      Yes! There were a lot of dishes in Thailand that we were familiar with, or at least that we had heard of. Not so in Cambodia. Surprised dishes like loc lak and kuy teav are totally unknown where we're from.

      I’m Cambodian and unfortunately Thai cuisine has taken most of the lime light but our food is pretty much the same flavour wise and dishes wise. You just gotta know what to order.
      You were spot on about the fish. It’s meant to be like a jerky. It’s stinky, salty but delicious. It actually is meant to pair with congee.

    Cambodia has a very different vibe than Thailand, but in a way it is like Thailand 40-50 years ago. It is really starting to develop, but it is a poor country. Something you might come across is a woman with a baby, begging for you to buy milk formula. I almost fell for it but some more experienced folks filled me in. The woman will ask to go to a very specific store and grabs a large size and it is really really expensive. like $50 or so. The scam is once you leave she returns it and gets a share of the money. Sad it happens, but the best thing to do is find a local school or orphanage and donate directly. With that being said I found the Cambodian people to be extremely generous, honest and kind.

      Hey Dave. We are really, really late replying to this. But I just wanted to say that we did have a brush with that scam (very briefly). Thank you for alerting us to it, it is certainly the type of thing we would have fallen for otherwise.

      I can say the scam can happened to any country, and yes Cambodia is poor country. My heart dropped every time I was there. You have a way to help the real needed people. Only give when they’re alone and be quick about it. I always change into Khmer riel to give so you won’t go broke yourself. Good luck and enjoy.
      Be honest it’s a cheap country to visit over all, compared to Thailand.

    Love watching your videos! Kinda make me miss the good old days when I was a solo backpacker. My favourite Cambodian food was Nom banh chok ( curry noodles soup ). Full of flavour! Must try! The best one I had was literally by the street stand in Sihanoukville, sat on a stool with Cambodian kids and stuffed our faces with that dish and at the end I ended up paying for their meal. It was awesome! And took a picture with those kids at the end for great memories:) Happy Travel!

    Just a tip or two about Cambodian food. If you ever think your food is bland, check for condiments that may have come with the dish. Often you are expected to spice up your own dish yourself. If you get served a dish of pepper and a lime wedge or two, squeeze the lime into the pepper and then dip into that. You'll thank me for that. One of the signature dishes of Cambodia is Fish Amok - a coconut-based curry. You can also get it with chicken or vegetarian. It's flavorful, but if you find it not spicy, feel free to add chilis or chili sauce. Be careful with the tiny, red chilis. Like in Thailand, they're super spicy. Finally, Cambodian and/or Anchor beer is best drunk very cold. Don't let them warm up.

    Hey Tia & Cheveyo, you should definitely try Amok. We have that in Thailand too but the Cambodian version is really good and easy to eat. Beer is really CHEAP there. Cambodia has one of the most variety of river fishes in the world, but the way they prepare is not very appetizing - mostly it is dry fish then deep fry or grills it.
    Also, they are one of the biggest branded textile manufacturers, you can get a really good deal there. But you have to have a keen eye for it - 80% of it is like cheap quality counterfeit stuff. Fresh sugarcane juice almost put me into hospital for food poisoning, so beware.
    Oh and you should be more active on Instagram. I think people love to see still photograph too - of different places especially now that you are already there and most people still stuck with covid.

    • @OnePackWanderers
      @OnePackWanderers  2 года назад

      Thank you for the insight! We wondered about the quality of the clothing with it being so cheap! It doesn't seem possible to make a shirt for $1.
      Thanks for the warning about food poisoning. We are usually fairly adventurous with food, but we'll be careful here.
      We know we should be more active on Instagram 😅 We find it very difficult to get behind the stereotypical Instagram poses and stuff. But, you do make a good point.
      Cheers, and thanks for taking the time to write that out.

      @@OnePackWanderers Because I like spicy and Thai foods have many tastes and in Cambodia they have just a few to add like sugar and sauce but nothing spicy. However, I think their foods, westerner will love because not spicy and not strong taste. Have a wonderful time at Ankor Wat. I would love to go Ankor wat again as when I went was so crowded for now I think you can enjoy as less tourist. Beware of over price taxi and etc. Be safe!

    I'm really curious how hard it is to get around in Cambodia. I watch another RUclipsr that lives in Laos and their roads are practically all dirt outside of the cities. You NEED a truck to get around most parts of the country.

    • @caseykasem2003
      @caseykasem2003 2 года назад +1

      Hi Bryan. It is not difficult to get around in Cambodia. The highway from Siemreap to Phnom Penh allows for a comfortable and fairly relaxing 5-hour drive. You DEFINITELY do not need a truck or even a SUV to get around in Cambodia, unless you get off the beaten track, of course, in which case you do need a SUV.

      @@OnePackWanderers If only for 30 days. It is a tourist viza that cannot be extended. You may have to do a " viza run to Thailand, or other neighbouring countries. Cross the border, have a coffee, then come back with another 30 days. It seems that it is all bureaucratic madness, connected to ASEAN. I hope that will change in the future, if not. Very sad for Cambodia. I worked there for 8.5 yrs.
