I learned guitar when I was a kid in the 80s. I can't imagine what it would have been like to have quality, detailed tutorials like this at my fingertips.
Great Lesson Steve. Good to see quality instruction of Kiss songs. Despite critics who knocked their musicianship, they created many influential metal riffs that are such a great primer for younger guitarists. Thanks for posting
Finally! Someone who knows how to play the intro riff correctly! No one else, including Bruce Kulick, plays that hammer-on which is so essential to the riff. Anything else is just lazy playing / lazy ear. GOOD JOB!
I turned into this channel to learn how to play watching you. But oh my God! The guitar and amp set up in this video are absolutely extraordinary! I don’t think I’ve ever heard a sound like this and believe you me, I have listen to a lot of music in my day. What a bad ass guitar!
I remember Bruce saying Gene was VERY specific about not squawking, pinching or doing "different" things to the riff.Even songs like War Machine,Strutter, etc where riffs were being played along with notes.Makes it sound MUCH heavier live. This is one of my faves from the vintage catalog.
Yes, lyrically, 90% of their songs are basically about sex. Which is all well and good as they were all about that part of Rock lol. But it also sucks as when it came down to it, they wrote some really beautiful and creative songs that get over looked. Coming home, going blind, under the rose, childhoods end and many, many others get passed over bc of the sex songs and in favor of the more well known songs. But I will say that no matter what they were doing lyrically, they ALWAYS delivered on guitars. Ace was an absolute riff genius. When Vinnie joined they lost that, but gained great lyric writing. When Bruce joined, they became more melodic. No matter the Era that you favor, kiss has something to offer everyone. And that's something you can't say about any other band out there.
Absolutely correct! I agree with you completely! Decade after decade they put out stuff that was easily at par, and often above average with whatever was out at the time. 70s heavy rock to 80s power pop, then hair metal. 90s they got tougher and grungier. I accepted ALL of IT, cuz they became like family after so many years. People let the circus distract them from the songs, but hey, we know! 😉
shinnox I agree with you 100% and I could not have said it better myself. I still argue with people to this day to forget about rock ‘n’ roll all night and Detroit rock city and dig a little deeper into songs like 100,000 years, watching you, and probably a dozen other songs that I can’t think of right now. LOL!
“ Kiss has something to offer everyone “...amazing mf point, If you like pop rock listen to (unmasked), if you like orchestrated type rock listen to (the elder), if you like classic rock listen to (dressed to kill) or (rock n roll over). And yes Ace was a fantastic riffs master, Mr speed is a genius riff, Parasite is a genius riff, Watching you is a genius riff, and so many others. But although Ace has never been the most technical guitar player, He is one of the most inspirational ones, was so good at gaining an emotional feel with the crowd, and his solos were musical not technical, and that’s why he is one of the masters of blending his solos into the theme of the song!
Back in the 80s I was in a band which played all the metal/rock song of the time. Two of the members were adamant NOT to play Kiss. sadly, even with this one (WY), I couldnt get them to see the merits of Kiss old stuff. Great tutorial, of a great tune. If I may, you are talented.... Dont "dumb down" aspects of playing. Make students understand the theory, and learn the propper terminology
Great lessons. I always play these riffs up or down a fret so I can use open strings- way easier. This riff would be so much easier played on the 2nd fret for example.

To note during chordal phrasing: as on most Kiss songs, Paul and Ace played either different versions of the same chord or Ace would play the same version of the chord an octave higher. How dare you say KISS has silly lyrics . . This song alone has one of the most poignant opening lines of all time . . “ Limpin’ as you do , I’m watchin’ you . . o o o “ 😂
You got it! Yeah, that is crazy .,..a predator watching his prey! Incredible lyrics that fit Genes' vibe perfectly as he was the one who sang it. Come on and love me, and Firehouse had great lyrics too!
Yes but you can play the song in standard tuning but 1 fret down on every note you seen here. From what I can tell, if the song doesn't have an open E chord in it, just play it 1 fret down on everything. I always thought guitars sound better a half step down and are easier to play because the strings aren't as tight.
Wrong. Paul Stanley only wrote guitar riffs for the songs he never co-wrote. Not a shock that Gene Simmons, for instance, wrote the classic guitar riff for "Black Diamond", a song mostly attributed to Paul. Most of the musical ideas came from Paul's co-writers, and he added his name to the song. Pretty standard knowledge, and it was often Gene Simmons, Vinnie Vincent or Bruce Kulick playing rhythm guitar on the majority of those albums. Paul is one of the worst players in rock and roll and a lazy song-writer. He only wrote 2 KISS songs himself between the years 1979 and 2008. There are hardly any demos of unreleased songs by Paul because he just didn't write much. His only songs ended up on KISS albums which is why so many of them were terrible, especially after Vinnie Vincent left the band.

Even if they weren’t, there just fun!
They need to play this song on radio! Forget Rock n Roll All Night
too heavy for radio, which is why I love it
Radio is WAY too redundant, and satellite radio is pretty much the same sadly.
Great tune 🤙

Names?
I know, right!?! I can't think of ANY Ibanez cooler than this hot rod! I'm Jelly!
How dare you say KISS has silly lyrics . . This song alone has one of the most poignant opening lines of all time . . “ Limpin’ as you do , I’m watchin’ you . . o o o “ 😂
Hey thanks for commenting and sharing your thoughts. Hope you enjoyed the lesson. 🙂
You got it! Yeah, that is crazy .,..a predator watching his prey! Incredible lyrics that fit Genes' vibe perfectly as he was the one who sang it. Come on and love me, and Firehouse had great lyrics too!
Tuned down a half step?
Yes but you can play the song in standard tuning but 1 fret down on every note you seen here. From what I can tell, if the song doesn't have an open E chord in it, just play it 1 fret down on everything. I always thought guitars sound better a half step down and are easier to play because the strings aren't as tight.
Awesome guitar, but hard for beginners to learn without regular markers.
remember, paul wrote the rhythm guitar riffs on 80-90% of kiss songs. gene came up with some too
@@scjklp6971 I'm sorry but you desperately miss informed.
@@mikeday6908He said Pauls one of the worst players.Coming from the guy with 0 platinum albums.🤭
No...no scratching.
Why would you use a fretboard with a such a intricate inlay It’s difficult to follow For lessons I would use a dot inlay
Thanks for watching, Frank! :-)
