"I think we should be adding books, not subtracting them." Excellent!
The reason I enjoy this program so much is I like to hear other opinions without all the drama. Thank you again
No drama, just discourse here on Firing Line! Thank you for watching.
Liked this interview. Every person or journalist has different style of reporting or interviewing people. But Ms. Hoover kudos to you for being a breath of fresh air for not having a combative style of interview which is very rare now a days with journalists specially in United States. I learned more about Andrew Sullivan in this interview and he's a fascinating person.
Again another well said episode. Greatly appreciated.Liked his comments , we need to be more humble..and he enjoys a good argument..you learn something.!!!!
No one can ever show me an example of trumps authoritarianism ( or how he was more of a tyrant than previous presidents ).. the whole idea that America First policies are somewhat fascist is ridiculous
One of the most widely accepted definitions of fascism is the primacy of the nation state. If the slogan were "Americans First", it would be less fash and more populist. But as it stands, it's the inverse.
As far as his purported authoritarianism goes, I'd say he's probably the least authoritarian POTUS since Kennedy. [edit: but that's not saying much, huh? haha]
@@agaperion Weak argument.
@@OneAdam12Adam What argument? I don't think I made one but, rather, simply expressed an opinion. And here's another one: Merely asserting "weak argument" is what's weak here. If you don't want people to dismiss you as a shitposter, try actually saying something worthwhile.
Yes, this interview of Andrew Sullivan brought to you by the Asness Family Foundation
Margaret Hoover is an excellent interviewer and asks important questions in a non confrontational way! Bravo!
“ it is when you are most certain, that you should be the least certain” ! Some words of wisdom we should all take under advisement!
If nothing else Dave Chappelle is humorous because of simply pointing out the absurdities of the truth. I found the last special particularly poignant when he spoke of his Trans friend trying to become a comic and then his friends suicide. I found nothing in the special objectionable. The LGBTQ community needs to get a sense of humor.
The LGBTQ community does not exist as a monolith. Many of us support Dave Chappelle. The few who pretend to speak for us are way off the mark.
He's wrong about Critical Race Theory. I don't know of any schools teaching it in the 26 years in it. It's a false flag that Rethuglikkkans love to use
I really enjoyed this interview!
Excellent discussion!
Sorry I didn't see this until now. Sullivan is insightful. Hoover gave him the space and time to make his very important points. Nice job!
What a great interview! Another winner. Iam going out to buy the Book. Finally a half an hour of Sanity and Clarity
Trump exemplifies “freedom of speech” you need to be able to separate the man from the policy. Do I wish he’d say less;, yes, but that’s limiting his speech. He knows how to make this country run. He even managed to tax the rich (SALT). Now they want to get rid of the 10,000 cap
What kind of drugs are you on that makes you so delusional? He's an insurgent traitor.
Mitch - Might you be overstating things? I agree with separating policy from the man. However, I also believe we need a third category… effectively implementing said policy. If we do, we get something like:
1) Man - Trump is imperfect at best… in that his rhetoric was highly combative and unnecessary, but he loved the country, his kids… is not a racist… but he did say some very inelegant things.
2) Policy - Mostly terrific.
3) Implementation of Policy - Mostly horrible. Trump understandably acted as if he was the CEO of America, not the President of America. He thought what he said went.. and that is not how our system works. He needed to gain support through explanation and persuasion… but he never did that. He simply said… more or less… “Do it.., and if you don’t, you’re stupid.” This is true on UN/NATO, on healthcare, on immigration, etc.
I am not suggesting that Trump would have won all of his policy implementation initiates had he done as I suggest… but I believe he would have had a higher probability of winning.
@@StrategicWealthLLC he lowers taxes, de regulated which made us energy independent, stopped the flow at southern border, made more peace in Middle East than any other president in history…what specifically are you talking about, implementation wise? I think he retread too many cabinet positions. I would have loved to see no DC insiders in his administration. His biggest failure in my opinion was he didn’t “drain the swamp” the number one reason I voted for him. He was crass for sure, usually it was a counter punch. When he did attack someone, usually they deserved it, all of career politicians need to be challenged and talked about truthfully, they are corrupt scum. I’m not so sure I wouldnt celebrate a nuclear terrorist attack there, right where they work.
Just remembered his immigration: when he canned DACA in an attempt to get Congress to finally DO SOMETHING, that’s not CEO ish. He had all sorts of obstacles put in front of him, the last thing DC wants is an effective leader. These people are garbage, it’s not just Dems either, it’s mostly them but, I also think of these high level bureaucrats that truly believe they run the show, presidents come and go they are permanent. A good way to go in would be to fire all high level civil servants, pay their salaries but get them out of power, promote some fresh faces. Our bureaucracy has been high jacked, it’s rewarded with insider stock tips, bloated budgets. How about instead of trying to spend your whole budget so it doesn’t get cut the next year, what if we rewarded a bureaucracy with cash incentives to come in under budget. Sorry I’m all over the place. The edibles kicked in 😆
@@mitchcumstein9808 - Before I start, I want to make it clear that I am not a Trump hater.. or a Trump supporter. I am trying to call balls and strikes…. relative to others that suggest Trump was a scourge on humanity… or some who believe Trump was America’s best president.
Taxes - That may gave been Trump’s only legislative accomplishment in office (well, First Step Act, too). He did it with only R support… which means it won’t be permanent at all… as we see what is happening now. If we look at with clear eyes, we know it was a good thing to lower corporate taxes to competitive w/other nation levels… so that the US tax regime didn’t encourage companies to offshore their profits. So that was good. However, it came with changes on the personal side that aren’t so good. Now, people in the middle/lower end are even less likely to be paying taxes… as they advocate for public goods. That is not good for social fabric. The non-deductibility of state and local taxes was a great thing though.
2) Illegal Immigration - Trump’s rhetoric was largely awful, even though the policy was good. He was completely unsuccessful in border security legislation because he was a bully (as Ds called him a racist.., two to tango problem). He then did an unconstitutional end-run around Congress as he said he could get $ from other areas of federal budget. That’s BS… much in the same BS/unconstitutional way Obama said he had executive authority for DACA. Anyway, yes Trump reduced illegal immigration.. but only via executive order. As we now see with Biden’s (idiotic) action, nothing was permanent.
Middle East - Totally agree that embassy move was a good, long-term move. Totally agree that taking out Iranian general was a good move.
Climate - I don’t mind in the least that we left Paris accord.., but again, lousy rhetoric. No institutional support.. and now we are back.
Healthcare - Total and complete cluster f::k. And not because of McCain either. Trump had no alternative. He never even argued that without Constitutional amendment, the federal government didn’t have authority for it… in spite of SCOTUS decisions.
Energy - Yes, energy policy was good. Keystone pipeline was good. Again though, it was EA… and no long term, bi partisan support. Thus it is gone.
Regulation - This one is tough. Everyone on the Right says he cut regulation that led to the boom. Everyone on the Left said he is destroying the planet. When I have tried to understand the details, I get lost in a sea of paper that doesn’t tell me anything concrete. Therefore, I sincerely don’t know what happened here.
Military - I love our military and I want a strong one. That said, I also believe our military is like any other govt organization.. and has a desire to get bigger fir it’s own sake, has overstated its usefulness, etc. The US spends more on its military than the next 10 largest nations combined. That is nuts… but Rs are too wrapped up in the flag to realize it. Trump added another $50 billion or more to that budget. He said we need out of Germany hand he’s policy wise correct. Are we out? No. Failure of policy. Same said for Afghanistan. He pushed that into Biden’s term to let him deal with fallout… and Biden certain bit the dirt with that one.
NATO/UN - Trump appropriately criticized the UN/NATO. I mean he gave VERY good criticism! Is anything different today? Nope.
COVID - I think Trump takes way too much heat for COVID given it was a novel disease, America’s state vs federal structure, and the fact that Americans are the most obese population in the planet. That said, his communication was terrible! He did not show leadership about state’s fighting for resources.. or masking pros/cons… or managing Fauci/CDC (executive branch agencies) over statements, etc.
2020 Election - It was perfectly reasonable to challenge election results given a belief in massive voter fraud and/or statutorily inappropriate behavior by some states in their changes to election ballots, drop boxes, etc. HOWEVER, Trump was unable to prove massive election fraud… as Guilliani completely ruined his reputation as he spouted the Trump narrative about Dominion voting machines. Furthermore - and this is what angers me most - Trump literally advocated for Pence to not accept state electors for the electoral college vote …so that Trump could remain as president. Not only did Trump advocate for a policy that is unconstitutional as hell, but he did so to keep himself in the seat! That gave the Left all the ammunition it needed… to claim that Trump is an authoritarian who was willing to destroy America’s representative democracy to keep himself in power - because that single act showed it to be true! Damnit!
Now, the media was over-the-top in their hatred of Trump. That had to impact his ability to implement. Nevertheless, I think the bigger issue is that Trump behaved like a family business CEO… that was accustomed to getting his way by directive… and not acting as the president in a checks and balances governmental system where the weakest branch is the executive branch.
I believe America is sick of the nutty policies of the Left. While Rs are no panacea, it is very likely an R will be our next president. The only thing that changes that calculus is if Trump runs as the R candidate. The Left has such a hatred for him that it will unite against his presidency such that Trump will not win. But many on the Left will vote for an R as long as that R is not Trump.
I haven't watched FL for decades; I'll become a regular based on watching this program. Early on, I wasn't impressed by Ms Hoover, I almost turned FL off. I stuck with it, eventually I admired her for 2 reasons: Even though she was seated, Ms Hoover was thinking on her feet. Ms Hoover posed questions that let this viewer learn who her quest was - thank you.
As for Andrew Sullivan, all I have to say, "McConnell." Oops, tax cuts for those that don't need it to the point they should refuse them.
We appreciate you tuning in!
Margaret hoover + jon Avalan are the 2 people that give me hope for the media.
thank you Andrew for voting for Biden. what a disgrace.
“It is making people more racist”, maybe better to say ANNOYED! I don’t care about someone’s outer appearance.
And if I’m supposed to I WONT, I won’t play into your narcissistic behavior, that’s all it is, self centered, I’m special… no your not, your just another person in the same boat I’m in
Sullivan is a true voice of reason to the psychotic cultural leftists
The man looks sexier and healthier than he did back in the 90s...great job, Andrew!

as once Shirley MacLaine did. . . loved it for i, had a plum ripe peach fall in the palm of my hand within 15 minutes of arrival at our destination in this land, courtesy a gust of wind. . . must have read me thoughts. . wondering what it tasted like.

so far, its worked like a charm for me, live in respect of one and all
by the way, just the other day when i watched the Climate summit run overtime. . . threw me head up in the air and shared 'time to dismiss all this talk and just say, get real. we don't need a growing economy, we need to look after one another . . and it not the carbon foot print. .
from long before covid struck, mother earth no longer supported us in optimum health . for the ultimate HealThy World Fix? plant flowers round home and school for melting violence from our midst
Never walk further than your feet can carry you, for your body can accommodate earth changes underfoot. . . this the first time in in 50 years. . . we have been in a cosmic sssschizzzz out. . mining the earth of its gems and minerals? good as a cosmic lobotomy , since the cosmic template for life on earth is scribe in earth's crust , we have whittled away at , may it mellow humanity . . .. much as they will when ten they learn
oh my, just saw how long winded i am getting. . best we hush
Just a wish list of guests to be considered in the future. It might not be in your alley or perhaps PBS and your sponsors won't allow you but it would be interesting to get Dr. Robert Lustig and Dr. Thomas Seyfried. They have great contribution in the medical field but it haven't penetrated the main stream yet as what they're espousing is contrary to popular beliefs.
Things were better under Trump.
Groomer or just happy?
I enjoyed the interview but look forward to Trump running again.
Book burning... The Gop's idea of Freedum
Ralph --- But justified when Dems push for censorship? Please watch the program again . . .
@@jllpmusicman People have been burning books for a lonnnnng time... It NEVER works for long, and always precedes the ultimate violence... War...
