2 have great storytelling and they're really just a continuous story, so I'd recommend watching both close together because they kind of complete the narrative. The 2nd is arguably as good as the first.
I subscribed to your channel just now because of Rocky. You did great. I loved your reaction. You have now started the first of the greatest saga in cinematic history. I look forward to being a part of your Rocky journey.
Dude, it’s me again. I watched your reaction to Rocky Balboa first, and I just had to get this reaction. You understand this film. You act like Adrian before Adrian gets the chance to react. You’re really an awesome critic. You do things with your heart first. You should come to Philadelphia, and you’ll see a vast majority of the people here are heart first people. Also, keep your glasses on. I think you look beautiful with them (not to say you’re less attractive with them off). I always loved glasses. Your hair is amazing too.
Rocky's dog Butkus was Stallone's real-life dog he got as a puppy in 1969. Butkus was named after Chicago Bears linebacker Dick Butkus. Poor and starving, Stallone sold Butkus for $40 while writing "Rocky", then 6 months later after selling the screenplay for "Rocky", he had to beg the new owners to let him use Butkus in the movie, and they agreed, and Stallone paid them $15,000 to get Butkus back.
No matter his rough demeanor, Paulie was ride or die with Rocky throughout. People are so quick to be against him, but overlook his roughness and he is a true friend.
G’day Joobs. Once again, I love how you get totally immersed in the movies 🍿 I saw on the big screen back in the day. Have you seen Gallipoli? A great Aussie film with a very young Mel Gibson.
The poster on Balboa's wall, was the only undefeated HEAVY WEIGHT PROFESSIONAL BOXER. 38-0: MR. ROCKY MARCIONO. The dog named Butkis, was named after Dick Butkis, THE MONSTER OF THE MIDWAY; FROM THE Chicago Bears NFL team.
Oh 1000% and I said that however I meant if you did have few friends/family it would feel lonely when you can't distract yourself as much with the internet during that time when you're not around people!
Wonderful reaction. When that movie came out I was a big fan as I was training to be a pro boxer. I have a picture on my living room wall of Sylvester Stallone with my manager.
I’m sure someone else mentioned it but “Butkus” is actually Stallones dog. He couldn’t afford to keep him cause he was so poor before Rocky. He sold Butkus for $25. Once he sold the movie to a studio he went back and bought Butkus back for $15,000. Which was a ton of money back then. Butkus is named after a fierce football player, Dick Butkus.

Sadly the actor Burt Young, who played Paulie in died last month (October 8th 2023) at 83 Young
Yes, ABSOLUTELY watch the first 5 Rocky's! One of the all time greatest movie series ever made. Part one will always be iconic, but the action, drama, and challenges get serious on part 3 and 4. You'll also find yourself getting attached to the characters... even Paulie! 🤣
Why skip 6? That's the best one after the first.
some people feel this way, presumably because of the keep moving forward speech, but some of us feel that the absence of adrienne is a let down of deal-breaker levels. i dont care for 6 nearly as much as the first 5.@@DanJackson1977
Rocky 3 with Clubber Lang (Mr T.). His lines could have been written by Shakespeare himself.
@@DanJackson1977 Every Rocky movie after part 5 were way past the era. They were all like 20 to 30 years later and doesn't have the same vibe. They were desperate Hollywood cash grab remakes not even made by Stallone.
@@Fierysaint1 Nonsense. Watch all 9.
A statue of Rocky,, arms raised, was on those exact stairs for many years in Philadelphia, his theme is still played during many Eagles games (particularly when the team needs to rally). A local icon
The statue is gone???
@@cshubsthey moved it briefly but it’s back in front of the art museum. Not so fun fact, 49ers fans vandalized it before their game Vs the Eagles last season prompting Travis Kelce to ask Chiefs fans publicly to leave the statue alone before the Super Bowl.
@@Halfaxa7 Uncool, man. What's Rocky got to do with football?? 🙂
@@cshubs Rocky had nothing to do with football, he had everything to do with the city. The character is an icon of the city of Philadelphia.
Keep going! :)
hey, great reaction!....by the way, "Rocky II" is my personal favourite.
(I won't tell you exactly why, just the word "win" 🙂)
So excited to keep going!! Thank you for joining me 😊❤
Rocky is not only the greatest, most powerful and inspirational sports movie ever made, it's also one of the greatest love stories ever put on film.
For decades, Dick Butkus was the best-known Bear, and the definition of a tough, no-nonsense man. He died just last month.
Hi! Great reaction you just did, and obviously we want you to kee reacting to the next Rocky movies because they are quite a ride. Greetings from Chile
23:43 - You are correct about redemption and forgiveness, what Mickey was referring to is that we pass through this life only once.
Ohh right for living on earth I didn’t think of it like that hahaha!
Anyways, really enjoyed your reaction and glad you liked the film :)
Oh, by the way, while I'm sure everyone in the comments is recommending the sequels, I'd also like to recommend checking out the Karate Kid on here if you haven't already.
Rocky isnt a boxing movie. It's a love story. ✌️
One thing I learned from watching these movies is that Rocky is not a movie about boxing. It’s a love story.
Are you ready for this ride? Rocky I-V, Balboa, Creed, and possibly 2 and 3, I haven't seen them yet. My favorite movie of this saga is Rocky IV.
Another amazing reaction after the great Back to the Future reaction
Thank you so much!! 😊
Of course, the sequence of places in the city during Rocky’s runs makes no sense - he’d be running close to a marathon - but it’s all real Philadelphia.
that movie was nominated for 10 Academy awards it won for best picture 1976. wait till you see all of the rocky movies you will love them
Great reaction Jade, can tell you really really into the story.
I have been loving the movies you've been watching lately jade back to the future and now Rocky two incredible franchises🚗🥊😊😊
I’m so glad to hear!! Thank you for joining me on these journeys! ❤❤
You can't skip any of the Rocky series before watching Creed
Top 3 fav movie series ever for me. Glad you chose it! Thanks Jade!
I can see why!! So awesome! Thank you for joining me!
Wonderful reaction. I still think that Rocky caring more about seeing Adrian than hearing the outcome of the fight is my favorite movie ending. Add the incredible score, and it’s perfect.
Yes I totally agree, he wanted nothing more than to see her and hug her ugh my heaarrrtt❤
Awww this means the absolute world to me!! Thank you so very much 😊
What a great reaction. This is such an insperational movie. I hope you watch the rest. ❤
I have to assume that Butkus Stallone was named after Chicago Bears Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus and was mostly known for his ferocious tackling during the 1960s and 70s.
YAAAAAAAY!!!!!! So excited to see you react to these movies...I loved these growing up and no matter what anyone else says you should watch them all even though some aren't as good as others they're still worth it
omg the absolutely adorable jade starting the rocky series (and hopefully creed series after).. I'm so here for this!!
I’m really excited and enjoyed this a lot so far!!
I hope you watch the rest of the series. These movies utilize boxing as an allegory for struggling through life.
I love that Apollo is declared the winner literally in the final seconds of the film but our focus is 100% on Rocky and Adrian.
Rocky 2 aqui do Brasil
Good one, MJ. The last Rocky is actually my favorite, but they're all pretty good. Thanks for sharing this one, Glad you enjoyed it. 🙂
Just a little FYI, the Turtles (Cuff and Link) are still with Stallone.
That makes me so freaking happy!!
@@ice-iu3vv You can believe Tyson & I myself don't think it has a negative effect
there is nothing to need to "believe" about science that was proven 40-50 years ago. surely sex requires energy. athletes that engage in sex within 24 hours of a competition have measurably less energy. so, youre not in sports medicine, youre not a top athlete, do you even get laid much ? to not notice the correlation is striking lol. the myth part pertains to " during training" weeks before an event is very different than , the day OF an event.@@CaddyJim
Everyone goes in thinking it’s a boxing film but the love story overshadowed that. Good reaction and review
What this first rocky movie teaches is to overcome your own self doubts and getting past the fear of failure. Fear is a illusion.
Such a great movie. Being born and raised in Philly, I grew up watching this on friends' cable in the late 70s/early 80s. It's weird, back then I just remember it as a fun boxing movie, but as I got older I started seeing it for what it is, a moving romance/drama.
That is so awesome that you literally grew with this film and grew new perspectives on it as you got older I love that!
Thanks for subbing! I will be watching Rocky II next for sure I’m so excited!!
@@MovieJoob I can't wait 😊
BTW, Dick Butkus just died last month, October 5, 2023.
😥
No matter his rough demeanor, Paulie was ride or die with Rocky throughout. People are so quick to be against him, but overlook his roughness and he is a true friend.
Yes! Please continue with this series.
Rocky II up next!!
G’day Joobs. Once again, I love how you get totally immersed in the movies 🍿 I saw on the big screen back in the day. Have you seen Gallipoli? A great Aussie film with a very young Mel Gibson.
The dog was named after Dick Butkiss an American Football player from the '70s.
WOW what a name hahaha
My wrestling coach used to say, "Be a gritter, not a quitter."
Just a awesome movie. Even the making of this movie was the ultimate underdog story
Ok, it´s official, I love you 🥰 You will be SO IN LOVE with this franchise
That is so sweet thank you! I can’t wait to watch more!!
Absolutely watch the 2nd one, phenomenal movie, some say better than the 1st.... Thanks for watching!!
I definitely will be watching Rocky II next 😊
Actually it was easier to talk to people and make friends because of no internet.👍
Cuff and Link are still with him at home today. He kept the turtles!
This is a great movie and series!!! So glad you are reacting to it. I've been looking forward to your reactions to these movies.
Thank you so much! So glad you’ve been looking forward to this!! More to come for sure!
Rocky 1-4 are defiantly worth watching.
love the early rocky films.. especially the ones with adrian. "bubkiss" was stallones dog and he still has the "turtles cuff and link even today.
Butkus was Stallone's real dog he sold & then had to spend thousands of dollars to buy him back after he sold the Rocky script
Rocky 2
