It’s foreshadowing him before he appears Some other hints about Tyler’s true nature: •There’s a promotional video on a hotel tv with a group of hotel employees saying welcome. The one in the middle is Tyler. •When Lou first punches Tyler, you can see Jack lower his head as if he felt it •When Jack beats himself, he says he was reminded of his first fight with Tyler. •And when they crash and the car is flipped upside down, Tyler comes out of the passenger side and pulls Jack out of the driver side
The first two rules of Fight Club is brilliant, because it explicitly tells people who have seen the movie not to spoil the big twist by telling people about Fight Club. It was a viral movie meme that served a real purpose, and worked like a charm. There was a similar (but far less iconic) line in the Matrix, also a 1999 movie, "no one can tell you what the Matrix is, you have to see if for yourself"
It also has a purpose in the movie, which is telling the members to break the rules. The only way Fight Club gains members is by breaking the first two rules, and Tyler WANTS more members. He wants people who break the rules.
OMG nothing beats watching someone react to the big reveal of this movie. And you're absolutely right that you'll love watching it again to notice the bread crumbs that were missed this time. Favourite part of your reaction was the perfect drop of the Pixies song which made so many people fall in love with them around that time and to this day I picture that scene when the song plays. Great reaction as always ✌️
Agreed, there are so few of them that catch on to the reveal until it's explicitly pointed out. Even though, at least on rewatching, there are more than enough hints about what's going on. My wife ruined it when I made her watch the movie and told me that people with that kind of multiple personalities are never aware of the secondary personalities and go through the "switch" that was brought up every time. So, the movie doesn't really work in a real life sense because narrator would never be able to interact with Tyler Durden and would instead feel like his life was being attacked by Tyler Durden, even though they are the same person.
The writing in this is so layered and clever (mostly thanks to Chuck Palahniuk, I think I spelled that right.) The part where Ed Norton's character says "I knew the story before he told me." Has two meanings, one being that he could guess what happened knowing both Tyler and Marla and two being that he literally experienced it as Tyler so knew the story first hand.
It's right at the beginning too. "I know this, because Tyler knows this" is one of the most blatant foreshadowing lines and the reveal can still drop like a bomb.
A masterpiece, a film that should be watched at the age of 20, 30, 40, 50. Every time it's the same movie but it tells you a different story. I know a few similar movies, but not many. Greetings from Finland.
One of the best movies ever made. Side note: The Pixies, who perform the song, Where Is My Mind, it's one of those few bands that can fit in any of the last four decades.
"Tomorrow will be the most beautiful day of Raymond K. Hessel's life. His breakfast will taste better than any meal you or I will ever eat." I gotta say, there was a certain beauty in that. Psychotic, but beautiful. Frequently people just drift through life, but those who have had a brush with death often find a new sense of drive and purpose because they appreciate the frailty and finite limit of our existence.
The OST is brilliant, Dust Brothers Also, beautiful thing about this film (or tragic) is that he finds the solution right in the beginning; it was to share and cry, he felt perfect afterwards - however, he fixated on the social-club aspect of the emotional release, for then to dump all of his weird baggage into the design of his own club. (Fans of the movie tend to use "Jack" for the main character _I am Jack's medulla oblongata_ etc.)
0:37 Wait... you haven't seen Inception? Yes, it's a must-watch. Christopher Nolan film from 2010. Great acting, great music, great cinematography. Right up your alley.
@@aTofuJunkie Its probably true for every corner of art, since a portion of it is specifically designed with the masses in mind, instead of people who are passionate about the medium. 12 monkeys is another one that makes you want to watch it again right after viewing. I literally walked out of the theater and bought a ticket for the next showing. Amazing. Highly underrated.
This was the movie that made me realize Brad Pitt was more interesting than his early roles implied. He became a star doing somewhat formulaic pretty-boy roles, then once he had some fame he started doing movies like this and 12 Monkeys.
An interesting thing about Marla's line "you're the worst thing that ever happened to me" a lot of people miss is that in a weird way, it's also a compliment. Marla as a character is obsessed with terrible things happening, with death, with pain and suffering etc. So for her to say that something was the worst thing she ever experienced is actually a plus for her, not a negative.
Tyler was a figment of the narrator's psychosis. The psychosis was induced by sleep-deprivation (his insomnia). When the narrator crashed the car, he was knocked out, which caused hime to sleep. When he woke up, Tyler was "gone" (really, the narrator was just refreshed and clear-headed). Then, he started traveling the country looking for Tyler (and not sleeping); Tyler reappeared.
1999 is my favorite movie year. It was stacked with so many great movies. "Fight Club" is only the tip of the iceberg. "Being John Malkovich," "Toy Story 2," "Rosetta," "American Beauty," "Election," "The Blair Witch Project," "Eye Wide Shut," "The Straight Story." The list goes on. I highly recommend a deep dive into 1999's best.
Two things always bothered me about this. 1) Security would be present in those buildings, even if nobody else was. 2) All financial institutions have off site backups. The only way this works is if the security were willing to take the fall, and they knew where all the backups were and destroyed them. The book is good, but even Chuck said he thought the movie is better than the book. I HIGHLY recommend reading either Survivor, or Invisible Monsters. His first three books are rough around the edges, but the ideas are just …. Unheard of. Those books are singularly unique.
Great reaction, loved how you met the twist! I really enjoy The Pixies as well and had listened to them quite a bit before seeing this movie but I can't hear 'Where Is My Mind?' without immediately thinking of our Narrator and Marla.
Miss Jen, as always, nobody does it better. Best wit, quips, and commentary. Such a fantastic professional and bring so much joy and happiness for people to forget hard times and people being ugly to others. We old, old folks appreciate you. Such a great mix of beauty and intellectual understanding of film, both serious and fun. We have a watch party for every new release. Thanks for all the hard work.
It's tough figuring out the etiquette for book spoilers that don't apply to the movie adaptation. There are two moments exclusively in the book that were memorably hilarious, and I just don't want to spoil them for anyone. But they're definitely Durden-y.
@@LordVolkov "The unreal is more powerful than the real. Because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. Because its only intangible ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies that last. Stone crumbles. Wood rots. People, well, they die. But things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on. If you can change the way people think. The way they see themselves. The way they see the world. You can change the way people live their lives. That's the only lasting thing you can create." Chuck P
3:47 I read the book and to me the first two thirds of them are like 95% the same except for a few paragraphs of info. The last third of the book however diverges greatly from the movie and even chuck lhas said the movie ending was better. I found it rather interesting to read an alternative to what I've seen so many times.🎉
4:29 The woman on you're right, Leader - Partners in Positivity aka Terri in this movie (played by Christina Cabot), was also in The Incredible Hulk as Thaddeus Ross's right-hand woman.
This movie really messes with your mind: we know that Jack (otherwise known as 'The Narrator') has mental health issues, but that all pales in comparison to the big reveal, giving this movie an epic plot twist. BTW, thanks for leaving in "Slide" (both versions) it's a good insight into Jack's mental state, and makes for a good ending when you realise Marla's not the bad guy/girl here.
If I could relive my whole life again, I might be most excited to re-experience this twist. When you're blindsided by it, it's earth-shatteringly good. So great to experience it vicariously through your reaction! Loved it!
Huge fan of Chuck Palahnuik. He is definitely an intense writer and he has such a twisted dark sense of humor but that’s what I love about his style. This film is iconic and i remember seeing it in the theater when it was released. I feel like David Fincher is really the only one who could’ve pulled off this movie. Fincher is known for his crime thrillers like Se7en also starring Brad Pitt as well as Morgan Freeman. He also directed Zodiac, another crime thriller, a movie based on the real life Zodiac murders. Which in my opinion is one of his top best films and I highly recommend you react to it.
Ms. Murray, your reactions are a joy. Intelligent and entertaining! This is one of my all time favorite films, thank you for covering it. Completely fascinating, but an occasionally difficult watch. I am Michael’s sincerest appreciation 😉
I'm sure others will by now have pointed out in great detail all of the little hints that we get throughout the movie of what's going on, that almost all of us (me included) don't put together until the big reveal. Yes, you'll want to watch it again, as so many things you see or hear take on an entirely new meaning when you know (ex: when beating himself up in his boss' office, he comments that for "some reason" it reminds him of his first fight with Tyler). Such a well-done movie. And yes, you definitely want to watch 12 Monkeys. It's another mind-twist, with one of Brad Pitt's best performances. Many people think he got snubbed at the Oscars on that one. For a completely different viewing experience, yes, you'll want to watch Forrest Gump.
Any good cult leader has some serious truths that followers can agree with but graphed in some total craziness that gives them all the power, Tyler was great at it! Watched this like three weeks in a row in the theater 😂
Did you notice that when Jack called Tyler after his apartment exploded, and there is no answer but Tyler immediately calls him back, you can briefly see a note pinned to the phone that says "no incoming calls"? In other words, he imagined the entire phone call.
Of course Jen would love this amazing movie!!! Definitely watch it multiple times, because there is always something to catch each time you watch it... Also there are a ton of video essays on YT, and some of them are mond blowing! One of them was about how not only was Tyler just a figment of his imagination, but so was Bob, Marla, and all of Project Mayhem! Boom! Mind blown!
@@jenmurrayxo I don't really love the idea of Project Mayhem being all in his head, but the scene where "Jack" is in the bar trying to figure out where Tyler is, the bartender with his head in the halo appears out of nowhere, which only makes sense if he's a figment of his imagination...
@41:42 Jen, the only film I can think of that's "similar" would be 'Christie Malry's Own Double-Entry' although I haven't seen it since it was on at the cinema the year after 'Fight Club'. Needless to say; it didn't take off in the same way.
Yes, you should watch Forrest Gump. It's one of the best movies ever made! 12 Monkeys is great too, so I highly recommend that you watch it as well. "Fight Club" is one of my favorite movies of all time, so I'm glad you like it. Other movies like it? Well, another trippy and deeply philosophical movie that I love is "Donnie Darko". Another trippy, mind-bending movie that will blow your mind is "Memento". You should do both!
Memento is a must watch but Donnie Darko is more style over substance. Its the kind of movie you need a big explanation for it to make sense. Great visuals and soundtrack though.
Great reaction, Jen. 👍🙂Your confusion at the end is how we all felt when we learned the true identity of Tyler. 😲Another movie with unexpected "reveals" is Dr. Strangelove. 👍Despite the weird name, it's the best satire that has ever been filmed. I'm pretty sure you would love it.
Tyler never throws the first punch, the closest thing he does to starting a fight is the guy thst was investigating project mayhem and thst guy did start the investigation
A story is when you use lies to convey truths. An anti-story (TM Stephen Monteith) is when you use truths to convey lies. Tyler Durden is a master of telling anti-stories.
The best part of the reveal is, if you remember his fight with himself in his boss' office, he says "At that moment, I was reminded of my first fight with Tyler." Me and my brother had to watch this 3 TIMES in a row when we first saw it way back when to catch all the hints, the little one-scene blips of Brad Pitt cut into the movie. It's a masterpiece.
Fight Club is one of the best movie to see people react to. The reveal is always money and seeing mind being blown while watching it is a freaking payoff. 100% the movie i'd like to watch for the first time again.
8:19 No, it's not a recipe for Napalm. Apparently Chuck Palahniuk researched it, but the publishers altered the recipe during editing (for obvious liability reasons)...
Another great reaction! Your channel is quickly becoming one of my very favorite react channels. And the giant frowny face when you saw the sticker about recycling animals cracked me up. 🤣🤣 I was 100% sure I would never be interested in watching this movie, so I watched a reaction to it a while ago because I didn't care about spoilers. And then it turned out to be so much more interesting than the title suggested to me and I ended up being sad that I spoiled it for myself. I did still enjoy it when I watched the full movie though. Oh. And to answer your questions, yes, you should absolutely watch both "12 Monkeys" and "Forrest Gump." Both are definitely worth watching. Also, another movie with Edward Norton (the narrator of "Fight Club") is "Rounders", which stars Matt Damon, and was way more interesting than I expected it to be when I originally saw a synopsis.
You are the only reactor to this movie who didn't figure out the massive spoiler early. It took you by surprise at the programmed time, just like it did for me. You are now more relatable.
I think it's ruined for a lot of people these days because it was one of the first movies to have a plot like this, but a few things since have copied it, so it's not a completely wild idea as it first was. But yeah Jen's timing figuring it out was perfect.
@@hellomark1Yeah, happens a lot with reactions to movies that were original when they came out, but have been copied endlessly in the decades since. Always bums me out to see a reactor figure out a major plot twist by saying, “Oh, this is just like…”
Another movie that has similar themes of something happening underneath it all is the Michael Douglas movie called The Game (1997). It used to be my favorite movie for a long time.
Fincher delivers the dark nasty goods with superlative performances by Norton & Pitt making an effective modernd day Jekyll/Hyde - I'd add AMERICAN PSYCHO for a double feature (if you haven't seen that Jen - I can not recall - please do see it; and yes you need to see GUMP!)
35:10 The fact that Jen wants re-watch this movie before it's even over is yet another reason that she's so awesome. It really is a different film the second time. 38:57 And she knows The Pixies, I mean, c'mon...😍🤘
My pet Fight Club theory. It's a story about a man coming to grips with his death. Norton is the guy, Marla is the tumor and Pitt is the portion of the guy that wants to live and deny that he has a terminal illness. His insomnia is his preoccupation with his impending death. The fight club is his desire to hurt the world, to hurt the people that aren't riddled with cancer.
Absolutely love your reaction to this movie. It always kinda bums me out when people sit and deconstruct the movie until they figure it out before the twist. Ugh. But I love when people like yourself go along for the ride with “The Narrator” until the twist and then you can see how much their mind is blown. Beautiful. 😆
One of the best twists in cinema. And every time you watch it you'll pick up little details you've never seen before. And yes, Forest Gump is a must watch. It was ground breaking in the way it was made and the story and acting are incredible.
Predestination is a bit of a shocking movie that really made me think about it off and on for months afterwards. I also enthusiastically endorse Twelve Monkeys and Inception.
A great movie, though probably the most misinterpreted film of my generation. To answer some questions, no, David Fincher did not direct Inception, that was Christopher Nolan and yes, you should see it. Fincher did direct Se7en though, grungy is a good description of that and Fight Club. Yes, watch Forrest Gump, bring your US history book and some tissues. The main character is named Tyler Durden, though he’s also known simply as The Narrator and Jack, since he uses the name in his quotes about himself a few times (I am Jack’s broken heart/complete lack of surprise, etc.). Enjoy your second watch, so many things make so much more sense seeing it again. You even picked up on the strange blips early on, pause it when you go through to see what they show.

Thanks Clifton! So glad you enjoy ☺️👍
Love the reaction to Tyler clapping your eyeballs at the end. Priceless 😂😂😂
It's tough figuring out the etiquette for book spoilers that don't apply to the movie adaptation. There are two moments exclusively in the book that were memorably hilarious, and I just don't want to spoil them for anyone. But they're definitely Durden-y.
Chuck is a Genius.
The book was a very interesting read for me after watching the movie first, but I really enjoyed it.
That's the only lasting thing you can create."
Chuck P
The penguin says "Slide."
Marla says "It's a lie."
I think this is my favorite reaction on all of RUclips Jen!! love your channel
Thank you!! ☺️👍
33:36 is what it's all about. That mind blown moment. Truly epic.
3:47 I read the book and to me the first two thirds of them are like 95% the same except for a few paragraphs of info. The last third of the book however diverges greatly from the movie and even chuck lhas said the movie ending was better. I found it rather interesting to read an alternative to what I've seen so many times.🎉
"Is he just kicking his own ass?"
You have seen Liar Liar right?
I was thinking that same thing..!
39:15 fun fact: they actually layered brad pitt and Edward nortons voice, like he was finally in control of both parts of himself
So cool 👍
Thank you for being you, Jen! Your reactions are so real and so entertaining! I'm a fan.
“Was that a happy ending??!” LOL
This in my top 10 movies of my lifetime so far.
Soooo great 👍👍
This movie was bonkers and one strange trip 😵💫and the reveal 🤯 . reaction A++++++ as always 🔥
Ms. Murray, your reactions are a joy. Intelligent and entertaining! This is one of my all time favorite films, thank you for covering it. Completely fascinating, but an occasionally difficult watch. I am Michael’s sincerest appreciation 😉
@39:19 "and a penis"😂😂.. David Fincher's one last troll on the audience before credits roll.. 😂😂 love it..
We don't talk about Fight Club!
🤫
Ruke #2: Don't talk about Fight Club
I love your sense humour Jen. Your wacky antics have earned yourself another sub...
Yes Forrest Gump is a must see.
Any good cult leader has some serious truths that followers can agree with but graphed in some total craziness that gives them all the power, Tyler was great at it! Watched this like three weeks in a row in the theater 😂
The way he weaves serious anti-conformist philosophy into his cult BS is masterful.
Fun Fact: that "pool" short story, that went on to be in "Haunted", was first published in Playboy Magazine.
8:42 It's exactly this kind of brilliant and accurate commentary that makes me love Jen and her Serious Girl Spectacles so much. 🤣👍✌❤
Thanks Bob! 😂👍
Boom! Mind blown!
I can't wait to hear all the theories & watch it again!! 🤯🤯
@@jenmurrayxo I don't really love the idea of Project Mayhem being all in his head, but the scene where "Jack" is in the bar trying to figure out where Tyler is, the bartender with his head in the halo appears out of nowhere, which only makes sense if he's a figment of his imagination...
Always forget what a good film this is👌🏽well done Jen, great reaction❤️
Christopher Nolan did Inception.
One of the best movies ever made. Top 10 for me, maybe top 5 along with Arrival and Jojo Rabbit, Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.
The best part of the reveal is, if you remember his fight with himself in his boss' office, he says "At that moment, I was reminded of my first fight with Tyler."
Me and my brother had to watch this 3 TIMES in a row when we first saw it way back when to catch all the hints, the little one-scene blips of Brad Pitt cut into the movie.
LET'S F-ING GOOOO !!... This is gonna be good. 😲😲
Another great reaction! Your channel is quickly becoming one of my very favorite react channels. And the giant frowny face when you saw the sticker about recycling animals cracked me up. 🤣🤣
I was 100% sure I would never be interested in watching this movie, so I watched a reaction to it a while ago because I didn't care about spoilers.
Thanks! Ya this movie blew me away, I loved it so much more than I expected to! 🖤☺️👍
The Game is on my channel 👍
@jenmurrayxo dang I should have looked first. Oops sorry.
Meat Loaf was also in a quick scene in Wayne's World! 👍
Ohhh I just watched that on Patreon & didn't realize!! 🤦♀️🤦♀️
@@jenmurrayxo Yeah he played the bouncer outside the club. Easy to miss him! 🙂
By far one of my favorite movies. I had to watch this twice to understand this.
I'm super excited to see if your reaction in this thumbnail is what I think you're reacting to.
😳👍
Fincher delivers the dark nasty goods with superlative performances by Norton & Pitt making an effective modernd day Jekyll/Hyde - I'd add AMERICAN PSYCHO for a double feature (if you haven't seen that Jen - I can not recall - please do see it; and yes you need to see GUMP!)
Top 10 film for me. I need to check out the book.
"I haven't seen Forrest Gump. Should I see it?" Um... YEAH.
YES!!! One of my all-time favorite movies!!!!
Sooooo great ☺️👍
25:06 100% You will love Forrest Gump. 👍👍👍
27:08 12 Monkeys is a great movie, and features some of Brad Pitt's finest work.
Shhh! Jen! You're breaking the first rule of Fight Club! You don't talk about Fight Club! 😅
0:50 - "It involved a pool"... that'd be "Choke", the only other Chuck Palahniuk book I've read.
It was Lou's first night at fight Club so he had to fight
Absolutely love your reaction to this movie. It always kinda bums me out when people sit and deconstruct the movie until they figure it out before the twist. Ugh. But I love when people like yourself go along for the ride with “The Narrator” until the twist and then you can see how much their mind is blown. Beautiful. 😆
One if a few movies ever made that I advocate for every young man to watch: FightClub, and Dead Poet Society being two of them :)
"You dont know where I've been Lou! 😂YOU DONT KNOW WHERE I'VE BEEN! 😂"
Greatest. Scene. Ever.
I think Fight Club should be watched by young men alongside a responsible adult who can explain indoctrination.
Yes, watch both "12 Monkys" & "Forest Gump". :)
One of the best twists in cinema. And every time you watch it you'll pick up little details you've never seen before.
And yes, Forest Gump is a must watch. It was ground breaking in the way it was made and the story and acting are incredible.
It's so cool that you read Chuck Palahniuk. I don't really like Joe Rogan but Chuck Palahniuk did some great podcasts with him.
