The fact that Emily wasn't attracted to Edmund not only in the physical aspect but as a man she knew in her heart he wasn't the man she wanted for a husband. The fact that he constantly pursued her eventually turned her off and I personally believed that it was financial gains for himself. I admire Emily for standing up for her rights not only as a married woman but as a woman, period! Do you know whatever happened to Edmund? Great investigating, presenting, backstory, illustrations, photos and videos, too. Take care 🦋
Yes indeed! We thnk she had a lucky escape and without holding fast and iwthout then support of her family, she wold habve ended up possibly on news of the times with her sad demise! He must have seen her as an easy traget as an unwordly spinster with no father to protect her and all that money. We think she would have died in new Zeland and that that was the intention. It would have bene A LOT of money for him. Good on you Emily!👍🙌
I agree, this is how it all came together in my logic, 😂 too much noise and action from my toddlers during “nap time” even with airpods that I had to listen twice! 👍🏻
Egads!!! What a story! You know, the more I learn about the past, and how horribly women were treated, I can understand why some women don't like men very much. This Horton fellow, then the Jackson fellow seem to be somewhat thick headed and obnoxious. No wonder the lady changed her mind. And then, to actually kidnap her!! Outrageous!! Great job as always!! Tallyhooo!!!!!
Thank you! We thunk this was all about the money. Isolated iwth her family, with no father to protect her - she would have been vulnerable. He hept selling it that it was her family keeping them apart. We think she had a lucky escape and that if she had gone to New Zealand she would have had an "unfortunate demise". Cad. 🤔
I think putting this story along side the advice columns from your vintage voices videos shows that much like today so many have no idea what marage is. But having said that I also think the husband was a cad and a rounder. As always thanks for the video.
Thank you - glad you liked! Yes, we think he was predatory and if she had gine to New Zelaland, she would have unfortunately died - a lucky escape for her. Her family really pulled her through. We found it so very bizarre that he really felt he was justified! Who is to say if this had happened 20 years before that Emily might have been stuck. Thank you! Really glad you liked!🙏
BLIMEY!! Jackson sounded like a HORRIBLE, controlling narcissist!! He didn't love Emily, but he wanted control of her and her money!! I'm glad she had such supportive relatives!! To be honest, Emily was better off a spinster rather than being saddled to Horrible Houghton Jackson!! Emily sounded like a VERY strong willed, determined, and resilient lady!! She sure needed that resilience during her terrible ordeal!! Thanks for sharing poor Emily's story, Robin!! 💞👍❤💕
We thnk so too! We think if she had ggone to New Zealand, she would have been dead! Yes, thank goodness for her family supporting her. We have seen this before on News of the Times - if the family or friends do not like the person, they are usually right!👍
@@ChronicleofTheTimes2024Oh DEFINITELY, Robin!! God knows what he would have done to her in New Zealand had she gone with him!! I also noticed how quickly he blamed her family and friends for her reluctance to marry him, and later to move in with him!! As if a woman couldn't think for herself!! Her family were justified to be wary about him!!
@@ChronicleofTheTimes2024 Also, I believe just after the wedding, he told her off in public for dropping her H's!! What the heck is that about?! She was a proper Lancashire lass, and entitled to speak how she wanted!!
@@nadiabrook7871 Quite right! We thought the same! There was no inkling of care anywhere in his relations iwth her - she would not have lasted a year fi she had lived with him. a predatory nasty man. His letter to her says it all really.🖊
Thank you, I very much enjoyed that. What a bounder he was. Poor Emily but good for her sticking to her guns. Was the marriage even consummated? All that walking about and visiting on the wedding day, when would they have time? Was that not grounds for annulment? I have subbed today.
Thank you! Much appreciated! It really helps our channel! 🙏 Noooo, it does not seem that the marraige was consummated - but those kind of details did not make the papers. Very interesting point! You are quite right - there was a time where the consummation of the marraige, or not, was absolutely grounds for divirce and indeed, "conjugal rights" was the basis for the giant scandal with Lord and lady Russell (ruclips.net/video/8yZh_NIqGBw/видео.html) but that did not come up! We really liked this case as it is one that falls between "old" england and rights of women and "new" england (although of course, England had a long long long way yet to go for rights of women - wow, were we slow in terms of right to vote). He did not want an annulment - he wanted his wife and her money. She, we think, did not really know what she wnated,. Possibly, she viewed her sisters marraige where both her sister and her husband were tightly woven into the family fabric - perhaps that is what she imagined when she said yes. But really, he just wanted her money we think, and she would probably have been dead within a year if she had married him. 🧐
WOWWW Nadia! Thank you! That is so very very kind of you!! Goodness! We will be feasting on posh coffees and bacon butties for a week!! Thank you so very vrey much! So very much appreciated be all of us here! We tast to your your very goo health iwth her coffee mugs in the air!☕☕☕ Thank you!🙏🙌🪄
Oh my! I actually thought they'd rule in his favor, with wives being considered property back then. So, I take it the whole thing just sort of fizzled out, without a divorce or anything? I guess a downside of being wealthy must be that they never really know if the other person is in it for love, or money.
Great point! And if it had been a few years before, it very well may have ended as you expected. There had been some long long needed changes in the law whereas a woman now did not sign over all of her assets to her husband (as chattel) as required a few years before. It sounds from his letter, that mr jackson was running on information from a few years before. The new law was put into place precisely to protect women from being targeted and used as we believe Jackson intended. She had strong family support. We think without that she would have been very vulnerable. We do not think she would have survived New Zealand. That little inner voice that we often ignore to our detriment - that is what saved her.🙌
