I replaced the valve cover and spark plug gaskets on my 2001 2.4L 4 Cyl Tacoma a year ago.
I used a bit of black RTV along with the gasket just to make sure I didn't get any leaks. Probably wasn't necessary but gave me peace of mind.

Thank you for taking the time to make a well produced video. However I would like to add a caveat
I don't know what car you're working on but I am looking at replacing the oil pan on my old 1996 Mercedes-Benz SL 500
There the manual specifically states that you put the gasket on dry
And other people on a Mercedes website have shown me what happens when you put silicone or RTV on their gaskets and it happens to seep through the gasket into the oil
On the screen on the oil pump there's all kinds of bits of RTV sitting on the screen
Maybe this is the procedure for the particular car you're working on; I certainly don't question your expertise
I'm just saying that that is not standard for every car
On the Mercedes like a transmission pan you torque the bolts properly and you should have no leaks on a dry gasket

Hey, I can tell you if you havnt done it yet.....you need special tools that hold cam in certain position and whatnot. If its an interference engine it is not worth the chance of getting timing off a tooth or so ....Some Auto Zone's and other parts stores rent and loan the special tools for the job. Good Luck. (I did my BMW 740i myself about 2 years back. The special tool kit was $100 on Amazon but chains and tensioners OEM were $800! Some BMW dealers get up to $5,000 for that job!

Today I will be installing the oil pan on a Mercedes 560SL that I am rebuilding. RTV or no RTV on a paper gasket has haunted me. 99% of oil pan replacement videos on RUclips use tons of RTV. The manual doesn’t mention RTV use at all and the manufacturers of paper gaskets say to never use RTV. This is one of the most controversial topics. Why can’t mechanics agree on anything?

If it's a situation when the gasket gravitates towards its daddy, the earth, I will apply the correct type and amount of silly cone gasket. (Gasket uhtastic) all day long, a great approach and skill set for the best mechanical bond possible and without inevitable gasket laying fails leading to a dead seal.

The design and fit of the oil pan, dented to allow the exhaust to pass under, and just barely flush with the transmission shows how an engineer can model up a cool looking design in CAD, which is a mother f'er to service.

0:38 sorry RNR, I call BS: leaking oil does not cause bolts to vibrate loose, otherwise they would not use bolts inside the crankcase! Loose bolts on a Honda is usually caused by loss of clamping force due to gasket creep or embedding/ thread deformation. The gasket material looses clamping force as it ages, and out of spec bolts can deform over time.... causing loss of clamping force.
