palonero LOL!!!! When I played in a Prog band back in the 90's the bass player would occasionally ask me to come up with an Alex chord. In fact, the first time we met, we started playing In the End at the exact same time - kinda spooky!!!!!!
this is guitar geek porn- watching a classic being played by the guy who made the song, no camera panning away, no switching to other angles- just pure watching him shred. I think I have waited my whole life for this lol- wonder if there is one like this for Limelight too...
luminositymusic BrianPRickard- Yup, kinda freaky. Maybe the body’s resting on something. Or he’s got a bespoke stand for it? Or, a rig like Billy F’s: Alex takes a step back for clearance..then Taadaa! he spins it 360 degrees like a propeller, grabs the neck, plays: not one beat skipped. That’s probly it...
Anyone notice when he played the intro riff how his fingers almost seemed to hover above the strings? He seems to play with a very light touch, yet precise and deliberate.
@Rongle Bringer Interesting... I did notice how he was using his pinky where most guitarists would normally let their ring finger rest on that first string to change that note. His method gives it a bit more prominence.
I think its so he doesn’t pull the strings off the guitar making a high pitch sound. When i played this one of my first times, thats what happened to me.
I Agree. Alex Lifeson is a Beast and he is: Total Precision, when Performing Live. He plays all the parts on the recording Exactly ( or better ). This guy is a Monster on Guitar ( and a great guy too ) Not a conceited Rock Star. He remained humble & down-to-earth.
Untrepid One Rush is known as one of the best of all time, but Alex as a guitarist is super underrated. when you hear or see people talking about the greatest guitatist of all time, you rarely hear Alex Lifeson in there. Its usually EVH, Slash, Randy Rhoads, Dimebag etc.
His talent as a guitar player is only outshines by how nice and humble he is. Proof that not everyone looses their mind with success and goes down the path of bitter excess.
they rated you at like 98 of top 100 guitar players???? you are in the top ten for sure. lead and rhythm not many can do. you and your chaps are the best band ever!!!!
To be fair, he's been playing it repeatedly since 1980. It's not even a matter of being a capable guitarist at that point, just good old fashioned muscle memory.
his capability lies in the fact that he has degenerative arthritis and can still pull it off. The guy sails through a complex sequence of riffs that most people will never play in their prime.
one of my favorite parts is how smoothly the transitions are - so seemless. To go from a rock to reggae and back is masterful. Masterful because it sounds natural, not jarring.
Alex Lifesone is one of the MOST UNDERRATED ROCK GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME. HIS UNIQUE SOUND COMBINED WITH. JUST INCREDIBLE LIVE PERFORMANCES RANKS HIM AS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME,
The way his fingers dance across the frets in the opening is unreal, like how the hell do you get that dexterous and precise, this man is the stuff of legends
I was joking people GEZZZ!!!!!! I know who Alexs Lifeson is I have been a RUSH Fan since 1979 I have seen them 7 times going back to the Signals tour and I have yet to hear anybdy to play it like him!!!!!
got you beat, saw them on the "Permanent Waves" tour. $9.90 for floor seat 30 rows back. Just awesome. The opening bad was also a three piece Canadian band called FM. It was my first concert ever so I was confused when they started to play and I didn't know any of their songs. I thought they were Rush. Lol
+Scott Grasser - I also caught the Permanent Waves tour, Winnipeg Arena, April 1, 1980. Saga opened that night. And, yes, it was also my first concert ever!
I love that Alex does these its so awesome to see the actual guy who wrote it showing you how to play it and to watch him up close is the best if you want to learn these songs :-)
I think Rush was one of the very first groups containing ALL mega-super-talented musicians that was able to achieve huge commercial success, besides Yes of course and maybe just a few others - but Yes focused a bit more on "musicians' music" while Rush somehow brought much of the same previously noncommercial style into the mainstream. The fact that the drummer was also the main lyricist is just a great added bonus. I never was much of a Rush fan - but as a published songwriter and musician myself, it's impossible for me to ignore absolute jaw-dropping talent when I hear it.
a very clever allusion to Sounds of Silence. Rush changed 'prophet' to 'profit' and 'sounds of silence' to sounds of salesmen'. Argh! Why can't I write a lyric like that???
Richard Wagner-Agreed!! Lyrics worth selling yer granny for (maybe). Neil wrote some brilliant songs..gotta be a natural talent made huge by voracious reading if Good literature combined with plain old Hard Work. Miss you, Neil.😢
Rush was, is and will always be an amazing band that clearly reflects the connection of 3 extremely talented individuals that bonded and created some of the most amazing music in the world. They have brought us so much and have shared their art, talent and brotherhood while maintaining a high level of humility and professionalism. Thank you for the incredible music and the unforgettable memories !!! Greetings from Texas.
am i the only one who listens to this song and remembers a different time from our youth i was 13 in 1977 when i 1st heard 2112 and lost my freekin mind... I swear I cant help but some times shed a tear at the simply majestic badassed kickassedness of this music, and the fact that there's been virtually nothing nearly as good like it in 30 years...
Something looked strange, but I couldn't figure it out until almost the end: He's not wearing a strap - the guitar is on a stand. I don't know if that was for the camera, but it was interesting. Each member of Rush is an apex musician in their own right, and they always seem so down-to-Earth in interviews. Amazing... :)
Wow, that is sick! During one arpeggio he's casually looking away! Any practicing guitarist want to see the importance of barre chords, this is a perfect example!!
I've watched him play this through the ages. Alex, I know everyone has heaped their platitudes on you. I just simply have enjoyed your music and concerts, my man.
Cool name first off! This is such a difficult riff. Alex is basically doing a drum fill on the guitar. They were so tight rhythmically that they could pull this stuff off. You'll find it in YYZ, right around :37 too. Vintage Rush magic.
Rush is the ALL TIME BEST 3 MAN BAND in the history of music!! Best bass player(+sings and keys, w/feet sometimes) Geddie Lee, and The professor on the drum kit.... WOW! nuff said
Nice -- SO much better than decades ago when the only way to learn this was by trial-and-error and Guitar Player transcriptions. Would be even better with a splitscreen of both hands during the lead/solo.
I was a junior in high school, had been fortunate enough to have seen the Hemispheres tour when they came through Dallas, Texas, and then they released Permanent Waves and my mind was blown for the rest of my life........ I have had the privilege of seeing them play many times, and I am so grateful for that!!!
How cool is this?? RUSH is an all time excellent band. Kudos to Geddy, Alex and Neil. You guys are slaying it!! And have done so for many years. Thanks for what you do and for being a part of my existence. "One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises. Shatter the illusion of integrity.". RUSH is no more. ......Long Live RUSH!!!!
Do you think since he's obviously played this song a billion plus times, that as he's playing he's thinking of other shit he has to do during the day? Like I just think all of them are on auto pilot :) NO ONE will ever beat the 3 Wise Men
Dale daddy I was just thinking to myself "Self, his Gibson Les Paul Signature Model (make that a "Double Signature") is truly nice, but I miss the '90s period when he was playing primarily PRS CE models... he could truly get heavy, but his "Low-Gain Distortion" and "Clean" Tones were just fantastic. Plus, I thing they looked great on him visually... when I think of Alex playing live, the first visual that comes to mind is him with a PRS. ...plus, the idea of the sheer amount of wood touted from a Les Paul for a Floyd Rose (as opposed to the relatively small amount for a Kahler top-mounted Trem) just makes me very sad." 😨 And yes, his Signature H&K Tri-Amps looked great and sounded even better! 👍🏼
I think this guy maybe the closest cover.of this song I have seen poasted on youtube,
You don't cover your own songs... *Shake my head*
please tell me youre not serious
Please tell me you don't think he was.
He is giving a demo on the mechanics of the song. He is playing along with the original song for context... OY
did you see the part he messed up on??
Alex is right up there as one of the top rock guitar players of all time..people who really understand, know how good he is..!
yes we do...
we sure do... That's why we're here :-)
amen!
.....that was epic .....love Alex and the boys ........they've been thru a lot .....especially Neil ......cheers from Mark
kid gloves yep . Thats true !!
That guy plays just like Alex Lifeson!
Yeah, but can he invent a chord?
palonero
LOL!!!! When I played in a Prog band back in the 90's the bass player would occasionally ask me to come up with an Alex chord. In fact, the first time we met, we started playing In the End at the exact same time - kinda spooky!!!!!!

"I think I have waited my whole life for this" Yup, I had tears in my eyes. Incredible.
Kees Kapteyn noticing this guitar was floating?
luminositymusic BrianPRickard- Yup, kinda freaky. Maybe the body’s resting on something. Or he’s got a bespoke stand for it? ......No David Lee Roth getting between you and the guitar ......
he even looks like Alex Lifeson...
Hey, I was noticing that! Maybe he could make some extra cash as a stunt double :)
I think it really is him tho
He is Alex Lifeson
Anyone notice when he played the intro riff how his fingers almost seemed to hover above the strings? He seems to play with a very light touch, yet precise and deliberate.
like a good piano player their fingers tickle the keys and the strings literally dancing on them and that opening riff is fast and hard to play :-)
He's actually playing air guitar.
Rick Hankins ; I think he pantomimed this
@Rongle Bringer Interesting... I did notice how he was using his pinky where most guitarists would normally let their ring finger rest on that first string to change that note. His method gives it a bit more prominence.
I think its so he doesn’t pull the strings off the guitar making a high pitch sound. When i played this one of my first times, thats what happened to me.
Wow. It's such a difficult song to play, but he makes it look easy. He's a true virtuoso.
Most underrated of all time.
one of the best ax men of all time and maybe the most under rated
I Agree. Alex Lifeson is a Beast and he is: Total Precision, when Performing Live. He plays all the parts on the recording Exactly ( or better ). This guy is a Monster on Guitar ( and a great guy too ) Not a conceited Rock Star. He remained humble & down-to-earth.
Totally agree. And he probably doesn't even care. I can't wrap my head around his talent.
Scruffy Jones i
Untrepid One Rush is known as one of the best of all time, but Alex as a guitarist is super underrated. when you hear or see people talking about the greatest guitatist of all time, you rarely hear Alex Lifeson in there. Its usually EVH, Slash, Randy Rhoads, Dimebag etc.
Slash???? He's just a schoolboy compared to Alex.
No one plays guitar like Alex Lifeson. He is and always will be one of my favorite guitar players.
Alex, if you're reading this, please never die 🥺
His talent as a guitar player is only outshines by how nice and humble he is. Proof that not everyone looses their mind with success and goes down the path of bitter excess.
They almost lost their record contract until they came up with 2112! The rest is history.
I love Alex's look at the end, it's like he's saying "and there you go....it's easy."
they rated you at like 98 of top 100 guitar players???? you are in the top ten for sure. lead and rhythm not many can do. you and your chaps are the best band ever!!!!
Top ten, no...top 25...definitely
98 my ass top ten for sure
The dynamic of all three overshadowed his greatness,
Rolling Stone put him at #98, but Guitar World out Alex Lifeson #8
@@vaibanez17 rolling stone is smelly garbage
the way he bobs his head while playing that riff like it's the easiest thing in the world... god. damn you, lifeson.
turnleftaticeland Ikr, it's absurd
turnleftaticeland Well guys....he is is Alex Lifeson afterall.
Alex=guitar god
Wow.
This album was released when I was 15 years old.
Absolutely changed our (friends and I) lives.
one of my favorite parts is how smoothly the transitions are - so seemless. To go from a rock to reggae and back is masterful. Masterful because it sounds natural, not jarring.
I was annoyed by this song the first time I heard it. Second time around it moved close to the top of my favorites and remains there today.
That's how it happens sometimes.
This song is a gem
Brought tears to my eyes. I thought I could play the guitar before I saw this up close. Unbelievable
One of the most uplifting songs ever written
Alex Is so deliberate and precise in his strumming, fingerwork, etc.
Alex Lifesone is one of the MOST UNDERRATED ROCK GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME. HIS UNIQUE SOUND COMBINED WITH. JUST INCREDIBLE LIVE PERFORMANCES RANKS HIM AS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME,
this is a master class of rock guitar....the riffs, the chords, the rhythm, the solo...all of it. such an under appreciated legend!
11 people shattering the illusion of integrity....
Man. Unbelievable. Best guitarist ever in my book.
The way his fingers dance across the frets in the opening is unreal, like how the hell do you get that dexterous and precise, this man is the stuff of legends

SW627 Jeez what a "MARY"
Mary Wiggins people don't understand sarcasm - Rush on!!
When you include a tag you kill the funny. It's like explaining jokes. People either get it or they don't.
+Scott Grasser - I also caught the Permanent Waves tour, Winnipeg Arena, April 1, 1980. Saga opened that night. And, yes, it was also my first concert ever!
Awesome guitar!
Thanks Alex for the career, the music and giving back this coolness for the kids with dreams sitting next to their amp.
I don't think this man gets enough credit.
I love that Alex does these its so awesome to see the actual guy who wrote it showing you how to play it and to watch him up close is the best if you want to learn these songs :-)
This is the song that turned me into a Rush fan in 1980, and have been ever since. It simply blew me away.
*OMG MR. LIFESON YOU ARE A MASTER. THANK YOU FOR SO MANY YEARS OF BEAUTIFUL MUSIC. GOD BLESS YOU.*
Nice , This is One of Their All Time Greats , Love This Song , Thanks Alex !!
Alex Lifeson = Guitar God
Out of this world !!!
Plus he looks like a genuinely humble down to earth person who always has time for fans
Imagine… it started in a Church basement in Toronto. Thanks for all the great years of great music and memories.
How amazing of Alex to do this for aspiring guitarist! Hvalla Alex!!!
What could be cooler than this? Thank you to whoever got Alex to sit down for this video.
What a killer tune... How could 7 people down-vote this ?!?
Yeah, no shit. Mastery.
Haters hate. Al makes is look easy. He studied music at university. As did his band mates. Canada is! America is too!
They're 28 *ssh*les right now
30 thumbs down to the 28 assholes who gave this a thumbs down
creativeguitarstudio they are the dudes in the music store trying to play the beginning and know how much they suck.
Wow some humans are just wired for SOUND! Amazing! Thank you!

What a nice guy! Thanks Alex, that was lovely.
This guy is just so unassuming! Absolutely refreshing.
Muscle memory take 300 and one. I've always marveled with how seamless his playing is on this song :)
so underrated... love hearing him play
This guy’s covers are always spot on.
Echoes with the sound of salesmen, ... of salesmen ....OH SALESMEN!!!
Who knew salesmen could be so artistic... :,]
a very clever allusion to Sounds of Silence. Rush changed 'prophet' to 'profit' and 'sounds of silence' to sounds of salesmen'. Argh! Why can't I write a lyric like that???

Love the closeup of the fretboard and his hands. Notice the fret wear - a guitar well loved.

The definition of Guitar God. I wonder at how many thousands of times he has played this song over the years.
There's never been a better band.
And there will never be...
@@jeffcharlton9660 True enough, sadly.

Matt D totally...reminds me of Xanadu

My favorite part of the song.
Yep... and seamlessly played. Nothing like 15/8 to brighten your day.

awesome

RnR Hall of Fame ceremony!
We get it
Love this song. Great Album 1980.
Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Lifeson... All in the same league and will never be equalled
David Gilmore as well.....
i literally spread my arms out in worship to this
Whatever. Another RUclips guitar teacher who will never make it in a real band.
You are kidding right? This man is a guitar legend.
I think the comment had some sarcasm to it...
no, not sarcasm. Jest, facetious, or joking.
big difference.. LOL
this comment made me blow a little bit more air out of my nose than usual
probably some high school dropout
There's a great lesson right there. You don't need to get your frets dressed every ten minutes. The guitar WILL work with fret wear
Nothing like watching the master do this!
かっこいい
I wonder how many times Alex has played this song since 1980. Probably one of *the* best songs ever written & played by any band, anywhere.
with a little more practice and this guy might have something......
fasteddie4145 lol
No chance ...he plays it nothing like I do
Man i love this guy, he seems to just breathe music and he really knows his stuff. I love these interviews
I vote for this to become the anthem of Canada. I have a cover, too *cough cough* in case anyone may care xD
Such power and precision. Just pure talent.
God
No Alex !
ACELLOFAWARENESS I'll check it out!!!!! 🤘

The best triple intro to any rock song ever! How can anyone not love this?
Alex playing a PRS through an H and K triamp....ah...those were the days.

Mr. Alex Lifeson seems like such a down to earth guy!! ....cheers!!

F*** off with your down thumb how's that
Wow! A legend.
Please tell me he at least warmed up first.
I love the enthusiasm coming out in the last bars.
So well played.
too much.thats it I quit guitar.
Much underrated guitarist ... Great piece of music
Oh yeah, real Rush, pre-Moving Pictures. Permanent Waves was the last great Rush album and one of the best.
You think? Didn't notice that, maybe you're right. I just know I liked it more.
Yeah Signals did have a certain enjoyability. Permanent Waves just seemed to have more of a powerful feel. The sound seemed to lighten up after that.
Real Rush? That's just ignorant of 30 years of great music. Your loss I guess.
Agreed! 1980-83 was about the end.
Rock and Roll, baby! The old dude has STILL got it.
This video was shot like 10 years ago
