Louie Simmons is widely regarded as the 'Strength Coaches', Strength Coach' and is the founder of the world-renowned gym called Westside Barbell in Columbus, Ohio.
Westside Barbell is an invitation-only training laboratory where only the strongest of mind and body survive. Our goal is simple: “To become the best and push every boundary known to man in doing so.”
This gym has produced more world records in powerlifting than any other in the World, and Louie has been regarded as one of the main reasons that the conjugate style of training has been popularized in today's training methods.
Outside of powerlifting, Louie is a strength consultant for many NFL, NBA, MBA teams, along with having trained gold medal sprinters, pro boxers, UFC fighters, and many more athletes out of his gym via the conjugate method of strength training.

PEOPLE MUST UNDERSTAND you never get this level of information from a “coach” without being on his team. And it’s on your tube FREE. God Bless this man
Thanks for the comment !
Freakin luv this - mind blown - I see the matrix code now…
And he's arguably the best powerlifting coach in history and coached athletes in a large diversity of sports. This crane operator who had PhDs and pro strength and conditioning coaches come to learn from him. RIP
real
This stuff is in books 📚 I learned a this without going to a channel . Bigger faster stronger in high-school taught this an I learned more about in books . No coach required
I feel so stupid when I listen to Louie speak, he just understands things on a completely different level. I have to listen again and when it finally settles in, I'm completely blown away. He's a genius.
💪
This guy is my hero
Same here
I just started lifting weights at 43 years old
Better late than never
This man is a LEGEND
He is like the Wise man on the mountain.
Right on brother, better late than never keep kicking ass.
I’ve done tire pulls for years. Cheap set up. Outside , fresh air. Get an old tire and a strap, fill with rocks or dead bodies
Walk!
I don't know nothing about them bodies if anyone asks.
@@ShawnJonesHellionme neither.
Louie made so much sense. Get ready for anything is the plain and simple message but only Louie will take you there seamlessly. All he needs is payment in blood.
In my humble opinion, that destroyer from the top of the ladder through the table is the best spot ive ever seen. The balls to do it, the execution, and nobody got hurt. Amazing stuff
God bless you guys! 🙏
I remember when you had to buy a VHS tape to hear Louie speak.
A man way ahead of his time, RIP 😢
The good old days when we had PLUSA to read
This is gold...
Outstanding knowledge 🙌🏼🙌🏼👍🙏🏻
official grandpa dropping gems as usual
Very good! My understanding of GPP came from what I read from the
"'Soviets Sports Review", Dr. Yessis (Michael Yessis) consults and what
I read in the "Charniga translations" of Soviet Weightlifting theory. Not just
"fitness" but "coordination, speed, etc." I saw the USSR volleyball team in the '80s
(1987 specifically) in the old LA Laker forum in Inglewood, Ca. as part of a "round-robin"
tournament. In the finals, the Soviets came out, and their warm-up looked like a "circus"
-Walking on hands, Back Flips, Foward Flips, and then execute a "skill" (such as a "dig").
Except for the "setter" who would "windmill" one arm going in one direction and the other arm
going the other at the same time and then switch!
.
Priceless info by Louie rip
Louie seems like such a likable and genuine guy. I would die for such a mentor. Very much appreciated🙏
Thank you
Hahah he was evidently quite the opposite in real life. A great man and an amazing coach but he was notorious for being very hard, stubborn and aggressive but it worked for Westside Barbell. It's not Planet Fitness after all 😂
@@McCarthy1776 I would rather have a tough coach rather than a soft one . Makes me work harder to meet his expectations . Like my Dad lol
Got to love Louis
Its Louie..
Its in the title man.
I love listening to Louie talk shop. We're not powerlifting but we do try to implement conjugate methods combined with GPP, J.C. Santana's linear methods and the findings of Dr. Kraemer's non-linear studies. It ain't perfect but we're definitely on to something.
J.C Santana is much more coherent though than Simmons.
No comparison.
Functional training. This is the good stuff.
Brilliant
Such good info
Great stuff
Thank you
You gotta listen to this guy
St Peter welcomed Louie at the Pearly gates and announced, "we're having a deadlift contest!,get your ass in here 😊
Too good
This is great stuff.
I work with some guys that farm also. They are strong too! They don’t lift weights but lots of physical labor!
Thanks for this Excellent video . My question is I am a trail runner how would the workouts look like ie. frequency and duration. listening to Louie it's like a living encyclopedia of info.
Are you talking about using conjugate to structure your running workouts? Or how to use weight training to benefit your running?
@@MaddTrapper-gn8qs The latter weight training to compliment the running.
Louis is the “MAN”‼️‼️‼️‼️
Louie Simmons.
The Cus D'Amato of lifting, and Cus is the Louie of boxing
👌
does anyone know where I can buy a program where I can build GPP from scratch the right way? Thanks! Thank you very much westside barbell for sharing so much great content!
If you train as a lifter I’d recommend Matt wennings channel for GPP workouts, he trained under Louie at westside. Search wenning warm ups on YT if you’re still looking, found them pretty helpful getting in shape personally (and it’s free)
8weeksout maybe
Love Louie
all efficiency matters
Good ole Louie..the man
Absolutely
So from what Louie is saying in this video, can you do GPP as warm ups before your max effort lifts?
No, you'd want a specific warmup i.e. hip extension for squat or deadlift. The nature of gpp is not specific
Didnt Tia Claire Toomey goto the Olympics in Weightlifting?
I wish Louie would make more videos! I'd like to know what Lou recommends for healing rotator cuff issues
Banded pull aparts and super high rep band work.
Go over to Donnie Thompson's page.
He talked about that. Lot of bamboo bar, battling rope/chain, indian clubs, etc..
Look up podcast 21 with John Quint
Garage gym thoughts?
🙏🙏🙏
So what would a GPP be for a soccer player? At first he said GPP should not be far off from the sport. I know I can use GPP as I get tired during a weight training workout.

You down with GPP?
Yeah You Know Me
Did Big Lou say K BOX? (Kbox4 Platform)
Correct
Gpp book???
I don't have the money or space for a sled, I wonder what Louie thinks of hill sprints as a similar alternative (if not a substitute)
I’ve heard him say it’s not sport specific for powerlifting, you could get an old tire or something but they sell sleds for cheap $80 I think. The guy from 531 talks about hill sprints though, I think great for gpp prob but not if your going for huge total
kettelbells are great for gpp
@TurboBaner more then sprinting, u can load a sled. Moving heavy objects, it like doing a heavy leg curl.
@TurboBaner I would thing strengthening the hamstring is yes. What kind of work do u do to get your deadlifts up? Have u actually tried these things? I have, it Works.
@TurboBaner dude this is a thread on westside. If u follow there stuff Louie recommends sled drags and has said that sprints are not useful to a power lifter. Everything else your arguing is semantics. I’m quoting things I’ve heard him say. Go listen to all the podcasts, buy the book of methods and get back to me.
Isn't it strange that GPP came on the Westside channel , here 6 days ago . Then on the Super Training channel 4 days ago??! 🤨
Are you saying anyone who talks about GPP is ripping off Westside?
I thought the 3 week pendulum wave %ages were 75/80/85........they just keep going up lol
Yea cuz they're getting faster
What would a football driven gpp program look like?
idk
prowler, sled, wheelbarrow!
@@Sealed_Chamber "IDK", is that some kind of exercise? Is there a Titan Fitness machine I can buy for that exercise? How much of the stack should start with? Sets/reps?
@@ResistanceQuest Yeah.
@@Sealed_Chamber oh, nice
“GPP is general pacific.” What did he mean by this
Love Louie, but geez I can't understand half of what he says. Either he's talking too fast or changes his train of thought in mid sentence. Still, the man is fascinating.
listen faster!!!

I am a Spanish speaker and I can understand him. Protect your ears.
So what kinda warmup does Louie recommend? He says it’s worthless to warm up and then a couple minutes later he talks about being fatigued from his warmup before squats
He specifically said to warmup with the movement you're doing. lol He said the people doing all the crazy drills, foam rolling and stuff was not needed.
@@jividenpower8195 this. Also sled dragging. Treat your extra workout as your warm up.
@@ZaneGeeting So basically do GPP work as your warm-ups before doing your heavy singles for ME lower or upper day?
@@bobbydenezza7795 I'm not speaking for Lou here (RIP) but I have trained conjugate for a long time, and Lou took time to help me on several different occasions. I like to pick 3 or 4 exercises for my weak points and hit them for a few high rep sets before my main movement. Right now I drag a sled backwards, do reverse hypers, and banded hamstring curls. I do them as a circuit for 3-4 rotations.
@@jividenpower8195 by drills you mean a/b/c skip, heel to butt etc?
What’s a whirl whirl??
Don't quote me. but I believe that he meant "Wheel Barrow"
@@DaveFrazier69420 haha really
@@keithlittle293 for sure. In their podcast I’ve heard him talk about different wheel barrow exercises. He loves em.
@@DaveFrazier69420 I was laughing cos I heard whirl whirl..
Wheel barrow would make a ton more sense
@@keithlittle293 agreed. He totally said whirl whirl. And everyone walked right by it like “... right. Let’s not question Lou, I’m sure whirl whirl is great”
1:50 by definition 25 reps with 80%1RM or an 8RM, is NOT 80% because it isn't an 8RM, but a 25 RM.
55% bar weight 25% accommodating resistance.
It’s bar weight and bands combined to make 80%. Way different than 80% straight weight
Shit, it doesn't matter how the external load is composed. If you're getting 25 reps with it, it's not 80% RM period. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. To do so is like insisting the earth is flat or denying gravity.
@@boxerfencer 'gravity', the glue that sticks all the none sense lies together.
You can have better sound than that guys
What is some gpp stuff for ice hockey
Sled walks (lateral)
I don’t understand 20 reps @ 80%
That was done as an experiment. 1 set of 20 reps for speed strength. The lifters were able to maintain the same speed for each rep. A high level of GPP is required to be able to do this.
How tall is a pyramid.
idk
As tall as its base is wide. It's what louie always says about GPP. It's the base. You won't become great without GPP
@@louisl1616 Thank you.
Louie, Love you stuff. BUT, you are wrong about the transferability to competition from GPP to another sport. When you were talking about CrossFit, Tia Clair Toomey 4x Fittest Woman on earth, went to the Common Wealth Games for Australia, and won GOLD in weightlifting, in the middle of a CrossFit season.... She also just a couple days ago announced she is now going to join Team Australia Bobsled to qualify for the Olympics, just a couple months after winning her 4th CONSECUTIVE CrossFit games title. It CAN be done.
You’re talking about a freak though.
Women sports on the whole are highly uncompetitive especially niche sports like these. Tia with her fitness advantage can just overpower most competition.
Extreme genetic outliers are always the exception and never the rule.
The standard to represent Australia in bobsleigh is pretty low.
Even I was only $$$ to go to America for a year away from making our team ~10 years ago, and about the only qualifying standard was that you were willing to move overseas lol
But Claire is juiced to the gills
Is interviewer Irish?
The Thomas Edison of power lifting.
my gym is push up anywhere
0 thumbs down
I wish he didn’t talk so gosh damn fast
Am I the only lab rat that thought GPP was a supplement? I will WILINGLY do whatever it takes...☣️ Yes!...Yes...YESS! 😳😶😑😳 Oh ya of course not, I knew that....well I figured... probably wouldn't have done it anyway.... 🤕😔😔😭
So wrong with his logic about rest times
I really am enjoying this, but I wonder when he says it's the Bulgarian athletes mental toughness vs the judgement of the team trainer. It's a really subjective way to make a point and therefore suss.
