      @@mrkos87 I like the scene because it shows you very clearly for the first time what the main commentary of the movie is. But I don't really like how the film starts to take a comedic tone in the second act... not my cup of tea really!

      @@LegalVampire I think the point of the movie was to trip you out so you couldn't really figure out what was going on. that's why the tone kept changing (even the scene when they're in the water tower was a completely different tone). I think it was just meant to be random

      @@mrkos87 Badly written ? It looks like we didn't watch the same movie, The unpredicatable plot, the themes, the characters and villains arcs, the dialogues, the layers of horror, nothing is badly written in this movie.
      We need more movies of that level of quality.
      This movie will be talked about 10 to 50 years from now, it is so good it is timeless like Men, X, Get Out, Midsommar, Hereditary, The Conjuring, The Ring(2002), Halloween(the first one), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre(1974), A Nightmare On El Street or Friday the 13th to name a few other timeless gems.

    Yall I got to watch this last night at an Alamo Drafthouse early screening...every horror fan on the planet needs to go see this. Not because it's the best horror movie ever made but because it's maybe one of the most fun viewing experiences in recent years and it's so incredibly shocking and very unpredictable. It's an absolute blast and I HOPE it's a box office hit.

    Just my opinion but It lost me when I thought about how nutrition works, how gravity works (water tower), and some really stupid decisions by the main characters. To be fair, they acted fairly realistic for once while still overall making bad decisions. The twists were clever but not mind blowing.

    I saw this movie today and I have to admit I do not get the glowing reviews its getting. I guess im missing something because I thought it was quite awful. The 1st act was tense but then you get to the big twist and the movie fell off a cliff for me. Would have rather they stuck with the original idea they teased before the twist. There was one particular part in the movie that had something to do with a bottle and I almost walked out. It was painfully bad. Other than maybe 2 jump scares there was nothing that scary about the film. I had high hopes for it so yeah I am a bit perplexed, not at all what I thought.

      Dead on, I’m seriously beginning to think these people giving the reviews and the videos were paid off or something lol. Every review is like “OMG there are so many twists and turns and OMG!” Um, there’s really not. This movie is so overhyped it’s ridiculous. Like you, I loved the first 30 mins/1st act, great tension between Skarsgaard and the main girl then it gets ridiculous and corny. You can’t make a horror movie and continue to throw in humor, give me one or the other. I was hoping Skarsgaard was ultimately a bad dude and was going to mess with the girl down there but not make it obvious he was. Instead we got something stupid. Oh well!

    I saw this today. It was an unpredictable wild ride with sudden tone shifts, that can take you out of the film, but I loved them. They added to the mystery. I believe this is Tarantino's gift the film industry: mixing and matching tones, light and dark, comedy neighboring evil. It does take a deft hand to pull it off. I also like how the film played against type, against expectations, of the two male characters, Bill Skarsgard and Justin Long. There is a moment in the final scene that completely shocked me. I'll leave it there, go watch it.

    I saw it tonight. WOW!!!! It was a cool experience. I love that there was no CGI. Character development was fantastic and it took a few twists that weren't easy to figure out right away. I like that it took it's time building tension, but I do think the overall run length was it's achilles heel if it had one. 3/5 stars!!!!

    This movie was original and a good time! I watch it twice and I have a theory that Tess's job interview, Keith, the rope connecting the basement, the AJ's assault, the homeless man and the police are all an elaborate scam. I hope there is a prequel or sequel to this movie because I have some loose ends I want to answer! For example, who's Marcus? who posted the house on Airbnb? Should have the police officers called back-up or ask her for her ID? This movie is an example that horror movies are cautionary tales!! Will watch again!

    The only concern for me is from the trailer, it feels like a jump scare fest, and though I LOVE good, well-built horror, I ABHOR jump scares. To me a jump scare sets off my anxiety more than any sense of fear or horror, and ruins the experience (then again, I also have a hyper-sensitivity disorder, so it may just be a "me thing").

    The structure of the film kind of suggested (to me) a subverted Psycho plot. Like, it kind of did that midpoint protagonist change, with Protagonist #1 being taken out of commission and Protagonist #2 following up on what the first went through.

  • @kaycuz9402
    @kaycuz9402 2 года назад +5

    Just saw it. First act was great but man it absolutely kills its own vibe when it cuts away. It never regains that initial momentum and that one character (Long) kinda tramples all over everything they took the time to set up. It turns really goofy after that which maybe is what they were going for but the tone set by the beginning was way better than the rest of the movie.

      Totally agree! I was really let down, especially after Emma gave it such high praise for being so scary! I left the theater going, THIS is what scares the girl whose top five includes Martyrs? It’s not that it was bad, not at all. In fact I really enjoyed it and will probably watch again later with different expectations and see what I think after some time has passed.

      Jump scares hardly ever get me because I don’t get startled easy. But god DAMN did this movie make me jump. I actually covered my mouth at one point. I don’t like movies that rely on jump scares because they’re just not my thing at all. Nope is the only other film that had such a legit jump scare that I almost screamed. But otherwise, most jump scares are cheap.

    Saw it today and I loved it! I may have overhyped myself and kept thinking of the craziest and whackiest scenarios that could happen, but the reveal of what was going on didn’t match up to my expectations… in the best way! It was pretty original and effective. There were times I was thinking, “I shouldn’t be scared… yet here I am shielding my eyes and looking through my fingers” And then at the ending, I found myself speechless. What I particularly like most about the film was how the moments that should be silly and dumb we’re actually pulled off as straight scary because of the acting, it wasn’t over the top B-movie acting despite the b-movie elements. And I also liked how even though there was nothing particularly scary that’ll keep me up at night, the way the themes and situations were presented made me think about how disturbingly real they can be.

  • @mikail9224
    @mikail9224 Год назад +2

    *spoilers-*
    I am just not understanding all the love this film is getting… plodding script, wrecked tension, not funny… some decent acting from Georgina and some cool music moments but that was it. This movie was almost as bad as “Us” for me. The plot “twist” was… just something that had happened in the house? Or was the twist supposed to be it wasn’t Skaarsgaard? His unbelievable lines gave that away… I’m also normally a jumpy person and any tension I felt building was destroyed with how they chose to edit and tell the story. It just was not scary at all?
    I guess this movie wasn’t “made for me” as someone who doesn’t enjoy comedy horror. So disappointing!

  • @WJames-vk2kp
    @WJames-vk2kp 2 года назад

    The reveal is not a unique horror trope in the least, BUT it's executed incredibly well. The camera work, musical score, and lighting combined to create an intense and anxiety-inducing experience. The pacing was like being on a rollercoaster.
    Do I think it might be a tad overhyped based on critic and audience reviews? Yes, but it's still one of the better horror movies I've seen lately. It felt...polished.

      Bertha was the insane wife that the Jane's love interest, Mr. Rochester, kept locked in the attic. Jane would be woken up in the middle of the night from doors opening/weird sounds, like Tess, believing the place was haunted. So when you see the copy of Jane Eyre, I figured it must have been a husband keeping a wife prisoner in the home.
      Another weird fact: Rochester is blinded in the end of the novel by Bertha, just like AJ!
