Great 👍 very informative video Love it love it love it Thanks captain for the great information and video editing 👍. Keep them coming please Safe sailing
It is nice if you are an electrical engineer. Otherwise a long learning curve. We are not sailors but travel with an off road travel trailer in western US. The only difference is we are on dry land more or less. I have 1,200 watts solar and 1000 amp hr. lithium batteries. For the most part it works fine but once in a while I need to fire up my 2,000 watt Honda generator to top off my batteries. We have overcast skies and trees that reduce our solar charging. My wife will not let me sail so a travel trailer it is. Ken, keep up the good work.
Very glad to hear that you liked this video and was able to get something educational out of it. Just keep traveling, it will keep you young! Fair Winds
I have genuinely learned so much from you, and I am so grateful. Although I have no boat, and I am living in an apartment in Stockholm, but maybe one day I can be prepared to do the jump like you do.
Love your videos. On the alternator, if it has a remote battery voltage sense, you can do what I do. I use a Nordkyn Designs VRC which is a voltage reference device. It basically uses signals from the BMS to then control the alternator by adjusting the field voltage. Most importantly, it will stop the charge when the LFP batteries are charged. Best wishes to you both.
I have a device that does just this, but not sure I want to install it. I am thinking that a simple switch on the field so that I can turn off if I so desire would be plenty good. Cheers.
@@SailingAquarius Yes electrician it is true but I don’t do the math every day so it was good refreshing knowledge. Enjoyed seeing how it all works on your boat. Yes, and still a bit jealous! Lol
Instead of removing alt belts just put a on off switch on the field circuit to the alt . That way the alt just freewheels with no load on the Volvo . When you want the alt to produce power just flip the field switch to on , you will hear the Volvo load and loose a few rpm’s.
Thanks, I was going to talk about things to protect the alternator, and switching the field on or off to control the output, but the video got a bit long. Two people commented on putting a switch on the field... I think I will do it in the next few months. Thanks for the tip!
Hey Ken I love you videos and appreciate the effort it takes to make them. This may not be the place for this comment and I apologize if it is not. I bought an echo pilot based on your review and after 18 months of service, 30 months from purchase it doesn’t work. I am 6 months out of warranty. I shipped it off from Grenada and echo pilot tells me the transmission box is broken and needs replacement. I asked for some sort of discount on the replacement and they gave me the nine of hearts. Lol. I am shocked at this poor customer service with the product having a complete failure in such a short time. I know it is not your fault but I thought you should know my experience with echo pilots customer service. Thanks for your videos and especially tips on Tuesdays.
We have had no problems with ours for the past 3 years. The unit that was 20 years started having a problem (lines in the screen), but after we replaced the screen 3 years ago.... No problems.... The Transducer can be damaged if you run into something. We had to replace our transducer after we hit a log off the coast of Columbia 6 years ago. Not much you can do about that, and I carry a spare transducer so that I can replace it if I hit something. The Transducer costs about $500, but a good spare to have. Would like to know more about your problem, send a message from our website. I will look into the problem.
Hey Ken I hope you two are well. I tried to send you a message through your web site and it wouldn’t go. It said there was a temporary problem sending it ? Just wanted to let you know it wasn’t working. Like you need another thing not working. Lol
Another great Tips on Tuesday, really good explanation / examples for a topic that can be confusing for some. thanks for sharing. did you get a new dodger/bimini and plexiglass? looks brand new! cheers
Ken, Have you considered installing a switch to open the field circuit of your house bank alternator? Seems easier than removing belts, and less wear on the threads of the alternator case. I enjoy your videos very much, Mike.
Yes, and I was going to put this topic in the video, but the video starting getting too long. But, the other reason that I just disconnect the belts is basic ware and tare on the alternator. It just sits there most the time without moving. I may put a switch on the field at some point. Thanks, for the comment, we think alike!
That Matervolt box is my back up inverter. Works some of the time, but not all of the time. That's why it will soon be replaced with a proper Victron unit. Cheers
Great 👍 very informative video

Great info explained in an understandable way 🇨🇦❤
Glad it was helpful!

Just take the Red Pill, and step off the cliff into the water. It's warm, deep and enjoyable. Cheers

Glad it was helpful! Still the same bimini and plexiglass we got years ago...:) Good quality lasts looong time...

I am not clear on whether the old Mastervolt unit is being used or not. Just not sure. Thanks.
