Luckily he didn't bleed out. The parents who don't survive their attacks aren't bad because they couldn't protect their kids, but I'm glad there was a survivor from these attacks to see some justice for the other murders. A 12 year old kid wtf is wrong with people
"He refused to leave until they found his son" has to be the most heartbreaking words I've ever heard. With his throat cut he only worried about his son. The perfect definition of what a parent should be. So heartbreaking
Not only did he dig himself out with his slit throat, but he didn't even leave for help until after he had also somehow dug up his son as well. That is true love. Sound like his son was amazing as well. In his last moments, he was pleading for them to spare his dad's life... his 1st instinct was to cry out for his dad's safety instead of his own! Sounds like a really good man who was also a great dad & raising a great young man!!!
The boy was like his father. In his final moments, he pled for his _father's_ life, not his own. They are both courageous, honorable, and righteous souls!!!

With which of my statements do you take issue (of course disagreeing with me is no bad thing, as lively debate is one of the best means of ferreting out the truth)? I really only make two assertions. Hence, do you disagree with assertion a) that "The boy is like his father - a courageous, honorable and righteous soul", or b) that "in his final moments, he pled for his father's life, not his own", which in my view, is the most compelling, amongst a host of reasons I perceive him _to be_ "a courageous, honorable, and righteous soul"? Or, is it something I've not divined? With which of my statements do you find fault, and why? If you kindly explain, I'll happily reply/support my side of the debate. Cheers!
Just horrible. While watching this my little boy also called Alex came into the room to show me a video game he's playing. I gave him an extra strong hug just thinking about this. God Bless that poor little lad and what a great Dad.
As a Momma I just cannot freaking imagine this nightmare! Watching your baby be murdered for 40k that you already handed over. He just wanted his baby to be found and buried properly, then he wanted to die by refusing treatment. Whatever police officer that told him to allow treatment for himself or his baby’s murderer would go free is a damn hero! That officer was able to break through the father’s shock and horror at exactly the right moment. My heart aches for him 💔😢
I've never heard of anyone, and I mean ANYONE harder than my boy Butch. "... ear to ear... climbed out of the grave..." DAMN Butch is an example of human determination at its finest.
When Jimmy Brooks turned himself in, it was because he was scarred of what Butch might end up doing to him. Jimmy’s words were, “I’m a dead man either way”. I can’t blame him for feeling that way. If you cut a man’s throat, shoot his son in front of him, bury him alive, and he’s determined enough to live through it, then you’d better be scared of what he might do to you.
Can't imagine being the father..going through all that..seeing your kid murdered..digging yourself out..and then trying to explain to the cops while you're bleeding out. That was freakin' intense.
@@tommyegirl Twisted my stomach to see/hear the footage. Especially when the cop is talking with dispatch..when a cop says "it's bad" over the radio, you know it's some serious business.
This particular story is really getting to me. Obv all of them are horrible but something abt this one is especially savage. IDK why it's so much more upsetting?
I can't even imagine not only having your child murdered in front of you, but then being buried alive on top of his dead body. that man must've survived from pure adrenaline.
imagine being able to give that man a lot of power in that moment, we would have try to save is son first and them spent his entire life butchering those objects ..i can;t call them people.
The quaking in that officers voice! I can’t imagine how horrific that must’ve been like to see in person. And to actually defy such a fatal cut for the sake of his boy’s justice! A true father.
Well it clearly wasn't a fatal cut. Presumably the guys windpipe wasn't severed, because he could talk still. He didn't survive because of some amazing character trait, it was just not a deep enough cut.
@@unitedfools3493 no need to be a snob about it, I’m not clueless enough to think that his windpipe was sliced. But there is enough bleeding visible to see that if he hadn’t tried his damnest to dig himself out of that grave, he wouldn’t have been able to reach anyone in time to be found.
What an amazing father + son. Fighting for the other’s lives in potentially their last moments. They weren’t thinking of self survival, but of the one they loved. I’m actually crying. How could someone kill a 12 year old boy while he’s pleading for not his life, but his father’s. My heart is broken again from this one, Mike. I think this is the most scary + sad case of all.
The video of him pleading with the cops to find his son while bleeding out and the tone of the cops voices really got me. "This is a bad one." Understatement.
Imagine having to dig your way out, knowing you're laying on top of your dead child... I hope that warrior of a man is doing as well as possible now. I hope he's healed and is thriving in memory of his lost son.
This is so dad poor father was a good dad and lost his precious son in a sickening way not to mention the old people that also died I'm glad atleast the money in both cases was found and returned to the families
RIP Brett, your dad stopped not one, but three, monsters. Butch is a hero. I hope he finds peace with the knowledge that he was responsible for saving the lives of many.
I read comments before watching and was actually relieved to hear the son had been shot in the head. It’s terrible he had to watch what was done to his father but at least it would have been quick and he didn’t have to suffer. My heart bleeds for his family though, especially this poor man. I’ll never comprehend what some people are willing to do for money.
The footage is chilling and absolutely heart breaking. You can hear the shaking in the polices voice when they’re saying “it’s bad....” omg. The dad not wanting to leave his son even though his neck is sliced open is just wow I can’t even imagine
I have the feeling that this is the most gruesome story you ever covered. Imagine lying in a hole on the dead body of your child, your throat cut - twice - and being burried alive. I just can't.
I completely agree!! I've left multiple comments trying to process this story, it IS one of the worst I've ever heard. It is shattering. I thought it couldn't get worse that the sweet couple.. Then it got worse. Much worse. I'm flattened by the evil of these murderers.

Ditto. Chills coarsed through my body when I heard him saying to get his boys body😔. I actually replayed that part of that AMAZING FATHER when he's walked to the 🚑 & the EMT is trying to "treat" him=SAVE HIS LIFE...Yet he's refusing, saying he wants his son body before he receives treatment...& you can literally hear the EMT trying to work out where his son is(because the fact that he literally JUST AT THAT VERY MOMENT was just relayed the info that he's got a son out there ~due to the father saying that. So I could just imagine the confusion that he's going through as a first responder, because immediately after hearing the father say that, he responds with something like "yes/of course"...realizing/or believing that there's a second victim now, whose been shot & the fact that he's just now hearing about the 2nd victim~ & hearing words like "my son was shot" & "his body"...so in the EMT's head, he's automatically in triage-mode, thinking about getting the backboard in order to get to the patients son and get him back to the 🚑 to Immediately start treatment on him/etc)....however once he heard the father explain that he's burried in a grave/whilst simultaneously hearing the officer who had called his chief, in order to explain the dire situation & the dilemma they're in...with regards to the father refusing treatment until they FULLY "dig up" his son's body(because as far as law enforcements side...that's a whole new can of worms...as far as having the foresight of preserving the scene & not wanting to compromise the integrity of the crime scene by trudging thru the crime scene, without CSI there to wear the proper gear & equipment: booties/gloves/etc so that they don't destroy evidence and contaminate the scene with THEIR OWN shoes/hair/prints/etc, because at that moment, the Officer didn't know that the father Actually KNEW the garbage🗑-suspects identity.) -But anyway, so yeah it's quite hair-raising because you can actually HEAR the EMT saying, "GRAVE⁉️" in response to the father when he's trying to find out where to get the 2nd victim...and then the father repeats "yes grave"...& again ~whilst he hears the the father saying that...he's simultaneously hearing the officers verify that fact, when he's telling his Cheif and describing the awful situation that occurred and explaining how the father LEGIT JUST DUG HIMSELF AND HIS SON PARTIALLY OUT OF THEIR OWN FREAKIN' GRAVE‼️ SMH...Just the thought of this HERO(the father)and how he was LITERALLY BURRIED ALIVE❗And as gruesome as it it sounds...unfortunately for the son, he WAS NOT buried alive; he was passed-on already after being shot. But I'm just taking solice in the fact that his son didn't have to suffer...his death came quick & immediate after being fatally shot...after all of the suffering and terror that his poor father and he had suffered through just prior to his death😔it's Absolutely Heartbreaking. All for some stupid marijuana growing scheme...GREEDY EVIL BEASTS. -Anyway...sorry for rambling on-&-on for so long...I should have just kept my comment short and sweet, with a simple "I agree!" response...but anyway I'm just gonna stfu now because I'm literally STILL rambling🤦🏻♀️

Maybe he couldn't save his son's life but he definitely made sure that the monsters who took his son's life, and the lives of the other couple, paid for their crimes.
That father... I'm a father myself with a kid around that age and this really hit close to home. Can't even begin to imagine the pain. All the best for him.

And the most sickening part when one reads the Court documents is discovering that when Brooks shot Brett the first time, Brett was making gurgling sounds. Alex. Yes it is so sad. No amount of karma could ever do justice to that poor dad. What a world we live in.
Just horrible. While watching this my little boy also called Alex came into the room to show me a video game he's playing. I gave him an extra strong hug just thinking about this. God Bless that poor little lad and what a great Dad.
I can’t imagine trying to go on after surviving something like that. That poor man.
And if I heard correctly, Mike said slit TWICE ear-to-ear
Definitely badder than Leroy Brown..
I think we were all gobsmacked to learn he survived. My jaw dropped that's for sure.

Can't imagine being the father..going through all that..seeing your kid murdered..digging yourself out..and then trying to explain to the cops while you're bleeding out. That was freakin' intense.

"Guy tells his name."
Officer-"Okay whats you name"
He was excited shitless.

“Wouldn’t leave his son” gave me goosebumps. Tragic
@@simonam8030 and we are the ones who just sat and watched ahaha
@@ellamortimer7401 Yup :)
Maybe he should create a channel to read brothers Grimm tales and call it Lil' Chapter,
I'd prolly watch it.
@Jeffrey Dohnger about every other episode
When Mike takes his glasses off, he ain't messin' around.
How can someone kill a 12 year boy, in front of his father and then go to sleep at night
They're psychopaths and sociopaths. They don't feel remorse for what they do.
They don’t think about it.
Weed is enough, apparently. People will still make every excuse for that childish drug.
By putting their head on the pillow and fall asleep.
Great question. It makes me sick.
After binge watching a few dozen of these over the past few days, this one really got to me. I’m a single dad with a 6 yo son. Some cold blooded scumbaggery right there. That father gets endless respect.
Imagine how much longer it would've taken for those monsters to get caught, had Butch not survived. What a blessed individual, though I weep for his loss. :(
Probably would of got away with it
Imagine how many people are buried in the woods that haven’t been found
Video starts at 1:50 :)

At least twenty five
Ever since I became a parent, child murders just hit different. I can’t even hardly listen when it’s a child that’s been murdered.
Exactly. This murder is beyond description. I'm 100% certain that part of Butch died that night & I'm having an especially difficult time with this story. My whole heart goes out to Butch.
Same there's alot I can't sit through
Same here. It’s so hard to listen
The hard part for me (being a mom also) is hearing that a parent had to witness their child be murdered, and then survive only to live with the horrendous vision. How do you ever live life happy again? Heartbreaking. 😔
Unfortunately our family recently experienced a murder. On October 4th my niece's 22 year old daughter was found dead in her apartment. My niece and her son found her. She had been dead a couple of days by then.
I can't wrap my mind around why someone would deliberately take her life. So senseless.
I just can't get over how much of a badass that dude is. He didn't just cheat death, he bent death over the toilet and gave it a swirly.
I've literally stopped watching every single other true crime RUclips channel since finding That Chapter. I may also have a slight crush on your sense of humour. God help me.
Def not alone in that.... Cute awkwardness is SO attractive!!
I’m joining in the club guys, such a great channel.
TC and one other - They Got Away With Murder. TGAWM covers very old cases in a very articulate British accent, very different from TC but with its own brand of charm.
Same here!
@@gtw4546 I'll have to check it out thanks! 😊
Poor poor little lad. Absolutely heartbreaking for the farther 😭 how do you ever come Back from that...
Literally the only way would be letting the guy have his way with the killer

So much to unpack in this one...that poor Father deserves a medal for having balls of absolute solid steel...what a horrible way to lose his son.
P.S the shirt continuity in your videos is 100% appreciated, my partner and I always go "whoa" when we see a rarely featured shirt or ensemble
Killing someone’s 12 year old child is the lowest thing you can do. I’m glad at least the father lived to carry on the sons amazing memories. I hope he was able to find some peace.
BUTCH WASN’T DEAD. Wtf amazing man, I can’t believe someone could live through that.
Every once in a while i stumble across a case that’s so heinous it physically turns my stomach & makes my toes curl. Such unspeakable horror i can’t fathom, this is one of those cases. Rip 🙏🏼
I love how the comments section on each and every video is incredibly positive. What a lovely community.
Same. My fav here in you tube.
As someone who lives in Phenix City, AL, this story is very familiar to me. Hearing you recount it gave me chills. Thank you for covering it so well!
I live in Montgomery 🙂
Oh shit another local, and yeah scary AF being so close to this
Omg, this made me cry for Butch and his son. I haven't cried over a case in a long time. This is the stuff of nightmares. 💔😭
I cried😢
@@jancyvidya8243 ❤️❤️❤️ I understand.
I hear you Elizabeth. I have a little boy as well. I'm keeping him close having seen this.
@@eoindee7007 my son is 28 now, but still...I would have done the same for. We always fight for our children. Butch is a hero. I only wish Brett could have been saved.
@@elizabethfizer3562 absolutely Elizabeth. My little boy has a big sister and it doesn't matter what age they are they will always be our little babies. How anyone could harm a child simply escapes me. It's no exaggeration to say that I'd die with a smile if I felt that I was saving my two little ones. Every good wish to you and your son from Ireland 🇮🇪 ❤.
Easily one of the most compelling stories you have covered, The strength that father found in himself just leaves me speechless, this would make for an amazing film.
This story shook me badly, even b4 the 2nd murders. IDK why but this story is especially horrific.
@@daniellebyers352 it seems to have affected us all more than usual.
I've been into true crime for a LONG long time. But this... this is easily one of the worst. This is up there for sure. How awful for that father and son.
I've never seen this one before, either.
This reminds me of the Tiffany Cole case.....💔 evil, evil monster
Me too...absolutely horrific! So sad 😢
@@heatherdoty66 I've never heard that one!! The one I actually think about daily (I just can't get over how they felt when they realized what was going to happen to them) is the Skylar Deleon and Jackie & Tom Hawks...... and his reasoning for it, it will stay with you! 💔
Wow. I can't imagine being buried alive, with a slit throat, with murdered son by his side, and still manage to dig himself up and get help. I know so many people already said it, but that's courage and strength, I hope he's doing well now
I can't imagine the guilt that Dad probably feels. They were leaving with him and then he brought his son to their attention. If he hadn't done that, his son would have lived.
I thought that too but they went BACK for the money and surely the son would have run out to see his father. Horrific!
Wow! I hadn't even thought of that. Perhaps it was that guilt that imbibed him with the extra-ordinary strength he conjured up to survive and try and save his son. He wouldn't't leave the scene unless until the cops had found the son...and Jq baker brings up a good point too that they went BACK and prolly woulda got the son anyway
most likely they woulda went back to search the house and found the son, no matter what he had told them at that point.
@@jqbaker418 Unless his son realized during that time that he was missing and called the police.
@@godhedsmanden True. But that doesn’t mean he had thought to himself that he had betrayed the safety of his son...albeit illogical (because they woulda found the son anyway) as you point out. A lot musta been goin through his head...at some point there woulda been the realization of “ heeey...these ain’t the cops!...Doh!”
oh my god. the fact he wouldn’t leave until they got his son, even tho the ambulance was there & his throat was slit multiple times .. there are no words, what a truly amazing man. 🥺💙💚
me before this video: *doesn't believe in the death penalty*
me after this video: yeah, can I get two death penalties with fries, please
And a coke to wash it down
you know, when I was young I did not believe in the death penalty either... Plus living in Germany it is not a possible sentence....
Now, many years later, in cases like this one I wish it was.....
@@urmelausdemeis4743 It should be possible in cases where the perpetrator's guilt is totally indisputable.
@@bobshenix I agree
@@urmelausdemeis4743 Same here... When I was younger I was absolutely against the death penalty. I thought that this was murder, too, and it wouldn't bring back the victims. Also there frequently are cases of innocent people being convicted, or guilty perpetrators who really feel remorseful and turn their lives around in prison, helping other inmates or prison guards in dangerous situations, etc.
But then you also have those cases of serial killers abusing and killing dozens of women, being definitely guilty, feeling no remorse at all, smiling, mocking and cursing at the victims' families during the trials, feeling proud of their deeds, enjoying talking about them in great detail and enjoying their notoriety. After coming across quite a few of those cases on true crime documentaries I thought "OK... The death penalty might be justified in some cases", and back in the days I'd never have imagined saying that one day.
That poor father! To lose your son like that & to be faced with it every day must be pure hell, but to be faced with what happened, in detail when he looks in mirror & sees his scars...I have no words. 💔💔
“Only butch wasn’t dead “
I’m speechless.
He was dead wrong
I gasped so loud bro Butch sounds invincible, the man is incredible and I just hope can once again find peace of mind bc imagine going through that
I'd left my phone on my counter and went to the other side of the kitchen to put something back in the fridge... I damn near gave myself whiplash when I heard that! And a very audible gasp at 0130 😅🥴
My mouth fell open and I froze staring at the screen at that point
I wonder how it was "revealed" Butch was still alive---
Showing up in the interrogation room's doorway would have been priceless...
That poor father. I can't even imagine his pain. What a horrific crime.
I watch a lot of true crime. But this butch guy is literally incredible. When people get buried alive and dig themselves out I am always amazed. The will to live is insane.
I live near Opelika and I was amazed to hear someone pronounce the name properly. Especially with Mike's delightful lilt. I love this channel!
This case really got to me. That fathers strength is unimaginable. May his little boy rest in peace.❤
After binging about 20 something videos from that chapter, this is the first story that actually made me cry. I just couldnt hold it in. What a terrible experience for the father and everyone involved
I agree, this has been the most difficult one to listen too. The father & son bond.... what a terrible loss!
I cried through the whole thing! I have sons! My gosh, that poor man!
11:40 when the cop said : ''this is a bad one''' that part gave me the chills. i hope the father is doing ok. so sad
Absolutely right. My brother is a cop so I can tell you the "this one" that the cop is referring to is him speaking in comparison to all the other horrific things they have to see through their careers. It made me cringe when he said it as well
I think I've watched just about all of your videos, and this may have been the most difficult to finish. This is really hard to imagine going through.
