for all y'all curious about phil's energy... my favorite jam partner is a 73 year old cancer survivor - who you'd expect to be on a pacemaker and in a wheelchair.. but he can play all out from 5pm till 5am. absolutely rocking everything from del shannon to the eagles to playing background to my solo work. now, they never had a medical diagnosis when he was younger, but recently a doctor informed him he is ADHD. so i think it's that simple.. some people are wired different and just happen to put that energy towards something positive like music.. :)
Phil is a hoot - and he obviously takes his guitar playing very seriously. It is ironic that he is highlighting all these very expensive vintage guitars b/c he is a clear example that IT ISN'T THE GUITAR - its' the guitar player. I mean really how many players would take the time to learn that Hotel California guitar harmony solo in double-time! We all wish there was a drug that would give you this much energy and still allow us to maintain our focus and the quality of our performances - but there ain't. Energy and commitment like this comes from the inside - and from God. Keep it up Phil - you rock!

I really like this guy... He is very talented and a great personality. He did wonderfully in the epically (is this a word) big shoes of Richie Sambora.
The reason the Tele has a unique tone in the Bridge position opposed to say a Strat or other guitars with single coils, is because the bridge surrounds the bridge pickup, so a big bit of metal is surrounding the pickup, which gives it that tone. And yes, the string through the body does contribute to the tone but not as much as that bridge around the pickup. There you go phil
There were 17 edits in Hotel Califonia, the solo was constructed by producers in the studio from the many takes that Joe Walsh had recorded. They actually handed him a cassette telling him, "here's your solo for live gigs now go and learn it". A friend of mine attended an audio engineer's course, the teacher had worked as an engineer during the recording of Hotel California, he was there so he knew what had occurred.
Felix Burke I heard Don Felder (the other guitarist on that solo) say that he had recorded the whole solo and harmony part in a demo tape. he and Walsh recorded a different solo than the one on the demo tape for the record, but don Henley asked him to record the same solo as the one on the demo because he liked it better

hey Phil! some songs i like to play are Eddie Cochrane songs like something else, c'mon everybody, twenty flight rock, summertime blues and so on... those songs are strait up Rock & Roll in its pure (rockabilly circa 1957) form. they aren't so technical yet you can add some of your own touch to them. Covered by a wide range of rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, Stray Cats, the Who, bruce Springsteen, the Black Keys, Rush, Joan Jet, The Beach boys, Sex Pistols... and so on. 50/50 time with my pals playing drums and bass with me as a band or im alone in a small bar... . I think im gonna record them and upload them to youtube. But I was also suggesting those songs to you for your fretedamericana videos and what not. Cheers from the true north strong and free! :)

What do you get when you cross Riki Rachtman with Jerry Lee Lewis? Phil X! OWWWW! YAY-UH! Anyway, I'm not sure exactly what model of 'Telly Jimmy Page played on the recorded version of "Communication Breakdown," but that psychedelic-looking one he was known to play live back then was a '58 given to him as a gift from Jeff Beck when Jimmy got Jeff the gig with The Yardbirds. For the record (heh-heh, "record," pun intended), Jimmy played, mainly, two instruments on "Led Zeppelin." He alternated between a 'Telly for an electric. and a Gibson J-200 (the same guitar you hear John Lennon playing on "Norwegian Wood") for an acoustic. The only exception to this can be heard during "You Shook Me," where Jimmy plugged in a '58 Gibson Flying Vee that, in his words, "nearly split open my amp."
