I live in the city. The odds of me ever getting near a horse is almost zero. But Steve and Tanya are such lovely, caring people that these videos not only teach me a lot I may never really need to know, they warm my heart and renew my hope in humanity. Just knowing that such compassionate people exist is heart warming and inspiring. The scenery is also very beautiful and peaceful. City folk don't get to enjoy that beautiful scenery. Steve, your love for the horse itself and your understanding that it's never the horse's fault is just beautiful! God bless you both!

@@terrifrye2803 As horsemen, were always learning. Every horse teaches us something. We just have to listen to what they are telling us, listen to the history the owners tell us and go from there. Every issue is a symptom of a cause. No matter what the issue is. And what may work to correct a similar issue on one horse may not work with another, so you have to know what you are doing and be flexible, think fast on your feet, and come up with a plan B, C, D or even E sometimes to find out what works for the horse you are working on. Always remembering that no animal, be it a horse or dog, learns anything from pain or fear. We keep our minds open to Learning, and we always want to learn more from as many people as we can, so that we can help and show others what we know so that they can also do it in a safe manner. If you close your mind to Learning, and you say I already know everything, you are limiting yourself and blocking yourself and your journey with horses. And you end up back doing things with horses that cause them pain, so they don't trust any human at all. And a horse that doesn't trust people, they are dangerous horses, same as orphan foals can be dangerous horses if not taught correctly at a young age. A foal is born with a brain that is ready to be trained. After 1 hour, it is on its feet nursing and able to run with the herd in the wild. So why do people think they can't start training a young horse things. They think this because they think like a human, not as a prey animal does. Stay Safe and have a great week ahead. (bit late😅) 100% other videos with equine have also shown that while it was good people doing it for a good reason, the animal only felt pain and fear and unfortunately that led to problems really at nobodies fault bar sometimes previous owners that caused the animal to be in such a sever condition. Like a more recent one with a couple who rescued all the horses and donkeys they owned. The "problem," cob like horse went through a lot of treatments and rehabilitation because of previous .. care, and then had a very big mistrust of people at no real fault of the rescuers and personnel helping with rehabilitation. The horse just didn't know people were helping it by that stage.

Hello Steve - from Queensland Australia. Another way to do the 'quick release' so as the horse is totally free very quickly is to commence your 'knot' with a loop. Make a loop in your rope, pass the loop through your 'ring tie' (fence or tree branch) and then commence the tie as you did it. Doing a 'quick release' or 'safety knot' in this manner completely releases the horse in an emergency whilst still allowing you control of the rope. Throughly enjoy watching your videos. Tremendous effort.

One of the concepts in this video that I try to emphasis is that a session is never a set length of time. Personally it can be as much as an hour and a half, or as little as fifteen minutes. They can learn things in just a few minutes, and as Steve said, you have to know when to quit. If you don't, things can go downhill.

They also get anxious during molt and hormone seasons. these are parrot facts that should be known prior to judgement.

Safe travels! What another excellent resolution - such a super horse & HE, Rio, responded so quickly to Steve's suggestions & desires - it was brilliant when he was ground-tied & gave his foot with no drama, very touching. Dan did a great job of trimming his feet & I suppose for the first time in that little lad's life he had a painless trim-experience, just what was needed. I did feel Gemma might be lifting Rio's legs a bit high & tight, I've known quite a lot of horses weren't keen. Do hope everything will work out for them now & his leg comes good - he looked to moving very well, lovely boy. CONGRATULATIONS!

I feel you and Rio are a good personality match...he gets you..he's a big 2 year old...pretty calm....I see him as a lighter grey horse as he ages...I used to pack my hoof pick in my pocket and file ...when I fed I'd go around and clean feet and file a bit....at least once a week....but always pick them up daily and check em.......it became no big deal, and kept their feet nice...Rio is a good boy...thanks for showing us your nice bikes too....and the African grey, Mack story..... Love young picture of you two..thanks for sharing your knowlege.

Can’t wait to see the follow up on this poor gelding.
As someone who’s had knee surgery 6 months ago I think based on my own recovery I would advise Gemma not to lift that foot too high. Rio’s range of motion may be improving, but I can tell you that big of a stretch is very painful. If she keeps doing that he’s going to revert back to the “people picking up my feet=pain mentality.

Such a smart boy he just never had the guidance that your giving him. I think he seemed mostly just insecure or unsure of himself and the second you showed him he was like oh ok that's how it all goes...I got it 😁 great video!!!

I'm still at the beginning of this video about 14 minutes in, and I'm watching Steve talk about the amount of pain this horse has been in due to the deformity is he was born with and subsequent surgery- and I can't help wondering why the owner is lifting his front leg so sharply that the knee is bent that much. That's a huge bend on a joint previously operated on- you'd think that sharp of a bend would cause sigificant pain just like in humans and other animals that go through joint surgeries. Now I realize the side shown is not the surgery side- but I also think that the other side must have stiffened during all this too. And I was wincing watching it. I'm looking forward to finishing this video, but I hope that that's something Steve noticed and addressed.
Ok finally was able to finish. Wow...what a transformation. Rio is the perfect model for how pain can influence behavior. It was very cool watching him learn, and wow he learns fast. Smart boy. I also think he's a kind boy deep down- he needs a good leader but also needs to be out of pain. His walk seemed smoother after his trim. I hope the owners follow up with the training you started as well as supportive therapies to strengthen that leg as well as the other 3; the other 3 have already taken on extra strain during surgery and recovery. He is young so the potential to heal more is there.
Glad you got your old parrot back; I think he'll be very happy to be back with you.

I've never owned a horse or pony. It was only when our youngest daughter got her first pony that I ever got involved with one. I always had a fear of horses, but lost a lot of that by helping my daughter with hers. I absolutely love horses, and my love came from reading Black Beauty 2 or 3 times, when I was a young girl. I love watching how you work with these beautiful animals, your patience, love and dedication. I just wish there were more people like you. Thank you for all you do.

My favourite video thus far. It was like wearing a pair of fluffy comfy slippers. I love the way the horse gives Steve permission to lift his left leg at 1.27 hours. I could almost see it written on his face saying "come on then, I trust you and want your respect"🥰

Dan, I’m admiring the beautiful, rounded, balanced hooves you’ve given Rio! I especially love that you consulted with his Vet/Surgeon before trimming on that left front hoof.
Gosh, I’ve seen so many narrowed oval, pointy hoof trims lately it breaks my heart.
Steve, I think this is one of my favorite vids. It was like Rio was waiting for you to free him from his pain behavior, you bonded so quickly.
    Smart, intuitive colt.
-and such a sweet beauty! I love the way you give horses space -
around yourself, the horse, and your close-up work is mostly done
outside, where you give the horse the security of room to move his feet, if he needs to.
    As always, wonderful work,
and the gift of many happy years ahead for Rio and his human family!

Hi Steve, I just wanted to let you know that I am very impressed with you. You are one of the few people, trainers included, that actually know how to pick up a horses back feet. Most people just go to the back foot n reach behind the foot n leg n grab it n pick it up. The proper way to pick up a back foot is to do like you are doing n reach on the front of the foot, kinda reaching around with your hand, taking your hand n grabbing the back of the leg n foot n then picking up the foot. If you just grab the back of the foot, a horse can draw up his foot n cow kick you. By reaching around the front of the back leg, there is pressure on the front of the foot n leg n the horse normally won’t try to kick because of the pressure on the front of his foot n leg. I have been training horses for 40 some years n very few people know how to pick up a back foot properly. Bravo to you Steve.

I want to ask you about the racing industry & how steve young natural horsemanship can work so much better even in a fast paced horse racing industry with very little patience.so many different scenarios to your average horse owner.very challenging to say the least!

I was out with him every minute i could, he would laugh and call me Debbie D, Debbie dirty face. Im 70 now and i still miss him every day. You remind me of him, without the red hair, which i inherited.

Love you all to pieces, God bless you!!!! I think there might have been an editing snafu because for example the footage at 57:00 into the video and footage at about 1:25:00 are duplicate, I think. I didn’t keep track of exactly when the duplication began and ended; I think at 1:38:00 it was all new again. Didn’t make the video any less interesting but I thought you’d want to know. Thank you, you deserve every bit of our love and gratitude!

I would've loved to learn how to do this horsemanship when I worked at the horse rescue centre, it would of helped a lot of those ponies. Keep up the incredible work!
