This is a very very good instruction video for those learning to read charts. I love following charted patterns. I taught myself to read charts when I was a child, fifty years ago, using my mother’s Magic Crochet magazines. I made lots of beautiful doilies in cotton string this way. I’m a visual learner. Thank you!
Thank you SO much! A lightbulb just went off in my head! I have looked at charts before and just said no way! It's really easy and I like the visual. It's like a map. 💜
I LOVE this video! I've struggled with printed patterns even though I've been crocheting for years. I've relied heavily on RUclips videos (many of them from your channel) because I didn't have to frustrate myself by trying to understand a pattern. I get it now!! Thank you SO much & please keep those videos coming.
Excellent video! I tried to read a symbol pattern and couldn’t get it. I’m not sure if it had a legend or not. I’m just getting half way decent at reading a written pattern. It’s nice to have it to go along with a tutorial. You’ve done a wonderful job of teaching this. Thank-you!😀
I’ve never seen this before, but I only started teaching myself a year ago. I wonder why they do this...to me it’s easier just to read the letter format, but that’s all I’ve ever known about.
Charts help those who don't understand what the designer is saying in the written pattern. Also, when you find a pattern that you love, but it's written in a foreign language from your own, the charts then become very useful.
Thank you ever so much for this. I have been so so lazy and never bothered to decipher crochet charts! ha ha But hey Presto!!! here's what's needed. This has made light of those lines and squiggles ha ha Thank you Naztazia!! xx
I have mostly gone by written patterns inthe 60 yrs I've been crocheting. Looked at the diagrams but never could follow them. Thank you so much for this tutorial I think I might be able to try one now. I saved this to my chat so I could keep it. 🧶❤😘
I use Adobe Illustrator for my charts, which is a general line drawing program. Haven't tried any actual crochet chart makers, but I hear there are a lot of them out there.
@@naztazia Awesome!! Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate it!!💕 I have Photoshop and I'll look around for a program too.
Edit: I love this! This helps me understand it because I have ADHD and struggle with processing new information without audible things and examples. Reading doesn’t work, nor does just talking. But talking and examples like this help so much. So thank you because this is heaven. Why is crochet like mf biology! I hate it. But I wanna learn it. But it’s difficult because I have trouble reading this without actual real images! An no one else does it! But they need to. Why? To make it easier for me and others! I’ll start a riot with my frustration!
Thank you for this! I avoid anything with a chart.. I prefer written patterns. This shows small matching( swatch & chart right above the crocheting) examples… that makes it much more understandable! Wonderful how-to!
Great video, so many people out there assume everyone knows how to read their patterns and have skipped teaching this. Much appreciated and I'll probably have to rewatch before working from a pattern. 😊❤️
Thankyou for making this so easy to understand! I am 51, just diagnosed with adhd but I've been doing crochet since I was a kid. I never had the focus to learn how to read a chart.
Thank you so much Donna, ive only been crocheting for two years & I found this very interesting and very informative teaching me how to read the symbols, because i've only been crocheting through tutorials 🤗😍💜
Sometimes people know how to do things, but do not know how to teach. In your case your instructions are so easy to follow, so clear and detailed… thank you! That being said, could you please “teach us” how to SHIFT (stitch) when crocheting in the round, so that the fabric doesn’t slant to one side or the other? Please, please!?!?! 🙏
These symbols were well designed, first time I came across these charts and made an ''intermediate'' doily, I guessed what they all meant and only later thought to look up a legend
Thank you so verymuch for sharing video sharing the chart. You explain things so very well, that I can understand this!! You have such a knack for explaining things!! Thank you thank you thankyou!!
Donna you as always amaze me….I suffered a severe head injury….I used to make thread doilies using symbols and read patterns. Not now…. Everything I read or see confounds me. I have made almost everything you make bc you are an amazing teacher. I loved making those Christmas gnomes last year. I can read pattern a bit better….I was wondering if charts for a sweater will give chain count? Anyway thanks again for helping my rehab!
Sometimes charts for a sweater will show a chain count, but sometimes not. It mostly depends upon the designer and how detailed they are with their instructions.
Thank you so much! I’m a beginner so I’ve been teaching myself through videos but want to start reading patterns so I have something to fall back on, this was so helpful and I began to understand it by the second example ❤
Thank you ever so much for this video. I have hard time reading the symbols. I can read a pattern. I can follow crochet chart as do counted cross stitch. I needed this.
Liked! And subscribed! I’m a beginner and this was such an amazing video compared to others- This helped me grasp the concept by seeing the visual follow along💕
Thank you thank you thank you. Never knew HOW to read the charts so I just left them and usually followed tutorials where I could follow the lady actually working a crochet pattern.
I didn’t even know of charts until this video. Now that I do know, I think it is easier for me to read than written out instructions. It reminds me of putting legos based on the pictures in the book
Thank you. I would take one look at those symbols and would get frustrated had no clue. Me it makes sense thank you. Love watching and crocheting along with you.
Yes, I feel the same way. I find working in rounds, especially a vintage doily pattern, is so much easier when there is a chart available. With rows, I'm ok with words, but rounds definitely work better (for me) with charts.
If you look at the chart, you'll see the 3 circles along the side. Those represent the first 3 chain stitches. I then mention you'll be working in the fifth chain. So you'll count those 3 on the side, then 2 more and put your hook in that 5th one.
Normally if they want you to skip a stitch, they won't have any stitches showing above it. So what would show would be the top of the previous row's stitch, but with no stitch above it for the new row.
Thanks for this informative video! Am still a beginner but am trying to learn how to read patterns as well. Just wondering for the circle pattern, would it be possible to start with a magic circle 11 double crochet instead of a (chain 4, slip stitch and then start double crochet)?
You can do all sorts of substitutions for your own use. However, if designer wrote a pattern a certain way, there might be a reason for it. So whether or not you can do something like that depends upon the design and why the designer chose to do it another way.
@naztazia thanks! Just wasn't sure if the magic ring and chain 4, slip stitch are the same (just different methods of achieving the result) or is there any pros and cons between the 2

I love the Magic Crochet magazines! Their diagrams (and patterns) were fantastic!
My mother had some Magic Crochet books , but she passed in 2010 3 yes after my husband. Now they're mine. Beautiful patterns in them.
Super simple and to the point. Fab video. Thanks.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video . Much appreciate. Now i can read chart and start crochet again 💝

So true, I have also felt like charts were a pain. This is a perfect video to give me confidence.
Thank you, Donna. I am an older crocheter and could not read a chart. I think, I can do it with no problem with you explain.💕
Wonderful!

Thanks million. Even I can knit by following the video. I have no idea how to knit by seeing this pattern. You are so kind.🙏
The pattern for the rounds is easier this way for me than watching RUclips videos or reading written words.

Thanks a lot for your help plz can I get one of applications to draw these samples god bless you
I usually use Adobe Photoshop to draw my crochet symbols. There are also other programs out there that others use like Stitchworks Software.
This is so important!! Thanks for sharing the knowledge with us🙏🏻
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the tutorial! To this day I was only able to read written patterns but now nothing scares me anymore! 🥰
Excellent video on reading the charts! Thank you!
2:15 you saidskip the first chain base stich and start at the 6 th chain. I don't see that in the chart. confused me just a little bit
If you look at the chart, you'll see the 3 circles along the side. Those represent the first 3 chain stitches. I then mention you'll be working in the fifth chain. So you'll count those 3 on the side, then 2 more and put your hook in that 5th one.
Very useful, thanks ❤️
Thank you is very helpful
Please what is the symbol to skip the stitch in the previous row?
Normally if they want you to skip a stitch, they won't have any stitches showing above it. So what would show would be the top of the previous row's stitch, but with no stitch above it for the new row.
Thank you so very useful 🙏🏻
Thank you so much! This tutorial is really helpful
