- Trying a new type of video out! I’m LOVING X-Men ‘97 and since many / most folks won’t know who Bastion is I thought this would be a fun format to try out.
Who the F#%£ is Bastion?
As a huge 90s X-Men fan I loved the Operation Zero Tolerance run which affected SO many X comics of the time (with ramifications still felt today) so I was SO happy to see Bastion show up! But I’m also aware that his origins and backstory are, like many X-Men character pretty complicated. So I break those down and dive into how I think the X-Men Animated Series might modify them.
And as one of the biggest threats to Xavier’s dream I thought it would be fun to give some key Comic Recommendations as well!
Join me for some Mutant Madness! And lemme know what you think of the video!

I love how X-Men 97 is getting more fans involved with X-Men comic stories! It's my favorite part about shows like these being incredible and successful!
It’s the BEST! Love it!
It's not often a reboot of a show that has a great effect like the original did 30 yrs ago..
Yes! i love to watch it happen! Being into something for years and then seeing people talk about it now brings so much joy. And also cannot deny it gives me that “i’ve been knowing that” feeling 😊
I loved how dark the story went with Rogue. I didn’t expect her to follow the teachings of Darth Vader in the episode
This is great. Coy strikes me as one of those people who makes your life better simply by knowing him. Such good energy.
He does seem like an awesome guy.
He definitely has such an amazing energy
You should make a breakdown video and a history of Cassandra nova since she’s coming to Deadpool and Wolverine
Def a plan before the movie! Thanks! More to come!
This is your bread and butter imo. More videos like this sounds good to me.
Thanks! Cassandra Nova up next!
Comics detailed in the video!

Glad you're getting back to your YT channel.
You give me faith that it's still possible to find great things & people on the internet. 💜
After seeing the recent twitter exchange you had re: religion (which I completely agree with you on) I have to say I really admire how you approach the topic.
Thank you. Thank you: THANK YOU. Sincerely. It’s so delicate, but I think important to address. And fucking terrifying to.
Seriously. Appreciate you saying this
@@CoyJandreau Yeah, it really shouldn’t be delicate but unfortunately that’s our world for now and you’re making a living online so have to walk that tightrope. I don’t envy you but really admire how you walk it!
Rogue was fighting general Rosses hulkbusters in the beginning of the episode
Messiah Complex and XForce Angels and Demons is amazing. I refound my love for X-men with those comics. 🎉
So solid! Glad you loved em too
Love the title, and the use of McGregor to say it for you!
It’s what inspired the whole vid / perhaps series haha
This was an awesome rundown of Bastion and related storylines! Definitely interested in seeing more of these.
Excellent! Glad to hear it! Thanks!
Coy, the comic book version of the 'Siege Perilous' also has its roots in Arthurian legend. It was a talisman gifted to the X-Men to grant them a second chance at life by Roma, Merlin's daughter, and Goddess of Otherworld. It was a reward for them sacrificing their lives to defeat the Adversary during Fall of the Mutants.
Additionally, the remains of Master Mold co-opted and overrode the Nimrod unit in UCX 246. The reconstituted Mastermold was eventually defeated by Dazzler blasting him (and accidentally Rogue)through the Siege Perilous in UCX 247. Mastermold/Nimrod were reborn as Bastion on the other side of the trip through the same talisman that would change Psylocke Japanese, Havok into a Genoshan Magistrate, Colossus into humble artist, Dazzler into a failed musician and Rogue into a Savage land refugee.
My little bro was the Marvel kid, I was DC, and the Onslaught storyline was a big part of what scared me off - SO many titles involved to follow that story, he didn't get 'em all... Even the original X-men series was something my dad caught more episodes of than I did (long story). Best friend/house mate in my adult life has been my introduction/resource when it comes to all things Marvel (very handy!), and I've been surprised how much I actually seemed to have picked up over the years - somehow Bastion _wasn't_ a stranger to me. Really loving the show (it is a glorious time for animation right now), and appreciate your breakdowns, Coy, you're the perfect blend of thorough and enthusiastic 🙂
Excellent coverage of who Bastion is, the connections, and literal legacy he is still a part of.
97' is delivering so much within every episode. Absolutely love it. Even when it makes us cry. All of the feels
Plus great recommendations on the comics tied to everything
MvC: Onslaught was one of the toughest baddies in any universe
Wait.. just had a thought
This could be the Logan that lost everything in Deadpool & Wolverine
But there’s 2 more seasons coming… so I doubt it
Just subscribed. I heard of Bastian but didn't really read any comics after the Age of Apocalypse (can't help it, life happened). That said I'm glad Xmen 97 is getting me back to the comics and RUclipsrs like you help me find out who is who (whatever I missed the past 20+ years). Thanks Coy!
Coy, you are simply the best for this!!! I'm very glad that I started the Claremont series before the show. I just read Messiah Complex and Second Coming and love it. Thank you!
Perfect! On the exact right path! And so so glad to help! Thanks for watching and thanks for reading comics!
I love this Coy, it feels like I’m having a conversation with you alas. No panel, no mercs, just down to the nerdy business. 🙏 What a great time to be an X-men sweaty! You and the rejects are our daily joy. Thanks for all the hard work you guys put in.
hey thanks! The best of mutant times! appreciate it!
It made me smile seeing the Bendis/Maleev Daredevil artwork behind you. I think I need to get that.
Awesome content on Xmen. Xmen was all about showing of how much internal hate can and will destroy idealistic ways of life. To show destruction Genosha has so much real life connections!
Great recommendations coy! The Messiah trilogy is probably one of the best x-men storylines of all time.
Yesssss
Agreed
I’m reading all these comics
😅
Because even I at the end of episode was like….
Who the heck is Bastion???
I’m here for it
So many Easter eggs 🥚 this episode
Every time you went into concise detail on a point, I could imagine Greg sitting next to you with his eyes glazing over, then suddenly going: "Yeah, that was a great issue! I'll have to read it one day!"
Messiah complex, messiah war and second coming is one of the, if not THE best comic runs
Thank you Coy! 👏🏼 I had the same sound bite in my head, asking myself the same question 0:15 😂
As soon as I realized how niche (for non comic folk) he was the sound bite popped in my head and a whole show format was born!
A solid episode. Not the best, but not the worst. In fact I'd say it is pretty average for the show. I'd say each episode is ranked as follows:
E1: 4/5
E2: 4/5
E3: 3.5/5
E4: 1.5/5
E5: 4.5/5
E6: 3.5/5
E7: 3.5/5
Rogue was bad ass and loved that.
Cyclops being the first to rise after the team get blown up is an annoying thing they did in the original as well. Why was he up first? This show seems to be doing nothing with Wolverine... even letting him have a healing factor. :( Some are happy about that, I am not. In the 90's show he wasn't THE main character.. he was A main character though. Each member had plenty of their own episodes. I think after that what with Evolution and Wolverine & the X-Men.. not to mention the live action, people got tired of Wolverine be the focus.. and I'm not saying we should go that far. But this is weird. It's like they feel 2 wrongs make a right. In other shows Wolverine was too focused on so we won't do anything with him. Sad.
I'm really interested to see how the story with Bastion unfolds and how they adapt the stories for the show. I gotta say.. I never really imaged his voice being like the show.. Where Coy seems to like the voice for Bastion, I felt it just didn't fight. I'm not sure what would have worked for me, but this one just didn't. Maybe it'll grow on me over the rest of the season.
I look forward to the final three.
Because of X-Men '97, I got to explain the whole Storm/Forge/Adversary storyline at my company's morning meeting. I appreciate how the creator & writers actually read those old comics the same as I did
Yessss the best water cooler chats! And agreed!
0:12 ❤🎉😂
COY! Hope you’re feeling 100% again And right off the bat before we go too far into your video. Yes, yes more of this as well as your regular content. I love when a character is introduced for the first time that we haven’t seen and there’s more in the comic book that you can give us reference to. I always love that. Thanks again for all your hard workand healthy
THANKS for this, Coy!!! Yes, always tell us "Who the f$#k is that guy?" LOL!!!!
❤😂🎉 Coy. I kid you not when I heard it Theo James talking I could swear he sounded exactly like Nathan Fillion. Like I got so excited I said oh my God Fillion is on X-Men but then it was Theo James, which was very happy about as well.
Operation Zero Tolerance was the first X-Men comics arc I read 😍
Such a banger of a run!
Been loving this series so much never thinking it could possibly revival the original. Been reading X-men since the 1980s so definitely knew that was Bastion at first sight and them doing a version of Operation Zero Tolerance from the comics. Curious where they are going with this season end. Wouldn’t mind if they use him as a big bad down the line in live action. Love the Claremont first run and Lobdell run.
Love all your videos Coy! I'd like to see more videos like this. I appreciate how knowledgeable you are about X-Men 💙
Silvestri art was always so sic on X-Men.
There are so many masterpieces made by Silvestri
These are the videos I appreciate! True comic book fans, and fans of the series. This the first time where I know more than New Rockstars on content ... That's only because I watch the entire 90s X-Men series at least twice year. Lol. I'm glad 97 is putting more people on the X-Men property.
Fun feeling right? Thanks for checking this one out!
After those runs the Uncanny XForce Remender runs are some of the best XMen modern after 80’s 90’s comics I’ve ever read.
Remenders X-Force is an ALL TIME great run. Agreed
I'm currently catching up with the whole Krakoa run. I'm reading X-Men, X-Men Red and Immortal X-Men. 😊
I read XForce Angels and Demons and Messiah Complex in one go, LOVED it! I would love to see more of these videos. Hopefully you're feeling better again, Thanks! ❤💪
Thanks man! Glad you dug that run too!
More of this to come!
This is so dense and fun to explore! Really comics are like the most intricate , complex, deep and coolest form of storytelling and world building, character buliding, universe building. Tks coy for breaking it down 🔥
Right? The medium of comics is so vast and magical! Thanks for watching!
Yes for sure
I think I watched this for two reasons... love comics and your knowledge and thirst
Read everything you recommended in a day and it was glorious. Thank you so much, Coy.
THAT SOUNDS LIKE AN AMAZING DAY!
love these videos, coy! i finally started reading my uncanny x-men omnis after watching the first 2 episodes of x-men 97 and i’m sure others are getting into the comics from the show too. shows like this are awesome!
This video is amazing!!!
X-Men “97 is just so cool, iconic and nostalgic with a modern twist!!
I truly wouldn’t know who Bastion is, without watching this video. Bringing Bastion’s Comic history, and potential ways it would intertwine with X-Men “97 Series.
It is truly up to you, but this RUclips series is interesting. It brings a more in depth knowledge about information about not well known characters/teams in comic
A interesting video you should do is on MCU’s Thunderbolts, what are Thunderbolts, what makes them different than Dark Avengers, and which Thunderbolts Team will this mostly adapt. For me I feel like this would be covering more of Norman Osborn’s Dark Reign Thunderbolts but just take out Norman Osborn for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
What’s your thoughts on X-Men 97”? You should do a full season X-Men 97” Review!!
Love from Belgium 🇧🇪 ❤ I saw your react with Greg and was puzzled by the end of the episode. I was not familiar with Bastion (I knew only the name). Thank you for all the explanations ❤❤
Captain america showing up here is setting up Avengers vs X-Men in the future of this show
Could be!
Loving this show, having a fun time learning more and more about X-Men. I started my X-Men journey this year and watched all the Fox films. I really loved those films and think they are extremely underrated. But then I started X-Men 97 and absolutely fell in love with X-Men! I want to start reading comics but am not sure where to start. I also started watching bits of the OG 90s show and hope to finish it once 97 is done. Love your breakdown here and enjoy hearing you breakdown on Reel Rejects! I hope you post more here!
I hope we see other 90s marvel animated universe versions of Iron Man, Spider-Man, hulk and ghost rider in this show
Great break down Coy! I am so ready for Bastion to body the X-Men a lot of people say he is a week villian but they don't get how dangerous he really is. Nimrod and Mastermold is a deadly combination and nirod was a beast in the Krakoa era of the xmen comics
Agreed on all fronts! Cannot wait for eps 8-10!
i never read the Zero tolerance storyline but i did read mesiah complex and second coming and everything, great great great stuff.
Love to hear someone else reading runs I love! I’d def check out Zero tolerance if you get the chance too!
Just came over from Breakroom. Glad you’ve got your own channel, man!
Appreciate it man! Welcome!
Yes! I’d love more of this exact kind of video 🙏🏽
Hell yeah! You got it!
Love the video! Would love a list of the recommendations in the description or a pinned comment, great recs!
Thank you Coy!
I love Second Coming too, Nightcrawler death was brutal
VERY
More videos like this please!! And thank you for summarizing your recs at the end. I’ve read way more DC than Marvel, so I’m always looking for storylines to check out. I recently finished an X-Men movie rewatch and am now working through the Claremont Masterworks volumes (just finished Days of Future Past). So I will definitely be checking these out!
P.S. For anyone looking to read old comics, I recommend Hoopla (or Libby), which has a ton of digital comics. All you need is a library card.
LOVE hoopla and library access to comics for folks! And thanks for watching more to come like this! Will probably so Cassandra nova video after next pool trailer
Keep doing these vids. i was so much asking myself should i know who this guy is. ur explanations is so good.
Already knew who he was, but was mad hyped to see you in the recommendation! Just liked and subscribed!!
Coy, my friend. I always love when you deep dive into stuff like this. Great work as always.
I love this story line in the comics. It has some of the most amazing art from Carlos Pacheco and some really amazing stand out moments for Iceman too. Do you think he will be introduced at some point in this season of 97? Or who do you think will play out his role for the show?
Keep up the great work my friend.
The 198. pb is Awesome but that is only the mutants that can be detected are described in the end...Mutants like Cipher can't be detected but in another story Jean found her in the ashes of the island.
Don't forget about Fatal Attractions to see how Charles Xavier shut down Magneto's mind that eventually leads to Onslaught. I personally think that the producers are having everything lead to Onslaught because of what Bastion has done as well as Magneto's response once he is freed from Bastion. And all of this was planned by none other than Apocalypse himself. Bastion might be the big bad for this season of X-Men '97. However, the overall big bad will always be Apocalypse with Mr. Sinister doing his bidding.
I was glad to see this video because I wasn't that familiar with Bastion. The way they introduced him in the show, it's clear he's a big deal and very bad news, but I had to look up who he was afterwards. I have read Second Coming, which is great, but that was a long time ago, and I didn't make the connection right away.
Yes, I’ve been waiting on you to do one of these videos because I can’t read the comics because I’m visually impaired speaking of that. Do you know any good way for me to get a hold of comics Koy?
This is a great idea, Coy. Especially when characters like Cassandra Nova or Bastion show up.
Great breakdown Coy! I'm so happy you are doing more on your channel as I love seeing you on Reel Rejects, Capes & Cowels, and New Rockstars. It's really nice seeing you able to talk about the comics you love and the neverending knowledge you have about storylines from comic books (even though i feel like i know a bit more about DC than you 😅 😂 throw back to CoyCast spotify comment 😊)
So keep it up! And I'll keep sharing 😊
Hahahaha I respect a solid throwback. (And yes that may have proved it!)
Thanks for watching and tuning into all of the above, but especially for supporting here!
Yep, just added all those to my B&N wish list.
Cheaaa precisely the goal! Lemme know how ya dig em!
Coy, 198 mutants retain their powers after "No more mutants."
Thank you!! Knew it was over 100 and under 2, been a decade+ since that arc
Coy! One thing id LOVE to see from you is a major list of comic recommendations after the end of the season. Having it be about stuff the show has adapted/was inspired by and also storylines you think they'll adapt next!
Definitely read the entirety of Morrison's New X-Men. A lot of this show is inspired by late 90's X-Men, but thats also one of the worst era's so I wouldnt really recommend stuff like Operation: Zero Tolerance
I like this idea! Maybe I’ll do a top 5 graphic novels or even top 10 to read after x-Men 97!
Thank you for the video! I thought I was a big X-Men fan but I didn't know who Bastion was!
Perfect! Glad I could be of help!
love the video! do you think we will see the Bendis' "Villain" Cyclops by the end of this season or next season?
Loved this Coy. Would be nice if you did 1 on MR. SINISTER and the evil Owl
Great idea! Mr Sinister is likely up after Cassandra Nova! More to come!
No love for "Messiah War"?!?!? Lol. Jkjk
Another great episode I got to say. I knew we were gonna get an angrier Rogue but dear god I was not expecting her to murder Trask. I actually had a like pure jaw drop watching it. I was with Morph when he asked “Is this who we are now?” Also I guess Jean must have fainted secretly during Trask’s death cause like she could have saved him. (This is intended as a joke.) 😂
Jean be faintin. This is the way!
Loving the series, loving the new videos. Keep ‘em coming. ❤
Thanks so much!! Much more to come
Love seeing you geek out about comics and help fill us in on what's going on and where they're pulling inspiration for the story from! You and Rob at Comics Explained are my favorite comic book nerds on YT!! He called Bastion being the "main" baddy last week, or the week before that, I believe. 🤔
I really love the fact they are following the comics so much in this show you don't see that a lot these days.
The problem is I have never read the X Men comics and don't really know much about the X Men either I never watched the movies or the animated series.
I only know about a few characters there's a lot I do not know so thank you for doing this. I really learned a lot from this video.
So glad to hear that! Thank you!
definitely going to check out the comics you recommended
Hell yeah! Lemme know how you dig em!
This was a great ep. Thanks for doing these reaction with Greg even when imperson doesn't work. Keep bring the fun of comics to life in your explanations and reactions
Thanks!
Videos like this are VERY helpful. More please!
Will do! Thanks for watching!
Totally thought it was Purple Man. The record he put on had "purple" in the title, he was going on about control, and his skin is really pink. Only cartoonishly pink though, not purple :(
Yes Coy, we want more videos like this
So it shall be!
Do you have a video of where to start reading X-Men comics from as early as possible and reading as many runs as possible? Rather than just jumping around story arcs and stuff. It's very overwhelming
This show is making me want to read comics.😊 This is a very exciting time in marvel
HUZZAH IV DONE IT!
Such a great video Coy! Feel better!
Thanks so much!
great explanation coy! i've also started collecting comics so thanks for the recs as always brotha!
Love to hear it! Thanks for watching!
all my knowledge of bastion comes from _x-men: next dimension._
Keep it up, love the videos! Any chance of comic shopping coming back?
Iv been trying for YEARS. Not easy without a decent sized crew and studios backing me independently for talent booking. But Iv been scheming doing it with friends and grass roots returning it
Thanks Coy! more of these please. P.s. you're my fav youtuber, keep up the good work bud!
Thanks Coy. It explained a few things for me in a concise way. 👍✌️
Glad to help! His story is DENSE and convoluted! Glad I was able to!
Great video Coy. One request: when you are recommending these runs, can you share if they are available as one collected book or if we need to hunt for individual issues to read them?
Hey man! Totally logical ask! These here are all trades (collected runs)
In the weekly video (THIS WEEK IN COMICS) it’ll generally be individual issues.
In catch up vids like this for characters or arcs it’ll generally be trade paperbacks!
I so appreciate these videos! I have lots to read :)
Love to hear! So appreciate you checkin em out!
Awesome - nice work!!
Thanks for clarifying who's this Bastion is to non-comic readers man, helped a lot on what to expect for the upcoming additions to MCU's X-Men.
I only have 1 question and maybe you can discuss this on your upcoming live on RR or here on your channel. Uhm, why does X-Men gets a discrimination but Avengers doesn't if they too also possess powers and is living in the same time or am I missing something important? These bugs me off because I really wanna get my thoughts right whenever a new production is added to MCU esp X-Men related
Also, I'm doing a comic version of you and I'm naming it D'Coy (decoy / The Coy) lol 😂
These videos are great, I like Greg thought it was jimmi Simpson from bad batch and westworld. I have heard nothing of bastion, so this is a great way to learn.
Haha I love Jimmi Simpson and can totally hear that now
@@CoyJandreau his first role I ever saw him in, was Psych, been a fan ever since
Really enjoy these type of videos
Thanks so much for watching! More to come!
I was expecting a voice like McBeth in Gargoyles
That show was magnificent
Love the video and recommendations. Great breakdown of a character i didn't know about.
Perfect! Exact goal! Thanks!
Idk if this is a good series idea or something you have time for but if you made a series about the comics you picked up for the week and what you like and didn’t like about them etc and could probably get more people into comics that aren’t just DC and marvel since Ik you read a lot. Just a thought tho keep up the great work ! 💪🏽
That’s the prior video to this one!
This week in comics!
Only 3 eps in but I’m doing that very thing!
I was absolutely one of those “who the F is that” viewers as I was not familiar with Bastion at all. I thought Theo James sounded outstanding though and gave an amazing and perfect performance.
Haha happy to help fill in the gaps! And yeahhhh He CRUSHED i
Nicely done Coy. Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much!
loved this very helpful plz do more
Yesss love to hear it!
great review!!
