I've been watching all Bass VI videos I can find and if anyone else played Black Knight in every single one of those videos I'd be pretty annoyed, but when Phil does it I just find it hilarious! Gots to love the X-Man!
when i was 11-12 years old from 10 years i looked every fretted americana video and looked every video absolute minimum 10 times and try to play the licks from phil hes a big inspiration. thanks you guys and phil
No, Phil, you're not the only one who thinks a Bass VI with fuzz sounds fucking amazing. You're probably in the minority in hating on Burgundy Mist, though.
if its "regular e" but on bass... is it possible to play chords? it might be hard but, is it posible to do sweep picking? it could be so badass to play some malmsteen or jason becker on that kind of monster... but if cliff burton did what he did, someone could do that to, right?
There's a video titled "1962 Fender Bass VI Demo with 50's Bassman Amp". In this video (and the two other Bass VI videos by FrettedAmericana), the bass just sounds like a low guitar, whereas in the "Bassman Amp" video, it actually sounds like a bass.
can we get a look at some of your guys acutal basses soon? you guys posted sych great basses back in the day but you dont post em anymore :/ please do! thanks :D
@NapalmBBQ i prefer the bm (no mod) because every other od pedal ESPECIALLY the vintage tube screamer colors the midrange of the amp and even though the bm is a $39 pedal, i find it to be the most tonally transparent i've ever used.
Totally agree...I didn't know of him until a couple months ago, and didn't like him at first, but now I think he's freakin' hilarious...not to mention he's a great guitarist! Really a damn good singer, too. Go Phil!
You could say that in a way. The physicas term for what happes is wave interferention, I believe. Audably when two pickup coils are in phase with each other a lot of the bass frequances and some of the mids/highs are amplified, while if the coils are out of phase, those are reduced. A high-pass filter will behave slightly differently, but generally - in phase = fat, out of phase = thin.
I don't know what year that one is but it is a Les Paul Deluxe. You can tell because of the mini humbuckers. I think that is the one that you are talking about... Behind the red 335 on the back wall?
What does this "phase inverter" switch actually do? I read it's a bass cutoff. Is this what phase inversion in guitars usually does- act like a highpass filter?
@achickensandwich well i'm talking about seeing so actual basses soon! i'd love to see some rickenbacker basses again or maybe some jazz basses? idk anything like that.
@Digitbig its tuned like a four string bass with two higher strings, its pretty much a bass guitar if the shorter scale length mattered that Mustang basses are not basses then too i guess huh?
You don't look like much of a bassist to me man. I'd personally really feel really off using that thing, 'cause I'm used to the normal six string bass fretboard, but I really dig the sound of it, it's chunky!
Thanks! So... is this the actual reason for why humbuckers sound fatter than single coils, because a humbucker is basically two single coils connected in phase with each other?
I like the monkey as well. I currently have mine apart so I can do the bass mod, but you're making me rethink it. I like that it doesn't suck tone up even though it's not true bypass. Speaking of which what do you think of danelectro's transparent OD? Also why throw a digital sound in with all the analog action? Dang I have a ton of questions. Ever thought about doing pedal reviews?
@frettedamericana, Next time Phil demos another Fender VI, you should have him do every single combination of pickups & if possible can it be through a bass amp? because after all it is a bass :D please
@DDInDaHouse187 you can pick up a custom shop one on ebay for under 4k. i wish i had one too. schecter makes the hellcat 6 which can be used as a bass like this for under 700 bucks .
Playing bass while singing is impossible for me. Great music lesson here. Forget the lyrics. Just have fun and go for it. I'll never progress if I'm afraid of messing up the lyrics and vocal timing.
I've been watching all Bass VI videos I can find and if anyone else played Black Knight in every single one of those videos I'd be pretty annoyed, but when Phil does it I just find it hilarious!
Gots to love the X-Man!
dude what's wrong with Burgundy purple mist!?!? it's a freaking great color
I had the same colour but on a jazzmaster...man I regret selling it now..
when i was 11-12 years old from 10 years i looked every fretted americana video and looked every video absolute minimum 10 times and try to play the licks from phil hes a big inspiration. thanks you guys and phil
RIP-Tonemaster's speaker
I like how at first he's like "I miss the band..." and by the end he's having a blast. He makes me wanna play one of these.
Got to admit - Phil X looks like he's having so much fun! In these depressing time that we live in we need more Phil X!
Led Zeppelin + Deep Purple + Black Sabbath on a Bass VI I’m in heaven with the tone 😊
You are a really good vocalist and guitarist and ENTERTAINER...
The best sounding VI yet... !
Amazing bass, amazing Custom Color!
Phil X is my spirit animal
two in one bass-guitar which you can't beat that for sure, thanks PHIL X!
And, this has been the best Bass VI demo yet.
Aerosmith's Back In The Saddle was also recorded using a 6-string bass which Joe Perry played.
This is a great connection of bass and a guitar. I love this idea as well.
what is great with this guy is that he can roock out with anything :D
No, Phil, you're not the only one who thinks a Bass VI with fuzz sounds fucking amazing. You're probably in the minority in hating on Burgundy Mist, though.
Bass + Tonemaster BLEW MY MIND!!!
Pinch harmonics on a bass. Phil X, you know exactly how to make me happy.
I didn't know that guitars like this even existed....until Phil showed up on here with one :)
Regardless of the colour, I want that thing!
That overdriven tone is amazing - I can't help but feel bands like Queens of the Stone Age would jump on it
9:55 he shredded into the overdrive.
if its "regular e" but on bass... is it possible to play chords? it might be hard but, is it posible to do sweep picking? it could be so badass to play some malmsteen or jason becker on that kind of monster... but if cliff burton did what he did, someone could do that to, right?
I used to hate this guys videos....The more i see them the more i love them. Hes so fucking happy!
Indeed we do and that is what makes life so fantastic.
There's a video titled "1962 Fender Bass VI Demo with 50's Bassman Amp". In this video (and the two other Bass VI videos by FrettedAmericana), the bass just sounds like a low guitar, whereas in the "Bassman Amp" video, it actually sounds like a bass.
Editing is just soooo great! The thank you good night part is awesome!
I enjoy the fact that Phil loves a lot of things he doesn't know the name of.
this video is awesome, one of the best from phil x
PHIL X TRANSFORMANDO BAJOS EN GUITARRAS DESDE TIEMPOS INMEMORABLES.(PHIL X TRANSFORMING BASS TO GUITARS SINCE EVER)
@Digitbig well, i can be used as a baritone guitar, or a bass
but Fender intended it to be a Bass guitar
can we get a look at some of your guys acutal basses soon? you guys posted sych great basses back in the day but you dont post em anymore :/ please do! thanks :D
That is amazing, never heard/seen anything like it
This is the worst and best guitar ad ever made.
This bass sounds AMAZING!
@NapalmBBQ

That was a badass version of foxy lady!
Totally agree...I didn't know of him until a couple months ago, and didn't like him at first, but now I think he's freakin' hilarious...not to mention he's a great guitarist! Really a damn good singer, too. Go Phil!
Nope.. he's totally clean! Blessed with natural energy!
You could say that in a way. The physicas term for what happes is wave interferention, I believe. Audably when two pickup coils are in phase with each other a lot of the bass frequances and some of the mids/highs are amplified, while if the coils are out of phase, those are reduced.

@mdude6666 because the bridge is used for treble sounds and the neck is more of a bass sound it"s said like that on normal electric guitars too
The tone of the bass with the overdrive and bad monkey is like Stoner metal heaven.
As a bass player, I MUST OWN THIS
In fairport new York at Fab gear there is a vintage one and a left handed custom shop one for sale!
Wonder if you put 6 regular guit string gauged 11,49 could you play it the same way you play a strat?
He did record with it. And he uses it live to play I Miss You
@DominoDylan you can get one from us...we have it in stock. call or email us.
the actual incentive to buy this instruments is not that they are vintage but that they are played by phil x
What pedals are being used to create the tone from 4:30ish onwards?
bruh dazed and confused is hard af and its exhausting to play. not the intro when it kicks off.
@Smashi5 It's NIB by Sabbath
God I remember that episode of The Flintstones, the woman was called Lady Yes or something like that LOL. stupid good lookings
I think we're overlooking a major feature here. It's a bass that comes stock with a tremolo bridge. Kind've a big deal.
It's a strangle switch, not a phase switch..
gotta love him for playing blackmore riffs [=
Can you tell me about that Les Paul back there next to the 335?
He used it in the studio recording of that song too.
whats that natural hallow body in between that firebird and strat
What does this "phase inverter" switch actually do? I read it's a bass cutoff. Is this what phase inversion in guitars usually does- act like a highpass filter?
its the quackyquacky switch😂
@achickensandwich well i'm talking about seeing so actual basses soon! i'd love to see some rickenbacker basses again or maybe some jazz basses? idk anything like that.
I don't know what Guy Pierce was complaining about? I'm diggin the look of that git
right?
cool! this guy must be a great dude to hang out with haha
Whoa, Guy Pearce plays in a band!!?? Gonna have to do some Googlin' on this.
Great vid Phil.
@Digitbig its tuned like a four string bass with two higher strings, its pretty much a bass guitar
if the shorter scale length mattered that Mustang basses are not basses then too i guess huh?
Led Zeppelin &. Black Sabbath forever!!!
Thank you!
nah that's just phil, he's like that all the time, he's just happy :D
It already has a video. Search for Bonus Phil X 1973 (or 1976 can't remember) Les Paul Deluxe
Nice work Phil!
Joe Perry wrote & played Back In The Saddle on one so had hoped the X-Man would treat us to a few bars.
Burgundy mist kicks ass.
one thing, for all the fender bass vi's have they been round wound or flat wound?
Foxey Lady was INSANE.
Love that sabbath tone
I like the monkey as well. I currently have mine apart so I can do the bass mod, but you're making me rethink it. I like that it doesn't suck tone up even though it's not true bypass. Speaking of which what do you think of danelectro's transparent OD? Also why throw a digital sound in with all the analog action? Dang I have a ton of questions. Ever thought about doing pedal reviews?
ok but we have to use a bass amp or a guitar amp?
You can use both as long you dont overuse the guitar amp volume on full on the low octaves
Also the results between booth is diffrent but if mix it there comes a very uniquie sound
Oh my GOD!! This is CrAzY!!! °_°
@frettedamericana, Next time Phil demos another Fender VI, you should have him do every single combination of pickups & if possible can it be through a bass amp? because after all it is a bass :D please
2 questions. Can i plug in my bass into my guitar amp? And if i can, will it mess up my amp or bass in any way?
oh yeah what is this tuned to? most 6 string basses now are BEADGC but arent these different?
@TheCEAtv Of course since John Lennon played that bass guitar for the song.
This dude seriously needs to be playing/singing in a stadium band!
ShreadTheWeapon he's toured with loads of bands. he's been a session guitarist/backing vocalist for many huge bands over the last 25 years.
He's definitely up to the task.
sounds great. and unique.
I’d rock the color
I'd like to hear it through a bass amp as well. Might be worried about blowing up a guitar amp with one of these.
wich Riff or Song is it on 4:17
n.i.b. : Black Sabbath
@DDInDaHouse187 you can pick up a custom shop one on ebay for under 4k. i wish i had one too. schecter makes the hellcat 6 which can be used as a bass like this for under 700 bucks .
Josh Klinghoffer uses that on the song happiness loves company live
add a wah, a distortion pedal and a compressor.
u will sound like cliff
awesome flintstones reference
does it have special strings made for it?
Playing bass while singing is impossible for me. Great music lesson here. Forget the lyrics. Just have fun and go for it. I'll never progress if I'm afraid of messing up the lyrics and vocal timing.
Bass VI ... This is what happens when you leave Stratocasters and Jazz Basses at home alone without supervision. I wish I had one!!
badass guitar.......
And for live versions of I Miss You.
Also this one has the best tone out of the three he played.
