I think I’m like you, fell in love with survival after seeing Rambo and survival books. I got into your stuff with the hunger games book (mcguyver/primitive/urban/wilderness) bla bla bla. Coolest stuff ever. I just subbed to your survival notebook and got the first pack of the ones already printed. Wow best idea ever. Thanx for trying to share all this stuff with the world. You’re awesome cool beans.

Right to the point. And one point being using the ferro rod to nail down the tinder bundle. The only thing I would point out to the newbies is to remove that stupid black coating found on a lot of ferro rods. It's an anti-oxygen to deter rust. Go figure. As far as strikers go... anything harder than the ferro rod will do. Keys will do fine,

I've purchased hundreds of dollars in ferro rods over the past 10 years... Expensive ones, cheaper ones (China) and everyone in between.... Firesteel.com sell quality ferro rods also. I've found that you get what you pay for even with ferro rods..... I own at least 50 5-6 inch rods and several small ones... Quality rods take a strike or two to start even marginal tinder, yet cheaper rods take a lot more strikes with the same tinder...... I build a couple fires every day year round and go through a couple 1/2 by 6 inch rods a year, even more with cheaper ones.. It rarely takes more than a couple strikes with fatwood or birch bark, but anyone should have no problem starting either tinder with a good ferro rod..... Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience on this topic with us, I appreciate it sir.

I'm really curious about how many strikes are in one of these. Sounds like a side project for Jake.
