just changed this gasket on my 2003 mach 1 two days ago.Well, I started 3days ago. I didnt know about all these informative vids until yesterday. I bought the gasket "for the mach1 " from a rival parts house that starts with the letter A and has the letter "z" in it also. Just for Everyone's knowledge, the FELPRO gasket package for the mach 1 is labeled for the GT and the GT is labeled for the Mach1. the GT coolant passage is smaller and shaped differently. This is why you just need to order the one from LMR. I have finally found a company that I can trust for the correct parts the first time. And Customer Service is Amazing
damn now I'm worried I got the wrong one for the Navigator, it has the same engine in 5.4 displacement which one is the older one, that's probably mine since its an '02. I ordered from Amazon, even cheaper than A___Z___. mine is the four valve like the mach 1, I don't think there were any two valve navigators so maybe I'm good.
Put this off till I walked out to the car today and seen a line of oil coming into my drive way right where it be located and came In watched this video and now here we are
This is a SERIOUS do not put off, if you put it off, CHECK YOUR OIL CONSTANTLY, and you're still at risk. WHY: This engine has 32 valves, (svt and mach 1, and old navigators), 16 for GT, each with its own hydraulic lash adjuster and roller follower (rocker). They ALL need full oil pressure to stay firm against the camshaft. At the point the leak in your gasket gets bad enough to drain your oil too low, OR allow air bubbles to be sucked IN on the intake port, air will be pumped to these adjusters, allowing your followers to bounce on your cam. You'll start to hear ticks as your needle bearings in the roller followers get red-hot and deform, and the case hardened faces of the follower and camshaft get scored to hell. Its a pretty major repair. All because of a damn 8 dollar gasket.
Just for everyone's info on the 1996 and 1997 Cobra it is not this easy. There is a oil cooler that has to come off also and once removed the O-rings have to be replaced and LMR doesn't sale those o-rings.
Have a question for you hope you could answer it I have a 1995 Lincoln Town Car with a 4.6 L in there and the oil filter housing is leaking from where the oil cooling lines can I delete the oil cooler will it be safe for my vehicle
Just did this on a 96 T-Bird, sooooooooo much more difficult. The cross member basically cradles the adapter and the swap bar is just a cock block. I found removing the battery, overflow tank and moving the fusebox gave me great room up top and with the little peek a boo hole above the frame in the driver wheel well and with the help of a 2ft extension and a swivel 10mm (MANDATORY for both) I managed to win.
Ooh, "great". I have to tackle my '97 Thunderbird's tomorrow. I assume the placement is the same? I remember how hard it was replacing just the lower radiator hose a few months ago. Sheesh! Wish me luck.
Yeah, it's in the same place, just more cramped. Oh, and my 96 had a different oil pressure switch connection just one wire, a red gooseneck looking thing, It took me a min to figure out how to remove it because I was afraid of breaking it, but it's pretty sturdy just use a pair of needle-nose pliers to pull it off the stud. Good Luck Friend!
Done. I'm going to test it in a little while. I liken the experience to building a boat model in a bottle - an opaque dirty bottle. Took me three hours to remove it and about an hour to replace it. I hope it does not continue to leak or give me a "check engine" light on. Ha-ha.
I need help! Plz! I just did this on my 1998 mustang GT. It has the oil cooler. I took the oil cooler off first and then the adapter plate and replaced the gasket. When I went and started my car, EVERY BIT of oil that I had just put in the car and was in the oil pan started pouring out from underneath the car around the area I was working. And I mean POURING out. Like all 6 quarts
Just a heads up if you dont already know, this design is different feom mine. I have a 97 cobra and its way harder than this video made it look. 1st bolt is easy, 2nd and third bolt you have to guide a swivel through a very tight space w an extension, 4th bolt is behind the filter where it rounds out and seems almost impossible to take it out, i gave up. Looks like id rather have a coolant leak until i fully dissasemble and rebuild it..
Daniel Ashworth yeh i tried to get my gasket out last night.fail.and i took power steering pump off.i got the three in line bolts out of adapter.but couldnt get last one out, i have 97 gt. Do u have any help???
So, the 1992-99 modular engine has a completely different gasket. It has a different shape and the large port is not the same either. You may want to update your listing and offer the early gasket for proper fitment. The part number for the older engines also does not supersede to the newer.
Will this work with a 1997 mustang gt or do I have to buy a the oil cooler version my whole housing needs to be replaced it cracked while putting a new oil sensor in on my fault
How long of a bolt did you use? I was told it was M8x1.25 40mm, but that seems way too long (and I couldn't get them started, so I wanted to doublecheck, hence my asking)
Ivan - Search around on eBay and look for a nice take-off oil filter adapter from a 1996-2004 Mustang 4.6L 2V. Other adapters from different Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles may work, but there are plenty of used Mustang oil filter adapters out there. -Landan

I have a 2001 Ford Mustang Cobra. Mine is not that streamlined to remove. There is not enough clearance for a socket on the front 3 bolts in between the power steering pump and the oil cooler housing. I am currently in the process of doing this procedure as I type this.
Larry, I am sorry that you are having issues with this install. We did this one on a 2V GT and this install can be a tad easier on these models over the Cogra 4V in some cases.
Anybody have a clue how to get to that fourth bolt on a '96 Mustang? I cannot get a hand, finger, socket or wrench on it from any directiion! It looks like Ford really made this thing easy to manufacture but not easy to repair. Any thoughts?

If you own a 98 f150 you'll have to remove the motor mount to to remove the housing and gasket. Took me longer than 3 hrs. Of course the 99 model they didn't run the housing through the motor mount. Lol
I have a 98 F150 and I am replacing the gasket now and it is a pain in the butt. I had to remove mount and raise the engine to change gasket out. Make sure you snug all four bolts and then tighten them up.
Does anybody have any tips on removing the hose from the oil filter housing? mine is practically glued togther with grime and am just looking to speed the process up
If you feel like the lower radiator hose needs to be replaced, just cut it and remove the short section of the hose once the oil filter adapter housing is removed from the engine block. Hassling with trying to remove the stuck hose could cause enough damage where you would have to replace the hose regardless. -Landan
