Wow that's crazy. All that hiden rust. It's really coming together nicely after all of that Sam. Can't wait to see more videos soon. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Fab On. Weld On. Keep Making. God bless.
Awesome video mate, this is exactly what I’m looking at with a HJ ute I bought last year. I had no idea you could do repairs to that extent. Thanks Sam. 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Great vid Sam…. So I brought this rust bucket “cough “HQ ute… and I WISH the plenum was as “bad” as yours!!!! Mine is TOTALLY munted!!!! It aint coming back. So this vid was inspirational, I’ve done it before and swore I’d NEVER do it again. But hey I love me Q and I’m stoked about saving it!! I’d also like to give a shout out to the guys that supply the rust sections like cowls and plenums. Bloody legends helping us keep our classics on the road……. Cheers mate. 👍👌
@@ShenkeGarage Thinking of a HQ well body I have a hq 253 auto to rebuild to put into one. I failed once giving up with the rust on the plenum on a previous build and your video has definitely inspired me. Check out my HQ coupe when you get a chance instagram.com/badqmonaro
Hey Mate. Its not too bad once you get into it. It just depends on how bad the plenum is gone and if you need to do repairs on the A pillars underneath. Took about 6 hrs to remove the cowl. 3 Hrs to remove the plenum then a good day to repair the A pillars either side. welding it all back together is then the easy part.
Mate great Vid, one of the best showing the process on removing the Plenum. What thickness metal did you use for the patches, what size wire in your mig? Also anything you might have done different? Only asking as I will have have to do this in the next couple of years.Cheers!!
Thanks heaps Mate. I used 1.2mm steel for the patches. Mig wire I used .8mm with argoshield light gas. I am pretty happy with how it turned out and dont think I would do anything different except buy a new spot weld drill bit as using a blunt one takes so much more time.
I’m currently doing a wb one tonne and hq one tonne at the same time , also have a hj Ute and hj sedan that is next in line love your work mate really good videos
Hey mate sorry to keep boosting your videos with comments but hq to hz tonner a where the only model of those cars that actually kept the hq plenum and front the only thing that changed for tonners where dash and chassis, wbs where the only one that changed. But all other models like utes and sedans and what not changed in order, so you could use that to be period correct but if you have the hz front I’d probably send it back. Good job tho had to do similar to my hq ute and it’s a massive job
All good. Comments are always welcomed. Thanks for the info. I noticed the HQ version where it mounts to the inside dash is different so I dont think I can use it
Hey Sam mate how is the plenum mate if you can inbox me on Facebook photos as I maybe interested in getting the old one from you for my little hand shape repair panels business cheers mate Wayne

Always admire a man brave enough to go this deep.
Ha I dont think I could live with myself knowing there was rust in there and not doing any thing about it.

Heyyy mate. Sucks about your cowl and plenum. Best of luck repairing it. Yep it was a life saver being able to buy new ones.
Sam I think it's time you hang up the spanners mate and become a panel beater, that repair was better then half the pros! Keep up the good work mate!
Haha im not sure if I could do it full time. Thanks for the encouragement but.
Amazed at how quickly you are knocking this out yet it took us about 4 hours to drill a hole in the wall.
Ha was that in the bricks for the bike rack?
@@ShenkeGarage That's the one!
Nice work. Just starting an HQ Ute so your videos are most helpful.
Thanks Mate. Good luck with your HQ build
Bloody great job mate. Doing great with those patch pieces!!

Great job on the plenum repairs Sam, looks mint!
Can i ask what size welder you are using and what thickness plate, it looks like 3 mm??
Hey Mate I am using a 185 welder. The thickness steel that I use is 1.2mm cold rolled
What’s the sight you go on to get all your parts mate because I’m doing a wb Ute
Hey Mate. I usually just use rare spares or resto country.
