Chester really hit these guys. They've written two songs about him so far, counting this and I Didn't Know the Time. I want them to heal but I like how both albums have Chester tributes so far. Especially since Chester's role in STP was so brief

This album is simply great and I keep coming back to it more than most records these past few years. Some of their finest material to date imo, each song has that unmistakable STP touch with the trademark guitar chords and vocal melodies. Dave Gutt is doing a fantastic job here.

While Gutt's vocal style is definitely more reminiscent of Weiland, it's Bennington that really had the most profound affect on him. Gutt and Bennington have been friends since the earlier days of Linkin Park and Gutt's former band, Dry Cell, their friendship dating back to 2001. The song 'Finest Hour' is all about Chester, the music itself sounding like a memorial of sorts. Gutt painstakingly sings "you never said goodbye / it left a void like no other" to start the song off, later saying his farewells: "I won't forget that smile / It was contagious like no other... I'll hold our precious time up to the sky / I'll miss you brother." (Immortal Reviews)

I also think the song is about Chester. I know all of the songs are credited to all members of the band but I'm not sure Gutt writes the lyrics to all of the songs. I wouldn't be surprised if they all contributed to this song. It definitely feels like a song about a friend that committed suicide based on the lyrics more so than Scott's slow demise.

Makes sense. Let’s face it, I love Scott Weiland and his lyrics and his voice, but Scott was an asshole. These are beautiful lyrics for a fallen friend, not acquaintance with someone. Sure he could be talking about Scott, but I doubt that now after reading this thread

@@jakeriley5930 if you see the way they talk about Scott in interviews, you'd quickly notice that they do miss him a lot- though they probably miss who he was in the beginning, before he got addicted to drugs and before the fame got to his head. Death tends to do that, it makes us miss the good things and forget the bad things.
I do think it's about Chester, though, for 3 reasons:
      1. The lyrics mention that it was 'a darkness hid inside', as well as mention pressure the person was under, which fits more for depression than addiction.
      2. Again about the 'darkness hid inside'- everyone knew about Scott's addiction, so it wouldn't fit to describe his battles as something that was hidden; while, even though people knew Chester had mental health struggles, nobody knew how bad it was for him, and most thought he had put it behind him. He seemed to be happy.
      3. The second verse talks about a contagious smile- which is one of the things that is constantly said about Chester. Everyone always talks about how not only was he nearly always smiling, but he was always trying to make others laugh as well and you couldn't talk with him without starting to smile...

    You never said goodbye
It left a void that's like no other
    I know because it's true
    A darkness hid inside
    Another storm has scorned another
    I know because of you
    And now
I know the pressure you were under
Behind your eyes there lied a war
I never thought you'd be another
Another thought and I was up
    Here in your finest hour
    This is your finest hour
    I won't forget that smile
It was contagious like no other
    I know because it's true
    I'll hold our precious time
Up to the sky, I'll miss you brother
I hope you know it's true
