- White men rarely, if ever, are required to examine their own culture. In this timely and provocative talk, Welp speaks to his own experience becoming conscious of his white male culture, bias, and privilege as key tools to effective partnership across difference.
Michael Welp, PhD. is a co-founder of White Men as Full Diversity Partners (WMFDP). For 20 years, Welp has led pioneering workshops engaging white male leaders to create cultures of full inclusion. He focuses on how to engage white men to become more passionate advocates for inclusion and how they can partner better with people of color and white women. Welp has facilitated interracial team building with over a dozen South African corporations in his work with Outward Bound. His research on how white men learn about diversity led to founding WMFDP. Welp is the author of the recently published book, Four Days To Change: 12 Radical Habits to Overcome Bias and Thrive in a Diverse World.

As the saying goes, "If you want to know what it feels like to get wet, you don't ask a fish". These cultural blind spots are frequently misconstrued as racism... which exacerbates the problem. Also, every culture has its blind spots.

i'd like to add that when he says 'white male culture,' he means 'white american male culture.' I'm a white man but I'm from the Czech Republic, and there is not very much culturally that I have in common with white men in America.
Critical Race Theory is confusing. Just leave your brain at the door and it's best not to ask any questions.

I love the term "White culture" each European country has 8ts own distinct culture, and within the countries each region has it's own sub culture. I'm sure in America a white guy from new York has a different way of seeing the world than a white guy from Dakota

In using the example of a fish in water that rarely has ro leave the comfort of his environment as a reflection of white male culture.
Although some of what he is saying is true of most men, such as the need to "fix" whatever his wife is "talking about", that's pretty universal to men in general.

I am a man from Afghanistan..
I was born in Afghanistan, raised and been living here all my life, I am not a white man and have not been around one. In the mean time I see most of what he described as “white man culture” in myself.
I leave my emotions out of the way when dealing with something, I am at my most efficient and sharpest when I am alone, I would NEVER ask for directions if I am lost, while being aware that it is wrong and I don’t know why I do it, but still do it.. So I am more than sure it is not about culture of a white man, but I have no idea where it came from...
I agree with you, but I think that it mostly has to do with not 'white men' but rather the 'privileged.' I connect with him on some levels, but I'm definitely not a white man. However, I think you should focus more on his view of how our 'world' is a box and that we need to step outside of that box.
It matters less of who you are right now exactly, but more what you want and will be in the future.

Down here in South Louisiana we have cajuns, they have a culture all their own. From their accent to how they place their words in a sentence. I love hearing them talk, especially if I am talking to them. They speak Cajun English, it is a really cool sounding accent to me. They are definitely a culture of their own. They are good people, they come from a culture that watches over their own, as we all should. The way they place their words in a sentence differently, it is a very interesting thing to witness. Just thought I would share this information with you as to the cool culture we have in South Louisiana. I know other places have their own special culture, it seem all places do. Later.
Cajuns rock in Louisiana. They don't look at you as a Race but a person. I grew up in New Orleans. I live in NE Louisiana and people here just live like Humans with a few spoil apples in the bunch. A Culture doesn't have to be based on Race but the people you have things in common with.

This isn't negative criticism, simply an addendum to his intentions, but speaking as a POC, to those of you would say "this is so helpful and eye opening", you should watch this video with a person of color and read the comments with them so you can see they percieve it. I'm glad he gave this talk, and I'm glad you've taken something from it, but until you watch it with someone else, the lesson is incomplete.

All the comments on this video prove what he is saying about privilege. It’s as if discussing a group of people’s common behaviors observed in different regions of the world is in some way an attack on them. And what’s even more incredible is how dismissive everyone watching this is. One of the very things he discussed!
Cultural growth can never begin until people stop trying to explain why they are different from the whole, and start challenging causation of barriers still in existence in today’s world. We all have so many opportunities to take a step back and ponder our perception.
This speaker is highly underrated. His self awareness is absolutely incredible. Hats off to him. I would love to probe his thoughts.
The problem is that "privilege" has become the boogeyman for all of society's ills regardless of whether or not it actually applies to any given situation for a specific individual.
So using a couple of disagreements in a youtube comment section as evidence of privilege seems more like confirmation bias lol I find it strange that he implies that white men haven't examined there own culture because I thought thats what critical theory was about.

Did you even listen to the talk? Honestly we aren't aware of many of these privileges. You should be more open minded and empathetic. The speaker even said that most people assume we are aware and you're just confirming this.
I went to a meetup at a bar in Bangkok on my latest birthday, but didn't feel like drinking. Then a white man asked me why I would want to come to a bar if I didn't drink. I told him that it was because I came here alone, and didn't want to walk back to the bus station alone at night when being a bit drunk. He was surprised by my answer and wondered why I was so worried about such a thing. As a man from North America, he must have forgotten that it was pretty dangerous for a girl in a developing country to walk on the street at night, let alone being drunk.

Ok I don't get the other comments on here. I agree with everything that was said as a white Male myself. I personally believe I have been able to step out of the box of what my culture is many times with a simple resolution that I think all people of all backgrounds should at least attempt to do and that is try putting yourself in others shoes. If you don't understand where they're coming from then ask questions. You can never learn and improve your understanding of things if you don't ask. Doesn't mean that you are a different person just that you are a more informed one. I think all people should watch this and just think about why others feel the way they do.

There is no one white culture. I live in the Netherlands, most of us are white, our culture is vastly different to russians or albanians where most people are also white.

Great Ted Talk Michael Welp.
We are all exposed to politicization and agendas in much of the communication we experience, but I think this speaker is trying to bring awareness and to expand consciousness for those white men who could benefit. Having said that I would like him to make the the point in future talks that ALL majority cultures have privilege. Go to Japan. Go to China. Go to Somalia. You will find very strong cultural assumptions in all these places based on the fact that the majority culture's norms are like the air that people breathe. Adding this context would help lessen the element of judgement that always shadows this discussion.

Good talk. There's generally always a lot needed to be done, for people to better understand themselves and each other mutually, whatever their backgrounds. As noted, it's not helpful treating any particular group as "default" or not worth talking about. All groups deserve to be discussed and heard, and all groups deserve to try and find ways towards each other and to overcome misunderstandings. Stereotypes hurt everyone.
It would be a good idea to take this program to the congressmen on the hill. What the top is filtering down is destroying our country. God help us.

I’d highly recommend the book My Grandmother’s Hands by Resmaa Menakem. Basically we all need to do our own work on ourselves to fix the problems around race in society.
Your second sentence has me taking the recommendation of your first sentence.
I think introspection is possibly the single best quality a person can own.
Treat others as you would like to be treated. That's all that's necessary. Some might try to make it seem like rocket science or that we need new laws and new regulations, just stop conning people. Treat others as you would like to be treated. Problem solved.
I might suggest a modification, "Treat others as they would like to be treated." That can remove assumptions about my way being the right way of seeing the world and also help me listen to and honor other people's experience.

I appreciate where he’s attempting to go with this, but I don’t think anyone should speak on behalf of others. I’m fairly certain there are plenty of cultures with men who are taught not to cry and don’t ask for directions. I also know women who don’t need to make excuses for not coming to meetings-they’re either resourceful in different ways, or just as willing to get in a cab.

It's a positive start.
It really comes down to what a people put most of their time into. If you put a lot of time into sports you will tend to perfect it more than someone else. Just like putting a lot of time into gaining knowledge, the martial arts or anything else. Different cultures or nations of people just put more time into doing different things and may have perfected that thing more than another culture or race of people. I'm explaining this in a simple way, but hopefully this is not over someones head to not get, that it is a lot of truth to this observation (analogy). Then also diet may play a part. There are different types of edible vegetation on the planet that some people had access to that other tribes of people didn't have access to. Every tribe depending on where they settled on the planet had more access to something that other people didn't have access to. And this may have played a part that gives groups of people an edge over each other, in some way or another. If your (culture or people) put a lot of time into a particular thing, you will perfect that thing more than someone else or other nations of people. But this doesn't make you superior to other people. Why? Because someone is better than you are with something else. Being superior to other people is really a man made illusion. Only God is the superior one. Until you can create the universe like God, then you can never be superior to anyone on the planet.
He’s literally saying all “white” people think the same and act the same which is definitely not true. “White” American does not have the same as culture as German, Russian, Hungary etc... culture. Just like African Americans don’t have the same culture as African culture or Malaysian culture etc... just because u have the same skin complexion don’t make u think the same and act the same.

I like that he brought out the way to shift from coming from a place of self-defense when confronted with one's offensive behavior, to a place of taking responsibility. Most people (not just white men) are automatically defensive if you confront them with an offense. That immediate response is almost, always, "it's not my fault, it's that you're too easily offended". It takes only a moment to re-examine one's words or actions, with humility (humility is key) to see that the person just may have a point. Even if you know you meant no harm, it's humble to simply say I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. Can we talk further about why this action offended you and how we can work together to make sure it doesn't happen again? I think lack of humility and the unwillingness to say I'm sorry has a lot to do with discord in the work place and elsewhere.
We don't have to be right all the time. I personally thinks it takes a bigger person to say I'm sorry thank it does to defend, defend, defend.

No he didn't. He just shifted the blame to everyone who shares his genitals and skin colour. It's one of the most odious traits of these virtue signalling white people like this guy and Robin DiAngelo. THEY'RE the racists, THEY'RE the offensive ones, and rather than take responsibility for it, they blame ALL white people for it, ALL men.
It would be great if they DID take responsibility for themselves. But you don't sell books that way, I suppose.

Actually, my 30 years work experience, in a multicultural environment, was the opposite of what you are saying.
We were working together, having lunch together and few times a year taking a beer together after work.
Yes, there were some people who decided to have lunch with people from their communities, but that was their own choice, not because they were excluded from the bigger multicultural group.

As a white female I have learned my culture from the predjuges of coloured people.i thank them because I have become stronger. I also have learned most about my self from my relationship with God .

When we were all babies, we didn't give af about race or anything like that. It was LEARNED. Please love yourself to know that you CAN change and be a better person. The man even mentioned that in the video that everyone has work to do but he is speaking to the experience he knows - as a white man himself. Of course, if someone chooses to misunderstand, they will miss the point. It's on YOU to accept what resonated with you but just have an open heart. You know how much of a relief it is to feel that even if someone doesn't know you, they will do there best to connect with you from the heart? No matter the race? That's what HUEmans need. Love what's being done here but we need to dive deeper. The point of diversity is not to help 'other races' or incentivize learning through personal gain - the point of diversity is to accept the inevitable, to learn more and find a genuine connection with differences in order to better our collective community as a whole. This is a great start, but does not quite get to the meat of the issue, which is the lack of questions being asked, and the genuine interest to learn more. As a white male you come from a position of power, and it's difficult not to elect yourself as the leader in charge of change. I do agree that it is the responsibility of those with certain privileges to use that platform to expose certain biases - let's just make sure that this doesn't become the only end goal. We do not need heroes, we need empaths.
