But generally what I find is that if you drive everyday and your battery is in good health. I do know some vehicles that will get a solid 16 hours with a 3 channel which is even more current draw then listed but those are generally 2 battery vehicles like a Diesel truck.

Excellent video. Strightward, clear and easy to understand! Appreciate if you can test and tell me the parking mode current draw for the "GKU M11 4K mirror dash cam". Many thanks.
I'm getting a dashcam soon and just came across an OBD cable which I was not aware of. It's definitely intriguing to me as I was going to hardwire it anyway
1. Thanks for info. Really wish there was a DashCamSolutions in Southern California. 2. I just bought hybrid CRV & hear there are issues with dashcam & battery specific to hybrids. What are your thoughts. 3. Would eliminating parking mode be the best option? Thanks in advance.
Our plan is to grow that big. Currently only in Canada. :) . Well you could eliminate parking mode or you could get a battery pack for dedicated parking mode, or lastly look at a energy saving mode dash camera like Thinkware U3000, U1000, or F790.
Hi @SafeDriveSolutions, question, for the 3-wire hardwire kit, how does it tell the dashcam when accessory has been turned off. Is the interface smart that it transmits data into the usb data line or does the SOURCE power supply just switch from accessory to constant 12v ?
@@SafeDriveSolutions sorry this talks about how to wire up the fuse box side. What I'm after is what happens to the USB side when turning from key-off to key-accessory.
My dash cam has an internal battery. What would be the purpose of this, if I have it hardwired for constant power? Should I wire it to turn off with the ignition? Yes, it has motion detection, and impact. Parking mode must be turned on manually after you have stopped. I thing the motion detection only works with the front camera. When it comes on, I don't know if the rear camera records or not?
We do not sell any dash cameras with an internal battery. Can not fully comment on it. But I will say most of those batteries do not last long at all. Some of the units we have read in the manuals they last 10 minutes.
*I find a lot of dashcam comes prebuilt with a unit that cuts off at 11.6V and there's no way to change it... But I find that way too low and my power always dies. When I was using a Power Magic Pro with a Blackvue, I could manually set the cutoff at 12V and my car never drained to the point I couldn't start the ignition.*
Hi, first thank you for the excellent videos, I purchased the Viofo 119 V3 and use it on my 2013 CRV 2 weeks ago with a cigarette lighter that is "ignition based". You mentioned lighters without ignition based feature but not the ignition based cigarette lighter. My questions is, my dash cam turns off after I turn off the ignition. Do I still need to disconnect the "ignition based" cigarette lighter when I get home? BTW I purchased the Viofo A229 Duo with the HK4, but I have not installed it yet. I plan to have a professional install it. Will you plan to test the current draw for the Viofo dash cams? If there a local Safe Drive solution site I would visit but there is not. Thanks for the great video!
I have tested current draw about a month ago and it is same as Thinkware and IROAD dash cams. If your cigarette lighter is ignition controlled you do not need to worry about it at all. It is mainly for vehicles that have constant power. I hope that helps
I got a question, for hardwire, y in amazon i saw. 2 end. For constant power and ground , and there a 3 end , 1 constant power , acc. , ground ? Any difference?
we have installed a few of the 2 wire systems. I prefer the 3 wire as the 3 wire monitors for ignition and changes based off whether there is voltage on the line or not. The 2 wire system from my understand when it sees a drop in voltage it goes into parking mode. But we do not sell any of the 2 wire systems so i can not verify 100%

Hi, I am going to use 2 different Dashcams for front and rear of the car. I want to use battery protection including the use of a 3-wire-hardwire-kit. Do you think it is a good idea to put two of them parallel on the fuse board? Eatch of them for each camera?
You can, we have before just make sure it is connected on a safe circuit and you should be fine. If you hook up to a 5amp or 7.5amp circuit you may overload it depending on dash cameras being used and how you connect it.
I got a Vantrue to install on my wife's 2023 Mazda CX-50 but the fuse box inside the cabin has all fuses constant power and I don't know how to install the hard wire kit so she can have parking mode. Is there any advise about this that you can give me.? Thank you

I have just ordered the Viofo A129 Duo Pro & intend to hard wire it via a fuse tap in my 2020 Toyota Corolla which is a hybrid. This may be more of a question for Toyota but if my dash cam was to run the battery down which it shouldn't do as I intend to set cut off at 12v. But if it did would the hybrid battery kick in to help in either continuing to power the dash cam or assisting the cars engine to start?
That is definitely a question for Toyota. I recently was sent some information that possibly on my fully electric car the battery may kick in to charge my accessory battery. I still need to verify if this is true or not. My vehicle is a KIA though.
How do I check if my dash cam has low battery protection? I have a Viofo a119 mini 2 currently powered from the 12v cigarette lighter. I am trying to find an option to power from obd via a cable that connects obd to usb a female. Any recommendations on a good obd adapter for this use case?
Hello there. I’m getting a229 pro 3 channel install this Friday. I drive a 2019 toyota corolla LE. Should I be wary of the battery issue for parking mode? Should I buy another battery?
depends on how long you are expecting the parking mode to work. If you are only looking for 1-3 hours. set it for 3 hours or less and minimum 12 volts low battery protection and you should be fine. if you are expecting it to record overnight or for longer periods of time a battery pack would be agreat an investment. Keep in mind to test your factory battery to see how healthy it is.
@@SafeDriveSolutions thanks for your reply. I guess if only uses for incident purpose parking only instead of overnight or all day recording. It should be fine.

It will not last for that long in parking mode if that is what you are asking. If parked for long periods of time I would turn it off. If short periods of time like 1 to 3 hours I would leave it on but I would also set the timer for 3 hours for parking mode on the unit.
How are these issues different for a hybrid car? I bought a Vantrue N4 pro that comes with cigarette lighter but I am going to hardware it to my Camry hybrid but now I am kind of hesitating
VANTRUE has low battery. protection on their cable. But that dash camera draws a lot of current. I would not install it without a battery pack personally. Or I would look at getting their low. battery protection cable that has dip switch for timer parking mode.
@@tanvir6607 yes we ship to USA. Keep in mind that unit on a fully charged battery pack will probably only get 12 hours approx of parking mode coverage. Battery pack takes 40-50 minutes of driving to fully charge. We only do IVOLT.

Parking G sensor? Time lapse recording? Motion detection? These are settings I'm not sure if I need or not and what to set them to. Can you help me with this? I'm mainly using it while driving to protect myself. Tia
You need the HK3 parking mode cable. for parking mode to work. However I do believe that if you are sitting stationary for 5 minutes parking mode will kick in on the unit. But the engine of course needs to be on for this to happen and the vehicle is not moving. I personally would not set any of the parking mode settings on that unit without the cable. But it is an older gen unit so there could be some settings I am unfamiliar with.

Do we have a way to hook the dash cam to a powercell that is being charged by the car, and if the powercell dies its fallback to the car's battery with voltage protection?
Hi Ben, I decided to get the Viofo A229 duo dash cam after watching your review of the Viofo A229 Vs IRoad X11. Now I'm having a problem when I hardwire it to my 2022 4th generation Mazda 3 - all fuses in the fuse box inside the cabin are constant power. Is there another way to connect the ACC yellow wire from other sources inside the cabin? Is it possible to just leave the ACC yellow wire alone since the unit has the voltage regulator to protect the battery from draining out? Any guidance is highly appreciated.
Glad our video helped you decide on dash camera. So a few things here. 1. Yellow wire must be hooked up to an ignition or it will not operate properly at all. I know this for a fact because I accidentally 1 time hooked up yellow and red backwards as Thinkware, IROAD and GNET red and yellow are opposites and the dash cam would not record at all. However that is also because the constant power was losing power(ha ha). So my advice to you is 1 of 2 things. 1. Find a shop familiar with how to hardwire as there is wires available to hook up but they require unplugging plugs at your computer, stripping back the wire, soldering, and taping the wire. (We do not share this information out as a lot of damage can be done if not done correctly) 2. Here is a video with fuse wiring layout for your vehicle I found online. ruclips.net/video/7kJ5KMZY_Ag/видео.html Also another tidbit that some times works. See all the fuse locations that are not being used. Test to see if any of those empty locations test as ignition. Lots of vehicles have an ignition in these empty spots.
@@SafeDriveSolutions Thanks. Looks like the only option for me is to find the suitable wire to hook up as the empty unused fuse spots don't have power connected.

I recently bought a dash cam, and now I want a power outlet to operate the camera. What is the best portable battery that can work when the car is parked without resorting to the car battery? Thank you.
If you are looking for a powercell I would recommend looking at Blackvue B-124X, Cell link Neo, Thinkware also has a smaller one. These are only units we have experience with.
@@SafeDriveSolutions Thank you, but how many hours can it work and how can it not work when driving so that it does not work both together and how can it start automatically when the car is parked.
@@YounesNex So the way a powercell works is a few ways. 1. You plug it into a cigarette lighter of your vehicle that only supplies power with switched ignition. While driving the powercell will charge up. This takes approximately 45 minutes to fully charge the powercell. One you turn vehicle off the powercell will no longer charge and turn to parking mode. The dash camera enters parking mode and will power dash cam until the powercell is fully discharged. One completely discharged it will turn off and it will not turn on again until you start the vehicle up again. Hence starting the process all over again of charging it up.
Hello friend, I bought a dashcam from Xiaomi, which has a special cable for parking monitoring that is activated by being hit by a car. Do you know if this could cause me problems in discharging my car's battery by leaving it several days without turning it on?
Hello we are not familiar with that product so we do not want to comment on how it should or should not be installed. I do recommend checking with manufacturer.
People assume that because it says radio. That the radio only turns on with ignition so it should be ignition instead of actually testing the wire to see if it is constant power or ignition.
@@SafeDriveSolutions @SafeDriveSolutions Its power protection at 12.4 12 or 11.8 on the cam depending on what you are comfortable with I always say 12.4 The OBD Power Supply Kit has a built-in 11.8 cut off in the cable as an extra precaution

The red wire goes into a 10A spot I don't know what the letters mean for that spot ec something, but the black wire goes into the 20A radio spot. This was a professional installer, surely they would know what you said about the radio and check? But my battery went flat in parking mode and the ap is set to protect battery at 12.1V so what else could it be?
My thinkware is set in the ap to 12.1 volts and the battery still died. WTH. Plus it never sends videos to my phone of any recording. I hate it. They charged 1300 with install, I had to pay 200 for a jump start I think I've been ripped off. I installed my last car dash cam myself, but now I have a brain injury and a brand new car with airbags every where I didn't want to stuff around myself and make a mistake or break something so they take advantage of me.
For $1300 did they also install a battery pack in your vehicle for the dash camera? It is always possible they hooked up constant power and ignition wrong which could keep the dash camera running night and day.

Absolutely ridiculous the PIR in the camera goes off and loads up numerous videos as it doesn't even work very well through windshield. P i r photo infrared is a low quality option as to a microwave sensor or/ and radar detection and shock sensor. Unfortunately some of the dash cams just load up the pictures and there's absolutely no reason to have it go off for a tree that has all its leaves move or a vehicle that backs in and doesn't go off. Giving advice for dash cams is like a camera that has to put up with the high temperatures of the window that doesn't have even 60 ft per minute is about the lowest quality thing I've ever seen in my life. GoPro cameras used to have a fitting on the back that and allowed it to click on when a source activated it. So if you have external computer controls that would be excellent. Unfortunately take some engineering skills that none of these dash cams can even begin to qualify. The test studies on RUclips show that people use reflective window in the summer and then heats up the glass to our super high temperature and this temperature affects the dash cams and there are certain dash cams that can the temperature as far as 180°. Unfortunate that these cameras are going to exposed to these and they're not offset from the actual glass far enough.
We have done lots of tests on motion detection dash cameras. Some products actually do not wake up and record. Typically the products we back are tested extensively to make sure they are good. But the problem is motion detection dash cameras waste a lot of energy while radar parking mode dash cameras are way more efficient

Hello @blackJoxer not sure where you are located but in Canada there is a lot of places you can go and get a free battery test provided you bring your battery inside. They can find out what the CCA or Cold Cranking Amps are and give recommendations on whether or not your car battery needs to be replaced. Over time car battery will need to be replaced. In terms of which car battery to use I would recommend having a powercell which is independent from the battery and will power the dash camera seperate from the battery but will charge while driving.
@@SafeDriveSolutions ohh, you just made me think of something I have never considered. You mentioned car batteries needing to be replaced every so many years because through normal operation (whether connected to auxiliary devices or not), they eventually stop holding a charge and die (or decrease in CCAs to where they can no longer turn an engine) What then is the life expectancy of these stand alone batteries? At the premium they command (north of $500 in some cases), depending on their life span, one could argue it's more cost effective to simply use and replace regular car batteries when they do go and most come with several years warranty that most likely exceed those of the power cells. This topic/analysis would be a great discussion for a future video provided you've not done so already.
@@nothing_burger It is a great idea. I will have to see how much time I can get to do some of these tests. Everytime I do the current draw tests they are very time consuming. However it is good for me to know what the current draw is on all the dash cameras. It is always easier to explain to customers when you are well informed.
If you set it to 12 volts you will get longer to record on parking mode typically. You are more then welcome to set it to 12.3 volts. It is up to the user. I just recommend not going below 12 volts due to all the computers on newer vehicles
@@SafeDriveSolutions Hello I just purchase the Viofo 229 and hardwired it today myself. For some reason, when it enter the parking mode with auto detection event , it recorded in my garage a few of 45s clips a few minutes apart even when there is no movement and no light, then it just turn off completely. Sometimes, it only recorded one 45s clip then turn off completely. I tried to switch to the 5frame/s mode and it just turn off after like 20 30s. I wired the battery wire to P/Outlet no.1 fuse (this one has constant power when the car is off when I check) and the ACC wire to the P/Outlet no.2 fuse (only power when turn on). I tried the battery protection with 12v, 12.2 and 12.4, they all have the same problem. I'm not sure if it is because I used P/Outlet no.1 for battery wire, but it did record a few clips of 45s each a couple of times. Should I switch to the Power seat fuse 30A? btw only the front dashcam is installed.
@@Dark_side9999 There is a lot packed in here and I will try my best to answer you. 1. Parking mode will activate while parked with ignition on. So for instance if I pull to a coffee shop and I am sitting in my car for 10 minutes not moving at all. After 5 minutes the dash camera will go into parking mode automatically because the G sensor is sensing no movement. Not sure if those are the parking mode recordings you are seeing or not but that is an example of parking mode recording with no impact or motion to vehicle. 2. I do not know fuse locations of your vehicle and we also do not give any advice on where to go for power for liability reasons. But to give you some insight. Dash cameras draw less than 0.25 amps of current. So it draws next to nothing in current. What I would recommend doing is getting a mutlimeter and measuring 3 things. 1.) measure battery voltage on battery under the hood 12.0 volts or whatever number you get at battery. 2.) measure battery voltage where you got power for dash camera 3.) double check your connections because a lot of videos people tell everyone to butt connect the connections or ram the wire in and use tape to hold it in place which in my opinion is all wrong. It should still be a solid connection which I personally like to solder but that is me. If you find with your vehicle turned off that the battery voltage is lower than 12 volts good chance that is why you are not recording while parked. I hope that helps.
Wth are toh talking about? Ive had my 24 hour parking dash cam for 6 months, it records every night, all night. I drove to work (10 mins there, 10 mins home) Never have i ever had an issue.
Great to hear that you get 24 hours. Do you by chance drive a diesel truck with 2 batteries under the hood? What dash camera are you using? What type of vehicle? What parking mode is it set at. So many variables. Every vehicle is different. This video would not resonate with so many people if it was false.
I know there's different variables that may persuade this answer (ambient heat, battery health, and various kinds of parking mode a user can select, i.e., Impact only, adjustable FPS, buffered, time lapse), assuming a hard-wire to the fuse box install, meaning, no power cell, then approximately how many hours (generally) can someone expect to get parking mode functionality assuming 12v is selected as the low voltage cut-off for battery protection?
Most videos talk about how many hours they can get with the added power cell but I've yet to find one that answers how many hours they can realistically (or ball park) get from just the car battery.
So I get this question a lot and there is way too many factors. Such as size of vehicle battery, whether your vehicle has 2 batteries, Do you have any other aftermarket accessories installed for instance GPS tracking. But generally what I find is that if you drive everyday and your battery is in good health.
Front and Rear Motion Detection / Time Lapse / or Auto Event Detection
3-6 hours due to the current draw on most vehicles (200-250ma current draw)
Front and Rear Energy Saving Mode (Impact Only) F790 / Q800pro / U1000
4-5 days plus (10-18ma of current draw)
Front only Motion Detection / TIme Lapse / Auto Event detection
4-8 hours due to the current draw on most vehicles (120-160ma)
Obviously all approximates. I do know some vehicles that will get a solid 16 hours with a 3 channel which is even more current draw then listed but those are generally 2 battery vehicles like a Diesel truck.

Yes, absolutely to a battery pack.

I'm getting a dashcam soon and just came across an OBD cable which I was not aware of. It's definitely intriguing to me as I was going to hardwire it anyway
The OBD connection is only meant for plugging in a laptop. Using it as a power sauce can damage your vehicle's computer. Just be aware.

Is the interface smart that it transmits data into the usb data line or does the SOURCE power supply just switch from accessory to constant 12v ?
ruclips.net/video/BgsKy9Hhzvc/видео.html this explains it
@@SafeDriveSolutions sorry this talks about how to wire up the fuse box side.
Some of the units we have read in the manuals they last 10 minutes.
the battery is usually to allow the unit to save its current file in the event of the power being cut.
Yes which is why we tell people we recommend against those units. But most people get clouded by I want 24 hour parking mode.
This is the most informative video I have seen. Now I can buy a proper dash cam. TY
Not sure if it makes any difference for a hybrid cars. What would you recommend regular hardwired or hardwired battery pack or for a hybrid car?

Got a wolf G890 what would be the best set up. Way to wire . Would u recommend things to use ither things. . i wan to have an have constant power . For motion dector/ parking mode . Id why installer recommended some sort. 5 v inverter

Hey in the video you said to check the fused power to ensure low-voltage protection is detected. I install my camera with protection, it does have constant power. What should I be looking for? Or testing in the fuse box? I do want it to be in parking mode.

No we do not have that specific video.

Hello there. I’m getting a229 pro 3 channel install this Friday. I drive a 2019 toyota corolla LE.

depends on how long you are expecting the parking mode to work.

It will not last for that long in parking mode if that is what you are asking. If parked for long periods of time I would turn it off. If short periods of time like 1 to 3 hours I would leave it on but I would also set the timer for 3 hours for parking mode on the unit.

I have been watchn few of your videos. Just got Viofo 119av3. Gonna plug into CIG lighter plug and it does not stay connected. It'll turn off with engine. My question is in settings. So if I'm just plug and play I can't use Parking Mode features? If that's the case here Then will I or won't I need to set anything in Parking Mode Timer? Park recording timer? Park motion detection?
Is it possible for a dash cam to mess up the alternators voltage regulator? I had a vantrue dash cam in my Ford explorer. Went through 2 alternators and batteries due to the voltage regulator. Moved my camera over to my Lexus and sure enough, bad voltage regulator in it as well shortly after.
I honestly have never heard of that. Dash cameras draw less than an amp of current. But anything is possible.

so do you recommend the viofo hardwire kit?
yes i do we have tested it on the channel. It typically shuts off 1.5 minutes after dropping below set voltage

(We do not share this information out as a lot of damage can be done if not done correctly)

I need a dashcam no bulky cables, no additional blind spot on my windshield, i couldn't find anything simple with high technology, so far i found vantrue n5 pro is the best in quality however its big and cables everywhere and no remote access.

You mentioned car batteries needing to be replaced every so many years because through normal operation (whether connected to auxiliary devices or not), they eventually stop holding a charge and die (or decrease in CCAs to where they can no longer turn an engine)
What then is the life expectancy of these stand alone batteries? At the premium they command (north of $500 in some cases), depending on their life span, one could argue it's more cost effective to simply use and replace regular car batteries when they do go and most come with several years warranty that most likely exceed those of the power cells.
This topic/analysis would be a great discussion for a future video provided you've not done so already.
@@nothing_burger It is a great idea. I will have to see how much time I can get to do some of these tests. Everytime I do the current draw tests they are very time consuming. However it is good for me to know what the current draw is on all the dash cameras. It is always easier to explain to customers when you are well informed.
why set battery protection to 12v if you have 12.3?
If you set it to 12 volts you will get longer to record on parking mode typically. You are more then welcome to set it to 12.3 volts. It is up to the user. I just recommend not going below 12 volts due to all the computers on newer vehicles

Hello I just purchase the Viofo 229 and hardwired it today myself.
I wired the battery wire to P/Outlet no.1 fuse (this one has constant power when the car is off when I check) and
the ACC wire to the P/Outlet no.2 fuse (only power when turn on).
I tried the battery protection with 12v, 12.2 and 12.4, they all have the same problem.
I'm not sure if it is because I used P/Outlet no.1 for battery wire, but it did record a few clips of 45s each a couple of times. Should I switch to the Power seat fuse 30A?

Well you can also solve the problem. Remove the dash cam from your vehicle da and night.
you can just turn parking mode off.
Anyone tried Azdome M550 Pro?
we have not
@@SafeDriveSolutions will you try?
Wth are toh talking about? Ive had my 24 hour parking dash cam for 6 months, it records every night, all night. I drove to work (10 mins there, 10 mins home) Never have i ever had an issue.
Great to hear that you get 24 hours. Do you by chance drive a diesel truck with 2 batteries under the hood?
What dash camera are you using? What type of vehicle? What parking mode is it set at.
So many variables.
Every vehicle is different. This video would not resonate with so many people if it was false.
