Ok, im glad im not crazy. This is a really big problem. It even extends into video games as well. There is a REALLY POPULAR game from China called Genshin Impact, and there was a recent expansion to the game that is based on a combination of African and South American culture. The inspiration is everywhere in the game, but the problem is the new playable characters who are HEAVILY inspired by poc culture are nearly all white, or incredibly pale to the point of them no longer being people of color. They’ve taken the fun and pretty parts of the culture and left out the melanin. We’re good enough for inspiration, but not appealing enough to be seen, up front in the open.
I always wanted to play Genshin Impact but, unfortunately, we couldn't get dark-skinned characters 😭 Idk why it is such a battle to ask for POC representation in games!
It's true that white people cannot relate to POC characters. Or at least It's hard to them to relate to POC characters in media where they were excluded like fantasy or sci-fi (especially fantasy). Because they have no problem watching a movie or tv show with black being in some gangsta shit, slavery or in some cliche black stories hollywood like to portray. That being said, was acolyte a good tv show? Now of course there were some racism and misogyny behind the outrage of the acolyte. But we have to be honest, the acolyte wasn't that good. That's funny right now I am watching the lord of the rings tv show and I enjoy it so much and I take so much pleasure to see those racist and misogynistic people cry about it because this show cannot be canceled.
I mean I never liked watching Star Wars but Acoylote pulled me into the show 🤷🏾♀️ I think the main problem I come across is that there are plenty of shows with “bad writing” However, I noticed the shows that get canceled first are the ones with POC characters which is concerning you know
You know what the REAL reason why they hate The Acolyte is if they can't use any other words than "woke" or not bring up the race of the main leading actors... Also looking at the people who are complaining about the show tells me everything I need to know.
I relate to a lot of black characters: Will from fresh prince, Static from Static Shock, and even Moon girl just to name a few. I like characters that are likeable, have a good amount of personality, and are well written. I lot of diverse characters nowadays are obvious Tokens, they got bare minimum personality and have very bland dialogue. The companies who make these shows don’t truely care, they just want to have good publicity. I don’t want to relate to corporate and soulless characters.
You hit the mark about ur own experience. Any well-written character should be able to be relatable to ALL demographics. Me being Asian, I’ve related to almost every racial type of character- because they were good! When a POC character is written for the sake of POC (and not even something like culture), it takes away the opportunity of audience relation. I think there have been a lot of successful POC main characters (Miles Morales as one example), and we need to keep it that way, as what I’ve been talking to applies to white characters. Just because a character IS WHITE shouldn’t be the main reason why they’re relatable or interesting.
Yes, thank you for this!! We should have good characters who happen to be POC, not the other way around! And I’m also glad we have the Spiderverse movies so people can see that it is indeed possible.
I wholeheartedly agree. As a black woman, I never had a problem relating to characters if they had a good storyline, and good morals that made me feel some type of emotion regardless of race. Ofc I'd love to see some positive representation as well, so I don't understand why it's considered such a problem to cast a black person, or any minority for that matter for a main role. Having a character's sole purpose be their race is obviously gonna make the movie flop. I know many artists who make AMAZING storylines with black/poc characters, but sadly they're not pushed, and instead we got movies with good storylines but less representation, and even though I appreciate the story, I think representation is important now more than ever because for some reason we progressed backwards and it seems like people are more racist now in 2024 than they were in the 1990s>. Actually, scratch that, even the 90s seemed better than now. We actually had sitcoms and black characters. I thought we were supposed to progress not go back further than we were.
Right! Why do I have to go back in time just to see proper representation? It doesn't make sense, especially when we live in a generation that is so prideful of them becoming more aware of social issues. Btw, hello fellow ARMY!! 💜
My problem with the new little mermaid and whatever is... Did disney just forget they can make original movies???? THey chose a good person to cast a black Ariel, i think she did good, but I think she would've been better if she were her OWN princess
I don’t believe that they forgot to make original movies but more so they chose profit over creativity. Honestly, the new Ariel movie warmed my heart, but I wish that Disney would make more efforts in creating original movies!
@missprofessionalyapper That's what made Disney princess well.. Princess. They had their own story to tell. I feel like I should mention that I'm white [however I'm queer + trans] just because Disney and other greedy corporations think reamigining the og princesses as the 'woke' race is what we want when it's like... No? We want originality. We want diversity Reminder; The same people made Princess and the Frog, one of my fav Disney movies because the mc is likeable. It was something NEW, different than what we've seen. Not because she's a reskin of a white princess
My personal problem with the Little Mermaid situation was how obviously inauthentic it was. Disney was trying so hard to make it seem like they hired her for her "talent" and "acting skills," when we all know dang well that is a big fat lie. They just did it to start controversy and create an excuse to accuse their audience of being "bigots" and scapegoat them as the reason why their movies fail. *sigh* that poor poor actor deserved better...
I believe they had another motive than making a talented black woman their lead. What that motive is, we can always speculate. Yet, what I know for sure is that they need to make more efforts to have POC leads and more authentic creativity in their movies!
What i hate is that the white producers, writers, and directors are being ignored and the poc actors abd voice actors are getting the brunt of the abuse when these inauthentic casting happens
Is it possible that I can connect you to a Black artist that you can commission to make a RUclips sona/icon? I get you are starting channel, but because you are a Black content creator that discusses about these sort of topics, that gives you even more reason to not use AI 1)It comes across as its impossible to make art of Black people in different styles 2)It’s most likely stolen from Black artists or models who already don’t get recognition and pay compared to their white counterparts (which expanding on point 2 a bit, white people sure do love using ai to make black characters, but wouldn’t support us when we actually made our own) I don’t mean to come off as rude btw, I love to see more Black RUclipsrs discussing this stuff. But as an artist myself surrounded by other Black artists, this does more harm than good, and honestly you also deserve better
I would definitely be open to connections! If I’m being honest I didn’t think a lot of people would see my videos 😅 so I didn’t really put that in mind. I apologize for that!
I cannot relate to badly writen characters. The race is not important. Bring back good shows and we will watch it. I will never watch a show because the character is white or black, only interesting.
I was the same as well but as of right now, I am rooting for diverse casts because it’s crazy interconnected the world is, but we still have mainly white casts. I would rather watch something that is not centered on the white audience than shy away from a POC show just because the story is not “good”
@@missprofessionalyapper Wouldn't that harm the idea of POC characters then? Most people only care about how good things are, rather than what things are. And the fact you and others are willing to consume anything with melanin even if it's (considered) bad. It degrades the reputation. Showing that "Them darkies will accept anything" instead of demanding not only black media, but high quality black media.
I don't believe that it will degrade POC's reputation because it has never been done with predominantly white casts. There are so many bad stories out there that could degrade the reputation of a white person but it doesn't. Obviously, I'm not saying companies should produce trash for black audiences, but it does not have to be exceptionally good either. Most media nowadays is not “good” but that doesn't deter people from watching it and enjoying it. All I'm saying is that media with POC characters should have more grace than rather being this perfect creation because it is limiting us from seeing more diverse casts…I hope that makes sense 😅
You believe that the majority of people hate the acolyte because there's poc & women in it not because it's a show with terrible writing so any discussion you give of pop culture & media is hereby irrelevant.
People who say that they can’t relate to POC characters says that they don’t see POC as people
I definitely agree with this! A lot of people don't want to admit this.
All of this
Yep. They don't want to see POC period, whether in real life or in media.

Yeah a lot of characters are based on a list that will appear to the majority which sucks because a lot of characters lack depth
