Eldar Djangirov (pianist) is one of the most underrated and absolutely mind-blowing musicians out there. Also, they only did two other songs - definitely check out "Torque" if you get a chance, I think you'd really dig it!

Your face when it started was CLASSIC! Yeah...that song is a lot, but I figured you'd find it interesting. Matt Gartska is the drummer from Animals as Leaders. I mentioned them to you but couldn't decide on a song you could check out. Maybe "Red Miso"?

No guitars, just three brilliant musicians filling up so much musical space you might get the impression this was a bigger ensemble.

Heard an interview w/ Henrik a couple of days ago, he mentioned being invited to play on this by Matt Garstka - a new name to me, so of course I went there next and found this one. I don't know Henrik's usual responses, and if he's always low-key, but in this interview he gave the impression that he was stressed playing with them, that they were A LOT. Yep, they are. Insane, but I loved it.

You should check out Matt Garstka's band Animals as Leaders, he's an incredible drummer and he's got some playthroughs from his band. I suggest Red Miso or Monomyth or Gordian Naught

Nah, this wasn't nothing to Henrik. Not at all. The three songs recorded by GEM were all recorded in one live take (not sure if they had to do several full takes per song, but what we see here is one, continuous live take), with just a few keyboard backing tracks, as Eldar couldn't possibly play all the keys parts simultaneously. Henrik said he was so scared and nervous about this he had nightmares about it, in the weeks leading up to the recordings. :D
And no, there are no guitars. Just the three of them, so everything not bass and drums is played by Eldar on piano or synths. Eldar Djangirov is a complete madman, and the one who composed this. Check out Torque and Crazy Tweaks from the same project. Complete insanity and SO ridiculously good!

Where did you hear about Henrik saying that he was nervous? I've been trying to find where he said it.

@@JekDrummerTime I think it was in one of the podcasts he's done. Might have been a Swedish one, though I do have a feeling it was in English. Might also have been in one of all his Q&A:s that he's done in Instagram stories. Which sucks, because none of those two are possible to google, so I can't give you a definitive answer. Sorry! :(

@@JekDrummerTime And because I absolutely HATE not being able to cite sources, I - of course - had to go back and skim through some podcasts, and I found it! It's in a podcast with Janek Gwizdala, called The Practice Room. In episode 76 he has an interview with Henrik Linder, and they talk about the GEM thing towards the end of that episode (somewhere around the 42-43 minute mark, on the Spotify version at least). That episode can also be found on Janek Gwizdalas youtube channel, in one of his vlogs, if you want the video with the interview. :)
I'd recommend listening to the whole thing, it's really interesting. Bits about how Dirty Loops work, and how he and Aron used to practice during college. Also some practicing tips that are useful no matter what instrument you're playing.

@@JekDrummerTime It really does. The other day he said, in an Insta Q&A, that he used to focus on not making mistakes and when he made one, it went to his head. I sometimes tend to do that as well, and I beat myself up a lot about it, so I screenshot that one, to use as a reminder, that even ridiculously good players do that from time to time. It's something to think about next time I get stuck in my own head over silly mistakes. :)
