I called this 2 videos ago as soon as I seen how it was parked. Told you you'd need the f250.
Ain't the first time we've had to pull out a shitty truck driver with it lol
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot lol atleast they're pretty easy to pull. Most people think its amazing when a pickup pulls out a semi. Normally they just need a little nudge.
Always look under your trailer to make sure the jaws of the 5th wheel are locked around the king pin. Tug test is not enough. Always visually check connections...
I never pull a trailer without crawling under there to check. Invest a good flashlight. Also, do your tug test and then pump the brakes down.
Also: never pulled a spread axle but have pulled triple axles trailers. Backing is a whole level above difficult. Takes a little practice to learn.Deck boards are going to warp something fierce with so few screws in them. Sucky job but you need 3 screws at every board to angle iron interface.Redecking that trailer at a proper repair shop is about a $5000.00 to $6000.00 job now. But they also don't use yellow pine. An option is also engineered aluminum decking. Once and done but does cost more.
Yeah this trailer is tricky to back for sure!
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot Spread axels turn WIDE, especially when backing. IF you can put a dump valve on the rear axel of the trailer. Spread axels allow you to carry more weight.
You're doing great, dude. I've been driving a semi for over 20 years now and I can tell you the frustrations are an everyday thing. Pretty much anything that can slow you down or aggravate you will lol Just gotta roll with it and keep pushing on. I definitely feel your pain with that deck especially. I've had the pleasure of re-decking 3 trailers in the past few years. You did a good job, man. Keep it up and look forward to seeing more videos of your guy's journey.
Thanks Richard
Rich...why did he give up hotshot after 2 years?
The company I worked for trained us to visually check the 5th. wheel jaws to make sure there locked, especially in the winter ❄️ in a northern climate.
I would have lost a few over the years if I didn’t check, never dropped a trailer in 37 years.
I check all the times
I had 1 the jaws didn't go around and i.pulled that sucker 250 miles thank the Lord she didn't break loose.so now I check all the time
looks like a pretty neighborhood ...i bet your neighbors love that eyesore of a trailer in your front yard
Was thinking the same about the back up horn. Maybe disconnect at home.
Good thing we bought 11 acres lol
Its a Backup Beeper.
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot doesnt add up 11 acres but still park it out on the street?
like a boss always go out and look robert and you will be one hell of a semi driver ! So Proud of you going full semi CDL big step you won't regret it !
Thanks Alex!
Remember try to avoid tight backing maneuvers with spread axles, you don’t want to drag an axle. You run the risk of damaging an axle
and crack a wheel, break a tire bead, break tire side cords.....
Yes sir I got 2 flatbeds and I worry about that all the time.tires and wheels
I had no idea about a spread axle setup, didnt consider the binding that would occur on backing up. Good info, thanks yall!
@@stihlpro2401 I think he’ll figure it out ok. Oh and this is for causing me to compliment him:🖕
That's nothing...I once managed to get my bank account stuck in a hole.....I tried everything. I chained my ambition up to it and it was in low, I pulled with my dreams....nothing. Goals, Magic, Dumb Luck....I tried everything.
Faith finally did the trick. Great video as always!
That’s a very well written comment! My best to you !
When I first saw this trailer in yard I thought he's gonna get stuck pulling it out of the yard
Lol thats exactly what I thought. I said to myself, man that youtuber just screwed him dropping it there.
Myself too
All of us thought that...... And have been waiting to watch.....
Same here.
Even with locking axles these trucks will get stuck on wet grass. They just sit there and spin, believe me I’ve made that mistake as many of my friends have also.I had one friend pull over and get all the right side tires on the grass and it had been raining for days, the right side sank so far in the mud it just laid over right on the side of the interstate.
Who didn't see this coming. I understand why Jason from dream inspired put it there but I knew it would cause problems getting it out. Your the hardest working guy I've ever seen. Mostly because of yourself but nevertheless a hard worker and sometimes that's the best way to learn. Love your videos. Keep up the hard work.
Thanks 😊
Anytime you attaching the tractor too a trailer or a flatbed supposed to go in reverse lock it in place pull forward to make sure everything is secure before you attach your airlines
Called it in the last movie about the board bolts. In cases like this, I buy by the pound 3/8" carriage bolts 3" long along with large fender washers. When I drill the board I just miss the flange of the beam. Then the fender washer will catch the flange when you tight the nut with an impact gun. I also use lock washers.
Ohhh I see what you mean. And tighten them down enough to sink them into the wood.
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot yes. I've done alot of tagalong flatbeds like that and I did my 32' gooseneck same way.
Install a dump valve on the rear axle of the trailer. Preferably electric and install a switch in the dash to control it.
Good luck with your new truck\trailer ! You're very determined to be a success so you'll succeed and overcome the negatives to making a living for your family and kids !
Don't forget that with the spread axle robert you can put 40.000 pounds on them instead of 34.000 for a regular axle like the truck so don't be afraid to put more weight toward the back of this trailer :)
Ford Power love it.Great video Robert as always .Such a determined Sole .You and your family have a great day and Thankyou for the phone conversation 🇬🇧🇺🇸👍
All you had to do, was hit the interlock.. (Drive both rears instead of just the one)
I have still been stuck using both axles. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
@@motorbikemadness5773 Yea fact, been there too! But, its free to try and does work alot, also try going backwards a few feet if ya can and then forward, sometimes thats all ya need also...
@@cumulusvapes7 Yep, that works too.
There's a trick I learned in the Navy many decades ago for drilling through tough material with a hand drill. Hard to explain but I'll try. Loop a chain through the rub rail to make anchor point for a lever (8' 2 x 4).1 man on the drill another goes to opposite end of the 2 x 4. Set the drill and place the 2 x 4 on the top of the drill. Drillman starts the drill and guides it while the leverman presses down on the free end of the 2 x 4.You'll need to adjust the chain loop so that the 2 x 4 free end is only a couple of inches higher than the drill when starting the hole. I would drill through the wood and use the metal as the start point for the rig.Should work well to the center line of the trailer then you re-rig the chain to the other side of the trailer and finish the row of holes.I mentioned you will need more screws to prevent warpage of the boards. Try this method and you won't work yourself to death and destroy your hands partner. Also an ol' skool D handle 1/2" drill motor would work well if you can find/rent one.
And: (older and forgetful so thoughts pop up after i post a comment): drill through the wood then squirt oil into the hole then drill through the metal. Easier to drill, saves bits too. Common mistake is to go King Kong on the drill. Firm and steady pushing force is best. Let the drill do the work.
Don't go too crazy mounting tool boxes under the bed of the trailer. You are going to quickly find that you want to set up ramps for your step deck. Ramps will give you so many more options when it comes to loads. So you will want to have a place to put the ramps under the bed.
Your doing a good job. Good luck to you sir.
Yep already eye balling them ramps lol
Looks good. Next time drill next to cross angle thru the board, use carriage bolts and fender washer to grab the angle. Way easier to replace any boards when needed
Set up is coming along nice dude happy for you moving onto bigger better things 👏🏼
First thing I would do. Put a disconnect switch on that backup alarm. I hope it doesn’t bother trailer twisted when wood installed. I missed your deck install. Ok got to it. Glad you rejected liquid nails. BTW cell phones can tell you audibly who is calling. You can then ignore it.
RE your dogs. Put them on either side but leave the handle for hood. A mounted step will help getting on trailer.
Hey bud it's all a learning game. Many more to come , but you'll get it done!
Can I also say, you have been driving your long trailer for long time, you shouldn't have much of a issue.. Good luck with your new venture,..
Thanks martyn!
The trick is to use your air leaving system,.... and to use your difflocks off road
That damn back up alarm would have to go!
Haha
some places require them for you to haul there shit. unfortunately
@@wranglerdave6452 Their shit can stay on their dock.
for the bags on the back it really depend on the trailer some trailer when you pull the red knobs will dump the air in there bags and some won't so to make sure check if you got the same result when the red knob is push if yes you might have bags problem hope not
Great video brother I’ve been driving for a while that’s awesome to see you doing this and awesome that you’re filming all the procedures and steps of doing it right on man keep it up. Cheers
Robert, so if you lower the trailer so the tractor lifts the trailer a bit when you back under it the landing gear will be easy to jack up. I use to do this.
That is what most of the newer drivers do that are lazy. It then pushes the grease off the 5th wheel and piles it on the frame.
@@happypappy6371 This is what a lot of the experienced drivers do so it is easier to jack up the landing gear. If grease is getting pushed onto the frame then some idiot put too mush grease on the fifth wheel.
@@motorbikemadness5773 It's not the experienced drivers. It is the lazy drivers. The experienced drivers know it pushes the grease off the 5th wheel. A dry 5th wheel puts added stress on the front end of the truck and makes it harder to steer on slick roads. Experienced drivers will lower the landing gear and then drop the air bags if so equipped to pull in and out.
@@happypappy6371 Correct
Also if you can hook up a dump valve for your axles, you can dump the bags on one axle an not worry about tight maneuvers in yards and such, but not going down the road
I'm not sure if there's enough room
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot might be a pain but maybe worth it. I know spread reefers usually have them so your not scrubbing the tires and dragging that front axle loaded. But they're usually backing i to tight docks.
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot it should just be a valve an air lines. It just dumps the air out of say the front axle air bags. It doesn't lift the axle up any but it does take pressure off the tires so they scoot on the ground better.
@@kalebrivers5260 ahhhh I see. I'll look into that for sure
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot if you want to get fancy enough, you can put valves on both axles an run them to switches in the cab. Then you can dump and maneuver while in the cab of the truck, even make it pivot off that front axle. Ideas for on down the road. Been watching awhile and nice to see you grow.
Lesson learned...one thing to remember make sure you don't high hook the trailer..the trailer should lift a little when you back under it.. you should get a good coupling..then a good tug test ..just trying to help you not hate'n on you I have 33 yrs in the industry . Just stay safe my friend keep on keeping on......
Never ever worry about new tires on front spread...!!!...NEVER EVER...UNLESS you have a lift or dump valve....You will rip all new tread extremely fast...while hurting hubs...you will learn...as you feel the pull around every corner...oh that's right...you will not because of the power of the Semi...😣...rip rip rip...also...3 point exit..??..WOW..
Looks good with the decking done.
Get those black and yellow boxes with lids from home depot and put shit in them and then put them in those boxes to keep stuff dry
There are specific deck screws made for what your doing, you have to pre-drill
You will find that that trailer will take a lot more room to turn a corner with the axle at the very end of the trailer compared to your 40 foot gooseneck because axles are so far forward
With the other trailer, he had to watch for tail swing.
Use the self tapping screw designed for. Trailers, the screw has a wood wings and a metal of self tapping on end.also use the Dewalt split tip drill buts
Good morning, the question your son asked had me rollin."DO WE NEED TO PICK UP ALL THE WOOD"?SEEMS LIKE HE WAS UPSET YOU HAD HIM WORKING. KIDS THESE DAYS ARE TOO MUCH INTO HAVING EVERYTHING HANDED TO THEM.
Funny story, well to me anyway: bought a little JD 350C dozer from a seller in NY and had it transported to NE Texas a few years back. Told the broker NO RAMPS AVAILABLE to unload so make sure it was a detachable tongue equipment trailer or ramped trailer. Came in on a drop deck flat bed similar to yours with no ramps. Crap. Hooked onto one of my gooseneck equipment trailers and backed to the drop deck to drive from it to my trailer then drop my ramps and unload from my trailer. Then the bull shit with the driver started. First he wanted to line his trailer with lumber so the dozer tracks wouldn't scratch his trailer. I asked the obvious if that was done when it was loaded and he said no and his deck got scratched and he didn't want more scratches. Well I said do you have lumber? No he said. Are you going to drop your trailer and go get some I asked? No he said. Well slick I said: you got 2 options: either I unload my dozer and send you on your way or I call the broker and demand payment returned since you won't allow me to unload and you can haul the dozer back to NY and return it to the seller. He thought a moment and I unloaded my dozer(without scratching his trailer). THEN the stupid SOB asked me when I was going to sweep his trailer. I just walked away, went to my office, called the broker and got him fired.
Brokers don't have the authority to fire a driver.
@@happypappy6371 They do have the authority to not give the driver future loads. They also have the authority to spread the word to other brokers about "problem" drivers. All people talk and that includes business's.
@@amossnowdaharleyman9179 That is true, just as drivers have the option to not haul for a bad broker and to tell other drivers about that broker. But as for having the "authority" to do anything, they don't. it is just their option on how they run their business as a broker or driver. But still comes back to, they can't fire a driver. He will still go on driving and just not use that broker. I've had multiple brokers I've decided to not use any more.
Drill Dr is the shit , its saved me hundreds in drill bits . Things are looking up for you .
Tug test, verify fifth wheel handle and check lock jaw.. takes a whole 15 seconds and it’s better safe then sorry. 7 years ago I didn’t do my checks and was going down the highway at 65 mph and had my trailer completely detach from my fifth wheel (lucky for me there was no traffic behind me). Not worth the risk, damage and cost for carelessness and it’s outright embarrassing.
On a side note. You’re going to love living on the road with actual living space.. I couldn’t fathom doing hotshot and living in a normal car.. hell no...
Good looking setup, Robert. Congrats
You should be thankful that trailer turned out to be a 97 model, that means it's pre emissions! Haha.....
Seriously I'm impressed with how the rig is coming together and appreciate your efforts.
Rear air bags are just bunched up from sitting. They will straighten out after a few bumps or when you get some weight on it. If you hook up an electric air dump solenoid valve to the rear trailer axle it makes it easier for tight turns, so you can dump the rear axle air and the trailer will turn on the front axle. Also that fixed spread probably isn’t legal to run in Florida or California.
Florida runs fixed spread axles.
@@happypappy6371 Yes, as long as your under 41’ from kingpin to center of spread.
Pre drill hole (smaller hole than the screw)
Large sheet metal screws or lag bolts
Fender washers and lock washers
i forgot you cut the bolts they are harder than the frame steel. you can sharpen a masonery bit the same as for steel bits, to cut harder metal with the carbide on the end
They drop deck with new boards and paint looks good! 💪
I don't know if it was just me, but I always pulled forward after hitching up to the trailer to make sure it was locked in place. That way if it wasn't, I didn't have the legs up and everything attached.
It looked the liked the trailer brakes were still locked. When you first tried to move it. Some trailers take few minutes to charge the air tanks and release the brakes. But it does not matter as you got it moved. When ever you pull with your pickup like this lock the hubs and use 4 low. It is a lot easier on the running gear. Use cooking oil for drilling holes in the steel. First dill through the wood the dip the bit in oil. Also you can use soap on the screws. The only thing I don`t understand is all the decking screws I have used are self drilling. Another nice video.
On the trailer, you could of run flat bar across the boards and welded/ bolted it down on the trailers and saved from all those screws. Done it that way on a RGN trailer.
Drill small pilot hole first then use the bigger one with lots of lube .like thread cutting oil or even just plain motor oil.i have bits that I've been using for years without having to sharpen. Love the new truck and trailer set up.
Are you going to seal the wood with Thompson Water Seal? If you weren’t going to I highly recommend sealing the wood. I sealed my BigTex right after I got it and the deck still looks new almost 4 months later.
it looks new at 4 months old because it IS NEW STILL! LOL I agree though, seal it and keep up on the deck cleaning and sealer and it will last much longer.
When you ge the 3Dprinting done and are happy with it, go to a metal shop that does lost wax casting... There was one in Old Town Conyers back when Iived there... But they can cast the 3d into Bronze, which would screw onto the hood... and be sturdier..
You should've done what you could've done before you did it since you knew it would work. Lmao! I just wanted to act like I was giving advice. 🤣🤣🤣 Keep up the hard work, driver.
Freaking awesome 👏 really great job adding new boards on the trailer deck congrats buddy on your new equipment.
used to have a trailer repair shop and used a self-drilling screw made for screwing down trailer decking.
You can run 5/16 chains on semi most guys do unless they run certain freight alot. Like coils od machinery 5/16 works great on guard rail and pipe.
You lock both rears to pull together. It's switch on the dash somewhere.
You are going to wish that you had used oak boards!!!!
Yeah maybe
Hope you also have a switch to dumb a valve to raise and lower your axles on the trailer it will help a lot!!!good luck on the new endeavor!
Trailer tires will wear out quicker than you think, alot of tire scrubbing turning and backing.
I redecked a trailer but use decking screws! self-tapping s/s with big heads, made for that job! cost but they work!
Your going to have fun with that spread axle backing atleast it's not sitting all the way in the back. It's not to bad when you get use to it but it's definitely different. Look into setting up one of the axles up as a lift I did it to mine an I love it.
Yeah it's a bit*h to back lol. I was thinking about a lift axle. But it doesn't look like there's enough room with stepdeck to do this. Do you have a flatbed?
@@SouthGeorgiahotshot yes it will barely lift it off the ground but all your really trying to do now is relieve pressure from one of the axles so you have a better pivot point
If need a headache rack I have one and flatbed stuff. Step deck looks great. Be safe and have a blessed day
Great job on that deck. Looks real good! Best of luck to y’all
Air leaks thats funny. Welcome to the world of trucking !
Questions,
First taking a test in Florida doesn't give you a Georgia CDL driver's license ? Why didn't you go to the school in Green cove springs, Fl. ? It's like an hour from the Ga. State line .
Now didn't that school in plant city show or tell you that when you hook up to the trailer you should put the tractor in low forward and pull forward . That and get.out and look at the 5th wheel jaw to see if it locked.around the pin !
Trust me the jaw can set or close while pulling under the trailer . The way Yu did was to look at the release hand. When Yu hook up the trailer and air lines then pull forward wham the trailer hits the ground .
Now yu damaged the load and have to pay for a wrecker to pickup the trailer !
Always check the jaws by looking at it under the trailer.
Also put the air shifter on the Low side. Your tractor looked to be.going too fast backing. And there should be a switch that read Diff. Switch, that locks your tandem axles when in a muddy spot..
Go find a parking lot or better yet a terminal and learn to back that old spread axle trailer. Your going to bust some tires if you don't learn to back correctly. And remember to swing WIDE when turning.
You should go to a junk yard for semi's or trailer shop and get 2 spare tire holders ? One for each side. That way you'll have spares paid for !!!
It will be cheaper.in the long run. Tires at a truck shop are very expensive.
Also you might think about putting a headache rack on the front of that trailer ?
That or you will have to put one.on the semi ? It stops the load from going thru your sleeper if Yu hit the brakes.too hard !
Putting it on the trailer would be better..
You can buy Recap tires for the trailer from Tennessee Recappers there cheaper.
Now you need to learn to down shift property. Especially going down hills and.mountain grades. Best advise is find a medium gear that lets go like 45 to 50 mph. The steaper the.down grade the lower the gear Yu need.to.use.
Especially going out west or in the mountains of the east.? If Yu don't listen to this advise your going to have a run away rig and crash. Don't be afrade to use a runoff ramp !!
Better than the side of.a mountain. Go try going down Mount Eagle on I-75 in North Georgia going into Tennessee. It's a small mountain but it has wrecked alot of rigs.
Go up and down it a few times to learn how to.down shift properly and.to up shift going up !
You need the lessons .
Drive a semi flatbed or.box trailer is way harder than that F-250 with a 5th wheel trailer. Backing is just as bad. You have to learn to use the mirrors only.
Finally Put that PTO eq. Back on your rig. Again you can pull dump trailer and some lowboy's.
You should have either leased out for.your.first year. That way you wouldn't have to worry about trailer tires, breaks, or insurance. And pulling a sliding tandem is better to start with. You also have to remember your tractors fifth wheel slides also.
Or it should.
Now you never said how many gears that mac has ?
7 speed, 9, 10,.13,15 or 18 gears ?? Or the rears gear ratio ?
When in the mountains those means alot. The right setup keeps you from working too hard. And hopefully you'll learn to speed shift ?
Your going to find out driving a semi ain't no easy job. That wet line kit and a dump trailer would make.you just as much if not more money than that flatbed ?
And you can lease trailers rather than buy ?
Dry box and Refer trailers make better money than flatbeds.
Now you have to buy bigger longer chains and binders. If Yu put a headache rack on the trailer you can hang them on that rack. And lock them !
Good.luck
Go practice backing and shifting !!!
Order self drilling square drive screws. Used them to change decking in my box truck years ago
They make self drilling screws that work great you still need to predrill
Save all of your tires. Used semi tires are $250 each. If your lucky. Always keep a couple with you.
another FYI the petro Iowa 80 sell the custom fit window shades.co.makes them for aircraft. fit perfect too. made in signal hill California..
you need self tapping deck screws to hold down the deck. any trailer place should have them by the box.
Get rid of that backup alarm before you piss everybody off at the truck stop....
I really like your truck, and the trailer is coming together.
Also some states can be stinkers for the true measurement of the spread axle, so you want to know if they are just over 10 feet or not.
Your not a disgusting person Robert. Your dirty hands just showed you had been working hard. Love the idea of getting your dogs on the front of your truck. Hope it works out. Your dog Nula is such a pretty dog. I loved the picture you had of her on Instagram with the headphones on her ears .
Paint the trailer wheels to mach the truck. Looks good
Replace lights with leds . Self tapper tapper screws. And i hope you used treated wood .
Great job. The neighbor that doesn't wave at you is the one who will call the city on you, for working on your truck or trailer in front and leaving them in the street. Every street has one. Jpol.
Black out the wheels on the trailer to match the truck.
Yeah maybe. Function over looks for now lol
Remember when you back up, follow the front axle on the trailer not the back one.
Love the white truck with black rims !!
Ford Power baby
You steady ordering stuff, what about making some money with all this equipment? I bet the UPS and FedEx folks are coming by on a daily-
I enjoy the videos!
Yes everyday I know them by name they come by so much lol 😆
Deck looks good, how is it backing that spread axle?
You might wanna disconnect the back up beeper on the truck our you many get your but kicked late at night in the truck stops seen it before
U can put 2 job boxes on upper deck i used to pull step deck like that tarps padding straps stayed dry in job boxes
Robert.disconect the back up buzzer.when you back in a spot at night you will not pass others off..lock ur dies in..
It’s a possibility it’s airlines the little red or blue rubber rings inside it could be bad you can replace those
Hopefully this truck is good to you and it makes you money before these new Tesla semi’s start taking over. It’s crazy how fast and powerful they are. No more changing gears every dummy is gonna behind the seat of one of these things eventually 😯
You probably already know but Super Trucker Dan is a good flat bed driver to follow. You might be able to get some helpful info from him.
Lmao it’s watever dude I’m not waiving to him anymore lmao I’m dying
I know this may sound like a stupid comment but did you happen to see a diff lock function button on your dash board. Its help on uneven terrain .
Your deck looks very nice.
Should build your old flatbed into an rv to live in while you're building out your homestead
We plan on making it a toy hauler.
Not an expert...but I would have hooked up side ways to avoid getting stuck...I think I’ve done it once or twice...it’s a learning process buddy😉
Wow what a Swift move dude
Hell ya just remember to always do a tug test and always get u der the trailer to verify that the jaws on the fifth wheel is locked dont wanna be another statstic
I hate to be the barer of bad news, but the boards are most likely going to twist and warp, and pull up, and shrink, after being in the weather, (hopefully not, but Iv'e seen it happen) and you'll have to redo the deck within a year or two. And instead of $500 in home depot lumber, maybe you'll use the proper shiplap oak, which will cost $2500+.
