You can't fire a Pietta Long Colt revolver without cocking the pistol and pulling the trigger. Baldwin did both. He thought the gun wasn't loaded, didn't check himself, and killed a bystander. He was responsible and the charge is not murder (which requires intent) but involuntary manslaughter, which does not.
He said he pulled back the hammer with his thumb but didn't lock it. Then when the cinematographer said that was good he let go of the hammer. He should have kept his thumb on it all the way back. That is why it fired the round. He didn't need to have his finger on the trigger.
There should never have been real ammunition on a movie set for a prop gun either. We also have the technology to not need to be in the line of fire if the gun is pointed at a camera too.
If you take your car to a mechanic to have the breaks done. And the mechanic removes the old pads but forgets to put new pads on. And you leave the shop and are unable to stop resulting in a fatal crash. You'd technically be guilty of vehicular manslaughter. However, I don't think any prosecutor would ever charge you. You paid an expert to give you a safe car, just like the movie production company paid an expert to give Alec a safe gun.
@@Im.Okay.Youre.Fucked Yes, but Baldwin was also a producer. If as a producer/car shop owner, he told employees to never test the cars brakes because it's a waste of time, even after some other incidents and employees quitting after ignored complaints about not testing/checking brakes before returning cars to customers.. yes, as that car shop owner a case could be made for manslaughter. Not saying %100 conviction, but enough for charges to be filed. Employees people quitting/threatening to quit the set due to safety concerns.

Use to like Barrie but not a fan of hers the last few years. Yes Jews are facing hate…but if you point out Israeli is doing similar things to Palestinians (not Hamas…the ones that are citizens or live in West Bank) there is some BS excuse. She won’t even have a discussion on it…neither will Bill for that matter. In general it was not too bad though.
Why is it that politicians can seem so normal on this show - can have a discussion, appear to listen, have a sense of humour - but when you put them all in the same room they cannot even say hi to each other. Are we all just being played???
Behind the scenes they all mesh and party with one another. Trump went to Chelsea Clinton's wedding. They argue on C-Span as a show for their constituents but in the end they go to the same country clubs and parties.
The reason we don't talk to each other about solutions is because of the divisive agenda the political parties foster by constantly highlighting our differences and providing reasons to fear and hate our neighbors. They know if we were to talk rationally with each other we'd come to the conclusion that we have more in common with each other than those who are supposed to be representing us and fixing problems. They can always find a way to work things out when they want to give trillion dollar tax breaks to billion aries however they can't provide clean drinking water to the people or fix broken infrastructure. They always have money for the military industrial complex but they can't afford to fix the homeless problem or provide a safe environment for our children to learn. It's easy to fix 90% of the problems if they actually cared about them however there the problems that only poor people have not the wealthy like the majority of our politicians. Peace and love to each of you.
You seem to feel it's "Both Sides' while ignoring that the Dems fought to limit Insulin cost for Medicare, which the GQP opposed - AND the tax breaks for the rich were opposed by the dems and rammed in by the GQP. The point is the majority of our politicians are beholden to their corporate masters and donors and there will never be any real problem solving until we get together and force them to change. I don't have a problem with my republican or democratic neighbors for I am also an independent we all work, go to school, shop and live our lives in the same manner. No, it's because one party is made of fascists, and they don't argue in good faith basically by definition. Their solution to everything is "the government is broken, let's break it more, to show how broken it is, and then blame the other group for it".
He really wasn't. And this is why he lost. Listen to what he said again. Everyone can agree with everything he just said, however, he gave zero possible solutions. Solutions and leadership to get change to happen is what we need. Not more status quo and placating speech.

"Insane," is the correct word. I have been asking my therapist (literally) if I am insane for more than seven years! He keeps insisting that I am not insane, it is the world that has gone crazy.
I wish I could send in a question for this week's Overtime, but I left Twitter, so apparently no can do. The comments on the Bill's HBO-sponsored blog have been disabled for so long I can't remember when, and there doesn't seem to be any other channel. I think it would be a question for Bret Stephens, but there doesn't seem to be anyone really on target for this topic this week: There is a big scandal "trending" about contaminated sushi. My theory is TikTok is driving it, and I think the Chinese can control what trends on Tiktok. Is this anti-sushi thing actually a politically motivated attack on Japan? Maybe not even China's idea? Maybe Putin asked his buddy for the help? By the way, it would be funny if the show mentioned the long-distance robbery scandal unfolding now between Japan and the Philippines. The gang apparently started as a kind of criminal telephone help desk based in the Philippines, but robbing people in Japan over the phone. Then they branched into robbery, recruiting the robbers still living in Japan via social media. The funny part was that the leaders of the gang were apparently operating the business from inside their detention center in Manila. "You can't arrest me because I'm already in jail!" The ultimate in chutzpah?
Thanks for the comments, Bill. Great accurate knock of both Democrats and Republicans reactions. “No one could ever just be reasonable, about anything,” Movies have had actors shooting at each other since the 1920's. Clearly, the issue how did live rounds get there.
As an actor, no, Alec Baldwin should not face criminal charges. The armorer should. As a producer, yes, Alec Baldwin should face charges because there is evidence that he may have been aware of the armorer’s negligence and would have been in an authority position to deal with that.
With a hammer fired gun like a revolver you could draw the hammer back enough that it doesn't latch but let go and it can strike the primer hard enough to fire the round. Not saying that's what happened, I haven't handled that particular gun before. But a possibility
Another theory : two people handled the gun before AB. One, or even both, dry fire the chamber as a last safety protocol before the hand off to AB. But there is one dud remaining in the cylinder. There is something rare called a 'delayed discharge'. That would give plausible support to AB's claim that he never pulled the trigger.
That's exactly what he said happened. He said he pulled back the hammer with his thumb but didn't lock it. Then when the cinematographer said that was good he let go of the hammer. He should have kept his thumb on it all the way back. That is why it fired the round. He didn't need to have his finger on the trigger.
That's not how movie sets work. The armourers dont even WANT actors fucking with the guns because half of them dont know what they're doing. It's literally not the actor's job.
@@celinenaville you couldn't be more wrong. EVERY SINGLE PERSON that touches a firearm om set is responsible for safety. The industry requires the training be given to EVERYONE involved. In this case, the armorer and others started the problem rolling in two VERY bad ways. 1)using working firearms on-set instead of readily available prop guns 2)having live ammo within 100 MILES of that set knowing there were real guns used in filming.
I don’t have a gas stove so just want to say it’s been kept quiet for years about the fumes they emit in the atmosphere I know friends who are heath conscience that always put them outside on patios or Lanais I believe the gas & oil companies have again been “gaslighting” us.
Thank you, I've been wondering about the Alec Baldwin thing too; it doesn't make sense to me either. He's an actor; actors pick up the guns they are given and pretend to shoot people with them -that's their job. Why would he have had reason to think it would be a problem? My question was why are there ever REAL bullets on movie sets in the first place?
1. He was also a Producer, and thus partially responsible for the corner cutting. 2. Reportedly he refused to show up for safety training. 3. You never point an actual gun at another person and pull the trigger--which the FBI said happened. There are ways to make it LOOK like you did without it actually happening. 4. This was not even a scene: it was just rehearsal. 5. Regarding poetic justice, maybe Baldwin's enthusiasm for putting Dick Cheney in jail for a hunting accident was misplaced.
Actually Brandon Lee's incident didn't involve a "real bullet" that way. They made their own dummy rounds (no armorer) for a scene and one of them actually partially fired and the bullet was stuck in the barrel. Later, when they used it with blanks, the blank propelled the shell and...

I can answer the question, Bari: Armists shave the triggers to make sure the hero NEVER looks like they're straining to pull the trigger. Something similar happened to me at a theme park wild west show. He is innocent.
Who was the ARMORER ... not ARMIST by the way? Do you have any clue about what you are talking about? Doesn't seem like it. The ARMORER was uinion, and the union had walked off because of abuses on the set, including the staff playing with the guns. When they left Management, which included Alec Baldwin, decided to continue filming with a person pretending to be an armorer but did not know what they were doing.
People can talk all the smack they want about him, but Bill Maher’s a Good Dude. He has a heart, and he has a brain, and he believes in engaging both of them in his exploration of life. F*ck Yeah, Man.
I think the Alec Baldwin thing is another distraction. Largely due to the fact who put the live ammo in the gun? Why was there any live ammo anywhere near the set? Who put the live ammo in the gun?? This is the number one question.

I find it absurd how they tied people crossing the border to fentanyl like that. It's all part of the "illegal immigrants are coming to kill us" FUD. If *zero* people tried to cross the border all year, the people making billions off of it would just use a different means to bring it in. We don't have a fentanyl problem because of illegal immigration. We have a fentanyl problem because we have gobs of addicts, which come from a crappy healthcare system and lack mental health resources.
Alec isn't charged with intentionally shooting anyone, he's charged with being negligent in that he owed a duty of care to those around him when handling the weapon, even if someone else handed it to him, and that he breached that duty of care and it led to a death. That's what the jury will decide.
In every place I've been where firearms are in use, guns are always treated as loaded and like they could misfire at any moment. It's rare but firearms do malfunction, and what's exiting the barrel isn't always only sole danger. All of this talk about "he didn't squeeze the trigger" just highlights the lack of understanding and respect for firearm safety - and no one on the panel seems to get this (except maybe Bari). I think an expert firearms witness could pick apart this argument handily. Imagine if Hollywood used real deactivated warheads but called them props. That's effectively what a "prop gun" is.
Since Baldwin put up some of his own money, to make the film, he was named an executive producer. It was purely a formality, as he had no role in actual production tasks, and there were other producers who really did that work. It certainly doesn't make him responsible for this accident. If it did, why weren't any of the other producers charged?
-Baldwin rediscovered, tragically, the literal origin of the Metaphore "Going off half-cocked" the hammer could rest on the firing pin but would then take a full pull (slower in an urgent situation) or instead be already 1/2 way cocked but slip out and sometimes strike the firing pin just hard enough to fire. This was "designed out" of modern pistols.
I watched the segments in the full episode uploaded by some random guy. I don't know they didn't upload them on the official channel though (New Rules, Monologue, etc)
Bari Weiss once referred to Tulsi Gabbard, an active-duty Army officer at the time, as "the motherload of bad ideas" and "an Assad Toadie" on the Joe Rogan Podcast during the 2020 presidential campaign. When pressed by Joe Rogan about the meaning of "toadie," Weiss stumbled and fumbled her words. A Columbia-educated journalist couldn't answer the simple question when asked what "toadie" meant. This happened because Gabbard opposed US intervention during the "Syrian Civil War," in which the United States supported terrorist groups (i.e., rebels linked to ISIS) that wanted to overthrow Assad.
Bill is always so funny as he pushes ahead on crucial issues. Just wish he’d say some good things about Dems so we can keep the autocrats out. Great guests.
Bill wasted Frances Haugen in this episode. In the beginning of the show, he admitted to being glad for having a social media expert on because it's a subject he knew little about, and most of what he did was just whine at her and tried to look for some kind of confirmation to his own bias.
@@midnightrun2764 Age and crankiness. Bill looks and sounds like a cranky grandpa whining and shaking his fist at the world. While the jokes themselves might be funny, his delivery is not.
If Alec Baldwin did his job as a producer or whatever his official position was, maybe he would have paid attention to the multiple complaints of crew, including multiple crews walking off set/production due to safety complaints of unsafe firearms practices, which were ignored.
Did Baldwin know that that day 9 people quit? And they did complain about safety, but their main complaint was that their hotel was in Albuquerque and they had to drive an hour to and from the set everyday when their contract said they would be in local hotels. Their safety complaint was that they were tired and they feared they would make mistakes in their job. As a retired attorney I'm paying close attention to this case. The amount of no information or misinformation that people get and decide their fate is astounding. I've seen this repeatedly in my career. I'm curious why more wasn't done by the police to determine to find out who brought the bullets onto the set. (Police claim there were too many finger prints and they don't have the manpower to go through everyone and even if they could, it would be impossible to determine who brought the bullets). But if I was Baldwin with all his money, that is what I would try to focus on.
Killing someone by accident still deserves accountability. That’s why manslaughter was created as a charge. Actors can check their weapons to see if they are loaded. They are encouraged to do so. And producers should make sure they are running a safe set. So he has two reasons to be accountable.
Bill, what you need to do, is to convince HBO to upload the entire episodes of real time on RUclips for free. Believe me when I tell you that the show can be downloaded for free, by anyone that knows what torrents are. HBO has a responsibility to not have this show behind a pay-wall. It's too important for that. Educating people like this, should be free for everyone. They payback is more valuable than wealth.
4:10 Sorry, Bari, but guns _can_ fire without pulling a trigger. The question isn't why he pulled the trigger - he was rehearsing a scene in which he pulls the trigger, duh - the question is why were there live rounds on set, and why did the armorer pass him a gun with love rounds?

No that is an inaccurate and disingenuous comment. Yes the current Israeli government sucks and is below acceptable in many practices and they deserve criticism in many areas however they are not guilty of actual apartheid and inaccurately categorizing it as such doesn't help anyone.
@@hdd1977m7 There isn't two sets of laws. The Alec Baldwin thing is insane. The fact that they had a gun on the set that is capable of firing a lethal round means that Alec Baldwin acted negligently.
The comments on the Bill's HBO-sponsored blog have been disabled for so long I can't remember when, and there doesn't seem to be any other channel. I think it would be a question for Bret Stephens, but there doesn't seem to be anyone really on target for this topic this week:
There is a big scandal "trending" about contaminated sushi.
"You can't arrest me because I'm already in jail!" With a hammer fired gun like a revolver you could draw the hammer back enough that it doesn't latch but let go and it can strike the primer hard enough to fire the round. Not saying that's what happened, I haven't handled that particular gun before. But a possibility
true
Another theory : two people handled the gun before AB. One, or even both, dry fire the chamber as a last safety protocol before the hand off to AB. But there is one dud remaining in the cylinder. There is something rare called a 'delayed discharge'. That would give plausible support to AB's claim that he never pulled the trigger.
Or : AB's finger was inside the trigger guard and touched (not pulled) a 'hair trigger'.
That's exactly what he said happened. He said he pulled back the hammer with his thumb but didn't lock it. Then when the cinematographer said that was good he let go of the hammer. He should have kept his thumb on it all the way back. That is why it fired the round. He didn't need to have his finger on the trigger.
In this case, the FBI forensics report said that a non-trigger misfire for this gun would be impossible.

Exactly. Prop gun or not. If it "can" be used as a deadly weapon - it is a deadly weapon.
That's not how movie sets work. The armourers dont even WANT actors fucking with the guns because half of them dont know what they're doing. It's literally not the actor's job.
This is why he is being charged with involuntary manslaughter. He shot someone to death. It's up to a jury or plea deal to decide now.
@@celinenaville you couldn't be more wrong. EVERY SINGLE PERSON that touches a firearm om set is responsible for safety. The industry requires the training be given to EVERYONE involved.

We need restrictions like an Ellis Island where they are checked and sent back if they don't meet standards.
