Sorry, but these aren't crumpets. At all. They look terrible, and it's not just their appearance - their texture's wrong too. Crumpets are thicker, neater, and have a lot of holes on the top. These might be considered to be a very poor pikelet, which is a relative of a crumpet, and something these resemble far closer, but even then, not a very good one. You can see the butter and honey just sliding off, rather than pooling in the holes. The worst thing is that she uses the right tools, but still manages to get something that looks like it was slopped on a baking tray. They don't fill out enough or develop the necessary air bubbles, giving you a denser, heavier thing that can't hold its toppings. If you want to eat a crumpet, please use a different recipe. The depressing thing is that this was the first result I found on google!
That's what I thought too! Anna's recipes are usually very reliable. But her "crumpets' are flat and there are not enough holes, or "eyes" as she called it. If I were her, I would delete this video and redo a proper one for crumpets.
Nobody eats more crumpets than the Brit’s, but I guess that’s because they’re a great classic British invention. Warburtons bakery makes and sells 700 million a year and that’s just one bakery of many!
These looks like what we Caribbean folks call bake. You can either fry, roast, bake it in the oven or cook it on the griddle, like Anna did. We Caribbean ppl cook the dough on a tawa and we eat it with pretty much anything. You can have it for breakfast and dinner.
Normally I love your recipes but this version of crumpets is more complex than it needs to be. I made English crumpets this morning following an easier recipe and they were delicious.
Yeah n she missed out the most important part of resting the batter n hence hardly any holes in the end product. Just adding baking powder n resting the dough wld hv made a huge difference.adding soda n tartar was a mistake
Sorry this time she really needs to visit Morocco to learn how bake crumpets there we call them (baghrir / بغرير ) : ruclips.net/video/EUgbNM4QXWs/видео.html

This looks great but there really weren't many holes in those crumpets... which would have been fine except she went on about how many holes there were... I feel gaslit.
These look great but you missed out the toasting stage at the end. And although they are cooked through, they still need toasting. It takes away the rubbery texture that you have if they arent toasted. Also it stops the butter escaping.
No, there aren't enough of the holes. They look too heavy and gummy and more like pikelets. The batter should be lighter. And crumpets need to be toasted after they are made, traditionally on a crumpet fork in front of a fire. To get them right, without scorching, is quite an art too.
These are not crumpets they look like small paratha or similar Indian bread crumpets need holes in them so the real butter or cheese or marmite sinks to the base, real English crumpets are very much different
We makes somethin similar here byes, only we calls them toutons. Mom used to cook up a scoff of them. They was right delicious with lard and molasses, especially in the winter.
Baking powder is baking soda plus cream of tartar so omit the 2 other things znd just use baking powder, the result will be pretty close. But these are realy not genuine English crumpets sorry to say
They look amazing, but I wonder if I can use whole wheat flour instead of regular white flour, and if I can't have those moulds can I cook them like pancakes?
You can cook them like pancakes, in we which case in England they are are referred to as 'pikelets'. If you dont have rings to cook them in, take the top and bottom off of tuna cans and use sandpaper or a file to rub down any sharp edges.
Bread flour w a higher protein content is better. U will need the moulds unfortunately because the batter will be too runny otherwise. Crumpets are characteristically thicker than pancakes and their holes require some depth so that the condiments can accumulate in them. Their flatter cousin is pikelets which do not require the rings.
Hi Anna, since you are in RUclips. I always give a try your recipe and all went well. 1st watched your SUGAR show in AFC. But since in Germany no AFC channel and hereby in youtube you appear 🥰. My question, I cant find cream of tartar here. What can I substitute for this? Is it lemon is ok? Thanks

Not a good example on how to make English crumpets. I make them regularly, with great success. No milk is required..No bread flour or cream of tartar either. No need to let batter sit that long, and the batter's way too thick . When cooked, I didn't see too many holes, like they're are traditionally. For best result, after making, they need to be left sitting for a day, then toasted both sides.

Thanks for giving me the idea for experimenting with different ways of cooking these. I might have to get a heavy-bottomed skillet.
Crumpets aren't supposed to be like bake lol
Can't wait to try this recipe! Thanks for sharing Chef Anna!
Please let us know how they turned out!
I agree, Anna, a cup of tea goes perfectly with these! What a delightful treat, anytime of the day! 🙏❤😄

I've never had these before and I can't wait to make them. And yes I know that they're a big thing in britain.
Well with them being British I'd expect so 😂
WHAT KIND OF SERIAL KILLER CUTS BUTTER LIKE THAT?!?!
I would love to live next door to Anna, I bet there are always some delicious leftovers 😋
These looks amazing! I can't eat them bevause of my gluten allergi. But for those og you who can eat them: Enjoy! Hugs from Norway.
(: You can make them "gluten-free"..... ☺😚
Do they turn out remotely resembling crumpets? Or more like pancakes with gf flour?
I didn't know crompets would be this easy to make. I always suck as baking bread but I'm gonna try this!!
This looks great but there really weren't many holes in those crumpets... which would have been fine except she went on about how many holes there were... I feel gaslit.
Lollll yasssss!!! Shld hv just rested the batter n uncomplicate things by just using baking powder instead of bkg soda n tartar
These look great but you missed out the toasting stage at the end. And although they are cooked through, they still need toasting. It takes away the rubbery texture that you have if they arent toasted. Also it stops the butter escaping.
Butter and honey works so well for crumpets like maple syrup for pancakes
No, there aren't enough of the holes. They look too heavy and gummy and more like pikelets. The batter should be lighter. And crumpets need to be toasted after they are made, traditionally on a crumpet fork in front of a fire. To get them right, without scorching, is quite an art too.

Agree agree agree! Short-cuts ruined the recipe. Crumpet batter requires resting time!!
You are absolutely right
Try John Kirkwoods recipe, much better.
great recipe.
Thank you!
Never heard about those but I"ll give it a try
They are a classic!
Excuse me there are no holes in these crumpets?
Anna
I am planning to make this for my mom’s Birthday!! Do you think Whole Wheat Flour would have enough protein to replace Bread Flour?
It’s great thanks for sharing 🙏💕

These are not crumpets they look like small paratha or similar Indian bread crumpets need holes in them so the real butter or cheese or marmite sinks to the base, real English crumpets are very much different
The batter is too dry, and the ring diameter is too big. What you have there is a flat pancake and no crumpet holes lol...
We makes somethin similar here byes, only we calls them toutons. Mom used to cook up a scoff of them. They was right delicious with lard and molasses, especially in the winter.
Cream of tart is the best ingredient. 😀
My favourite

I have the same question. Is there a substitute for cream of tartar??

Can u teach us to make english muffins. I love them. Thank you
Keep an eye on the channel. I think we might just have the video you're looking for. ;)
Oh yum
I really want to taste
You better start baking!
Allow the crumpet to cool overnight and mature - then toast it before serving.
Ur killin me Anna! I miss those so much... mom took us to many restaurants at hotels when we lived in Europe...yum...Europe was fabulous back in the early sixties! No western restaurants, and Europe looked like Europe...
Now you can make these in the comfort of your own home!
Very good
Beautiful cooking channel my new friend
Thank you for watching!
Already sub beautiful channel
Look's Really Good!
They look nice! Here in the UK we have baking powder and bicarbonate of soda, which do I use?
Baking powder’s best. Baking soda requires an acidic activator which crumpets do not call for.
(: Thank you!!!!!..... ☺😚 I don't think I ever heard of these!!!!! Are they an English (England Tradition)????? ☺😚 They sound "scrumptious"!!!!!..... lol..... ☺😚😶

Can I do it without tartar?? :0
In fact u can!! Use bkg powder n let the batter rest for 2 hrs. Way better results!

Early again:) Looks yum!
Sorry but your crumpets haven’t enough holes and are a tad bit flattish. You ought to have rested the batter for at least an hour or two.
Can I omit the yeast
Which holes?
I did not see many holes?
My food scale must be way off. i occasionally try both the measure and the weight . my scale is coming up around 177g for the 1.5 cups.
you do not have enough holes in the surface of the crumpet
Ghastly! These aren’t crumpets - but they are a right mess! Please American friends, do not judge crumpets by what you see here. If we still put people in the tower I would recommend Anna.
Bwahahaha
Not enough holes !
you are the best . تو عالی هستی
No British person thinks crumpets are breakfast fare. They're for tea-time.
All purpose flour
2 teaspoons sugar
Instant yeast
Cream of tarter
Water
Milk
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Salt
Tart rings
Oil
Pour the crumpet mixture inside the rings
Butter
Garnish with honey
No holes in the crumpets? They’re flat aswell. You’re an amazing baker but I think you have missed these.
👍👍😋😋
WARBYS £1-50p per pack
Not crumpets, maybe a poor version of a pikelet. Too thin not a lot of holes, (should be a lot bigger hole size as well)
They are pancakes
Is there an English recipe
WHAT holes?
Why cream of tartar?
If you were to say 'a warm crumpet is one of my favourite morning treats' to an Englishman, he would, in all likelyhood, crease up laughing. It may be an age thing though, admitedley.
Thanks 🌴🍉 jocina Kujna 🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉🍉
I'm sorry, I don't have draws full of flour in my kitchen 🤔
Why didnt you mix the water and milk together like the english do ????
Sacrilege. This is not a crumpet. Get a crumpet recipie from a brit instead.
Beautiful woman!
Write ingredients on screen
Not a good example on how to make English crumpets. I make them regularly, with great success. No milk is required..No bread flour or cream of tartar either. You don't flip
thats the worse crumpet ive ever seen, has no holes and too many unnecessary ingredients 👎🏾
😋😋😋😋🌹🌹🌹
They look nothing like crumpets :/
Hmmmm not perfect. Not enough holes. Sorry I’m a Brit and this isn’t that good a recipe.
I literally wanted to scream!!!
.
What a shame you don’t explain the types of flour you use. Do you use strong flour in your recipe?
Bread flour in North America is what they call strong flour in the UK at last that is my understanding from Paul Hollywood.
Yeah u need a higher protein content
Sorry but not nice and not like English crumpets 😢
