Probably my favorite cheap film. I think that if you over expose it a bit you get rid of the green cast that is typical of the film, thus producing excellent results for most occasions.
Really good pictures in the underground! My first experience with film photography was with this film stock but the images came too magenta. I prefer the look of yours. Maybe the lab's modus operandi and scanning wasn't as good😢
yea seriously! it was bizarre. i literally got lost underground because they closed my usual underground tunnel at oxford circus. its very eerie down there
Just wanted to say that your videos are really well done. As for the film, I have enjoyed the use of the film, especially during a trip I made to Japan. Since Kodak's price increases, I really do think its the best everyday film one can use
Hey Ribs - Great Tube shots - really dig the image at 1:38. This Fuji is my go-to color stock - very versatile (and my local photography store has it in stock at a good price).
thanks! yea it was cool to take some shots in the tube when its empty. i think i will def be shooting more of it, assuming i can find the best deal. so far 7.90 gbp is the cheapest i've seen online which i still consider too steep
Thanks for explaining so well what was typical in each picture for this film. I wouldn’t have noticed on my iPad sceen. Good choice of inside/outside examples to show what the film does. Thanks for your neutrality. You helped me a lot. I have the luxury of several film backs, so I am going to try the film when I don’t need warmer colours or good skin tones. Robert.
for sure! my pleasure. lots of different possible looks out there and its fun to try different and see what kinds of results you can get. very please with this one
I really think you hit it on the nail when you said that the film has a grungy/urban esthetic. Most of the time when I use this film stock, I’ll use it in parties are, hanging out in the city or at a concert. Great video btw.
Love this film! Its my go to for 95% of my work because its fairly cheap, super accessible (literally get it from my local walmart) and its capable of taking wonderful photos!
I just shot a roll of this film stock for the first time. You described it perfectly as a great option for city life. I did mostly still life street and a few nature landscapes and I am happy with the high contrast, grain with an emphasis on green colors. Excellent video !
I just ordered a 3 pack of this film off of B&H for $11.99. It was back ordered for a while which is understandable, because that's a steal. I haven't shot this film stock before and this video gave me some good insight. Subscribed
Really enjoying your content. It's fun and easy to follow. I picked up a cheap Zeiss folding camera like you have, which is how I found this channel. Looking forward to test it out, thinking of also doing the negatives (not sure what the term is in English lol) but I'm gonna do it at home in my garage or so
I love this film for trips, I used it when I travelled to London and I loved it. Also used it once for taking portraits at night using street lights as light source and the grain looked amazing.
Also this film superis 400 extra really helps with the cloudy weather, where it helps draw out those colors that could and would normally be lacking due to clouds. Pretty nice.
Love this film and good video! I actually really love this film for portraits. I used it on a cloudy day in the city and it warmed up the skin tones, but this could also have been the scanner process as well. There is a pink tone to the highlights with this film and green for the shadows but also depends on the scanner used.
Really great video man, new subscriber over here! This has encouraged me to buy some for the first time, I think it would work great in the Barbican area of LDN
I am Canadian and I used to shoot this film alot because of availability and price. Unfortunately the price has gone up and it is not as easy to find since the drug stores are not really carrying it much anymore. I agree with your assessment of what it is good for in terms of subjects. I shoot mostly black and white now but it is good urban street option for colour. Interesting side note: the latitude on this film is surprisingly good. I accidentally over exposed a roll by 4 stops and still got usable images. Colour film (especially the cheap stuff) usually doesn't hold up if over or underexposed too much. Also having shot some expired Superia it seems to just get grainier and grainier. You don't get weird colour shifts like with kodak.
I have used a lot of this in 35mm and 120 lately in my 1960 Rolleiflex 2.8F Planar and i think it gives very good results --- all my Fuji 400 X-TRA is outdated but I rate it at 200 ASA and negs are perfect.
Not the biggest fan of Fuji colour print film and mainly use B&W now days but always had good results with Superia Xtra 400 and would pick it up frequently. After the price increase agree it seems slightly over priced and would like to try maybe something like Kodak Image Pro 100 albeit it doesn't have the speed of Superia
thank you for making this review! it is so well-made and i really appreciate how you recommend the scenes where this film stock would work best. agree with you on how it doesn't handle skin tones really well, it came out magenta-ish. personally for shooting greeneries i overexpose them by +1 or +2. it gives off pastel green look and i find myself really enjoying the look. great photos you got there! cheers
I "redscaled" a roll of Superia Xtra 400 (shot at ISO 100 to compensate for the light loss) and the results are amazing ! I highly recommend it. In case anyone doesn't know what a redscale fillm is : the negative film is respooled (in absolute darkness) so taht the film is shot not directly on the emulsion side, but through the plastic backing layer. It gives a redish/yellowish tint to the image and looks really good with pictures of derelict objects. It gives a post apocalyptic vibe IMO).
I shot some Fuji superia I'm back in February on a very overcast day. I don't really like the look in the few colors that were in my scenes actually did give a nice little pop to the image.
I know I'm late to the party commenting on this one Ribsy, but I couldn't agree more about this stock. Recently Wal-Mart started carrying sparse amounts of this stock in 3-packs for a good price, and while I do as much as I can to support my local brick and mortar small film store, Main Street Photo Video in Norman, Ok (if you're ever around the area or from here, please stop in, they're a great business with quality ownership, management, and friendly staff, plus they always have a plethora of old cameras you can give a second life to, at reasonable prices, if it is not clear by now, I love them,) and try to buy as much of my stock from them as I can, but the expense is definitely a factor I have to take into more consideration these days, bulk-loading 16mm into 110 cartridges, and getting ready to dive into bulk-loading 35mm Kodak vision 3 for cost savings, but I try and keep a keen eye out for these 3-packs at Wal-Mart and snatch them up. Back to the point though. Fuji Superia 400 is a great all-around stock for pretty much anything but portraits, at an affordable price for color film these days. I'm also a big fan of Fujicolor 200, which I feel has similar qualities, just given the choice and ideal lighting conditions, I've come to the realization that given the choice I'll always err toward 200 rather than 400, or as in the case of Porta, 160 as opposed to 400. Great points and great video as always Ribsy. Late to the party subscribing to your channel, so I'm trolling through your back catalog, but better late than never, and hopefully I've added something useful to the conversation. Best, Levi.
I would also say, Ultrafine Extreme 400/100 black and white film, rolls and bulk 100ft. Is super underrated. It handles and delivers midtones and highlights and contrast way nicer then fomopan/arista/kentmere. It was $39 for 100ft. For over a year, and now when it's in stock it is a little more, but it's a modest film. Packaged modestly, no bragging here, but the results are quite nice.
I love the almost pastel colours of Xtra 400, as well as the grain. It was my first film when I started doing film photography again, and I love it so much I will probably always circle back to it. It works extremely well on my old Voigtländer and Fed 5 rangefinder cameras, and of course on my Praktica MTL5 SLR "mirror-slapper" (god it's loud...) with a Helios 44M lens.
I've totally forgot about this film but that's actually the one that's being sold in one of the malls in the center together with some tmax i used to grab some whenever i was low on film...
I shot with this in an indoor setting with warm lighting and mainly portraits: bad idea. The colours came out very saturated with magenta (almost orange) highlights and green shadows. It could've been the lab processing and scanning, but I also think that probably this film isn't suitable for indoor warm lighting and for portraits.
When you have a lot of green or blue and a lot of sun this film does some crazy stuff. Its the best cheap film on the market. You will get good results and it will perform. It has a saturated look for a color negative film. Its tack sharp when you use a good lens and camera.
hey! it retails for $5-7 in the US from what i've seen. B&H has a good price. if you do a currency exchange and add VAT, the UK price still seems too much
back when i started film photography, xtra 400 was the first i loaded in to my A-1. The look is definely more refined from the c200 that i use nowdays but like you mentioned, the price being so high compared to c200 (double here in finland) and the look being not too different with the grain still being on c200 level, i cant really justify it. Its fun to compare and pick a roll here and there but being able to shoot away with c200 for so much cheaper, its a unfortunate pass when it comes to the xtra 400. Other than that, good video as always, was nice to see a little different perspective to the current world situation through your shots.
The Superia Xtra 400 looks great with artificial light but with natural light this film (or the C200 which is more underrated I guess^^) can get quite messy but in terms of "underrated-ness" I'd say that the Kodak Gold 200 might be even more underrated.
Yea i agree. the superia 400 is a bit iffy in natural light, but specifically very sunny scenes. nonetheless, for US prices, i think its a good deal especially at ISO 400. makes it very usable across several scenarios.
Now this film the best bang for the buck. And I would strongly disagree that it’s not great for sunlight or portraits. It’s a bit on the grungy side at 400 ASA but becomes perfectly pleasant in sunlight between 250-320 ASA. The green cast is pretty much gone at 250ASA. And it has a nice consumer film pop at 200 ASA. It definitely is a bit harder to print/scan for skin tones, but perfectly capable of delivering really nice skin tones with some care. It’s also nice to have a film that can really capture the magenta in skins. It’s really good for dark skins too. Again 250-320 is the sweet spot. And the one thing this film doesn’t get the credit it deserves for, is its ability to capture tungsten light naturally. It’s the best film for tungsten lighting after CineStill 800T. It’s not as spot on as that or a digital camera set to 3200K but much more natural that any of the Kodak films.
I personally don't like this film stock. It has too much of a green cast. I can't edit my scans to increase brightness without all my shadows becoming an icky green I don't like. I prefer the warmer tones of Kodak over this. I need to try some of their cheaper offerings to see how I like it. But I've shot a lot of Fuji and just can never get behind that green look.
Bro I’m not kidding a week ago I went to Walmart and saw this film for 18$ and I also checked online to make sure and it was 18$ and now it’s 38$ like bro in a week wtf I should’ve gotten the whole supply
Probably my favorite cheap film. I think that if you over expose it a bit you get rid of the green cast that is typical of the film, thus producing excellent results for most occasions.
Yea I dig it! Don’t mind the green for certain scenes
I've definitely gotten some good nature shots with this stock, surprisingly it even outperformed Pro 400h at one point! Thank you for a great review
Glad it was useful. Yea superia is fun. Very capable and I really like the look
Really good pictures in the underground! My first experience with film photography was with this film stock but the images came too magenta. I prefer the look of yours. Maybe the lab's modus operandi and scanning wasn't as good😢
thanks! yea def a film worth trying again
So weird seeing the tube so empty. Photos were nice, man.
yea seriously! it was bizarre. i literally got lost underground because they closed my usual underground tunnel at oxford circus. its very eerie down there
Just wanted to say that your videos are really well done. As for the film, I have enjoyed the use of the film, especially during a trip I made to Japan. Since Kodak's price increases, I really do think its the best everyday film one can use
thanks for the kind words 😊. Yea I agree, it's nice to have alternatives given kodak's price hike. this film is a good bargain (outside of the UK).
Hey Ribs - Great Tube shots - really dig the image at 1:38. This Fuji is my go-to color stock - very versatile (and my local photography store has it in stock at a good price).
thanks! yea it was cool to take some shots in the tube when its empty. i think i will def be shooting more of it, assuming i can find the best deal. so far 7.90 gbp is the cheapest i've seen online which i still consider too steep

yup! exactly that makes it very versatile for those who live in cities, which is a lot of people 😊. thanks for supporting!
Love this film! Its my go to for 95% of my work because its fairly cheap, super accessible (literally get it from my local walmart) and its capable of taking wonderful photos!
I can see why! It’s a fantastic performing film. Look to use more of it fall comes.
I just shot a roll of this film stock for the first time. You described it perfectly as a great option for city life. I did mostly still life street and a few nature landscapes and I am happy with the high contrast, grain with an emphasis on green colors. Excellent video !

yea the zeiss is awesome. really cool to shoot super old cameras.
Great vid and really nice pics. So, what would be your film suggestion for warm sunlight?
No clue. Give it a try 😀
I love this film for trips, I used it when I travelled to London and I loved it.

agreed!
Nice photos. I agree with you, Superia 400 is good at cloudy days.
Yea! Def a great way to make the most of cloudy days
Just loaded my Canon A1 with it. Looking forward to seeing the end product. Thanks for your post!
good luck
Nice review! This is my favorite film. Great value when bought as a 3 pack here in the USA
yea! sounds like its a great deal in the US. thanks for watching
I LOVE Superia 400. I always have to make sure I have some around. When you get exposure right, it just looks so cool.
agreed. it often delivers a great "look" out the box with no need for tinkering. 💪🏽
Love this film and good video! I actually really love this film for portraits. Really great video man, new subscriber over here!

hey! yea i def think the film will do well dell. the brutalist architecture lends itself well to that

Hey man! Just wanted to say, amazing video showcasing the versatility of Fuji Superia 400 :) Did you shoot this at box speed?
hey! thanks for watching. yup shot at box speed 😊
Doing Film Things Thanks for the follow up ☺️

Nice photos! Will have to try this film out!
yea def give it a go!

Sounds pretty cool!
That's my fave film. I specialise on botanical photography so I love how Superia works with green colors 🌿💚
oh yea! fuji films really make green pop
I’m finishing my second roll of this film, I was very happy with the previous results
nice! yea this film is pretty cool. i don't shoot it often but i really do appreciate
Dang Ribsy thats beards wavey brotha lol, great video I'd love to see you shoot this around Brixton #Londonlovesyou
haha thats throwback ribs right there. one day it will come again!
I shot some Fuji superia I'm back in February on a very overcast day. I don't really like the look in the few colors that were in my scenes actually did give a nice little pop to the image.
yea its an interesting film stock. definitely has a unique color palette
What canon body you was using ? Nice vids
thanks! i was using the Canon 300v 😊

ahh good point!
this is one of my favorite films for sure
yea! i plan to shoot more of it
I really like this film! I like that it’s available and I can get it at common stores (not just photo supply stores).
Yea it’s a good one
Ooh, loved the one with the blue-green screens on either side underground and the phone box shot. 👍😍
thanks! yea i got lucky with the screens. they displayed very interesting colors
I love the almost pastel colours of Xtra 400, as well as the grain. It was my first film when I started doing film photography again, and I love it so much I will probably always circle back to it. It works extremely well on my old Voigtländer and Fed 5 rangefinder cameras, and of course on my Praktica MTL5 SLR "mirror-slapper" (god it's loud...) with a Helios 44M lens.
yea i like it! it gives a very obvious "film look" haha
I paid $20 for three rolls totaling to 108 pictures in total... I’m starting film photography so I’m excited to see how the images turn out
thats a good deal!! good luck
Have a serious love for this film, dont shoot it as much anymore was xtra800. but always did me propeer
Never tried the 800 one!
I 100% agree - our comparison vs Ultramax400 was conclusive IMHO haha!
haha fair enough
Love your videos man!
Thanks for watching!
Nice review! Superia 400 is solid!
thanks! yea i think thats the perfect word for it!
those shots really captured that emptiness feeling. good shit
thanks! appreciate it. although it wasn't too difficult - it really was that empty 😊
I've totally forgot about this film but that's actually the one that's being sold in one of the malls in the center together with some tmax
i used to grab some whenever i was low on film...
yea it flies under the radar. its very capable 👍🏽
When shooting in the Tube, what shutter speed and aperture did you use? What lens?
hey - i don't remember exactly but it was probably wide open at F4 and somewhere around 1/60 of a second
ive got some of the most portra 400 looking photos using superia 400 ahah its my favorite film & available literally anywhere, crazy!
Haha that’s interesting
I love this film ,the only complaint is when scanning, isn't that flat how I wish ..but colors are beautiful
haha yes, mine wasn't flat either. wasn't terrible but def a slight pain 😊
Great shots n info on the film
thanks!! appreciate the support
Hi! I saw in the back you have an Olympus, I just bought the OM-10, Would this type of film work with my camera? Thank you!
Yea it definitely will! Any 35mm film wills work just fine 😀
I really like the information i recently got a canon rebel 2000 playing with Fuji color film 200
oh nice! yea that should be a good combination
Definitely a good film for an urban environment. It's not cheap at all here in Canada either $16 for a roll.
Wow 16?! That’s wild
Nice video. Enjoying your channel. Mainstream film anyone can use; great for everyday photos. Agree with you that the green is strong in this one...
Thanks for watching 😀
Thanks for watching 😀
I shot with this in an indoor setting with warm lighting and mainly portraits: bad idea. The colours came out very saturated with magenta (almost orange) highlights and green shadows. It could've been the lab processing and scanning, but I also think that probably this film isn't suitable for indoor warm lighting and for portraits.
fair enough! i agree its best outdoors
When you have a lot of green or blue and a lot of sun this film does some crazy stuff. Its the best cheap film on the market. You will get good results and it will perform. It has a saturated look for a color negative film. Its tack sharp when you use a good lens and camera.
yes! i was very impressed with this film. it does have a bit of a saturated look but in a good way
What’s the UK like compared to the US? (If you have been to the US)
hey! it retails for $5-7 in the US from what i've seen. B&H has a good price. if you do a currency exchange and add VAT, the UK price still seems too much
back when i started film photography, xtra 400 was the first i loaded in to my A-1. Other than that, good video as always, was nice to see a little different perspective to the current world situation through your shots.
agreed. i need to try out c200 - don't think i've ever used it. def a bit strange to experience the tube this way. thanks for supporting 💪🏽
I like the deep, moody, almost gloomy colors I get when doing long exposures in low light situations with it.
Yea the moody ones look hood
I managed to find 16 rolls at a discount grocery store for $1.00 each. Slightly outdated, but still works fine.
wow! that's amazing. great haul 💪🏽
My first choice for all purpose in my photography
Not a bad choice!
Definitely most underrated.
for sure! more for us 😊
very detail review, thanks
Thanks for watching 😃
Can you download the photos on your laptop? Or do you have to go to a store or something like that? ://
I dunno what you mean
I wanna know what kinda camera he used for this film
in some, he used a tlr style camera. the rest were 35mm
which scaner do you you for that film and these shots? Thanks!
Those were scanned with my old epson 550, I don’t own it anymore tho
The Superia Xtra 400 looks great with artificial light but with natural light this film (or the C200 which is more underrated I guess^^) can get quite messy but in terms of "underrated-ness" I'd say that the Kodak Gold 200 might be even more underrated.
Yea i agree. the superia 400 is a bit iffy in natural light, but specifically very sunny scenes. nonetheless, for US prices, i think its a good deal especially at ISO 400. makes it very usable across several scenarios.
Just got a free Olympus om-G and 3 rolls of this for $5.
LETS GOOOOOO
wow!! that's a deal 🤟🏽
Whats that website at 0:45 where you were searching for film?
b and h
Check out Bill Cunningham's work. He used Superia a lot
Oh very cool! Didn’t know that - will do 😀

Muito obrigada explicar como a câmera é. Estou começando a me interessar por fotografia, acho que ela é uma boa escolha. Good video, thank youuu.🇧🇷❤
thanks for watching!
here in germany it is a more expensive film. it costs around 15€ but i really like it. it has great colors.
Wow that’s pricey. But yea, it’s cool!
thanks!!! really nice video
thanks for watching
Here in brazil the Kodak films are more than double the price of the Fuji ones
wow thats crazy!
I just shot a role of it, but havent scanned it yet, lets see how it looks...
i thnk you might like it!
Do you recommend any website where I can buy some films?
Depends where you are. UK try analogue wonderland
I've been using it just because it's the only thing available here locally 😂 I've gotten some good results on it though.
Haha well that’s not a bad deal then!
Is this film discontinued or they still doing it?
na its still available. usually very easy to find too
Did you shoot it boxspeed?
Yup I did
Is it worth living in the UK?
Sure. Why not 😃
Superia is top secret good stuff.
haha i feel you!

Correct
>it's good for cloudy days
no wonder it's all over Britain.
Haha good call
I personally don't like this film stock. It has too much of a green cast. I can't edit my scans to increase brightness without all my shadows becoming an icky green I don't like. I prefer the warmer tones of Kodak over this. I need to try some of their cheaper offerings to see how I like it. But I've shot a lot of Fuji and just can never get behind that green look.
Most film can’t handle underexposure in the shadows
ayy i live in bristol and use bristol cameras!
nice! i use them a bit too 😊
i like it more than ultramax, the color's in ultramax are too saturated for my taste, this film performs quite well even in low light situations..
ahh fair enough. i actually prefer the saturation of ultramax - i like bright colors 😊. but yea, superia is awesome.
Bro I’m not kidding a week ago I went to Walmart and saw this film for 18$ and I also checked online to make sure and it was 18$ and now it’s 38$ like bro in a week wtf I should’ve gotten the whole supply
Wow that’s crazy
I am still finding it for sale for 18 dollars at Walmarts, but everywhere else like 10 dollars more.
Probably will be a bit higher after brexit is finalized... Loved the video man. Keep it up! :)
haha of course ... 😅
thank u !
Np!
I like this 👌
sweet!
ooooh this is great

Agreed. This stock is dirty AF. Purple cast for days. Cheers!
Yea it can get messy
