This was actually the title song from a 1965 screwball-comedy film. Tom originally wasn't crazy about it because he didn't get it ("pussycat" was a common hipster term for women in the late '50s and early '60s), but he eventually did record it after being convinced by the song's writing team (the great Burt Bacharach/Hal David) ... and it ended up earning an "Original Song" Oscar nomination and became a hit single (#3 in the USA). It's a playful song very much of its time.

Technically not a 'Woody Allen Film', it was merely his first screenplay that got produced (Charles K. Feldman), directed by Clive Donner. Woody got his acting debut in it as a minor character. It starred Peter O'Toole, Peter Sellers, Capucine, Romy Schneider, Paula Prentiss, Ursula Andress, etc. 'Pussycat' was a beatnik term for one's female LOVER, or Sex Interest - hardly same as 'baby-girl', except for the pedophiles.

Tom Jones would actually interview people, perform in comedy sketches, and of course would sing and perform with other stars as well as doing his own songs. A lot of double entendres in "What's New Pussycat" , hence the blushing women, and was a very popular song of the time. My late mother used to love Tom Jones, and would play his records all the time. Tom Jones had a musical variety show on ABC for 3 years (1969 - 1971). At the end of every show Tom would come out and sing a few songs. The set seen in this clip is the set used for the end of the show. My mom was a big fan, so this show was on in our house every week. I used to get a big kick out of this part of the show because, inevitably, Tom would start to go crazy and start taking off pieces of clothing during a song. First the jacket, next the tie, then the vest, and finally several buttons of his shirt seemed to come unbuttoned. Since I was a guy, I wasn't turned on, but I always had to laugh. For years after this I used to do a Tom Jones impersonation, and this was how I did it I'd sing "It's Not Unusual" and start taking of my jacket etc. It was always good for a laugh and my wife always enjoyed it.

Barry and Tom were catering to two different generations. Teens to younger adults for Barry and 40s and up for Tom. I could appreciate some of his songs though at the time. The Bee Gees were in a different hemisphere and much more popular for people of my age. Look at Toms audience and you will see more middle aged adults. My Moms friend really liked TJ.

Did your mom's 45 have the little snippet at the very beginning where it sounded like something crashed? After that the song actually began.

Tom Jones followed by Barry Gibb. I saw Tom in concert in Memphis TN in 1978. My mom carried me with her because we had been watching his TV special and she wanted me to see him in person. Well, I was already a tiny fan, but then I became a huge fan. LOL! To this day, I find him to be a very sexy man that can make any song he sings make your heart flutter. I of course love the Bee Gees, but I have to put Tom first.

The set is the same because the clips have been from his TV show "This Is Tom Jones" which was on ABC for 3 seasons from 1969 - 1971. He had all the great entertainers from the day on including Cass Elliott, Paul Anka, Lulu, Sammy Davis, Jr., Glen Campbell, Dusty Springfield, John Denver, the 5th Dimension, the Dave Clark Five, and The Bee Gees !!! Kissing women from the audience was common and expected - they loved it and the audience loved it and the sponsors loved it. It was all for fun.

That was the title song of a Woody Allen scripted comedy movie starring Peter O Toole, Peter Sellers, and Ursula Andress amongst others. As far as I remember it is about a guy who has a lot of women but mixes up or forgets their names, so he calls everyone Pussicat :D

My daughters (that are now 24 and 22) loved a movie called "Cats & Dogs" in the early 2000's. I had already known this song. But when this movie came out, and it was the theme song, it blew up. I heard it every day from my 3 year old and 2 year old, since i bought them the soundtrack on a cd. If you ever do a family movie reaction, that would be a great one.

The reason it's the same set up is that he had a weekly show at night. Its was not only adults that had a crush on him. When I'd hear him singing I'd creep down the stairs and watch the show, I was 4 or 5. My mom never knew.😍

You guys are great. Tom was on the Mark and Brian show, in the morning out of LA. He did a song, (It's not unusual !). It was hilarious, When He was singing, Brian came in with a horrible trumpet, as a joke. He was laughing so hard he had a hard time completing the song. Great radio, Mark and Brian show, klos 95.5 Los Angeles

I always thought this was a silly song but it was one of his most iconic famous songs of his career and what people tended to connect with him more than most others. It was a big hit back then and they always wanted him to perform it at his shows. "What's New Pussycat?" is the theme song for the movie, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Jones was skeptical about the song when first approached about it. Jones said it took convincing from Bacharach to perform it:
"When I first heard it I thought, 'Christ! What the bloody hell do they want me to sing this for?' But Burt Bacharach explained, 'I want the big voice to sing this bloody crazy song.' And you put it on, it’s a classic." And sure enough Burt was right because it became a huge hit for him.

This is a Burt Bacharach (RIP) Hal David composition. You’ve played a bunch and probably didn’t even know it. Supposedly, What’s New Pussycat? is how notorious ladies man Warren Beatty used to answer the phone back in the ‘60s. So it’s kind of a poke in the ribs at Warren.

Tom Jones was really popular in the late 60s. He had a tv variety show. That was what did it for him in America. Barry really didn't get popular in America until the late 70s and the disco thing. The Bee Gees weren't big in America until then.
