  • White Knight Chronicles 「白騎士物語」is a Japanese role-playing game produced by Level-5 and SCE Japan Studio, and published for the Sony PlayStation 3 (2008 in Japan, 2010 in the west).
Like some popular western RPGs of the time, you can create your own avatar that will interact with the game world and its inhabitants. Sadly, if you're expecting a Mass Effect or Dragon Age experience, you'll be sorely disappointed.
We join Leonard, a porter of a wine storage company, who must deliver wine to the Princess' coming of age ceremony. It's a pompous event full of festivity, which Leonard and friends are late returning to due to some hiccups. After joining the party, uninvited, they are roped into political events that sees Leonard joining with a large suit of armour, an Incorruptus, and his adventure begins.

I found this game relatively late, I purchased it from a used game vendor at a flea market in late 2020 early 2021. I thought the game was fun , I enjoyed the story for what it was and even had fun trying to figure out whether or not some of the people you pick up along the way were spies and who exactly Eldore was and what his motives were. I enjoyed multiple play throughs but was disappointed that because I came so late in the game so to speak that there was no online features left to use. I did find some areas confusing but managed to make it through after lots of backtracking. Overall I’d give this game a 10/10.
I’ll also say that I searched for a copy of the second game for months and when I did find it, it was very expensive. I personally recommend this game.
Great review btw. You hit on a lot of the same points I brought up while speaking with my husband about it.

Nice review. I played this game ages ago but also missed online play. Can't see myself getting around to playing the second, though. And your avatar looks like you!

Hell Fire RPGs Haha. Maybe in size, but the hair is way off.
I’ll be playing the second game, but probably not for some time. I did enjoy the journey of this game, but I definitely don’t want to play it again. Haha.

I played both 1 and 2 during their time and played online a lot. It was honestly a lot of fun. Could it have been better? Sure but it was not as bad as reviews say

Maybe the Avatar character could have more of a role in the story as either a supporting character to both Lenord, Kara, Yulie and Caesar and they had a bit of dialogue to interact with the rest of the cast and help them with sticky situations like in Albana, Greede and the Baccia tribes. Or, what if the Avatar character became the White Knight, Dragon Knight or Moon Maiden instead, making the avatar the main character of the story. Lenord will just focus on rescuing Princess Cisna and Caesar will be on a quest to find out who he really is. Also I think some companions and guest characters like Yulie, Caesar, Kara, Captain Cyrus, Miu and that Rabbit Guy from Greede could be romance options to the avatar character. During each relationship, the avatar and players gets to know about these characters and their back stories.

This game really catches my atention, but i dont know if i can stand some design choices.. maybe someday. >:0
Thanks a lot for your review, that was a very informative video and your voiceover is really enjoyable.

No problem! Thanks for watching! The game isn't really sustainable over a long time. I often got frustrated by the gigantic enemies that peppered the environment, and the fact that they respawned if you dallied too long on a map.

I bought the game in like 2013-2014 and didn't know what it was though the stuff with building a town, having giant battles, and being set in a fantasy world was amazing. I give this game a 10/10, not because I think it's great, but because of how it made me feel at the end. I compare White Knights Chronicles to the most cliche an anime could be and therefore love every second of it. I bought the version that came with both games and made sure not to spoil myself though found out a couple small things that were in the sequel. The main character thing was kind of meh, I did like that *my* character wasn't some chosen one but was just there for the ride and I just loved the moments when you did get noticed. I'm a shy introvert person with social anxiety so it's literally how I am with a group of people, but I would have preferred there have been more acknowledgement because other than the quick "This is the new guy/gal" you have no attachment to any of the other characters. I will say that your character does get a little more screen time in the second game and there was supposed to be a type of expansion or something that was for your character, but it never got released outside of Japan. All in all I loved the cheesiness of the game and I'm a sucker for Avatar: The Last Airbender type adventures where you and your friends travel the world and you meet allies and what not. Would I play it again? Probably not, but if I could play the online mode or just sit down with someone or other people and have a chat about the story flaws and all, I'd be content. There are just some things that may be bad, but you just have a soft spot for.

Dayvon Rose Yeah, that’s my exact reasoning for not wanting to pay it again. If the online component was still around, then it could be fun to play with friends - but I’m not really interested in running through the story again. I did hear that the second game gave your character some more screen time, so I really want to check that out.
I didn’t hate this game. There were things I did like about it, it’s just not something I’d consider a masterpiece, ya know?

    • @DayvonR64

@@Venoix Oh I agree about the masterpiece thing. I think the charm just was able to snatch me up because I really was interested in what the sequel had and I had not only the first game but the second game to look forward to. I was never a fan of the type of gameplay where you have to wait for your turn and I felt like this mix was interestingly different specially when the tide of battle could change at a moments notice. Though while I was fighting bosses and enemies in some interesting locations I couldn't help but continuously think "This would have been really epic if this was online".
Even though the characters are mostly walking cliches I just felt attached to them because, for me, they were the kind of characters I'd see in animes I watch. I wasn't surprised by the truth of Kara, but I was surprised about who she turned out to be and started hitting myself over the head kind of piercing everything together. Literally spent most of the game with her in my party just for her to pull that crap lmao.
The sequel does try to shake things up a bit and it does kind of feel bigger if that makes sense. If you are going to make a video on it, I look forward to it because White Knight Chronicles owns my soul and I'm never going to replay it so I need some form of outlet and/or someone to talk to for this game that nobody I know has played lmao.

Dayvon Rose Haha! With the Kara letting Princess Cisna go, and then later claiming she was knocked out and that’s why she wasn’t around, I didn’t really think anything other than “wow! That’s bad writing”. Glad it came around in the end.
Haha! Yeah, I’ll definitely be adding the sequel onto the roster of games I play and review. As I mentioned in this review, I love Georama (from Dark Cloud), so I’d be interested to see in how that’s been changed in the next title.

@@Venoix I also liked that she had a incoruptus yet playing as her you never knew. I truly loved the knights and wished you could double team without it being for story purposes. I was such a nerd when I played saying "Verto!" thinking I was a bad ass reciting the spell when giant bosses were running towards me.

its a bit disappointing to hear the story isn't very great. But the Create-a-Character aspect as well as the world it takes place in seems interesting enough. I've really grown to love games where i can take a character i made and continue with that character in a completely different one.

    • @Venoix
      @Venoix  2 года назад +1

The game does have some merits, but the story isn't really one of them. Haha. Probably because the main purpose of the game was to serve as a multiplayer title - which sucks now because the servers closed down a long time ago.
      Anyway, thanks for watching!

Nice! That’s exactly what I’ve been looking for! A JRPG where my character isn’t the protagonists and has fuck all to do with anything! So cool! I bet if we took our character out of the every scene NOTHING WOULD CHANGE!!! NICE!! I’ve always wanted to play a game where I was just some lowly pleb and just got to watch cool shit happen and not actually be a part of it! It’s also so awesome that it’s called White Knight Chronicles, cause now not only can defend mi’lady’s honor from Chad asshole on instagram, Now I can actually be a White Knight virtually! Well actually Im still just a lowly peasant, but I get to be squire of a real White Knight and empty is chamber pots so mi’lady isn’t accosted by the smell whenever he beds mi’lady every night. Finally a game that speaks to my soul! Man, how did this not sell more?! Why wasn’t there a sequel! I demand answers SONY!!
