Leo should have been nominated for Best Actor Oscar but since Blood Diamond came out, he had to choose. So his team decided to submit for Blood Diamond. But he gets to be the lead of a Best Picture Oscar movie...again.
Great reaction to this masterpiece. Jack Nicholson is notorious for going off script and making the scene, himself, and the actors around him better in the process. During the "I smell a rat" scene with Leo, Jack went way off script. In an interview, Leo talks about that scene. Leo mentions he was no longer acting because Nicholson was scaring him for real.

This might be the 1st DVD I ever bought, probably was the 1st Steelbook for sure. I remember being shocked by all the gruesome headshots. I hear Infernal Affairs the Hong Kong movie this is a remake of is just as good if not better. I have it but have never gotten around to watching it after all these years.
As a cinephile who has seen over 5,000 films (and rated every single one of them on IMDB) Departed is easily in the top 5% of films. The last 5 minutes is what allowed it to rise above most crime films.
The original Infernal Affairs has a better ending. The American remake is almost shot-for-shot identical... but then the US version tacks on Marky Mark showing up at the end to kill Matt Damon's character which kind of ruins the point of the whole movie...
_Cinephile_ is just a euphemism for someone who sits on the couch all day watching movies and eating Cheetos. Like a janitor would call himself a _Sanitation Engineer._
Jen, and now my usual comment: Do yourself a favour and what "Infernal Affairs", the original from what "The Departed" is a remake, too. It's a early 2000s Hong Kong movie, and as good if not better that the Scorsese version. And even if you already know the basic story, due to completely different film style and cultural differences, it's still well worth the watch.
An absolutely amazing movie. The story is so well written, but it is the performances that are simply stunning. There’s also a big clue running through the movie, for when you watch it again. There’s an “X” that appears in front of or behind every character that will die.
One of the best movies that you've ever reacted to so far Jen. I've seen this quite a few times and it never gets old, the cast is perfect and the performances are stellar, especially Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Love watching you go on the ride for this one. The tension of two characters trying to live secret lives AND smoke one another out is just relentless. Scorsese and DiCaprio make one hell of a team; you'd really enjoy their collaboration on "Shutter Island," which is a spooky and mysterious thriller with amazing locations, photography, and performances all around.
I hold that Scorsese's best movie - in a long line of superior films - is "Goodfellas." Yes, "The Departed" is excellent, but there are two other, even better Scorsese movies, both starring Robert De Niro: "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull." Both are utterly unforgettable, with transcendent performances by De Niro. "Taxi Driver," especially, is the movie that made De Niro De Niro. Nice commentary by you on this particular movie, and you almost completed an interesting thought I hadn't considered: Leo plays a good guy who has to act bad, Matt plays a bad guy who has to act good, and Nicholson...well, he's a bad guy who is allowed to act bad in the name of doing good. Supposedly. It's fascinating how the allegiances of good and evil are played against each other. Also fascinating: the Jack Nicholson character is based on a real-life criminal who was indeed a real-life FBI informant. The FBI literally let that man get away with murder because he was an informant.
Jen, you're so smart. I think you understood everything of importance. It took me multiple viewings to understand all the bits of this film. I've seen a lot of reactions to this and no one has followed the story better than you just did. 🧠🤩👍
As someone with a military and private security background, i really respect that line "I'm the guy who does his fucking job. You must be the other guy." Very Boston.
One of my favorites as well. When this was in theaters I saw it several times, I would close my eyes at the elevator scene just to hear the audience reaction.
Once again people....I'm back for the very BEST reaction channel there is! Its been awhile, but my loyalty is still strong and I'll be here for every reaction! Missed you Jen, it's really good to be back...Eric 😊
Welcome Back, Eric...and Boy, do You have a whole LOT to catch up on! You have certainly been Missed, even Shree was asking about You, just the other day!
The letter X is used throughout the film to foreshadow those that die within the film (marked for death) Howard hawks film “scarface” was used as the reference.
The Departed is a remake of a Hong Kong crime movie Infernal Affairs from 2002, and it brought Martin Scorsese his first Academy Award. Plese react to more of Scorsese's films--you'll be rewarded and begin to recognize his motifs, like the use of popular music on the soundtrack as well as the excessive profanity and violence. Scorsese has had a tremendous influence on modern cinema. Great reaction Jen--always nice to see you.
40:16 I've come to enjoy your reactions because your mind is always trying to figure out what's going to happen next and you do a great job of letting the audience in on your inner thoughts...as soon as Leo got shot...you could almost hear your brain just factory reset for the rest of the elevator/everyone getting killed scene!!! It was amazing! This movie is brilliant and comes close to perfection!!! Great reaction as always Jenny Stack on Stacks!
I actually think Matt Damon is an underrated actor. Like you said, he's a villain, yet totally watchable...in a subtle way. If that makes sense. BTW, his peformance in Stillwater might be my favorite of his.
Two straight days of Jen? Fantastic! Two movies I don't think I recommended to you yet, Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice. I think you would love some classic noir, and these make a great introduction. Love your channel.
Dicaprio is a great actor, in this movie he gave a great performance, there are strong scenes that are currently controversial, I hope you continue making more videos reactions to great Leonardo DiCaprio movies 😊✨
Jack Nicholson’s character is partially based on a real life Boston mobster, Whitey Bulger, who in exchange with being a protected FBI informant by leading to the downfalls of rival gangs, was able to be ignored of all criminal activities such as murder and racketeering for a decade and a half. His FBI handler ensured his activities were ignored by the department until 1995 when he was indicted. Bulger fled and by the mid-2000s was the second-most wanted person on the FBI list (only behind Bin Laden). He was eventually captured and arrested, and died in prison. There is a great film about him called Black Mass (2015) starring Johnny Depp that’s really good, if you’re interested in the story.
and Robert Mueller held exculpatory evidence and kept 4 men in prison for murder to protect bulger the fbi later settled a 100 million dollar lawsuit with the victims families
Yeah I almost got whiplash at the elevator scene my first time through. Lol This is one of those movies like Ford v Ferrari where the rest of the movie is so good that the ending still sneaks up every time. If you want to watch more X-Men without all the baggage, I'd suggest X2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Logan. Great job, looking great ☺️
This movie inadvertently is a big reason why I have a tattoo. Long story short I saw this movie in theatres and fell in love with the adropkick Murphys track. Turns out they had a gig in my town the next week, went and saw them live, and became a fan for life. Fast forward to 2010 on the spur of the moment I decide on getting one of their ep covers tattooed on my chest.
This was one of my faves when it first came out. A friend of mines wife is from Taiwan , she turned me on to the original movie Internal Affairs , made in Hong Kong . Scorsese got some excellent performances from a stellar cast . Costello was loosely based on Boston mobster Whitey Bolger , a vicious killer and FBI informant . Also , what did you think of The Dropkick Murphys ? Their song I'm Shipping up to Boston ?
'The Departed' finally did it for me: previously I saw Leo as this "Titanic-pretty-boy". Talented for sure, but kinda too boyish. As Billy Costigan however, I saw an extremely fierce, desperate and and very brave character and Leo made this believable all the way down.
Ha, the first time I watched this movie, I was so confused, but mainly because for the first 15 minutes, I didn’t realise that Matt Damon and Leo were different people. They looked so similar and I just was not following it at all. Then it clicked that they were different characters / actors, but I was already lost because I had it set in my mind that they were the same.
Hi Jen!🙂They shot some of the warehouse scenes down the street from my family home in the old Quincy Shipyard. The Massachusetts State Troopers were really known for being corrupt. This is a pretty awesome film! Yeah, it holds up really well for repeat viewing, Jen. Great reactions to your very first viewing of this modern classic!!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Freakin amazing movie with an aweeome cast. The twist is one of the best one's I've seen, incredible. Also yes, the Wolverine movies are very good. Gene Hackman is virtually The Wolverine at this point.
I saw it in theaters. The scene where the camera cut to the falling body of Martin Sheen made the entire theater gasp. The elevator scene was just people being like ‘wtf, did you see that?!’
Hi Jen, as always, a share pleasure watching you enjoy another excellent movie. It’s been great watching your journey not only as a content provider but a movie buff. 🎉
This is one my all time favorite Martin Scorsese films. My favorite part in the movie is the end when Mark Wahlberg shoots Matt Damon and the little rat crawling around. Mark killed the rat lol
@@deluxereissue Yeah I would say the same, he was average imo; whole movie was on the serious side while nicholson was acting funny and cartoonish which simply didn't fit. I've watched lot of Nicholson movies and in my opinion he was way better when he was young, then later he just start to play every role in similar way without creating really distinct characters
I´m so glad you were so focused on the story and not specifically on the violence :) Some random and unsolicited recommendations for Matty D: The Rainmaker, Rounders and of course Good Will Hunting, which you may have already watched off channel. For Scorsese: The Age of Innocence, Cape Fear and the very underrated Bringing Out the Dead. For Leo: What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Revolutionary Road and The Aviator.
My favourite Scorsese movie. Absolutely love Jack in this. He took this part because he been doing lots of comedies before and he wanted to do something that was pure evil. He improved a lot. Costello is actually based on real life gangster Whitey Bulger. He was played by Johnny Depp in the movie Black Mass, I think you gotta check that out too. It’s also a remake of a Hong Kong movie called Infernal Affairs, though this is one of those cases that the remake is better than the original. But you should check those movies out (there’s three of them). A great reaction. And if I might add, looking amazing as always.
Growing up, I noticed that there was the expensive actors and their economy alternatives. You know, there was Jack Lemmon and his alternative, Tony Randall. There was Walter Matthau in the movies and his substitute Jack Klugman on TV. In this movie we have the same dynamic at play. The star Matt Damon is here while in a smaller role is the ersatz Mark Wahlberg. - Apologies to Mark, he is a likable actor in his own right, check him out in the movie he made after this, 'Shooter' or in 'Deepwater Horizon'.
I don't normally do movie recommendations because so many do, but if you want another film where Jack Nicholson dominates, you can't do better than As Good as it Gets. And if you want another film in the same genre with an amazing cast with all the twists and turns of this one, then look no further than LA Confidential. this was another really fun reaction though...as usual.
Such a brilliant film, and I expect many shocked looks behind Jen's Serious Girl Spectacles on this one. 🤓😮😱 The weird thing is that in a movie with Martin Sheen, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and The Great Jack Nicholson, my favourite performance is from Mark Wahlberg.
Outstanding movie! I gotta recommend the original movie this film was based on....the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs. Def worth watching both versions as they are both excellent!
You should definitely check out “The Irishman”. Considered (sort of) a trilogy of mob movies made by Scorsese, Deniro, and Pesci. Pesci came out of retirement to make the film.
Thanks for another great reaction! I highly recommend checking out The Aviator: Scorcese, DiCaprio, and Blanchett. Phenomenal acting and a fantastic movie.
Hi Jen. Great reaction as always! 😊👍 I know, that this suggestion is way off the movie reaction universe, but if you like reading books, you should definitely check out "No Angel" by Jay Dobyns. It´s the biography of Jay Dobyns, who worked as an undercover ATF-agent infiltrating Hells Angels for several years. 💯

41:18 a dog 🐕 (😂 warm her up for what's about to happen!)
41:21 any moment someone like he could just get shot in the head now too 👍
41:26 someone's gonna kill him
41:28 😮 Oh frig
41:35 alright. Well. He was wearing those freaking booties. I knew he was gonna do some murdering.
41:41 oh the rat 🐀. Shoo. Wow. Crime does not pay.
❤❤❤ One of your best reactions ever no doubt.
Thanks! ☺️👍
I love that this movie is just one long metaphor for fatherhood.
"Crime does not pay," - Jen M.
Departed is a remake of Infernal Affairs (2002)a Hong Kong movie directed by Andrew Law and Alan Mak
Winner of 4 Oscars including Best Picture! The twists and turns throughout this movie just keep on coming!
Fantastic Movie 🎥❣️
As a cinephile who has seen over 5,000 films (and rated every single one of them on IMDB) Departed is easily in the top 5% of films. The last 5 minutes is what allowed it to rise above most crime films.
The original Infernal Affairs has a better ending. The American remake is almost shot-for-shot identical... but then the US version tacks on Marky Mark showing up at the end to kill Matt Damon's character which kind of ruins the point of the whole movie...
Any obscure recommendations?

Congratulations 😂
_Cinephile_ is just a euphemism for someone who sits on the couch all day watching movies and eating Cheetos. Like a janitor would call himself a _Sanitation Engineer._
Jack gives an amazing performance.
@@deluxereissuebut the dialect is really confusinh
Jen, and now my usual comment: Do yourself a favour and what "Infernal Affairs", the original from what "The Departed" is a remake, too. It's a early 2000s Hong Kong movie, and as good if not better that the Scorsese version. And even if you already know the basic story, due to completely different film style and cultural differences, it's still well worth the watch.
Such a roller coaster ride for a movie! There's never any downtime, its just balls to the wall the whole time. Great movie!
I really love this one. My personal fav Leo performance
"I don't wanna be a product of my enviyoment... I want my enviyoment to be a product of me!"
Such an awesome movie. Phenomenal performances, a great script and a master director at the wheel.
🧠🤩👍
Jack Nicholson's character is based on Whitney Bulger. He was a gangster in Boston and he was a FBI informant.
As someone with a military and private security background, i really respect that line "I'm the guy who does his fucking job. You must be the other guy." Very Boston.
When the elevator doors opened I went numb! 😢 Best action movie ever.
I always love Scorsese’s choice of songs.
Oh you mean Gimme Shelter? All nine times?😂
I, too, love The Rolling Stones 😂
@@deluxereissueto effect the film
One of my favorites as well. When this was in theaters I saw it several times, I would close my eyes at the elevator scene just to hear the audience reaction.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the film, Jen! It's one of the few that still shocks the hell outta people. Take care! ☘️
20:55 who even is this girl really?
@@merriammerkabah408 Evidently, they cut her in on the film. Haha!
Simplord llolloll
The letter X is used throughout the film to foreshadow those that die within the film (marked for death) Howard hawks film “scarface” was used as the reference.
Lol, meanwhile everyone in the movies dies. He coulda just put an X across the screen for every scene that Dignam's not in.
I actually like Infernal Affairs much better than The Departed because in Infernal Affairs, the bad cop actually got away with it.
"Are there more Scorsese movies I should check out?" Ha ha...that was funny. Seriously though, great job!
Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon and of course Jack Nicholson killed it! It is a excellent movie and all three gave stand out performances.
@@mast3rNate That is a classic movie!
The Departed is a fantastic movie. One of my Top 5 of all time for sure.
Dicaprio is a great actor, in this movie he gave a great performance, there are strong scenes that are currently controversial, I hope you continue making more videos reactions to great Leonardo DiCaprio movies 😊✨
This is my fav Leo role so far!
@@jenmurrayxo You gotta watch Blood Diamond. So underrated.
Died in prison....🤣
and Robert Mueller held exculpatory evidence and kept 4 men in prison for murder to protect bulger
the fbi later settled a 100 million dollar lawsuit with the victims families
Yeah I almost got whiplash at the elevator scene my first time through. Lol This is one of those movies like Ford v Ferrari where the rest of the movie is so good that the ending still sneaks up every time.
If you want to watch more X-Men without all the baggage, I'd suggest X2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Logan.
Great job, looking great ☺️
In my top 5 favorite movies of all time. Awesome reaction as well Jen.
How Leo didn't win the Oscar for this is baffling. Even with such an amazing cast his performance stands out. That slow decline is great.😊
Thanks, jen . I love the frued line about the Irish. ( therapy)
Top 20 flick for sure. One of DiCaprio’s best.
"Sucks for that guy, but it's not Leo." 😂
The name of the original is actually "Infernal affairs" with the f often mistaken for a t - a play on words, easy to miss!
I grew up with a John Bolger so I make that mistake often .@@e.jamesshepard7183
Love that movie, was the one that made me explore asian movies
"Is this based on a book or something?"
It's a remake of a Hong Kong movie called Infernal Affairs.
Having just watched Jen's uh watch of Training Day, I just had to see her opinion of The Departed after she told me it was on her channel 👏 🌟 😊.
'The Departed' finally did it for me: previously I saw Leo as this "Titanic-pretty-boy". Talented for sure, but kinda too boyish. As Billy Costigan however, I saw an extremely fierce, desperate and and very brave character and Leo made this believable all the way down.
This is my fav Leo performance for sure
Leo is mature because of the movie
The actor that plays Fitzy is the guy that played Crazy Stephan in Brave Heart. He was the "My Island!" Irish guy (trying not to spoil).
I'm thrilled Jen finally got to see The Depahted!
Surprise...was Not expecting this to Upload today! 💝👍
"Hell Yes" I'm Voting for More X-Men Movies; let's give Jen what She wants already...👍
definite "yes" vote for the watching more x-men movies!
Jen coming through with another banger! Let’s go!
Great reactions to your very first viewing of this modern classic!!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
martin sheen's accent is hilarious.
“Burn after reading “ is another Coen Bros. classic you need to check out
Freakin amazing movie with an aweeome cast.
Yes indeed Robert. I agree.
One of the best fade-to-credits soundtracks of all time!
this movie is high up in my top list together with the enemy of the state (Will Smith) and The negotiator (Samual L Jackson)
Absolutely Amazing Movie Legendary Cast, Everyone Performance Is Great Especially Leonardo DiCaprio And Jack Nicholson 🙏❣️😀💯
This is one my all time favorite Martin Scorsese films. My favorite part in the movie is the end when Mark Wahlberg shoots Matt Damon and the little rat crawling around. Mark killed the rat lol
Yes!! Brilliant movie! Great reaction 👍💚
EIGHT watches. It takes 8 good watch-throughs. and it just gets bettah every time.
Great reaction to one of my favorite movies!
You cannot go wrong with Nicholson in the film.
Can you ever go wrong with Nicholson?? All you have to do is give that man a good script and watch him go:
@@deluxereissue Yeah I would say the same, he was average imo; whole movie was on the serious side while nicholson was acting funny and cartoonish which simply didn't fit. I've watched lot of Nicholson movies and in my opinion he was way better when he was young, then later he just start to play every role in similar way without creating really distinct characters
Awesome movie and a great reaction Jen. And yes, some more X-Men would be great.
Legendary Movie that I finally got to watch
way way too late ......
I´m so glad you were so focused on the story and not specifically on the violence :)
Some random and unsolicited recommendations for Matty D: The Rainmaker, Rounders and of course Good Will Hunting, which you may have already watched off channel.
For Scorsese: The Age of Innocence, Cape Fear and the very underrated Bringing Out the Dead.
For Leo: What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Revolutionary Road and The Aviator.
“Don’t laugh!! This ain’t reality tv!”
Well, I love the original HK's version ,more.....
thanks for the most important parts... I can't watch the whole thing all the way through, this was great!
loved the reaction! the story is truly compelling and the suspense is agonizing. my heart felt like it was in my throat! 😅
Imma sure you will be watching the movie again and again 😉great reaction per usual
Another good Scorsese to check out with Leo and Daniel Day-Lewis is Gangs of New York
Jen flashed a couple of stacks 😂
I don't normally do movie recommendations because so many do, but if you want another film where Jack Nicholson dominates, you can't do better than As Good as it Gets. And if you want another film in the same genre with an amazing cast with all the twists and turns of this one, then look no further than LA Confidential.
this was another really fun reaction though...as usual.
Maybe the best cast ever assembled.
Incredible film. My favorite Scorsese movie is Bringing Out the Dead.
Underrated and forgotten compared to other Scorsese films.
Scorsese favourite film is DEEP RISING and BMX BANDITS
Amazing performances from everyone in Bringing Out The Dead. RIP to Major Tom.
Such a brilliant film, and I expect many shocked looks behind Jen's Serious Girl Spectacles on this one. 🤓😮😱
The weird thing is that in a movie with Martin Sheen, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and The Great Jack Nicholson, my favourite performance is from Mark Wahlberg.
As far as Scorsese movies, I would recommend Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. Both have incredible acting performances by Robert Deniro.
5:37 Another great element of this movie is the excellent soundtrack, especially "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" by Dropkick Murphys. 🤘
Thanks for another great reaction! I highly recommend checking out The Aviator: Scorcese, DiCaprio, and Blanchett. Phenomenal acting and a fantastic movie.
Hi Jen.
Great reaction as always! 😊👍
I know, that this suggestion is way off the movie reaction universe, but if you like reading books, you should definitely check out "No Angel" by Jay Dobyns. It´s the biography of Jay Dobyns, who worked as an undercover ATF-agent infiltrating Hells Angels for several years. 💯
Great cast of actors. Interesting video. Thanks 😊 🫂 🙏 😊
Another Matt Damon movie for the list
