THIS IS A SPOILER FREE REVIEW *UNTIL* 21:15, at that point I HIGHLY RECOMMEND skipping to 25:00 to avoid ALL Spoilers. Okay? Got it? Cool. My Twitch - www.twitch.tv/beatemupswood // My Twitter - twitter.com/BeatemupsWood
I'm playing through on my 3ds and did the glitch and jumped from level 32 to 54 i believe, so I can focus on the story. I actually greatly regret doing it. When I get xcde ill play without the glitch
I play through games ridiculously slow for some reason. I like to make sure I'm getting everything out of the game I can without rushing so I feel you.
When I think Xenoblade, I can only hear the victory line: "What bunch of jokers!" That never got old for me and actually emboldened me more with the other million subsequent enemy fights!
The characters of Xenoblade make the game so much better, too. With specific combinations of party members, they can have some hilarious and heartwarming after-battle and quest dialogue with eachother.
Reviewing the genres youre not into, just brings in abstract points that are hardly agreeable. You focus so hard on the downsides than what it does good.
let's talk about real thing here... if you played it... it's borderline impossible to dislike the game... i haven't yet to see any streamer on content creator who played this game.. and truly dislike it... serious trust issue with the content maker if that to happen here...
Me too. Got this the other day and did exactly the same thing as when I got it on the wii: left it on the title screen to listen to the main theme song
Wood: "I even cleared up a ton of the sidequests and had a total playtime of about 60 hours..." Me, sitting here at 115 hours, not even finished with mechonis core section...
Listen, I spent 400 hrs in Xenoblade 2. I like to take my sweet time on Xenoblade games. No guilt. All this "I don't like long games" nonsense. I sure do if they have this level of quality.
I also felt like Xenoblade2 combat was awkward and long until I finally understood how the chain attacks work with the elemental orbs thing, then suddenly the combat felt super rewarding, and like you could finish any battle real quick. It's too bad that the tutorials in that game are terrible and it took me more than half of the story until the combat finally clicked.
I didn’t really kno what I was doing until chapter 6 lol. Still my favorite game on the Switch hands down. It goes XC2, XCDE, BOTW, Metroid Dread, Smash Bros ultimate
“Sadly, I could barely make it through 5 hours of this absolute awful...” Wood, Don’t scare me like that, I almost feared for your safety and well-being 🤣🤣
The thing is: he KNOWS that if he says that as real, alot of people will not like the video. So for the most part when hes playing new games, he will say complements of them. Only game he REALLY doesnt like is xenoblade chronicles 2, which is fine. Well idrc about any xenoblade game but he has to lol
His the useless cheap dude who cant sort out a capture card for the switch and he almost only does videos on it.... maybe he'll cry his sad again so one of yous can send him one
It’s crazy, I really enjoyed what I played of Xenoblade 2 but I couldn’t find out why it felt so off in combat. Then you nailed it: the auto attack interrupt when moving. I looooove the original and that alone would’ve made the sequel far more enjoyable. I’m so glad you love this game though, such a wonderful experience. Love the environments and soundtrack soooo much.
She literally never got ANYTHING good in the story. Ok, let me rephrase that. Everything good she had was taken away from her. The story took a MAJOR dump on her and i kinda hate the game for it, not gonna lie
@Guy Dude I think so too. But really? That's the least they could do. I mean, i'm biased, because i adore Melia, but still, when it comes to the main game, she just deserved better. I'm glad that Future Connected exists, i really enjoyed it, but still, i have a hard time replaying the main game
@@Ultimabuster92 I really hope they ll biold up on future connected with a dlc like torna or something. I loved it and imo took melias chatacter development from the base game to a whole other level plus we have a full new world to explore...
Xenoblade 1 is literally a masterpiece on the entire medium. I really do hope monoliths next game reaches its high, cause I believe xenoblade, xenogears and the xenosaga trilogy are incredible works. Monolith has the ability to make games greater than the sum of their parts and i cant wait for their next one.
@MonsterKat Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is much more superior than XC2 in my honest opinion, although I still have a lot of love for XC2 because it was my first Xeno game. Aegis 4 life!
He's allowed to have his opinion. Personally I like Riki, but he certainly has flaws. (He has like... 3 relevant scenes in the story.) And being one of the most powerful characters... Eh, not really? He's one of the most versatile, but I wouldn't say one of the most powerful.
@@Laurmachi he's a really sweet character. Often times, he would look out for members of the party. Really loved that one scene where they decided to camp it out because he was hungry and tired. In truth, Melia was the actual one who needed rest. It might not be as grand as the other cutscenes, but that had me liking him more as a party member.
Actually, cancelling auto attacks by moving around in XC2 can be exploited. The first attack in your auto attack chain often comes out relatively quickly compared to the ones that follow. By moving just a little bit after the first auto attack connects, you can increase your auto attack rate significantly, which both makes you more engaged (since now you're using inputs for your auto attacks) and since everything in combat builds off of your auto attacks, this speeds up everything in combat.
@@Centaursixtysix they literally talk in the tutorial about how you need to not move to do your second/third attack animations cause they do more damage, so they do know you can autoattack cancel, it just doesnt work for every character
People complain about how bad the tutorials are and then will say one of the few things explained in the tutorial is "unintentional." lol average beatemups fan@@Centaursixtysix
@@muuhnkin4611 They're only repeating if you don't mix up your party. If you only use the same 3, then yes you're only going to hear the same voice lines. So, like many of his criticisms of 1 and 2, it's ridiculous to blame the game for that
@@EgotisticalAltruist That is just not true... I switch my party all the time and each character has repeating lines, man. Sharla and her "WE MAKE A GREAT TEAM!" or Riki's "RIKI LIKES FIGHTING EASY MONSTERS" or Dunban's "I SEE THIS ISNT PUSHING YOU AT ALL".
Remember the nostalgia of playing a really good Jrpg from the 90's/early 2000? I felt exactly the same thing playing Definitive edition as I played it for the first time. I was completely bluffed by the ending, it was amazing.
3:42 Before we meet shulk, we first meet Dunban Me: *PTSD to the ign original xenoblade definitive review* (btw, not because he said it wrong, he said it normally)
That final boss encounter is how I felt at the end of Xenoblade X. I barely made it through the second phase and I felt that was one of the greatest achievements I've ever had but then when the third phase hit I got immediately wiped because I was underleveled. ah, the xenoblade experience
I just beat the game. Oml its def a top 5 jrpg! Its unique and has a compelling story with relatable characters. I love that the characters are given to you on a nice spread so that by time you start to get “bored” you get another character. Pretty much every map is jaw dropping
Pretty sure they patched the voice lines in xeno 2 to happen less - then in a dlc challenge map they added it back in and cranked it up even more as a meme
I was secretly hoping they would give that one area of Makna forest with really bad pop in OG Xenoblade graphics. Wouldn't be the first time they turned a games flaw into a meme.
back when i played the original on the wii, one of the first phrases i read about it was "every game will be a little disappointing after this", and there's only one that has been the exception, it was the definitive edition, they perfected perfection.
To me after Xenoblade 2 it was the same, because I played Bravely Default and it is not 25% as good as Xenoblade 2 (Yeah, I love Xenoblade 2) But before Xenoblade 2, the only RPG that was close to be as amazing to Xenoblade 1 to me was Tales of the Abyss, but now with 2 I consider it as good as the first
"Auto attacks aren't your main method of attacking" *SEVEN HAS ENTERED THE CHAT* ALSO RIKI IS UNIRONICALLY THE BEST CHARACTER HOW DARE YOU HE IS OP AND BEST BOY
Also your opinions about XC2 are bad and you should feel bad. 😢 The only thing that tops the wild plot twists in the last 1/3 of XC1 is the last chapter of XC2. Fully. Wild.
19:18 I don’t want to start a shitstorm, especially considering this is 2’s combat i’m addressing here, not 1’s, but Wood isn’t even using the system correctly here. If course he isn’t killing it quickly; he’s using no specials, no blade combos, and no chain attacks!
ikr. Aren;t you supposed to use chain attacks to do lots of red arts to build it up and then at max Dunban does his Blossom Dance the enemy literally explodes out of awesomeness and everybody goes home. Kidding mostly that's literally how I killed every unique enemy in the game though, also endless chains with Dunban's Heat Haze + Soaring Tempest, when done in mobs you'll always have a full party meter
Yeah, but granted xbc 2 doesn't really tell you at all about auto cancelling and how absolutely necessary it is to play the game. A lot of the problems with 2s gameplay is that it has way too many systems that are either underexplained or just aren't explained at all. That thing about moving that he complains about is literally whybl arts charge a bit faster in 2, but again, not explained at all. Like you're literally rarely supposed to stand still and typically only do the first hit of the auto for most of the game, which is completely unintuitive. it's really easy to just assume you're supposed to stand still and let the auto attack play out until you're charged instead of canceling the animation to make it literally 3 times as fast. Why they designed it that way I'll never know. That's not even getting into how poorly explained combos and specials and elements are in general. The tutorials in that game are the worst. At least they could have said at some point that Auto attacks are useless for everything that's not charging arts.
@@xansiesm6422 This is complete nonsense, auto canceling and all these techniques are not necessary at all to play the game. Everything is explained to allow you to play and finish the game. The strength of X2 is that even a beginner can finish the game without mastering anything. The system is so good and has so much depth that masters can also enjoy the game, using tech that are not explained by discovering them by playing and stressing the game mechanics. Skills used by speed runners are not necessary to play the game, though. Everything is explained to allow you to play the game at the most basic level, like in Xenoblade, the more advanced stuff is at best hinted at, like in many games since Street Fighter. I don’t know what kind of gamer doesn’t know that, and wants everything explained when most people are confused already by the explanations of Xenoblade 2’s basic combat system, and are still confused by Xenoblade’s combat system.
Pretty much from what I saw. If I can recall from watching his vids, he didn’t like the combat in xc2 but enjoyed the one in torna and telling us how he liked the blade combos and chain attack break and stuff when this stuff was already in the original game. Maybe it’s because he skimmed through the tutorial or something but idk really. His opinion not mine, if he didn’t like 2 because of “x” and “y” then so be it :/
On Xeno 2's auto attacks, it works that way so you take when you move, and when you attack into account when strategizing. The auto attacks increase in strength in a 1 2 3 pattern, so you should move only after the third hit when it's power resets. It also keeps a steady rhythm (123 pause 123), and if you cancel the auto attack with an art in sync with the tempo, you get bonus damage. You have to really think of when you're going to move to be most effective and decide wether you can wait for the art, or sacrifice damage because you need the art right now
Melia of Fonsa Myma most people have found that just flicking the stick to hit with the first auto-attack over and over deals way more damage than waiting for all 3 attacks to hit.
@@Red_Bl4ze Yeah it really does, and it builds up your arts much, much faster. It works best on the characters that have really fast attack animations on their first attack.
@@Red_Bl4ze It's still worth getting up to at least the second stage auto attack for art canceling purposes, so the mechanic still has a place in battle.
Yeah I wish he would realize this because the combat is one of my favorite things about XBC2 and you have to do a lot of optimizing and its extremely fun
The Red Blur I’ve been saying this forever lol, I was playing around with the game mechanics and figured this out in the first 10 hours of gameplay and thought I was the only one or knew about it lol
"i don't want to be punished for moving during an auto attack" not having this is actually a humongous nerf. you can stutter step cancel in Xeno2 to attack faster and build up meter. in xc1 this would have charged talent arts faster. I understand the line of thinking you had there, but I thought people should know that this is a common misunderstanding and it's actually a bad thing.
I actually prefer the attack animation to stop while I'm moving. When trying to position Shulk behind or to the side, it's a nightmare sometimes. He'll draw aggro and the focus of an enemy, because of attacking while moving, messing up the chance to do positional attacks. I appreciate moving to decrease aggro, so I give the advantage to Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in that regard.
@@NostraSamus I think both work perfectly for their respective games. 1's keep the combat quick and fluid while 2's makes it easier to perform insane combos.
7:40 For XC2 the auto attack does that so you could do stuff like auto attack canceling and art canceling it’s not that bad once you learn it in fact it’s really useful
yeah, seriously. dude is just complaining about something that isn't worth complaining about at all and just proves he's terrible at the game because he doesn't know how useful it is in game.
In xenoblade 2 if u let the auto attack hit the enemy then tap the thumb stick to just barely move you can reset your attack animation and hit again sometimes faster than just standing there - by not attacking when moving you start to lose aggro so the enemy should stop targeting you allowing you to get to the side or behind the enemy more easily
He's complaining about the slow combat when he doesn't even understand that the battles end really fast if he did more than just stand there auto attacking.
@@corywashington9580 In his video where he restarted the game, he showed off his previous save file... he was 54 hours in and only on Chapter 3. This goes to show that he probably just stood there auto-attacking. When that didn't work, he probably went to grind a few levels. As long as Xenoblade 2 is, you can't be stuck on Chapter 3 54 hours into the game. Even in the gameplay he shows in this video, he's not even using his arts, let alone blade combos, which would end the battles much faster.
Gotta say, I didn't really look into this game because I thought it's just another JRPG game that I'm not really a fan of, but the way you explained through the mechanics really convinced me to buy this because it specifically doesn't have the things that I hate about JRPGs. That said, thank you for the review and the heads up on spoilers so people like me could still experience the game.
SPOILERS FOR XENOBLADE 1&2 ENDINGS: . . . . I think he would love the architect revelation and how Xenoblade 1 and 2 link together. He would also freak out a little bit when he hears “Today, we use our power to fell a god, and seize our destiny!”
This guy is without question the best game reviewer on youtube. The balance between enthusiasm, personal preference, and conveying the mechanics of a game is so good. The whole arc of this review is excellent.
By the way Wood, Sharla's talent art is to manually cool off her rifle, which takes significantly less time than if you let it overheat. It's best to use it when you feel you don't need to worry about using her other arts.
Shulk saying "saw that Sharla? It was amazing!" or smth like that, Sharla saying "oh, I uhm... wasn't really looking" and Reyn laughing are like 70% of my playthrough and I love it
Can i just say that wood giving us a time stamp in every video to help us with spoilers and stuff is super appreciated from all of us, So thanks Wood :)
So, I just played through this one. Man, it was good. I first played it on the 3ds. I dug it but I couldn't stick with it for some reason. This switch version just really did make it better and I beat it this time. Over 100 hours. I gotta say though, something about it made me appreciate Xenoblade 2 even more... In fact once I finished this one I jumped right back into Xenoblade 2 starting a new game and I feel like I'm loving that even more than I did the first time I played it. You and your damn complaints about Xenoblade 2... lol. The combat doesn't work how you think it works man. But hey, we all enjoy the things we enjoy.
@@darkstorm2579 Not really, it's an opinion. He might be too vocal about it, but sometimes, you just don't click with a gameplay, sometimes you don't understand it, and sometimes you just disagree with the design decisions that were made.
I can’t believe it, Wood’s redemption arc, I’m so happy you love this game and even happier that you’re thinking about trying 2 again. If you ever do, stream it so chat can help you better understand the gameplay and all that
I think the reason the battles in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 can take so long is because of the combo system. Players will kill enemies much quicker if they fully understand the combat system, but it's not explained/demonstrated as well as it should be. They kind of just throw a bunch of fleeting text tutorials at you, and expect you to remember it. I don't think you can even go back to look at those tutorials either.
I highly recommend to change the button mapping: Dpad left ZL, Dpad right ZR Then you can move your character, camera and chose battle arts at the same time.
XC2 while that was more of an infamous video for you, was the reason I found your channel and subscribed to it. XC1 was my favorite game of all time, so I had high hopes going into the 2nd one. But after beating the entire main story, I thought it was kinda okay. it felt like everyone only had high praise for the game and not many people found issues in the parts that I did with the game. So when I saw your review, I felt that my interest in games kinda aligned with yours and I was down to see more of your videos down the line. I'm really happy you enjoyed this game as much as you did, and I look forward to seeing more videos down the line!
@Hkg 1 you sure that's what people are saying? In my experience everything in xc2 is inferior outside of the world(maybe) and combat I suppose? I think the combat is more indepth
I felt pretty similarly when replaying this game for the second (though never finished it originally) time especially when it came to doing quests which I mostly ignored originally. My one issue is that you didn’t mention Future Connected though I believe that deserves a whole separate video in the future. I also get you’re issues with the Sequal as the combat there is slow without having been through the majority of the game. Love what you do and I hope no one else down here in the comments goes overboard.
The combat of XC2 is actually very complex, it's just unlocking it all that is slow. Once you master it, you'll be pulling off crazy damage and its very rewarding.
“no repeating voice lines! that, I appreciated.” are you serious?! I’ve heard Reyn say “LET’S NOT LOSE OUR HEADS THOUGH!” about 500 times, and I’m only up to Satorl Marsh on my first playthrough. I’m very much enjoying the game, though, and intend to play through the full trilogy. great review!! (other than blatantly being wrong about the voice lines 😂)
The attack cancel when you move in Xenoblade 2 is actually used to animation cancel arts. There's actually a lot of depth in that game but it's silly that 1. It isn't entirely obvious and 2. The game tries to introduce new game mechanics as late as the final chapter which is not good design, but I had a ton of fun with it in the end.
The singular mechanic introduced in the late game is related to story events, so they couldn't have introduced it much earlier. It's also barely impactful on the overall combat and is more of an easter egg than anything else.
@@cotacachi12 To be fair he said he didn't like Xenoblade 2 because he doesn't like the combat systems. But now he likes them, so does he or does not like the games? I don't know and I don't think he does either.
You know I've never played this, or Nino kuni, an for some reason i just realized that Nino kuni is animated by studio ghibli, so I think its a must play now.
I played XB2 first and took a month break halfway through, returned and beat the game. Then played XB1 every day even for 10 hours straight sometimes and beat the game without any long breaks
I just want to say, in your review of this game; because you have an accent... the way you say Monado is just so damn correct. It’s a truly cannon pronunciation. Lol! Dude, you rock and I couldn’t agree with you more. I loved Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and played a ton of it (and of course beat it) because I am a huge fan of the XBC universe... didn’t mind it at all but the game was somewhat slow in comparison to the original. I’m not sure if it felt like it had flaws just because of how perfect the original was... Xenoblade Chronicles is a legendary game after all. Its a tough game to compete with, not to mention make direct comparisons. I felt the Torna expansion held up a better torch to the original. The engine was upgraded alongside graphics, and the gameplay was a bit closer to the original with the lack of “blades” being under your control. XBC is such an incredible game that the Wii and 3DS versions are completely enjoyable, even up to today’s standards. The graphics are definitely dated in the non-HD version, but the art style is so unique and world design is near flawless that it made up for the dated graphics. Don’t even get me started on the storyline... has more twists and turns than many movies or television series out there. There’s a story arch around every corner to keep you consistently hooked. Now that it’s in HD, I think this game is literally top tier *perfect* in general. I haven’t made the leap to buy it yet, but I will soon and when that happens, I shall prepare myself to have absolutely NO LIFE. Lol. I sunk 120hrs into the original and am prepared to do the same if not more with the HD version soon. Thanks for the great review! Don’t worry about the last one... although you were pretty harsh on XBC2, I believe you were on point with your critiques. A little harsh, but it was your opinion - and it’s not to say that you weren’t right. You were very critical, but your opinions were definitely not baseless. I understood where you were coming from. I felt the same way but because I’m a super fan, I could look past the flaws and enjoy the game. Now that XBCHD is out... Holy moly. If anyone hasn’t ever played the game out there, it’s a MUST BUY. This will be one of the greatest JRPGs you will ever play. For real. 👍🏼
19:23 you are supposed to build chains of element arts (for example you could have chosen Nia's Water art and then as third art a fire art from Pyra again) and they will do increasing damage. If you don't know how the battle system works, you shouldn't complain about fights taking too long :D Anyway, great review of Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition. I loved the original and the Remaster is SO good 👌
I'd argue that people not understanding the battle is still a flaw of the game. Whether it affects you or not, if it's a common problem that makes a large amount of people unisterested in the game it should still be acknowledged as such.
Yess. You should definitely give XC2 a proper second chance!!! If you loved this one and loved Torna, you'll love XC2 if you just get a bit further in the story than before. Don't worry; it won't take you 50-60 hours to get to the same part. It should be around 10 and the story gets VERY interesting. It's a great game and I hate that you're missing out on it!!
No. Some people just don't like XC2 and that's okay. I've beaten XC2 several times and I still think it is an extremely, extremely flawed game. If he doesn't like it now, I doubt he will later.
@@toni19292 he wasn't really being fair though he still obviously went back into it wanting to hate it, not to mention he was like 50 hours into the game and somehow still only at ch 3 which probably means he left the game on for a long time not touching it yet he still used the playtime as justification that he gave it a fair shot
TheGamingAnole55 I have no issue with him not liking it. I think you’re reading too in between the lines as I was merely letting the commenter know that Woody had already given it a second shot. Different strokes for different folks.
You may have actually convinced me to try this one. I also did not enjoy playing Xenoblade 2. Played 30 hours and it just could never grab me. But this game looks infinitely better! Great video!
@@Emily848 Doesn't really matter tbh. Don't have to be good or even competent at a game for it to grab you, and if they played 30 hours and didn't get into it, they are very unlikely to regardless of skill level.
@@Ellierienna Not always, but for games like Xenoblade 2, it really is a factor in knowing how to play the game that will determine whether you will really like it or not. For example, the auto attack in both this game and Xenoblade 2. Xenoblade 2, it cancels whenever you're on the move right? Well, when your character hits the first auto attack, move the left stick just a little, to cause you to cancel the animation, and let go of the stick as soon as you can. When they stop moving, they go back to auto attacking as soon possible, leading into the first swing again much much quicker. In Xenoblade 1's terms, it's like double auto attack, but guaranteed. This is available to you from the start of the game. As for 1, well, there's no way to do any of that, and the only thing you have left, is leaving it all up to the gems that you equip late into the game (double attack and haste). With no way to stop auto attacks when close either, means you will draw all sorts of aggro, ruining any positioning strategy you might have at the worst timing. Another difference in gameplay, is the variety and mechanics it introduces to you later on, in each game. For 1, well, fortunately, but also unfortunately, it gives you all the fundamentals, mechanics, and what you could call as combos early into the game, with not much new or variety on how to play beyond halfway. Everything kind of falls onto the niche and strengths of the characters themselves. In 2 however, you get more new game mechanics to go by later in the game, probably after fully understanding the ones it introduces you thus far, and opens up opportunities for things like combos. Including some stuff like from 1, such as Break and Topple, but with two new arts into the mix of doing big damage. There's the fusion combos with blades, that adds into more of the bonus effects, like burn damage and what not. Then along with chain attacks, is the fusion combos adding more into it, along with a very powerful final attack phase at the end, called Full Burst, after destroying 4 elemental orbs. All of this before talking about the potential possibility and fighting style with the characters, which aren't limited to a singular weapon type at all like the characters in the first Xenoblade were.
@@Ellierienna tl;dr: If you like a game that doesn't go stale, and keeps things new and fresh by adding it along the way, for things such as gameplay. Then Xenoblade 2 really does this a whole lot better than Xenoblade 1, and is definitely worth it once you end up learning how to actually play it. There's still much more to Xenoblade 2's combat that I didn't say, but again, it's very rewarding when you master it, and better than instant gratification.
@@byronlyons3548 You essentially said everything I was going to say. People like Wood really don't realize just how complex the combat system in XC2 is. It's a combat system that is difficult to master but really rewarding. One of these days, Wood is gonna have to either pay attention to the game or watch a guide to fully understand it because it is nowhere near as bad as he makes it out to be.
24:48 But Melia though! The scene where Shulk and "Seven" runs past Melia when she says "Shulk... You can...." it just Hits me in the feels in the Worst way possible. If you Thought Nia got shafted in XC2 Melia got it way worse.
Everything you described on the battle mechanics, I have been able to do in XC2. I think your opinion of XC2 will remain coloured by your early judgement. That's cool, but don't expect to reference that game and not get slagged for it.
Position is not that important any more, characters play the same (because everyone can use same blades), random blades sucks, chain attack is also not that great, no visions, battles take forever (even with lovered difficulty, cooldown times), way more easy battles, drops keep falling down or disappear. Yeah combat is the same.... the worst thing about XC2 to be exact.
@@xSpyroTheDragon Random blades don't always suck, especially if you have some of the higher ranked ones. They can really be helpful if you consider the stat boosts/skills. (Poor Shield Hammers just get completely shafted for being the worst type of blade, even the rare blades in that category.)
0:03 actually Wood, as a xeno series fan I can tell you that “xenoblade” and “xenosaga” are two very different games. Xenosaga released on the Ps2 in 2002, while xenoblade was released in 2010, a whopping 8 years later on the console of the wii. I know its hard to keep up with this type of complex stuff, but it doesn’t hurt to try now does it Wood? (This is satire)
The Zohar is the one thing all the games have in common. It’s hardly referenced in the first Xenoblade but was hinted at quite heavily in 2. That fact is, that’s what the scientist used to create both Xenoblade Chronicles 1&2’s worlds. You find this out at the end of both games. The second game showing that both worlds are actually connected. Mythra/Pyra and Malos all have the Zohar symbol as their cores. Of course it could just be a reference/Easter egg tipping its hat to the previous Xeno games. The Zohar’s ability to grant reality bending wishes is a consistent theme throughout all the Xeno games. Of course, certain conditions have to be met for it to work. Regardless, you really don’t have to play any of the previous titles. None of them are connected other than Xenoblade 1&2. Very loosely connected as well.
Honestly man I'm currently playing through this game and I absolutely love it, planning on getting xenoblade chronicles 2 after I finish this. Watching this video gave me chills honestly man good job. Love your vids.
Playing every Xenoblade game, I could say that I didn't enjoy playing Xenoblade 2 at all. It's similar to Xenoblade 1 but is to be honest awefull. It's not a sequel btw it's a whole new story. But I do know that people have enjoyed the game more than I did, alot more.
@@tastesomecheese6216 It is a sequel. The two stories connect in some interesting ways. Personally I liked the combat and the visuals much more. It felt less grindy in my opinion too.
Yeah. I really struggled with the second one. The story characters and voice acting was sporadic even though it had some great moments, the first is easier to recommend
@@tasostheteaman5484 nice, I actually got the definitive edition of 1 last week, while I dont have a comparison, Im over an hour in and Im enjoying it so far, and thats from not a big RPG buff lol
My opinion on autoattacking while moving differs, I found it extremely annoying when I’m trying to move, but my character keeps swinging at the enemy and keeps getting blocked so he barely moves. It gets frustrating for me when I’m trying to move to revive someone and I’m like “FOR FUCKS SAKES JUST MOVE STOP SWINGING AT HIM”
Love your stuff man, keep it up! Can always count on you and RGT to entertain and inform. You guys' videos come from the heart and that counts to me and so many others. Much love and keep doing you
Funnily enough, I was in the same situation when I first faced Zanza - except shulk was always a level higher than the others in my experience. So he could hit them but the others couldn't. Luckily, I was just close enough to leveling everyone else up that defeating his gaurds multiple times over leveled them up once and they could all actually hit and topple him
This game is my favorite of all time, and I first played it 5 years ago on the 3ds. Sadly I won’t be able to play the definitive edition since I don’t have a switch :(
I'm a new comer and now huge fan of the game after 60 hours! My biggest complaint I haven't seen mentioned is how much walking there is in the game. It could really have benefited from a run button or maybe even a vehicle of some sort
There are a few gems you can apply to your characters to make them run faster but overall I do agree. I love the game's environments though so it didn't really bother me that much haha.
As someone who highly enjoys XB2 combat, his gameplay clip at 19:11 physically pains me. It looks like he actually put down the controller, only occasionally getting up to hit an arts button
Yeah I know what you mean. I really like xenoblade 2's battle system as well but if you don't play it how it's supposed to work, of course it's going to feel boring.
"I'm not going to do my usual jokes and gags. I want to do this right." Thank you. Seriously, thank you. I have never touched this series due solely to a lack of both familiarity and free time, so I needed to know the real deal without sarcasm. So thank you for helping me make my decision to get it poste haste.
wait, did you just called Reyn Rease? Cause for one moment you said Reyn then another moment you said Rease. @10:24 Just weird that you have 2 versions for the same name in this review.
@@1s4iah74 yeah, I thought so too but when you go to 10:24 you can tell he meant Reyn and not Riki. It's the part when he was describing Reyn's talent art.
One silly thought: It certain is possible to hit enemies that are more than 5 levels above you, but it requires a very meticulous setup with high-level agility and night vision gems. And, it's the only way to beat some of the super bosses. Here's a video of someone taking down the final boss at Lv. 44, for example: ruclips.net/video/D7GY20aYbf8/видео.html
I agree with most of what you said, EXCEPT, the Ardanian Soldiers repeating voice lines, it goes from annoying to really good as you keep hearing it, but sadly their cooldown got nerfed hard. Sometimes i would challenge a bunch of them just to hear them.
Took me 138 hours to finish the entire game. Had to finish it on June 10th lol Started new game +. Gonna 100% it this time Edit: You're also rly under leveled. When i played, I never missed a quest and I killed errything in sight out of curiosity and to save grind time
Finished my first playthrough a few days ago. At the end of Chapter 14, I enabled Casual Mode, since there was a bossfight which did not allow me to go back and grind. I forgot to turn it off and realized that I can skip a lot of grinding in the final Chapters, so I went to know the story better. With this, I finished the game in 47 hours (I know, there is a lot more left to discover) and with level 71/72 characters. Also, did you know that you can use Shutdown on enemies that stand near a pit and let gravity do it's job? This was my favorite discovery. :)
I have to congratulate you Wood for finding the games hidden hard mode. Using as AI Melia and using Sharla once Riki is unlocked makes battles much longer and harder. In all seriousness though I'm glad you enjoyed the game and maybe give Xenoblade 2 another try, it's combat system is tough but very rewarding once you learn how to do it
What do you think of your choice so far? I’m having the exact same dilemma, I’ve bought various iterations, sequels and collections of borderlands on 360 and Xbox one over the years and not sure whether to go for it again or try this instead having never touched the franchise before.

While you CAN hit enemies with red tags, it is incredibly difficult and is reccomended to have certain gem setups like agility VI and Night Vision for jt
17:39. To be fair, that direction marker also has an arrow pointing up, which tells you the objective is above you. Imo that's better than the game showing you the path, because it encourages players to explore while also showing them exactly where the objective is in 3D space

This does make the game more fun, but it’s unclear whether I should give xc2 credit for this because its doesn’t seem like an intended mechanic

Kidding mostly that's literally how I killed every unique enemy in the game though, also endless chains with Dunban's Heat Haze + Soaring Tempest, when done in mobs you'll always have a full party meter
@@lightning0938 what? true, but this comment is talking about xeno 2 combat.
"i don't want to be punished for moving during an auto attack"
not having this is actually a humongous nerf. you can stutter step cancel in Xeno2 to attack faster and build up meter. in xc1 this would have charged talent arts faster.
I understand the line of thinking you had there, but I thought people should know that this is a common misunderstanding and it's actually a bad thing.
Just goes to show how little he actually understood the combat of the first game.
@@EgotisticalAltruist or the second game
I actually prefer the attack animation to stop while I'm moving. When trying to position Shulk behind or to the side, it's a nightmare sometimes.
He'll draw aggro and the focus of an enemy, because of attacking while moving, messing up the chance to do positional attacks.
I appreciate moving to decrease aggro, so I give the advantage to Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in that regard.
True, I figured that strategy out pretty early on in 2. Using that strategy with Mythra/Hikari/Light is pretty broken.
@@NostraSamus I think both work perfectly for their respective games. 1's keep the combat quick and fluid while 2's makes it easier to perform insane combos.

Exactly I love Xenoblade 2, and while the combat is complicated it's very fun once you figure it out

@@calebb7012 then why are you here you toolbox?
I think the reason the battles in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 can take so long is because of the combo system. Players will kill enemies much quicker if they fully understand the combat system, but it's not explained/demonstrated as well as it should be. They kind of just throw a bunch of fleeting text tutorials at you, and expect you to remember it. I don't think you can even go back to look at those tutorials either.
I highly recommend to change the button mapping:
Dpad left ZL, Dpad right ZR
Then you can move your character, camera and chose battle arts at the same time.
tried that, not liked it.
@Hkg 1 wha?
Nah, I totally agree with you as well! I loved XC1 and was totally deterred by the second one
@Hkg 1 you sure that's what people are saying? In my experience everything in xc2 is inferior outside of the world(maybe) and combat I suppose? I think the combat is more indepth
@Hkg 1 um no?? Xenoblade 1 has a fantastic story.
Also the characters in 2 are tropey garbage.

“A little disappointed..” *lighting torch* oh this don’t worry about this, please continue Woods.
The attack cancel when you move in Xenoblade 2 is actually used to animation cancel arts. There's actually a lot of depth in that game but it's silly that 1. It isn't entirely obvious and

I would like to see more of these dramatic in depth reviews from your channel.
If you don't know how the battle system works, you shouldn't complain about fights taking too long :D
Anyway, great review of Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition. I loved the original and the Remaster is SO good 👌
Goes to show how little effort Wood put into understanding how Xenoblade 2 works.
Unfortunately, he already gave it a second chance and still hated it. The game definitely starts slow, but one of my favorite games of all time
Ugh. Ive beaten XC2 and sunk 120 hours. But the story and combat were subpar in comparison to XC1
You may have actually convinced me to try this one. I also did not enjoy playing Xenoblade 2. Played 30 hours and it just could never grab me. But this game looks infinitely better! Great video!
@@Emily848 true
This is how many people are happy that BeatEmUps gave one of your fav games finally a good review!

As a Xeno- fan, I love how we have to mention that comments like this are satire because he's conditioned his fanbase to hate us.
It’s sad how you have to say it’s satire
His lack of knowledge really grinds my (xeno) gears. Ill just let myself out.

There are a few gems you can apply to your characters to make them run faster but overall I do agree. I love the game's environments though so it didn't really bother me that much haha.
The auto run button eased my pain with this
As someone who highly enjoys XB2 combat, his gameplay clip at 19:11 physically pains me. It looks like he actually put down the controller, only occasionally getting up to hit an arts button

Edit: You're also rly under leveled. When i played, I never missed a quest and I killed errything in sight out of curiosity and to save grind time
Cqllel how did you spend that long without 100 percenting it?
Took me that long to finish XC2
I still get goosebumps on this game.
