I have been crocheting/knitting for 60 years, but I haven't the past 5 years. I got a crochet pattern book at the library and was shocked when I saw the new way of reading "diagramed" instructions.". I had no idea how to do that. Your video is EXCELLENT. Thank you, thank you. Now I can also teach my granddaughters how to read them.
During the Corona Virus quarantine, I promised myself to learn how to read crochet patterns with symbols. You made it so easy. By the time you finished, I didn't have one question. Now I'm going to look for an easy pattern and try it. Thank you for your time and effort and easy teaching style. May God keep you safe.
This video was so wonderful! I learned to crochet using crochet charts. I still have a few copies of Crochet Fantasy magazines from1985 and 1986. These magazines had both the written instructions, which I rarely used, and the charts for the patterns. When I started crocheting again I had difficulty reading patterns because, in many cases, charts were not included, only the written patterns. It was like decoding a secret message. I can now read and write patterns using this "code." I agree with you when you say that the chart makes following a pattern so much easier. I am a visual learner. Watching your video was such a great way to refresh my old chart reading skills. Your explanation of the symbols was so easy to follow I know It must have helped many to understand crochet charts much better. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into making this video.
Thank you so very much for this video. I am still trying not to quit crocheting after 6 months because even if I know the basic stitches, I get totally discombobulated trying to follow the written patterns, really totally lost. I am 73 and although my mother tried to teach me several times I just could not pay attention, get into it. I’m glad I recently found out that I’m autistic AND have ADHD which basically explained my life! My autistic “special thing” all my life has been researching and learning, even though I was probably never really going to use whatever that specific knowledge was. I really like crochet but I after I got the basics I tried to make things ,if I have a video tutorial and play it multiple times until I memorize it. So I think this will be my hobby for hopefully a long time after now “ getting” how to read the chart or diagram and forget reading the pattern. I felt so dumb and frustrated getting lost in the pattern. So thanks again and please forgive the long boring “rant”.
My biggest problem is where to start, and in some cases where to go next when following a mess of symbols. Your chart is nice and obvious as you say, but some I have seen are just a big mess with no starting point. I try to work them out in my head but end up baffled. How do you handle rows when they don't actually indicate where the row is going, it seems to have several paths it could follow. This post is as hard to understand as the patterns I try to read, hope you can grasp what I mean. Also would it be clearer if I actually crocheted instead of trying to understand it mentally. Thanks for a great tutorial, I have subscribed and liked.
I have been crocheting since 2011 and never tried to learn to read chats until just now (needed to know for a pattern). I wish I had tried to learn before because this seems to make it easier! Thank you for your detailed explanation.
Thank you for this tutorial. I may well be tempted to follow a chart as you seemed to explain it so clearly. Prior to this video I thought the charts were so confusing. I’ve watched other tutorials on charts and still couldn’t understand it but this looks ‘easy’.
Thank you this helps me a lot... Im crocheting since I was teenager trying to make a written pattern but it always end up failed now making video for my crocheting project so I can remember everything when I have to make it again...
This has really helped me understand the charts better than anyone else has explained it! I crochet doilies and I have always avoided oval doilies because I never understood the instructions, this is going to make this so much easier!
Ohh.. this is really help for beginners like me... My mom left handed & used to knitting.. I'm right handed & I'll keep it up doing my own crohet as nice as my mom's design...& also this tutoring so that we can easy crochet, happy crochet!!! Have a nice day!
You are A-M-A-Z-I-NG!!! I can NOT Thank You ENOUGH! I have been watching "how to read Crochet Charts" videos ALL DAY, and I swear, none of them made any sense until I watched yours!! It's like you are the ONLY person out in RUclips-Land who took the time to explain the charts at a beginner's level, whereas everyone else was trying to sound all hoity-toity, "I know more than you do", yadda, yadda, yadda... 🙄 I just found you, so I am going to see what tutorials you have to offer! I am praying that you are offering what I'm needing! Thank You again SO MUCH! Consider me a Subscriber-For-Life!!! 💕
Thanks for the tips! I never would have been able to figure out a complicated amigurumi parrot pattern without the chart. I love your suggestion to make my own chart for patterns.
Thank you for sharing, I'm a newby to crochet and just even contemplating reading a pattern is very daunting, you made it clearer for me, many thanks xx
I'm thrilled with this video! I am new to crocheting. Actually my Grannie was left-handed like me and taught me when I was about 12 yrs old. I'm now starting it again so this video was so helpful. Thanks!
This is very helpful! I was getting tired of watching video tutorials that make me pause play and rewind so many times so I looked for written patterns. Was about to give up crochet when I saw how complicated those were. Thanks for making it easier!
Never read charts before cause it looked so complicated and was confusing so I gave up until I ran across you and this video. Thanks for sharing this great information. I know now I can read charts!
Thank You Soooooo Much for breaking down the codes..... I am currently crochet your no stopping me now shawl and LOVE the chart....I think now I'd prefer the chart now and will look for pattern and stitch books that have good chart from here on out. Thank you again😊👍🏻
This was awesome and extremely helpful im starting to watch the basics of reading patterns and diagrams as im getting into making sweaters so im making sure i watch these awesome videos!
Oh thank you so much you made and explain it clearly. I am a total beginner and trying to understand on how to read crochet charts pattern as well as the symbols ❤️ you have gain a subscriber 👌🏼. Can you make a video on how to write a pattern?
Iryna Boehland Yes, but that is what is so wonderful. Without even knowing the name of the stitch you know what to do when you see the capital T with the slash on it. In the UK that would be a Treble but in US it is a Double crochet ;)
Great video!!! I was taught by watching and sometimes I use written patterns. never a chart. Thanks a million!!! I would like to know how to get the pattern for the white sweater on the ad page for this video.
Your video was awesome!! You really explained everything well, and I'm starting to understand Crochet Charts!! Continue to do what you love!! Thank you, ma'am
This is so helpful, and I just wonder if there is a similar video for making a chart from written directions. I'm a bit dyslexic when it comes to reading patterns and sometimes don't catch an error until I'm rows and rows into a project. I find that when I have both the chart and the pattern it is easier to double check my work. I'm really tired of making a project even after a swatch, that I still have to pull apart because I didn't 'see' it right. Right now I'm working on a dragonfly pattern and just want to transpose the written directions into a chart. Any suggestions?
Thank you for your quick response. No, not in the written pattern. The crochet graph you are teaching us shows the words. [_____Repeat ______] at the bottom of the graph. Thanks again. Much appreciated !
Thank you very much! I had a little difficulty to fully understand the charts, because no matter how I tried, it never worked out right ... again, thanks for the help.
Oh plz plz do a virus shawl. U r really great at explaining the charts & the steps & I just cnt get it frm anyone else yet. Hopefully u take requests lol
You mean if there are brackets in a row of written instruction? That usually means a repeat of some sort. Do you have a specific example I can help with?
Thank you for your clear and concise videos. They're the best! I am currently doing a basket-like project that I want start with a flat circle in the round, then transition to a tubular pattern (shells or arches.) Is there a way to read or convert a flat pattern so it can be crocheted in the round?
can you explain row 6 please? I can read the symbols but you skipped over that row to explain it stitch for stitch on how they work into row 5. Thank you, great video
I am left-handed! You might want to point out that lefties start from L to R for row 1 and do the reversals for all the other rows! (Confusing for you righties? Now you know how we lefties feel trying to follow directions/charts for right-handers!)

I wanted to say thank you, you made it possible for me to read a chart and have it make sense. I have struggled with it for a long time. Thanks again.
Thanks for the tips! I never would have been able to figure out a complicated amigurumi parrot pattern without the chart. I love your suggestion to make my own chart for patterns.

+Lesley Farris it's my pleasure
Thank you, Marly, very well done! American crocheters will learn this in no time!
UK though, has a slight difference in naming each crochet stitch.
Iryna Boehland Yes, but that is what is so wonderful. Without even knowing the name of the stitch you know what to do when you see the capital T with the slash on it. In the UK that would be a Treble but in US it is a Double crochet ;)
Marly Bird I know! I love to use Japanese charts for that reason too
Great video!!! I was taught by watching and sometimes I use written patterns. never a chart. Thanks a million!!! I would like to know how to get the pattern for the white sweater on the ad page for this video.
I have known this for ages , but I love your way of explanation.
Thanks! You explained it so well! Been a long time since I did a chart crochet!
Hi, good job. Just to confirm for you that the stitch where you YO 4 times is called a Triple Treble. 😊
Your video was awesome!! You really explained everything well, and I'm starting to understand Crochet Charts!! Continue to do what you love!! Thank you, ma'am

Please would you explain what the repeat in a bracket indicates. Thank you so much for a very helpful tutorial.
You mean if there are brackets in a row of written instruction? That usually means a repeat of some sort. Do you have a specific example I can help with?
Thank you so much, you are amazing! 👏
Thanks so much for this video you made it so easy to understand!!!!
charts are the best! thanx for your video;) greetings from Norway!;)
MissGreyBlueEyes Thank you for the kind compliment.
Thank you for your clear and concise videos. They're the best!
I am currently doing a basket-like project that I want start with a flat circle in the round, then transition to a tubular pattern (shells or arches.) Is there a way to read or convert a flat pattern so it can be crocheted in the round?
Thank you this was very well explained.

Very helpful thank you 😊👍
hello I'm from Indonesia...thank you for your video
hi my name is Sarah spadel and I done a lot of crocheting and I am never did chart for saying thank you very much for showing me how
Although the symbol for the half double is the only one that has a yarn over, but doesn't have a slash as a part of the symbol
Finally I understand! Thank you
can you explain row 6 please? I can read the symbols but you skipped over that row to explain it stitch for stitch on how they work into row 5. Thank you, great video
Very helpful, thank you!!
Wow!! Thank you sooooo much🇿🇦
That's wonderful. Thank uh
Thank you very much 😘❤️💖
I am left-handed! You might want to point out that lefties start from L to R for row 1 and do the reversals for all the other rows! (Confusing for you righties? Now you know how we lefties feel trying to follow directions/charts for right-handers!)
What about scanning the chart and then flipping it horizontally before printing it again? Everything would be reversed.
Great tutorial
This vid is great. Do you still have the chart for download?
OMG Mary, thank you so much. This is awesome. What program do you recommend if I want it to create my own chart?
This is a huge help!!!!
Marly do you have instruction how to do Partial double crochet.
