  • This time Tips on Tuesday - Diesel on a boat - all you need to know to avoid the trouble and what we learned along the way. What to do and NOT to do, where to get fuel, which filters to use. How to avoid expensive disasters and what spares to carry aboard long voyages. Very applicable in 3rd world countries... where diesel quality varies and refueling facilities sparse... @SailingAquarius

    I recommend using Fuel Doctor diesel conditioner in your tanks as well, it will disperse any condensation into the fuel preventing fungal growth in the tanks and those Mr Funnel water separating funnels are worth their weight in gold when refuelling from drum supplies as found in many of the smaller pacific islands

    Starting a video was like listening to the captain being prepared to jump overboard.
    Good filter information and good advice keeping the tank full. Why are the men always the captains though I always find the ladies the smartest and most able. 🙏🍒🎄

    Hi may seem a stupid question but how do you not make the mistake of buying bad fuel.Yes ask around for advice,i saw so many bad places in asia and Srilanka .
    Love the Tuesday tips and uploads.
    Well done you two 🙏😉

      First, when I need to get fuel, I buy fuel from a vendor that sell a LOT OF IT. Never try to save a few cents per L, it may end up costing you $1000's. I always buy the best FUEL available. I ask all the sailors I know where to get fuel, and where not to get fuel. Always filter you fuel that goes into your tank unless you really trust the source. All the best.... Take care, and thanks for the message!

    Hi! Diesel stabilizer additives can also be a good option as well, particularly when not running the engine for extended periods of time....
    Cheers

      Do these biocide / stabilisers actually work ?

      Al Cooper I have had good luck with them. I did ten years living aboard and used them regularly...

      Additives do indeed work well. In the Med you cannot anymore get diesel without biodiesel added to it. This means that you have to use additives. All the time! Regards from Switzerland. Silvano

    Hi Ken. I think ships use a fuel polisher where the diesel is cleaned by centrifugal force, just before being consumed. Maybe there's one for yachts?

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  4 года назад

      Like Tony said, fuel polishers are available for boats. I have seen a Super Maramu similar to Aquarius with a polishing system on board. The polishing system consisted of 1) a big fuel filter, the kind that the large trucks use, 2) a hose that pulls fuel off the bottom of the tank, 3) a pump that pumps the fuel off the bottom of the tank and through the filter, and 4) a return hose that replaces the clean fuel to the top of the tank. Happy Holidays

    Hi! How do YOU check if the fuel is good or bad before you fill up?
    Cheers!

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  4 года назад

      You can't! But if you aren't 100 percent sure about the source, filter it. Merry Christmas.

      You could do what is called “clear & bright” inspection. Before putting fuel into your tank, put some in a large clear glass jar and let it settle. There shouldn’t be any sediment or water collecting on the bottom of the jar and should be clear (not cloudy) when held up to the sun or bright light. If you are pumping a large quantity of fuel, you can do another check halfway through.

  • @franktroy9931

    You said a few times always buy good fuel. Since you can't really see it as you fill your tank how do you know its good or bad.?

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  4 года назад

      Do your best to find out the source of the fuel.

  • @hofmeyrscholtz1069

    Hi guys, I have a rookie question: how do you check if its good or bad diesel?

    • @SailingAquarius
      @SailingAquarius  4 года назад

      First, look at the clarity of the fuel.... Make sure you buy the fuel from a trustworthy source. If you don't know, ask other sailors. Don't trust someone to fill your jerry cans and return with the fuel. Go to the fuel station, and make sure you get what you what you pay for. In Indonesia there are two types of diesel fuel, and it's wise to get the more expensive type. Happy New Year

      It's actually quite difficult to get diesel to ignite, so probably more of a hazard to slip over in it :-)
