I enjoyed this show more than I have for a long time. Not only great guests but the audience did not applaud every time someone said something.
I found the audience to be really irritating. Turn their volume down for one. And Bill was making comments because they wouldnt respond to intelligent comments but were overexcited for the "lower brow" jokes.
I'm always surprised at how many people watch the show but complain about Bills "boomer takes". I don't agree with him on a lot of things but I'm still a fan. Expecting someone to agree with you on every topic is weird to me. This is one of the last shows on TV that values freedom of speech, enjoy it while it lasts.
Same here bill is one of the few Atheists I like and can listen to for hours on end intellectually and I'm a Christian lol
He’s a boomer. Watch TYT if you want to be radicalized by younger people
@@dabidibup Or better yet watch Milton Friedman and sin no more.
Does he always skip over the hardest positions to defend?
I think these days it's because Bill's opinions are veering right versus where he was before... but you can also see he is conflicted in his own ideas
These guests are great. There are normal people out there.
Yeah, they're all great but I really like Katie Herzog. If you haven't checked out her podcast "Blocked and Reported" you should. It's a good one. :)
Yea great people creating a false equivalenxy between liberal "extremism" like prefering a gay person play a gay character or trying a UBI for only gay people and republican extremism that wants to hang Mike Pence and create independent fascist states. The "normal" Americans that are just as pissed at the left wanting to "cancel" people for making rude comments and the right that wants to cancel American democracy, or what little of it we have left.
Ill never understand why people think Bill Maher is just a common sense guy. He is catering to the "both sides" crowd that will likely stay home in november giving fascist enough powwr in certain states to challenge federal authprity to protect citizen's rights. We already see Texas GOP making it a platform position to literally succeed from the Union. Sure Maher will talk about the crazy, but he will spend equal time bitching about dwmocrats for being too "woke" as if that is an acceptable reason for people to stay home or vote red.
Maher and everyone else catering to the "both sides" narrative are the reason the supreme court did what they did. Its why the GOP knows there will no consequences for their highly unpopular agenda and actions. Because no matter how many righrs they take away no matter how many elections they steal no matter how authoritarian res states get, there will always be "moderates" giving people arbitrary and often irrelevant examples of how the other side fighting against all that is just as bad.
They are actually having conversation 👍🇺🇲
@@MichaelWagoner It's a great podcast, one of my favorite!
Sorry, but normal people aren't obsessing over trans people like these two
this is one of the better more entertaining panels i've seen on this show
It’s because it’s from a specific community and you don’t often get to hear credible gay voices disagree with the queer community at large.
Great panel- would love to see more Andrew Sullivan and crew back again in future episodes. Also, the “Representative” bit for Dem/Rep was spot on and what clearly is happening and how people are feeling
Katie Herzog is sort of a local "hero" around here, in Seattle. (For some.) It's kinda weird seeing her on Bill Maher, after reading her in "the Stranger" for so long. 👍
I liked her calm and witty presence
You sure about its personal pronoun preference?
And she's reasonable. How far have we slipped into stupidity as progressives when a columnist in The Stranger sounds completely reasonable to average Americans. This is actually a GOOD thing. Dems need to wake TF up.
Katie "fuck the kids" Herzog
@@JohnDoe-qp3bp You obviously know nothing about Katie Herzog. She is most definitely a she. Sure she is a tomboy and looks kind of androgenous, and she is gay, but she doesn't do any of that pronoun nonsense, isn't trans or nonbinary or anything, she's actually quite critical of the excesses of gender ideology and identity politics.
You might want to check out her podcast, 'Blocked and Reported', it's very good!
Love Katie. And Andrew is always a great panelist.
I think Christina is correct. Despair and economic pressure is stopping birth rates, not environmental ideals
These two are not mutually exclusive. The state of the environment in addition to many other factor could be the catalyst for this said despair.
@@h8stupidppl People in general are not that worried about the environment. They should be, but that's another issue. 2% of Americans consistently list the environment as the most important issue. 2%. That's around 15 issues they have a higher priority on.
The most likely reason for low fertility rates is women in the workforce
@@anthonysteen56 The main reason was mentioned, it's the possibility of birth control together with the legality of an abortion. Second was already abandoned and conservatives are working on destroying all progress that has been made in the last 200 years.
"Despair and economic pressure is stopping birth rates, not environmental ideals"
nope.
they've been looking at this for decades.
as countries get wealthier, they have fewer kids.
as families get wealthier, they have fewer kids.
Japan, Europe, and the US, just about the wealthiest regions int he world, have significant fertility problems now.
as this trickles down to third world countries, their birth rates should be dropping.
they have also suggested that hormones and other things we have been dumping into the environment has reduced sperm counts/ fertility.
this might be true.
idk if/how much that applies to countries outside the US.
but generally speaking, the poorer you are, the more kids you have, because the kids work and contribute to family income.
again, this has been studied. for decades.
US fertility has been dropping since... the 70s or 80s.
I guess I'm outta the loop. I'd never heard of Katie Herzog, but she is good!

So sad to know films like "Good Will Hunting" or "A Beautiful Mind" can't be made today because there are no actors around with an IQ in the 160's..........
It's so asinine to require actors to be like the characters they are required to play.
...and who could play a Cylon??
@@toriless Exactly
i know it aint the point, but 150-160 isn't where those characters were, both would be well over 200. Not a real important distinction for your point I know, and the point is absolutely right. Next thing you know there will be women playing drag queens, to pull a show example back in.
Also, isn't requiring only gay people or only high IQ people (to use your example) just a way to pigeonhole certain actors? Like saying, well, we can't cast this gay actor in this role because this role is a straight man. I swear, this stuff is getting ridiculous.
@@IDontBuyIt50 My bad ..... Thanks.
I should have known better than rely on a decades old - pre-internet -memory that Einstein was rated around 160; Googling confirms that was mentioned at the time, but wildly unreliable as no-one can tell what it was based on. best episode of the season!
I prefer the "Let adults decide for themselfes as autonomous individuals" over the "mostly black people smoke menthol cigarettes so making menthol cigarettes illegal is rascist" argument.
IMO the real issue is about making cigarettes extremely addictive with all the unnecessary addatives. You don't have to add all those chemicals to smoke a tobacco plant i think.
Adults don’t decide when they are addicted.
@@mayerkur1 absolutely! because addiction sneaks up on you like a ninja and can easily be denied or kept secret. And that is why the issue that should be adressed here is the fact they put addictive components in cigarettes rather than symbolically banning one particualar kind of cigarette.
The menthol ban is racist, with white liberals helping the poor black people who can’t think and decide for themselves. How have white liberals done in helping blacks? Look at any big city today, the poverty, lousy schools, dropout rate, crime, murders in the black community. The answer is crystal clear.

Good show this week Bill.
As a high school teacher, the joke of it all is the kids don't use Juul's anymore. They go for the disposable vapes because they have more flavors and hit harder. If this is really about kids, go after the disposable vapes.
💯 agree! It’s the disposable vapes. No one cares about Juul. Oh and while you’re at it look into Delta 8 and Kratom… whatever that crap is . Super addicting and that’s what all these teens and mostly dudes love to come in and buy at our store.
Or go after stores that are selling them to minors. Let adults make their own decisions.
@@neilyaremchuk6798 my boyfriend works at a very popular store here in south Florida which advertises the “lowest prices” for vapes, etc. you can find everything in the store including glass bongs little pipes that I assume you smoke crack out of that are not mean for weed. It’s not a liquor store but they sell liquor labeled as wine. He tells me the police even come in there all the time, especially when he has to work the overnight shift the police go in there and buy vapes and energy drinks. They’ll never target that store. The millionaire Moroccans the owners store and many other chains in the area do not care who they Target as long as they continue to make money. My boyfriend is wise enough to know he will be the one who will get in trouble if he sells to someone under age so he does his best to ID everybody but his coworkers do not. Go after the retail outlets that sell them to kids. After a few $500 dollar fines the store will stop selling to teenagers.
@@HH-gv8mx I know at least 3 people that have successfully weaned of opioids with the help of kratom so I think it should remain available. There are enough people in the prisons we do not need more reasons to lock people up. I think the evidence is clear the decades long war on drugs in this country did not do anything except energize prison businesses and ruin millions of lives by tearing apart families for minor non violent drug charges. Kratom is a leaf from a tree that grows in parts of Asia. It has been used to relieve pain for thousands of years in many Asian countries. If there is a national ban on Kratom you can bet that the influence on Govt. officials and DEA came from the Drug and alcohol Lobby.
By the same logic Tom Hanks shouldn’t play a soldier
I am 69. When I was young we argued that gov't should not be involved in health care because, sooner or later, the gov't would say the cost of health care required them to control our health decisions. We're here!!!
💯
So can we finally get universal healthcare, then? Like the rest of the first world...
Well not really, if this can reassure you.
States make lots of money off of cigarettes, with taxes and also through a thing called the Master Settlement Agreement. In the latter, the more a state sells cigarettes, the more cigarette companies have to give them money.
So banning nicotine vaping is not about health, it is about profits and money.
Reducing nicotine in cigarettes to get smokers to smoke more thus buy more, is certainly not about health, but money & profits.
Rest assured, the US government still doesn't give a sh%*t about anyone's health. They do care about making more money no matter the cost.
Interesting, thanks for that.
The thing with banning menthols is the government already banned all the other flavors in 2009. That's not to say that was a good idea either but this would at least make the law consistent.
And yet, cigars are still allowed to have flavours. And no nic cap on those either. Not really consistent.
Also, if cigarettes are so bad, vaping is 95% less harmful, why not ban the worst product first?
@@nerdanalog1707 many vaping products have received approval including vuse. Juul has received a stay on the fda’s ban for now. But vaping itself has not been banned.

That’s because it is…..No one is saying it’s Safe, just safer. The facts clearly support that. Does that mean it’s healthy? No, anything foreign you put into your body will cause harm. However, compared to cigarettes, much safer (at least free base juices made in the US).

Really like bill. I think he walks the aisle well. However I disagree with his take on lowered nicotine in cigarettes. I just read Malcom Gladwell’s book ‘Tipping Point’. Great read. He quotes a few studies while talking about addiction and many of them suggest that lower nicotine in cigarettes would massively reduce the number of NEW smokers every year. I agree that it is worse for current smokers but you have to make a decision sometimes and I think that was the right one
There is also much research suggesting reducing nicotine to approximately 5% of current levels does not result in compensatory smoking
So you agree with federal oversight of your body?
The body wants what the body wants, and when you hook it on some substance as bad a nicotine, it will overcompensate to maintain that level of response. Many people I know used the nicotine vapes to quit, though I did not. I use cannabis now as a cancer protocol to keep my cancer GONE. Smoking cannabis does NOT do damage to the lungs and there is a California study that clearly showed it, especially in light of the fact they were looking to prove cannabis CAUSES damage, which they never did find. Please do not lump cannabis vapes in with the trash they sell with nicotine. Yes, I hate that stuff, it makes me gag when walking thru the cloud of smoke in front of restaurants and such. I smoked for 30 years, it was pretty impossible for me to quit. But vaping saved the day. 4 years and counting now. The hard part of quitting smoking for me, and I think most people, isn't quitting the drug. It's quitting the habit.

Are you sure?
But William Shatner could definitely play an alien, because he *was* an alien: he was from Canada.
But I hate aliens, they're always stealing good-paying union jobs where you get to be a starship captain and bone green women... 😂
@ja dav- the pendulum of authentic representation is extreme for a reason: to promote the real inclusion of people who were being played by whites in blackface, Asian (oriental) makeup and stereotypes of Native Americans to name a few. Your sarcastic comment as I presume a white person is lost and tone deaf. 😏
Good one
Six minutes in and we know the audience didn't understand the assignment and the rest of the show it was the awkward nemesis, lol
That black woman has an amazing smile and manner

I think that Bill had her on the mind....that is why his game was off.
@@Demarcointuit I wouldn't blame him. She was quite poised, sophisticated and refined in her delivery. And she appeared to be rather well-informed.

Addiction is slavery
Worldwide - educated people are having less children. It’s too expensive plus the world is a depressing place.. My experience as a white NYC Boomer and Marlboro smoker starting in the 70s, the majority of black people smoked Menthol cigs and about 80% of white people smoked non menthol and about 20% of white people smoked menthols
More Katie Herzog on the show, please.
R.I.P. Bill Maher!
Because you said "Tom Hanks could be wrong..." it is clear to all of us that during your summer hiatus, somewhere lightning will strike you down. lol
Cars, food, heat, housing for a family of 4 is too expensive.
The fertility issue is actually a big problem in many countries. Korea, Japan, Taiwan, etc......they are set to have almost no work force / tax base in the coming decades. The choice will be 1) mass immigration or 2) full automation--robot takeover
it's wealth. wealthier countries have fewer children.
probably a good thing if the robotic revolution winds up eliminating most jobs.
as for immigration, it's how the US and Europe are maintaining stable populations right now.
I, for one, welcome our robot overlords.
It's NOT a problem, it's a good thing. Limitless growth is a moronic concept.
@@vforwombat9915 or a new slave labor for the elite .
You people don't seem to realize that we need a certain level of population growth to sustain the economy. If population growth crashes it can take the entire economy with it -- permanently. There won't be enough young people paying into Social Security to cover the benefits for retired people.
Btw, Andrew is totally right- the extraction process to make vapes denuded so much from the flower. It’s usually just THC and some food grade terpenes added back in. Flower has the whole suite of cannabinoids, terpenes, and everything else. The highs are totally different, and most real smokers don’t like vapes for that reason. They may use them for convenience, but a joint always wins over a vape.
@King Mob Fair point-- the word "vape" has multiple meanings, but I'm assuming they meant vaping oil. But I disagree on the flavor aspect-- I feel like it all taste like burnt popcorn. That's why I never liked those volcanoes
Vaping seems more chemical and flower is easier to control how much is taken in from a “maintenance” perspective. Some of us NEED to get a little high for anxiety or pain, and vaping can quickly take you beyond what you were looking for. Then you are too high and you get the tweaker effect.
I still don't get this sentiment that "Actors have to BE a member of X community in order to portray that community on screen." Actors act. It's what they do. By design, their lot in life is to portray various roles. Straight, gay, bi, trans, green, blue, red, magenta, turquoise, doesn't matter. Picking an actor for their acting ability should be the goal, not picking an actor because they meet the right minority requirements. All actors worked hard to reach their position in life. Directors and producers aren't automatically bigots or racists for picking one person and not another.
Don’t bother trying to be reasonable with people who can’t see reason.
Exactly. It's humans playing humans. Period.
You better watch it. The Left is gonna come at you hard for questioning that "logic"
Yes, lots of gay actors have played straight roles of course too.
@@benbunyip Rock Hudson was considered to be one of the sexiest leading men... Hollywood HID the truth of his sexual preference bc they WANTED him to be good at being appealing.
He OBVIOUSLY was a good actor bx so many women BELIEVED he liked women.
Hiring someone to play who and what they are ISN'T acting!
Thats just being paid to be yourself.
Where can I sign up for that job!?
Oscar Wilde: A cigarette is the perfect type of a perfect pleasure. It is exquisite, and it leaves one unsatisfied. What more can one want?
I work at a store where I sell cigarettes and I've never noticed any particular race buying menthol. If anything more women buy menthol

Um....how does the general.public no comprehend second hand smoke kills innocent people?? All this time....no mention. Its boggling
Christine Emba! Love you sweet girl, so smart, good answers! I would watch you everyday
Smoking kills, therefore, add a clause to the RoevWade Alito decision that NO ONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO SMOKE IN THE PRIVACY OF THEIR OWN HOME, because life is sacred, right?
That makes zero sense. I don’t know how you posted that thinking it would.
There are already states where this exists, such as not being able to smoke in your car, or even outside, or in your home.
But like stated your point is nonsensical. What pro-lifers argue is that one cannot murder another innocent human being, no matter its age or geographical location.
If an individual wants to slowly kill themselves with alcohol or drugs, they don't say anything about the matter.
I LOVE BILL MAHER. He’s been on the top of politics for thirty plus years, never fails to discuss the average person’s issues, and as relatable as ever. ONE OF THE BEST.

This was such a good episode of the show.
The government and states aren't going after the tobacco companies to ban cigarettes because of money. The tobacco companies are still paying settlements to the federal and state governments and the money goes into programs like Medicaid. Vaping companies don't. The government is protecting the tobacco companies' market share and trying to enlarge it again. They want people smoking and dying early, especially the poor.

Laughing at the people calling this a show for Boomers. I was born in ‘94 and I think it’s great Maher brings on a variety of guests, including the ones whose views are vastly different than mine.
I think Millennials and Gen Z are so accustomed to shutting out or cancelling opposing views that they forget their views aren’t the only ones that exist in this country. It would do us all well if we got out of our echo chamber of confirmation bias. Shutting down dissent doesn’t make you right, it just makes you stupider.
I was also born in 94 and I think your just politicly ignorant.
Both of his guest were center left socially, they didn't really talk about economics.
Also how is your generalization of an entire two generations any more valid than someone's specific assessment of a single person and how there political viewers have shifted in contrast to the overtune window.
