"Let the states decide... until we're in power and can write a federal law about it." How are we going to talk about letting the states decide on the abortion issue without also bringing up the overreach of Texas trying to find women who went out of state to have an abortion so they can prosecute them?
I couldn't agree more! And keep in mind, "state's rights" has been, is, and always will be code for wanting to maintain the right to own slaves. It has slowly changed to just code for ways to oppress but when that phrase is used al of our red flags should go up
The idea is that people in California shouldn't dictate policy in Texas and vice versa. In your example, Texas should have no say, or recourse if someone travels to California to get an abortion, and California should have no say in the gun laws of Texas. Unless the other state has a problem with it, Texas has zero right to punish people, including residents of Texas, for what they do in other states. Open carry and constitutional carry is legal in Arizona. California has no right to punish California residents if they go to Arizona and open carry while there. Abortion is legal in California, Texas has no right to punish Texas residents for going to California, or any other state where is it legal, and undergoing a procedure that is legal in that state. States rights does not extend to controlling your residents actions and activities when they are in other states.
@@bingosunnoon9341 Actually you have it backwards. Letting the states decide actually meant states abolished slavery before the nation as a whole could come to an agreement. The north did ultimately force the south's hand because it had gone on long enough but by letting other states abolish slavery before that point, the government knew they had the majority of people on their side. To apply this to abortion, most states have abortion legalised. The majority of the country supports abortion. By allowing the states to decide, the Supreme Court's decision didn't affect the vast majority of Americans. There are some states that need to work it out but this way women aren't at the mercy of Congress about their care. Congress can't make decisions about anything.
Congratulations on 21 seasons. So happy to see you back. I was counting down the days on my calander. Yea, I don't have much else going on but I love your show and your podcast. 😁
I agree! I do, however, wish that when discussing what’s being taught in schools, Bill had at least one guest on the panel who legitimately knows what’s being taught and could push back on the false Rightwing narrative that all of our schools are all in on teaching 5 year olds they can be any gender or species they want to be since that is not happening on a widespread basis - if at all. In general, I feel like Bill has gotten sloppy over the years when it comes to researching the topics he discusses, which has resulted in him being ill-prepared to challenge people like Barr about their assertion the Church is under attack in America or that White people are under attack. Losing a long-held position of privilege or power is not the same as being under attack.

What's soul crushing is the lack of efforts in trying to create an artificial womb so we don't NEED abortion. That and getting better at predicting when a woman will be in danger if pregnant.
Aren't majority of the deformity tests and genetic abnormality test occur during the first two trimesters? Thus this decision should be made before we enter the "later term abortion" realm?"

@@bumblebootwiddletoes5185 Opening their positions in public sounds good to me. To bring things to the light, they should bring the better in them, I like that.
How can you say, "Let the states decide," without admitting that it really should be "Let the mother decide."? If the Fed cannot legislate then no one can!
There was an opportunity to codify _Roe_ into federal law when the ruling was leaked. It failed in the Senate, but they were able to protect Marriage Equality, based on the wording Justice Thomas included in the opinion and in preparation of the court overturn the Right to Gay and interracial marriages.
Because women can't decide among themselves what exactly they want to law to be. Okay, maybe about 2/3rds of them want there to be legal abortion, but the other 1/3 are so strongly and passionately against it that they'll vote for anyone who identifies to be pro-life on that issue alone. Democrats are either in denial about this or akin to big dollar donations from the abortion lobby. I would like to see more civilized debates among pro-choice and pro-life women instead of having them act as if the other side is treasonous and put politicians in an absolute bind. At least we can kind of see how things will play out now that states have their own power to decide.
Most Republicans suddenly stop saying "let the states decide" when they have the votes to make their agenda pass federally. The few who really do stick to that principle even when it's not convenient point out certain phrases in the constitution which were put there to appease separatists. But they never give empirical evidence showing that a state having anywhere from 1M to 30M people is somehow just the right size such that anyone with a larger or smaller jurisdiction should be powerless by comparison.
Screw the Fed... we are "These States United". We all have a different identity under a common umbrella. The Constitution, Commerce and Currency are the only common denominator between us. I personally cherish the fact that if I don't like the rules of where I live, I can go to a place that I do.
The health exceptions for abortion that Ms Mace talks about don't include emotional illness: I was pregnant at 17 and I was also a serious alcoholic with suicidal thoughts and a boyfriend that cheating on me with everyone in town. I knew that if I brought that life into this world, we would be reliant on welfare and my kids would have been as messed up as I was. No one knew I was so emotionally unstable. I looked just fine on the outside--I was the only person on the planet that knew what the future of that child would have been like. No doctor or politician has the right to decide whether a woman goes through with a pregnancy or not.
That is the problem w restrictive legislation. She doesn't know she is negotiating w magat republicon domestic terrorists. Some of them are in her party in the 118th congress.
Agree. I believe the issue is a right to privacy, and bodily autonomy, and is nobody's business; I go so far as to insist that to have an opinion about a woman's pregnancy is a mental perversion akin to having an opinion about your garments or and especially your undergarments. It's gross, vile, and disgusting and a disguise for sexual blackmail.
So very grateful to have access to conversations like this!!! Thank you, Bill, for being a voice of reason for 30 years!!! Thank you, HBO, for the luxury of this show uncensored.
Yes, people who haven't been there, simply cannot imagine how terrible those situations are. Ask any OB/GYN if there are pregnancies that truly need to be terminated, and they will all tell you, "sometimes, it's a mercy". The government needs to stay out.
The problem with the last argument made is that almost all abortions do NOT involve a defect of the fetus of any kind. That is actually quite rare. Most abortions involve a decision by the mother not to have her baby for a variety of reasons and that is a selfish decision not taking in account the voice of the baby to be born. We cannot kill a baby just because the mother does not want it.
He knows first hand that trump is stupid, crazy, and amoral. He must still think trump can be kept under control despite what we've all seen. If the GOP wants to continue advocating their failed policies that having their party for two terms in the White House has preceded every major economic downturn since the Panic of 1873, that's one thing, but acquiescing to someone pandering to the prejudices of the willfully ignorant just to get their vote is a betrayal to the very concept of unalienable rights for All.

Mr. Sullivan, that was a most concise and thoughtful reasoning of why the decision to use the medical treatment known as abortion should be left completely to the person it solely affects. Thank you
The would be infant? There is no sole party affected in most cases. I don't think abortion should be banned, I think it has many needed applications and it should be free and accessible. But it needs to be well regulated, there needs to be a pretty prompt cut off point, and transplant should be performed whenever possible. You can't decide you want a thing/life (whatever you want to call it) destroyed, then turn around and say what you want done with it. You want it out, they'll take it out and give it to someone who wants it.

I live in Europe. I’ve had an abortion on the NHS at 26 weeks. Congenital heart defect. Worst decision I ever had to make but I wasn’t about to traumatise my 3 year old with getting to know her sister as a baby who lived and died in hospitals for the only 2-5 years of her life. And I thank god the system and doctors here didn’t make timing and law the biggest issue. My homeland the USA is backwards.
I’m sorry for your predicament- but the opposing view of that is that you taught your daughter that simply giving up and erasing the “problem “ was the answer. In my opinion the greater lesson was that life is hard. And would have been that we persevered to protect the weak even though it was hard. Not a traumatized child. The sooner a child understands that the better prepared for life they are. I’m sure this won’t be a welcomed comment. But I believe that if you post something publicly, you agree to be rebutted. I don’t mean it as an attack. Just to show the opposing point of view. I’m attached to the medical community in a couple ways. I can’t tell you how many kids that I know who were born with defects , that defy the odds. Trusting an OB doc to be a fortune teller is a fools errand. If you heard the conversations that go on behind closed doors with those doctors, you’d probably never see one again. If you did you’d definitely choose a female. I’ve been a fly on the wall too many times and heard with my own ears. I’m sorry for your loss. But it’s just not a justification for killing in my opinion

@Mette Kristensen How can we be libertarians and bow down to authorities? Those are two contradictory statements. Does Bill Maher have any respect for his audience?
The congresswoman brought up something that I have been thinking for years: how can the GOP claim the moral high ground on abortion, when so many of them are also opposed to giving all women access to birth control? The only reason that I can think of-and I’m going to catch some flak for this-is that it isn’t, and never was about saving the lives of fetuses. It’s about control.
It is. It’s pent up resentment of social conservatives have against the gains made in women’s rights over the last century or so. Especially amongst the evangelical crowd, and other right wing groups who think society should be patriarchal. They can’t actually end abortion, and I think at least the leaders in the “pro-life” movement have known that from the get go. They just want the ability to punish women who do seek an abortion, and are willing to engage in some very cruel, disgusting behavior to achieve that goal. There’s a reason we call these kinds of people the “Christian Taliban”.
The GOP mostly has no problems with birth control, the money base of the Evangelical movement does, and it's a cash cow they don't want to offend. Same thing with gay marriage, most Republicans don't give a shit, but money wins elections.
Here's a simple reason: perhaps many of them see both matters morally equivalent? If you prevent a pregnancy, the argument might go, aren't you just doing an abortion before conception can occur? The central issue is about "life"; some people see 'frustrating' life through contraception as not much better than 'ending life' through abortion. It's not an argument I find persuasive, but I don't find it hard to see how people might. Cheers
PS Every time a woman goes to a physician to discuss anything about her body it should be private as well as their decisions regarding the reason for The Visit. End of story I cannot believe we live in a time where governments are in our doctors private conversations.

Andrew Sullivan crushed that last part. He put a humane perspective on the table. Stop pretending like people are just trying to kill their babies and realize they just had to make a very difficult decision to terminate a pregnancy that they wanted. It is sad that life had to end so early, and that it didn't work out as intended but there is no happy solution and the choice should be left to the parents, not some religious nut who believes in invisible wizards in the sky.
Like terminating a pregnancy because you're too young or you have your whole life ahead of you. Those are the most common reasons why someone has an abortion. Besides rape, incest or danger to the mother i dont agree.
When did "someone else should pay for my stuff" get changed to "access to". Pay for your own stuff you mouches. Why do these liberal women want me to be financially responsible for their lady bits.
Well, the problem with his view to me is that medical science is not open for "opinions" to be debated in congress. The Republican on the panel defined herself as a lifer but turned around and expressed the medical exceptions meaning she's really pro choice but against abortions as birth control, like most of America. A woman's health should be between her and her doctor, not state or federal laws.
@DeltaElites what Republicans have ever said to let women die from medical problems rather than have an abortion? I think everyone agrees you always act to save lives! I have heard Republicans say that at a certain point, around 24 weeks or so, the fetus is viable outside the womb, so abortion isn't medically necessary any longer. You can simply remove the child & place it in an incubator just like any other premature birth. Killing it just doesn't make any medical sense at that point.
And fetal abnormalities! Yes, thank you Rep. Mace! And thank you Andrew Sullivan for your beautiful, thoughtful take. This issue of children developing fetal abnormalities is too often overlooked and a major component to the issue. We had a pregnancy that was going great until the very final ultrasound at around 21 weeks when a serious defect in our baby's heart was discovered. It was a nightmare. He would've been born and, if he survived, would've had 2 heart surgeries in his first six months of life. Additionally, not enough oxygen was getting to his brain, so there would've been massive issues there as well, IF he survived up to that point. It would've been a life doomed to suffering, and we had to decide whether to terminate the pregnancy or not. It was gut-wrenching, and even in typing this out it's making me misty-eyed... but an important factor as we discuss abortion and the legal arguments around it.

@@travisrepp3731 no, states right is a real thing with real consequences and a real solution to some issues. States rights is a fantastic concept.
States rights was big when slavery was still a thing. Let the states decide didn't work out then and it won't work out now.
This is the perfect amount of time for the Overtime segment. Nothing less than 15 minutes please

I would love real time if it were an hour of this. If I want swrmy comedy I can watch Bills last special. This is an example of the conversations we need to have and they need to be longer than 10 minutes

How can you say, "Let the states decide," without admitting that it really should be "Let the mother decide."? If the Fed cannot legislate then no one can!
Because women aren't rational half the time anyway

The decision to abort is the woman's to make. Period!
"emotional illness" LMAO

I'm pro-choice, but the decision also affects the other person who contributed to the creation of the fetus.

My condolences to you both 🤗. I'm glad you have other children to hug when times are bad.
@Mette Kristensen
How can we be libertarians and bow down to authorities? Those are two contradictory statements. Does Bill Maher have any respect for his audience?
The congresswoman brought up something that I have been thinking for years: how can the GOP claim the moral high ground on abortion, when so many of them are also opposed to giving all women access to birth control?
The only reason that I can think of-and I’m going to catch some flak for this-is that it isn’t, and never was about saving the lives of fetuses.
It’s about control.
Good point, There is a large faction of the GOP that believes that birth control is an abortion. aka Hobby Lobby
100% correct
Cheers

So support the politicians who aren't so crazy and let them try and get their party back on track.
Oh and if you are a right winger, same thing applies to the Democrats. Support the good ones and try and get their crazy ones voted out. Both parties have this issue.
Superb discussion. I was not happy with bill Barr's earlier discussion in the opening of the show, of the Muller document. Barr enabled the president at the time to do what happened January 6th with his characterization of that doc. One of many who allowed that Symptom to become a disease.
I envy people who can articulate their thoughts like, that do find the right words when necessary like this last guy
He's been a pretty fantastic guest over the years.
jordan peterson mentioned that if you cant write, you wont be a good speaker
@@energeez Jordan Peterson is a basket case. He's said a lot of things over the years that make no f-ing sense.
@@wirelesmike73 ok then. Gday.
Go Bill...thank you for standing up for Joe!
The fact that she'd back Dumpy totally invalidates Mace's "rising star" status. She's just another sucker.
yep, Charlatan to the core
Wow Nancy, you just lost me at Trump over Biden. That is disgusting.
Biden is the most corrupt President in history & it’s not even close. Also happens to have dementia & is easily the worst President in history. At least Trump had the country in good shape. This country is now in decline bcuz of this corrupt administration. Stop watching CNN & MSLSD.
I agree. She said she would vote for Trump, who lead an insurrection.
That's the R way: party over everything.
Biden is running this country jnto the ground fast and hard
Biden is Trump with media support. They both are corrupt politicians but the difference is it's not bad if Biden does kids in cages, forever wars, drone strikes in Yemen, and everything people complain about when Trump is doing it
Love Andrew Sullivan’s last point.
Very cool getting Bill Barr to do the show, we need more of this on both sides.
Problem with a 12-week; 15-week abortion cut off. It does NOT address the pregnancy is not viable (it takes much more than a heart beat to determine this) would be forced to continue a pregnancy that will not result in a live baby causing unnecessary medical risk and emotional trauma to the prenatal woman.
Anyone who happily supports a 12-week or 15-week limit clearly put ‘0’ effort into learning more about this complicated situation.
Am I the only one who could watch these 4 talk for another 4 hours and cover all the important topics of the day? Brilliant.
I am a Very Left Leaning Democrat and I really enjoyed this sensible conversation about Abortion Rights.
That’s a sign you’re not that intelligent I’m afraid. I lost count of how many strawman arguments and hyperbole from these 4 people.
I could do without seeing Barrs' fugly face for the rest of my life. I couldn't care less what he thinks about anything. And, I don't trust Mace as far as I could piss into a headwind, so... That would be a big NO for me.
Climate change is an important topic of the day and they ignored it. All Trump all the time is old news.
Yes
Believe it or not..opening guest Bill Barr got a round of hearty applause and cheers. Seriously? My God some peoples memories are short.👎🏾
Yeah, "Yay! We're talking to a traitor!"
" . . . is not just stupid, but crazy . . .: - Bill telling it like it is.
You could see in Mace's and Barr's faces that they don't disagree, . . .
yet they'd still vote for him????
I liked Nancy right up to the admission she’d support Trump. Inconceivable.
She wooed him for an endorsement. Look @ her campaign video from trump tower. She is a magat republicon hack.
Same here
Unfortunately the dude runs the party. I can’t imagine what would happen if DeSantis takes the nomination away from Trump, then republicans will finally see who they got into bed with
Because people miss peace and prosperity??
@@malvolio01 I hope that you don't mean peace and prosperity under Trump. Coz that is just laughable.

Ask bill barr that if he wants to buy coffee and donuts for Iran's anti-riot police.
Even corrupt BB would not go that far, intentionally, maybe otherwise like is decision regarding DJT.
Bill barr is very anti Iranian government unlike the left
Bill can change his stripes to suit the situation. Doesn't stand for anything but himself.
Happy Birthday Bill and it was such a shocking but wonderful surprise to see Bill Barr as a guest on episode 1.
Much better person, American, & human than Pompeo or Flynn Bannon etc
@@baberRuth really setting the bar high there.
i would have preferred Bill Burr...but it was a good get
Trump is a grifter, traitor yet Barr had his back before Vets & Americans & Cap Cops. Least sharks wont eat him bc of professional courtesy. Or maybe trump blkmailed him then I apologize.
Lousy interview! Bill can't even hold a position, Barr was allowed to get away with the same old Christians under attack .
The best exchange between sane polar opposites in the USA. Thanks to all, and Bill you are a joy to see no matter how old 😀.
Overtime is always the best part of the show :) 😍😍😍
bill barr says one thing but does different
yep, he is corrupt
thats how fascists act, just like his old boss and ron desantis.
Man I wish Bill could have a couple of more people on that push back on some of these topics
His humanity was on display and it was beautiful. So we'll expressed.
When did "someone else should pay for my stuff" get changed to "access to". Pay for your own stuff you mouches. Why do these liberal women want me to be financially responsible for their lady bits.
@@Celtic_Thylacine hows that for humanity fishcunt?

I really like Andrew Sullivan.
Sullivan made some really great points at the end. Dems take note please!!
I'm saddened by Andrew's arc over the years, but he stuck the landing at the end of this segment.
He's a welder? Clue me in
Well, the problem with his view to me is that medical science is not open for "opinions" to be debated in congress. The Republican on the panel defined herself as a lifer but turned around and expressed the medical exceptions meaning she's really pro choice but against abortions as birth control, like most of America. A woman's health should be between her and her doctor, not state or federal laws.
Eh, he basically stole Buttigieg’s quote on this
@DeltaElites what Republicans have ever said to let women die from medical problems rather than have an abortion? I think everyone agrees you always act to save lives! I have heard Republicans say that at a certain point, around 24 weeks or so, the fetus is viable outside the womb, so abortion isn't medically necessary any longer. You can simply remove the child & place it in an incubator just like any other premature birth. Killing it just doesn't make any medical sense at that point.
@@baberRuth Holding an single arc for years has gotta be orders of magnitude setting a new Guiness world record.
Keep these long format overtimes! Usually they're like 2-3 mins, too short
Wow, sorry you had to go through that! I'm generally pro life but certainly support your choice on that issue. That is a tough call to make
14:58 Sullivan. Word! If you watch nothing else in this video, at least watch this segment and you're good to go.
Kudos Andrew! Those who vote for a seditious insurrectionist, promote sedition & insurrection.
That either of the republicans on the show would vote for tRump again tells you the state of the Republican Party.
And the fact that fact that they identify the entire Democratic Party with the most obnoxious online activists.
Unlike Dummy cRATs , who installed Biden grifters , Clinton grifters, Hicktown Hochul in Vampire State of NY, and Graven Grusome in the People's Socialist Kingdom of California. 💩🤡🤮
Even more it identifies all the racists and people who do not love this country.
I was quite shocked to hear that too. It is scary and shows just how low that party is. I mean, really????
Its not hard to understand. We dont want your dementia-addled, elderly pedophile to be President anymore. We need Trump back.
Great panel, a nice legitimate adult conversation.
Come and watch Barr talk about character and it’s importance.
Excellent panel - Andrew had great additions to the convo and all were great to show people on both sides are normal and have valid points to add to the conversation 👌
Although Barr was a Drumpf lackey that allowed him to get away with heaps of 💩! 🤬
Barr has not suffered enough for what he went along with. He was so bad!
Happy and healthy birthday Bill; great show & Overtime tonight.
