      music for musicians

    • @JustTheTip556
      @JustTheTip556 3 года назад +3

      Very true. Usually only musicians can get into super proggy, intricate type stuff. I dated a girl who was pretty open to music but the only prog or metal I could really get her into was Chon and Nemertines

    • @MrGreendayzed
      @MrGreendayzed 3 года назад +1

      @@JustTheTip556 I think it's more of a section of musicians. The ones who like experimental and/or technical stuff.
      Along with the non-musicians who are just really into it, similar to people who love sports but would never play.

    One thing I love about Henrik Linder is that I've noticed that he is playing with a different drummer this time and while it's a tad more subdued, you still get that odd feeling that he's just a technique monster: At times he barely looks like he's moving around and you can easily miss his attack altogether because of how locked in with the drums (For non-players the attack is basically the sound the string makes when you first pluck it: you hear first a slight percussive element along with the sound of the note, well not on this case but with most bass players you usually do)
    This might not be the most exiting thing in the world for non-musicians but if you ever had a band you know just how many times tiny differences in player and tempo can make you instantly aware someone is off but Linder is as accurate as a dance music editor just dropping in both bass and drums on a computer grid that get tied up 100% of the time, except he's an actual human being that has perfected his playing this much.

    In an interview with another bass player, Henrik mentioned that he had a few nightmares before recording this (one track of a few more in this collection, I believe). And yet he looks so in control… all three so ‘in the zone’…
    This piece gives me vertigo 😵‍💫
    I’ve also heard Eldar playing classical piano repertoire absolutely masterfully, -worth listening to.
    Thanks for this reaction, and the many meaningful observations 🙏

    I too grew up listening to the AMAZING music of the '60s and '70s, and this kind of music DIDN'T YET EXIST. It totally FRIES me to hear people of my generation lamenting that "they don't make good music any more." They're obviously listening to Pop, which has ALWAYS kinda sucked, but this stuff is LEAGUES beyond what the virtuosos of my day could ever have imagined!

    Awesome!!! Really cool to know that there’s a layer of reaction that you’re in + the exposure of this stuff to people that aren’t familiar with this space of incredible talent. Good on you for working to count out some of those passages first go around too, haha
    I’m with you - I’m halfway between your generation and the one coming up with this as their input, so it’s wild to see what guys who grew up listening to the stuff I grew up with have been able to accomplish (Animals as Leaders, Periphery, etc). I don’t want to say I’m envious, but can relate that it’s so cool to see how it’s evolving and making music that challenges what we’ve already heard.

    As far as I'm concerned, this *is* prog - just prog (Jazz) more than prog (Rock)! The influences of the free jazz and fusion greats is evident - Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Joe Zawinul - I hear bits of them all in there ... but with the punchier, stronger bass & drums of a more modern prog / math rock thrown in as influences, also :-)

    Not to be critical, I do like this, I also like Casimir Liberski, and I'm a huge Gartska/AAL fan, but to me, this really avant-garde and super technically difficult-to-play kind of music makes me think of young virtuosic guys that have been playing and studying music since a young age who've recently graduated from music school. Now they're on "the scene" and violently projectile vomiting out everything they know and have ever learned about music and they're composing with an intentional emphasis on the most technically difficult and complex things in music hoping it will help them stand out and be noticed. And there's nothing wrong with that. It's analogous to a soldier fresh out of boot-camp who's craving combat because he wants to test his new skills. lol

    Nice feedback, thanks. Yeah, I've been listening to Eldar (Djangirov) for the past few years and he's really come along, as has Henrik (Linder) through his musings with Dirty Loops in Sweden, and well, Matt Garstka is just an amazing Human Rhythm Machine -- hope I don't get bashed for saying this, but is Matt "under-used" with Animals As Leaders? I got the impression that this Master Trio would be releasing a recording soon, and I hope that is still the ultimate goal. Underneath his Classical "chops" I believe Eldar is a true Hard Bopper whom Bud Powell would have so loved: Eldar's tune "Polaris" from his Re-imagination CD proves this.

    Great song arrangement, great musicianship skills. This reminds me of Progressive stuffs such as Tigran Hamasyan and a lil bit of Djent such as Animals As Leaders, yeah of course that drummer is from AAL. I like the chords that the guys playing, it brings out the dark progressive energy and to play it, y'all need to focus and have that progressove + djent kind of feel in it. Two of the things I noticed: The Bass at points has an octaver pedal, not a dub in my opinion. You can have ones that can add in multiple octaves, even at a slight delay and that sounds exactly like some of the high end notes you can hear that are doubled over the bass.
    The other was that I love that the piano player was isolated to clean up the tone, where as the bass and drums are pocketed together. As we know bass and drums are so closely intertwined and they really seem to feed of each others energy.

    Hey Mr. Geebz. Was wondering if you could do a breakdown from something more hip-hop oriented. I'm always curious about the production that goes into that genre, and how that genre intersects or differs from other genres, production wise. Maybe something from Outkast like Roses or Hey Ya. Would be interesting to see you shine a light on some aspects of their production.

    I'd love to see your reaction to a French band: Lizzard - "Blowdown" and I love how you're starting the scratch the surface of Australian music too! Awesome work mate and thankyou :)

    These gem tracks get me amped up like 3 cups of coffee worth, a great way to wake up in the morning. :D ... if you're looking for something else interesting possibly I was thinking about Dave Davidson. He's been putting out albums with his band Revocation for a while now. I think they're in the Boston scene. Death metal or thrash make up the core of most of their songs but Dave always busts out these flowing and melodic solos, I love that guy :D

    Holy shit, this sounds like a collab between Cory Henry and Tigran Hamasyan!!!!!! :o
    It is also very funny how a genre of Metal inspired by Jazz, eventually ended up inspiring Jazz musicians. I love it!!!!!
    If you start doing (drum) playthroughs... :o then check Baard Kolstad (Leprous) - The Sky Is Red
    Otherwise I would recommend you to check: Dir En Grey - Vinushka, some day when you can fit them in your busy schedule :)

    I'm surprised no one has suggested Sleep Terror... it's basically surf music meets instrumental death metal! Featuring the fastest drummer on the planet, (Lord) Marco Pitruzzella. You're gonna want to listen to a few tracks... it just might be your new favorite thing lol
