- In this video we begin installing mechanical modifications to my F36 BMW 440i with the gen 1 B58 engine. This would be similar to an F30 or F32 340i or 440i.
I install a downpipe along with a BMS intake. I take it for a test drive after to give you my impressions as well.
This will be a first in a series of videos where we take this BMW from bone stock to modified.
These are good beginner mods if you're just picked up a similar car.
If you're interested in purchasing the intake you can do so here (affiliate):

Thank you sharing your knowledge about used bmw upgrades love it. I recently am considering buying a project car to work on. ✌🏽✌🏽
I been binge watching this dude's videos. Very nice 👌
Love the content just wish there was more!
You make every job look so easy! Great video and content! Thank you
He really does. I've NEVER worked on any of my bimmers, and stayed anywhere near as calm as he is...
Can you do a video on how you got started/why you got into cars and RUclips? You have the best BMW technical videos on RUclips!
Niiice! Good job with documenting the install and videography.
Great vids!!! Keep it up!
Got a F36N too and i am
Happy af.
Yes man did the down pipes on the 11 x5m didn't expect the bubble either but i love it.
On my 6th BMW. Third M57. Just superb superb cars.
My little B48 230i has almost the same burbles with the BMS and a Dinan exhaust. Fun as hell.
My guyyyyy, the 440 is clean. Glad we got some b58 content but it's got me missing the n54 stuff :(
Yeah, I ALWAYS prefer N54 content to ANY other bimmer or car.
Great job and well presented 👍
Great new beginning, remember high octane gasoline for high C.R. and best oil
BimmerN53
I love your work. The videos are great.
That was a great video bro.
I Still got the n54 but cant wait to see this after you do your magic
I'll take my N54 over this car any day. Nothing like the N54 E92.
Great install good job
You should invest in a quick jack, it makes it easy to get under the car. Love your videos.
Looks so much easier than N54 down pipes
Excellent set of first mods for the B58 and sounds great. The N55 intake layout is nicer for long aluminum or carbon fiber intakes, but shorter is better on the B58, just not as pretty. Same for charge pipes and front mounted intercoolers on the N55.
The fact that there are already B58 Gen 1 and Gen 2 engines is interesting. That deserves a video Phd dissertation. BMW is making major mechanical upgrades in LCI models on occasion, so sometimes the buyer is unaware, especially when looking at used BMWs without a window sticker. Newer is not always better, except for the case of the B58 vs N55.
Did the nice OLED tail lights come with the LED headlights?
Thanks, yes they came stock.
Love your channel. Your living the dream with all these bmws. I have a f10 which I’m in love with aswell. You should look into upgrading to the digital dash for this car. Cheers
Love the f10, enjoy it.
After having a 335i n54, I also got an x3 2017 n55, stock exhaust has some bubble to it I was surprised.
Lets get this man a lift !!!!
man the install for the downpipe looks so much easier than on the n54
It is...
looking good and sounds good. how much does this, You said, BMS intake cost retail?? Also how many extra horses is added by installing this intake to this engine itself? ty great stuff
My Freaking Gawd that's Amazing!!!! 😍😍🔥🔥
You should get a Stage 2 HPFP and flow max turbo
Quick and indeed finally a good sounding 6 cyl turbo. Honestly I find the N54 sound like crap while the N55 is OK. S55 due to unequal length exhaust also crap and B58 is great!
Keep it up man, love it as always.
You're just parroting what he said.
Craig Ellsworth he didn’t mention N54 nor S55. Btw you’re aware of the YT algorithm? They need comments in order to grow :)
Nice work...i need another BMW. 😂
Im disaopinted how much simpler the design of this engine bay is than the e90 n54.
Now all you got is installing a full 3 inch exhaust. i got to say still sounds tame to me.
I had Downpipe installed in mine too KKK. F30 328.
You happy with them ? What manufacturer?
@@davidwehr Very happy. It’s from Brazil. I don’t know if they sell it in the USA.
Have u ever had a 93EB error code in regards to fault in passenger restraint system effecting airbag belt tension An belt force limiter ? If so what was the issue ..im haven this problem now when I left work yesterday An it just randomly popped up it’s now throwing a bunch of false codes even made my idrive controls stop working
What is the gasket called? And can I get it from dealership? And what are you doing to the O2 sensor (the solution cleaning process thingy) before putting them in?
RK tunes off the shelf map would do good on this, i would have also tried to run the intakes directly behind the kidney grills to get fresh air
You don't need fresh air IF you have a FMIC.
@@AquaStevae Getting fresh air helps.. lowers IAT,s a turbo sucking up hot air regardless of the intercooler setup will never be as efficient as a turbo pulling in fresh outside air.. proven on the dyno multiple times.. your response is simply you guessing
@@hasani2555 That couldn't be any more wrong. It's insignificant results. The turbos are going to heat up regardless as they compress the air, and air temp makes little difference at that stage. It becomes more significant in the later stages, thus the intercooler. Been racing for decades, and this whole "cold intake" campaign has ALWAYS been bullshit at that stage of the aspiration. And has NEVER been shown to produce any results whatsoever. I moved my DCI's from the right side of the engine to the left side, where there is higher heat from the exhaust, and my dyno numbers went UP, from the shorter bigger and more direct inlets and outlets. Isn't that strange? I went from a cooler area of intake, to a much hotter area, and my dyno numbers went up significantly. Cold intake my ass.
@@AquaStevae RK Tunes says otherwise based on testing done on his video.. After your power figures went up did you switch the inlets back to the area of cooler air to see if the numbers reverted back to the lower figures, I own a 2007 Toyota Hilux Non-Intercooled Turbo Diesel, at nights when the air is alot cooler there is a noticeable difference in power verses during the day time when the temperature is 2 to 4 degrees hotter, When the turbo is pulling in cooler air the torque difference is noticeable verses when pulling in hot air and my vehicle does not have a intercooler.. Any explanation for that? BTW vehicle is a stock common rail diesel running 13 psi
@@hasani2555 Yeah, I never said cooler air doesn't allow an engine to make more power. It clearly does. I said the differences inside the engine compartment from the cooler side to the warmer side at THAT STAGE OF IT'S ROUTE doesn't make any difference when you have turbos and an intercooler. Your thinking is shallow, with a "one size fits all" type of conclusion. NOTHING works that way.
Great video. One question, would you happen to know if the VSRF down-pipe would work on a g30 5 series with the gen 1 b58.
I believe it does.
It should
Somebody is going to get smart and make Catch Can Kits for F25 N55 engines!
I have a 2017 440i gran coupe B58 and had my rear differential leaking back in May and the technician advised me that the leak isn't bad enough to cause any problems. So I came back in October of 2022 and had the rear differential input seals replaced. Now last week I start hearing a loud noise when driving and took it in to a local shop and I found that the rear diff has now totally failed. Should this be covered by the manufacturer or dealer? This isn't right...have you heard of any of these issues? Thanks
will it bring up check engine light and if so how do you get rid of it ? I want to install downpipe in my G20 and I want to know how to proceed with it?
Very nice. But doesn't the car throw a check engine code without the front cat? Or did you delete it by software?
Btw I talked to a Belgium n54 driver. He said I can easily go for catless downpipes on my 335i because the Dutch inspection allows having only a secondary cat. He passes the insane Belgium inspection catless on an E60 mix.....My question is; Is MHD or jb4 a must to get rid of the check engine light when putting downpipes on the car? Thanks in advance, regards Nico.
never jb4
Can i do these similar mods on 320d ? or are they strictly for petrol engine above 3L?
Does it stink? I remember when I had headers my car smelled so bad I had to install high flow cats.
Problem with an open engine high flow filter is that it’s just going to suck up all the hot air from the engine compartment which decreases your power. There’s been a lot of tests proving this concept, without an air box sealed from engine bay air you’re going to have a drop in power, might want to find a cold air intake option instead.
it heat soaks during stand still a little faster. But during driving you don´t have an measurable IAT differences. CAI like this even reduce WGDC when tuned.
Remember this engine has an intercooler and it will decrease anyway the hot air temperature when going inside the intake manifold and combustion chamber! 👌
What shop do you work at. I need to take it to you already in houston
Do you upgrade the charge pipe on the B58 like on the N55 ?
Super
Nice .. with XHP would be even faster.
Hey man, which 02 spacer should I get for bmw b58 catless downpipe. Please send link, I am so lost 🙏🏾
What does better this 440i or your 335i
👏🏻
Liked and subscribe
I’ve been curious about getting a downpipe for more sound but I want to keep the stock tune would a O2 sensor spacer be enough? I am concerned that it might mess with the ecu reading it. I appreciate your opinion on the matter
Youll get a light
Perhaps a mild stage one tune? I don't think a spacer is ideal.
If you can stomach the premium they command, there's a couple catted downpipes that guarantee no CEL. I'm running an Active Autowerke catted on my '21 M240 and absolutely love it - put it on as soon as the break-in was done (we'll call it 1300mi after driving to shop) and I just crossed 8k miles without a hiccup. Only downside like I mentioned is the cost, they're usually like 2x the price of catless
Hey I’m looking to finally get into a new BMW. I’m not sure if to get a 440i rwd or awd. What do you suggest. I’m coming from an e91 328i. So big difference regardless.
Hi! F36 440i Gran coupe M-performance owner here! i have the RWD, don’t get the X-drive (AWD) because it’s indeed more complicated due to the additional system to move the front wheels... 😉👌also less weight and easy to get lowered with EIBACH or H&R springs. Trust me... you won’t regret it if you get the RWD...
Anyone have any experience with higher mileage first gen b58's with modest mods. How do they hold up etc. I understand this is higher mileage.
Why did you get rid of the m340?
I would not full throttle an xDrive car often in the middle of a turn on a grippy surface like asphalt or pavement, it stresses the front of the car a lot resulting in premature wear (probably different with an actual M-xDrive). We've had many front drive shaft replacements on F30 and F10 4-cylinder diesels due to enthusiastic driving style at around 90-100k miles, because the rubber tears and lets all the dirt in to the front drive shafts.
Did not have this issue with a G20 but in a G20 had to replace all ball joints in the front after 100 000 miles (160-170k kilometers).
I know it is fun, but from my experience, i would avoid doing that.
Now driving a brand new G20 320d xDrive with mild-hybrid technology (i hate the mild-hybrid tech, makes braking smoothly near impossible), we'll see how this one lasts.
All of those cars were just regular european 20d N47 184hp and B47 190hp diesels.
how does one get to make a 320d sound a little like the intro of this video?
@@acecombat3430 you don't. A 4-cylinder diesel is never going to sound good.
@@Manakuski well thats disappointing. i was hoping I would find a solution to how boring the 320d sounds but it looks like ill have to stick with petrol cars in the future.
@@acecombat3430 it'll still sound better than an electric car...
Changing factory CAI for hot under hood air intake. DCI performance compromise lives. There is a reason the factory CAI is closed to the outside ambient air but few internet tuners understand why. Sigh.
Is this a sport wire catalyst down pipe? It will be interesting to see how emissions testing progresses.
It's mostly for induction noise, not expecting much from it performance wise.
Where is my i6 diesels? :P (you can achieve real good numbers with those diesels, while driving like 18-20km/l)
Diesel is for agricultural/commercial use.
@@Kvickification wtf are you talking about lol, hahaha, I'm driving a E90 3.0 diesel with 355hp / 707nm. It is FUN to drive due to the high amount of torque. It pulls like crazy.
And i got 45mpg. You cannot find a petrol car that can achieve that. (Weak ass pisser engines = petrol)
Hi! 👋😃 B58 owner here! (F36 440i Gran coupe) Do you have already 108K miles in your car??? At this point, what are your thoughts in concrete about the engine? it is holding well and pretty reliable if you change your oil and keep on point the maintenance? i have only 30K miles in my engine and i just want to have the best advice from an owner with a high mileage engine as you! Many thanks! 😃👌PS, no mods or tune at all in my engine. Only MPPSK.
Jo just bought an F36 as well and i am planning in changing the oil every 20k Miles. But i would also like to know, what kinda maintenance is important for this car. Bought ist at 38k miles
@@thanu2368 The B58 is a beast and very reliable, the oil is the life and main factor to keep an engine healthy, especially because of lubrication in the turbo to avoid premature wear. Change it every 15K miles just for peace of mind. A dirty oil will eventually block the engine solenoids and, in the B58 engine they are facing towards the firewall, so it will be a pain in the a... to remove them for cleaning. Keeping the oil and filter always clean is the key. Keep also and eye in the reservoirs of coolant (both) and don’t wait to much to change sparkplugs. Hope this helps to keep running our engines just fine as the first day 😉👌
Does it smell?
Wow, thats simple. What did you do to eliminate the cel?
Nothing yet but we'll talk about that in a future video.
My cels been on since i installed my hi flow vfrs dp, doesn't bother me
@@VehicularDIY definitely curious about this as well. I only installed the bms intake and got cel. When scanning I get codes (air mass too low, Venturi nozzle signal permanently stuck, and intake pipe plausibility pressure too high). Wondering if you are seeing the same
I did a dual res delete on my 440i and then flashed aggressive burbles for 2.4 sec on mhd stage 1 91 tune on stock dp and it sounds pretty damn good
what is the solution for the check engine light after installing downpipes ??
Tune
@@koko2loko1 as far as i know it doesnt work. JB4 tune for, example, just removes the annoying check engine light and I heard some people advising against it. same for spacer
I had a tune as well, I've grown quite fond of my cel always on🤣
no check engine light for the downpipe?
It could come if not tuned.
Can cold start be disabled through MHD? How about for N54?
Yes and yes ;)
Yup lol
I think you will forget about the e90 now that you have a new toy 😬
Well it's the only manual so still enjoy driving it. Just needs a single turbo now.
@@VehicularDIY oh yeah I wanna see that install detailed by you , that would've the best N54 single turbo DIY , I gotta go for single too
Should of just drilled out the cats on the old down pipe and return the vrsf.
Just trying to save my brotha some money… vrsf is dope but I would rather spend that money on the vrsf intercooler instead. The other one is just a $300 tube
there are also diesel BMWs btw
Yeah I never see them in the road in Texas.
Never understood how an uncovered "cold air intake" takes in cold air when it's surrounded by hot ass engine heat.
INTERCOOLER!!!
Do you still have a paypal link?
Soooo much easier than the DP's on my e90 335i.. fml
Thats crazy its a 2018 with 108k miles. My 2014 335i has 43k and its stressing me out lol
Vrsf support is hella wack I tried to get an exhaust tip from them for their exhaust system and they told me they don’t sell them. What kind of bullshit is that. I will not b buyin Vrsf no more due to that bullshit. And the fitment wasn’t that great
You should consider learning basic grammar.
I own three BMW's and won't do this to any of them! Just cause I don't have turbos.
Can I get a F for all us non turbo bmws
„See how it sounds...“
stupid music playing in the background....
Alright then
Compared to old BMWs (M5 E34, M3 E46, M5 E39, M5 E60,...) they all sound dont sound very good. Sounds so plastic an fake.
can you stop clickbaiting so damn hard. Love your channel but its so vague its annoying.
U gotta play the algorythm to get views
I can confidently say that if I did this car wouldn't be on the channel. The first sentence of the description always says what the video is about and the thumbnail at least strongly implies what to expect from the video.
Actually your MST intake is a downgrade. Keep it stock with drop in filter.
Less clickbait titles please. Say what the heck you're doing.
