All I can say to this is THANK YOU, DR. LEE!!! We unfortunately see so many patients like this at my ID (infections disease) practice saying, “well, my derm put me on doxy, clindamycin, etc so I thought it would be fine”without understanding how easy it is for them to be colonized and reinfecting themselves with new lesions. A short course of IV abx usually clears it up, but I feel horrible for them that they’ve gotten to that point when the results of a C&S could’ve dictated an effective PO treatment without them being so miserable for so long! PLEASE listen to her, people! It’s more common than you think, and easier to treat when you’re on the right antibiotic.

I love how she is very nice about this without hurting her feelings. But she's right. "Self-infecting" is the key term she uses. This is also sometimes related to nose-picking. The nose has a lot of those bacteria including staph that cause pimples around this area. Sometimes someone has terrible allergies (me) or a cold and blow their nose about 10 to 20 times daily (also me lol), but also sometimes this is a sign of nose-picking. The Spirit of Camphor will make her jump up to the ceiling and down again. Pre 1947, when the British National Health started, my father was the unofficial doctor for poor people in his village . He used the following remedies--
      1) Spirit of Camphor for cold sores
      2) Medical olive oil for ear wax and ear ache
      3) Germalene ointment for sore knees etc
      4) Cold water for burns and scalds

A cold sore (HSV-1 can be simplex or caused by genital herpes (HSV-2). The patient and their partner also needs to be checked and treated if it’s caused by HSV-2.
Unfortunately, people jump to conclusions when they see HSV-1 (the cold sore) because included are the “words” herpes, people’s mind tend to go to the worst rather than those unfortunate people who are prone to cold sores (HSV-1). Zovirax does't even help anymore when you get to this stage. It only is effective if you put it on when you feel the first tingling prickles. If you put it on to late the vesicles will have burst already. It then will cure as it normaly does.

That sure looks like a BAD cold sore \ herpes outbreak to me. It's probably her first outbreak, and she made the mistake of squeezing it - - NEVER do that! I did that once and my upper lip blew up from swelling. You'll quickly learn to put some cold sore medication on it at the first tingly sensation. They - maybe - pop the blister with a sanitized needle and dry it with hydrogen peroxide. Even with the best care it will take 10-14 days to completely disappear.

In 2005 I started a new job and started getting staph infections on my face. When I had the first one lanced and drained by my doctor she prescribed an antibiotic. The next evening around 7:30pm I got a call from another doctor in her practice saying the lab results showed a type of staph that needed a different antibiotic and he was calling it in to my pharmacy. When I said I'd pick it up the following morning he told me NO, go and get it tonight. Scared me.
I kept getting staph infections over the next year until finally the doctor prescribed both pills and an ointment I had to put in my nose. That finally did it and the infections stopped.

How many times does it have to be said that it is an INFECTED pimple. And dr lee explained that it looks like she may have been subconsciously or consciously picking or squeezing said pimple and then unfortunately managed to infect the area with Bacteria that was more than possibly on her fingers!!!
    A. If she tried to squeeze it and then it got infected it could for sure begins to look like one of the above (which I think is three different words for the same thing)
    B. When something gets infected the area starts to swell, if the would is open it would likely start to weep and it would get very red and angry looking a lot like a cold sore can get!
When things like this begin to scab over it can make the skin feel tight and itchy and not to mention to that it must be painful & uncomfortable to eat at which point some people then start to pick at the scab (not all of us do that but I know I’m a bugger for picking at scabs when they start pulling on the surrounding skin or itch) and not saying that she did but she could have easily made the infection worse by re picking on here)
