For Sori's question why this wasn't more popular, Vin is absolutely correct. The Maiden catalogue is so vast, there's a lot of absolutely amazing songs that don't get the attention they deserve just because they have to share it with all the other amazing songs.
Where Eagles Dare is the same story

Honestly most of the Piece of Mind album is like that. There really isn't a bad song on there (I'll defended Quest for Fire until I die)

I'm not sure what this entire idea of "popular" is being based on?? Where I came from ALL of this stuff was HUGE when I was a kid!

    • @Slev00
      @Slev00 4 года назад +1

Generally, anything they released as a single tends to be a lot bigger than most of the other stuff on the albums, purely due to exposure.
Further, their faster, stompier ones tend to have a broader appeal and be more popular too.
A more progressive, slower, album-only track, while awesome, is never going to be as popular.
That said, this is amongst my favourite Maiden tracks, and I say that as a Maiden die-hard!

@@johnmclellan2257 I agree (now). Back in the 80's, I don't know why but this album didn't hit me the way other 'Maiden albums did. Back then, I would have placed Power Slave above Piece of Mind. Today when I listen to these records, Power Slave has couple of great songs and (Ryme, 2 Minutes & Power Slave) the rest is filler and Piece of Mind is full of classics! But that's just me. It's weird how tastes change over decades.

One reason is that the religious right was in control of the country and spreading their whole "kids are becoming evil and killing themselves over hidden messages in songs they hear" garbage, putting the fear of their god into every poor kid and family, much like they tried the whole "Satanic Panic" thing with D&D (shout out to Critical Role & Geek&Sundry).
Either Ozzy Osbourne or Rob Halford said: "If I were going to put hidden messages that could control people in my music, I would say 'Buy more albums'".
Another reason was they got very little if any airplay, ever. Their fandom was built early on, almost entirely upon, word of mouth and fanzines.

You didn't even mention Steve Harris ..who's one of the best rock bassist of all time. This band has no weakness. They all can play their ass off. Til this day they still sell out massive venues. I learned to play bass guitar to this song as a teenager. I’d play the song and keep stopping and rewinding the tape until I finally got all of the bass line - no tabs on the net or RUclips videos to help back then! It took ages. Steve Harris is a master on bass line melodies and song structure and he is a huge part of the Iron Maiden sound.
By the way - the opening verse is actually a direct quote from G.K. Chesterton’s hymn, “O God of Earth and Altar.”

  • @adamhendrickson512
    @adamhendrickson512 4 года назад +13

This song is about spiritual alchemy, from the Hermetic/Golden Dawn/Aleister Crowley tradition.
It starts out talking about the tragedy of the human condition, then explains the method to achieve Illumination and rise above it.
"A clever path for the fools who know
the Secret of the Hanged Man-the smile on his lips."
This refers to two keys from the Tarot - Key 0, "The Fool" and Key XII, "The Hanged Man". The Fool in this context represents the spiritual seeker ready to take a leap of faith in his quest for enlightenment. The Hanged Man refers to the 23rd path on the Qabalistic Tree Of Life, and represents the reversal of consciousness or suspension of the mind that is the object of transcendental meditation.
Achieving a state of suspended mind is required as part of this technique for awakening Kundalini energy within the body, which rises up the spine through the body's energy centers. When this energy is raised sufficiently it creates elevated states of consciousness that bring on higher spiritual awareness and a sense of transcendence. The second verse and chorus refer to this process:
"She came to me with a serpent's kiss,
As the Eye of the Sun Rose on her lips"
Kundalini Shakti is the female Goddess-personification of this energy and is often depicted as a serpent coiled around the base of the spine. This refers to the Kundalini rising and the blinding spiritual states that accompany it.
"The light of the Blind-you'll see," promise of the enlightened state that can be achieved.
"The venom that tears my spine," - again, the rising Kundalini energy as it coils around the spine.
"The Eyes of the Nile are opening-you'll see." - As the Kundalini reaches the 3rd eye and crown chakras, a new sense of vision emerges - the enlightened state. This is represented in ancient Egyptian art by the figure of the cobra (for Kundalini energy) emerging from the center of the Pharaoh's forehead.
The last verse is about the benefits of the completion of this process, and the exalted state the seeker achieves, with a reminder that this is achieved by closing one's eyes and moving inward to meditative states of consciousness.

I kind of think the "Thunder" is referring to suffering. As imperfect humans we are very prideful and often feel like there are no consequences for our actions. God allowing us to feel pain and suffering is God's way of reminding us of our frailty and in turn he is trying to get us to humble ourselves and rely on him. I feel like that is what God wants us to learn from what we're dealing with right now with this virus.

This was my alliance pick and I'm extremely glad to see it. This song has been requested since the very first few Iron Maiden reactions and it's great to see things come full circle. This is one of the first Iron Maiden songs Bruce was allowed to have a writing credit on. The lyrics are a combination of Christianity, Egyptian mythology, and the writings of Aleister Crowley. The song is 5 levels deep in references. Bruce and Steve are masters of their writing craft.
This is where I throw in another request with high level referencing. Please react to David Bowie - Time (Live Glass Spider Tour 1987).

That's right. The first verse of Revelations is taken straight from this hymn.

One of my personal favorite Maiden songs...... and great live! Powerslave is another favorite. Bruce actually pilots the band's 747 when they tour..... check out Eddie one some time.

If the music industry ever came together and accepted Iron Maiden as the should've, there would be all Maiden radio channels, parades celebrating Maiden's very existence, Eddie would be the number one selling Halloween costume every year, band members would be hosting game shows and other assorted TV specials, guest judging on American Idol, and well, you get the idea. The music industry just couldn't handle the shakeup. They rely heavily on their status quo. So the conspiracy continues 40 years later...

this is my favorite Maiden song, I want to get a tattoo. covering the verse, it would be a back piece. it would feature Eddie, dressed has an archaeologist, holding a lantern pointing at 4 hieroglyphs on a wall. the first one would cover she came to me on a serpents kiss, the second would cover moonlight catches silver tears, the third, so we lay in a black embrace. obviously the fourth would be so I sat watched and waited. I can see it all in my head and it looks badass.

So, since you said this was a concert from 1985, I had to comment. The Piece of Mind tour was my first heavy metal concert! I was a freshman in High School. My best friend grabbed some tickets and we went and saw them. HOLY CRAP what an awesome show!!!
I also appreciate you coming in with a Christian perspective. Your idea about Adam and Eve- I NEVER thought about the song that way. It blows my mind with your comments.
    Thank you.

Blood Brothers is one of their most emotional tracks and it’s not because of lyrics, it’s the final guitar solo. Live version from Rock in Rio 2001 is the standout 🤘

I had the pleasure of seeing Maiden support this awesome album. They were fantastic....Eddie was about 14 feet tall. Some jerk tried to steal Steve Harris's iconic blue bass, Steve punched the guy, then security took care of the rest and, of course Iron Maiden never came back to Memphis, TN.

The Best live version of 'Revelations' is from the Iron Maiden video documentary, "Flight §§§". Don't let the title throw you. I became an official Iron Maiden fan just from this documentary alone and the quality of these live recordings and crowd response~ even better audio quality live than the original studio album. Please check it out.

Hahaha! I always get a kick out of people who claim bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, and Slayer are Satanic. lol! It just proves that people innately judge superficially and don't dig deeper. It's quite sad.

If the live video you watched is from 1984/1985 (the World Slavery Tour in support of Powerslave, which spawned the Live After Death album), then the belt buckle (of Bruce's) you're trying to figure out "what it is" : it is (if my memory serves) the face of Eddie. Most of the oval shape is composed of his white hair with the face centered set with "ruby" eyes.
