Currently in the process of buying a 09 n54 manual 65k miles. What struck my interest was how well it was taken care of such as, new gaskets, new belts, new turbos, fbo, custom tuned 450 whp, coilovers, whole timing system was recently done, new coils and plugs, plugged head ports, cam ledges, cam sprocket, crank hub and lock kit, and water pump were all recently done. everything has dates as well as receipts to prove what was done to the car.
@@akimbocs I think new turbos just meant new bigger upgraded turbos. Only assuming since the cars pushing 450whp but who knows. The n54 is just not worth it imo, LS the world
Great Video! - I laugh at people getting scared of the 335 N54. mine is a 2008 335xi 6MT with 194,000 miles. Stock turbos and NO power mods. It still pulls great and still gets 7psi of boost. I do ALL maintenance according to BMW and a little more just because I LOVE working on it. I still have Index 9 injectors and plastic pipe charge. have only added 19 inch wheels, OCC and Cone Air Intakes
N54 it can be reliable if the engine and the car has been looked after but its kinda rare to see an clean N54 with no issues. most N54 have major problems example the serpentine belt

ALL cars have their unexpected design or engineering issues. i.e Chevy Equinox has too small of a PCV system and the cars implode, PORSCHE have crammed engine bays that reduce the life of plastic peripherals and seals. in the N54, belt issue is not an issue with the belt itself, it craps out because of DELAYED replacement of Oil Housing Gasket / Valve Cover Gasket. SO, technically it's user error.
I was fortunate enough to get mine from a family friend, it has been well maintained and i got it very cheap. Only thing i have had to replace was the washer fluid pump. Now the biggest issue i have to deal with is foggy headlights, id call myself lucky for getting rhe one i got
Yes facts I have a 2011 bmw 328i e92 coupe sulev no hp I love it however it's only a stepping stone next is the 335 I n54 yes because first time owners usually don't have the tools for these like scan tools apps coding etc so your 100% correct and DIY mostly you can do your own work
I got a decent bmw e93 335i fully converted to an m3 (except engine ofc), fully specked out interior with a 60k mileage, however I had to replace my turbines, injectors, coilovers and now I need to replace an oxygen sensor, fix slight oil leakage and fix my damn breaks, because they squeak so bad :D Edit: Oh and also this is my first car lmao
Yup that's exactly it. I bought my second one for $1500 but it had the serpentine belt and pulleys done as well as the water pump thermostat and oil filter gaskets. However it also had 185000 miles on it. But the engine has been fine and is still perfect I put in everything else though

I got a 135 convertible. It was adult owned and they replaced to index 12 injectors. The Reason i prefer the n54 over the n55 is because the engine itself is much stronger. I can repair a leaky water pump or get new turbos. I cant replace the block or rod bearings like the n55. N54 gets a bad rep for people who buy it dirt cheap and cant maintain it.

i have a bmw 335i 07 and it's a beast i got index 10 for dirt cheap and pure turbos new water pump and thermostat and all gaskets... for 1200$ (without the turbos of course) and man it's f awesome after 1 years of torture it's working fine 😂
Like any car John you must do maintenance regularly to keep any car especially a BMW or Mercedes running ok can’t legislate for unexpected items going but maintenance first before performance 🇬🇧👍🇬🇧👍
Sadly I had an awful experience with my 2009 bmw 335i e93 convertible. Needed a replacement engine. Many guys in U.K. had bad experiences, vast expense with runflat tyres to, engine issues, engine components. Bmw do make better cars/engines. Personally I’d stay clear of a N54. Choose wisely. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

I get trying to defend an engine you like, but “things around the engine” is stuff like the battery, or the AC, or the power steering. Injectors go directly into the cylinder, and the water pump directly feeds coolant into the water jacket in the core of the engine block.
Got a 07 e92 n54 from a police auction with 107k miles for 4 grand, needs some work but turbos look new, I’m guessing someone took care of it before it was auctioned
i have a mazdaspeed 3 that i love its quick and real cheap on mods and maintenance but my friends 335i was on crack intake intercooler and downpipes was the things done to it and that thing would gap the f out of me so i got real intrigued in buying me one. the nightmare storys do scare me just a bit i can replace my speed 3 motor with just about 2-4k and already have done so twice 😭

Injectors are not cheap. New index 12 injectors are about $1200 for 6 of them (what I paid a couple years ago) so $3000 for the 335 is a good buy in my opinion.
I have an 0o 335i mt it's stage 2+ e40 blend I did get the maintenance done except index 12 Injectors. My car has had no issues for a while. I will get the 12'd if needed but truthfully it's been so dialed in im scared to mess with anything right now. Unless your handy and are prepared to do the maintenance yourself don't buy a beat up one. It will cost you more in the end
What about the 335 with the N55? Less power potential in some ways but still capable of 400hp-500hp pretty easily and a bit more reliable compared to the N54 if I'm not mistaken.
I just got one with 122k for 2500 bucks can’t lie maintenance is expensive for some of the stuff I don’t have time to fix due to my work schedule but it’s a fun car I’m coming from a slow f30 328i
Currently have an '09 e90 on hold with Carvana. It has 55k miles and they're selling it for $18k. Seems pretty low mileage, and that it'd still be in a position to have preventative care done. Looking through the carfax, they haven't done replacements on any parts yet, so I'm not sure if that's of concern. I'd anticipate needing to replace some parts by 100k miles? Anyone have any words of advice? I'm coming off of owning a 2010 Audi S4.

I think I'm going to sell mine . I've had it like 3 years almost 4. It's at 113k miles. 2008. Silver outside with gray inside. Only bad thing is the rattle. Everything else is good. What price should I put it at ?
I have one. Really fun car, not worth dumping money into it cause the power gains are so minimal. Just get a dinan piggyback tune and call it a day. I had to replace a bunch of coolant lines as in the b48 its a common issue. Other than cooling issues its a sturdy engine for a daily driver

Try and get a 335is it’s got a better transmission and has a nicer body package. Everything he mentioned goes out tho so try and find a well maintained one or just be ready for sum maintenance. We’ll worth tho definitely
If you plan on buying a N54 you better get it dirt cheap. You will need the money 💰🤑 for a boat load of cost and maintenance and if you depend on a shop for repairs you will need more money. These cars are a love hate relationship.

Look for oil sludge around the belt, dried coolant on the hoses, get under the car and look for obvious leaks

If you have m3 brakes your pads might be squeaking because you’re not running hot enough, if that doesn’t make sense google it idk how to explain it

My 2009 BMW Z4 35i has 143,000 fairly trouble free miles on it. New injectors a couple years ago and usual oil changes are about it. 😀

18k is kinda high but if it has 55k on it worth it because people are selling ones with 100-130k for like 15k in my area
