Tiana wasn't Naveens second choice? He clearly fell in love with her on their journey. He just needed to kiss that white girl in order to turn back human.
I get him falling in love with her. But at the beginning of the movie, he had the intention of marrying Charlotte. If he never met Tiana, he would’ve married Charlotte, hence why I said Tiana is his second choice.
@@missprofessionalyapper still not really, because when he was going to marry Charlotte he didn’t even know Tiana existed so it wasn’t that Tiana was the second option It was that Charlotte was the only choice. After he met Tiana, he decided he was going to marry Tiana. He loved Tiana but he had to kiss Charlotte to turn back to human.
@@lolilollol8388 regardless, the story could've been written in a way where that wasn't the case imo It's still the only Disney princess story where the prince was supposed to marry someone else (I believe)
He flirted with many women and Tiana needed to ‘earn’ his love. He likely kissed and had sexual relationships with them. It was never suggested with the white princess.
The points about "her is the ONLY second choice", "the ONLY black princess and she was a frog the whole movie", "being made a side character to the white girl", "and being the only princess who had to face the conflicts of her era (racism, when other disney princesses had nazis and shit)" really opened my eyes For soooooo long, I would just roll my eyes whenever someone brought up an argument against the movies. Like- she was literally all I have. A dark-skinned monoracial unambiguous black girl.. and disney does her like this??? I still like the movie, and I think the songs are great, but now I'm not blind to this anymore :(
@SpookyHost I know right- in the original story, the white girl princess isn't a frog the whole movie. She doesn't even turn into one at all, but I guess you didn't know that.
@@MariamaDiallo-fj6ow I mean they couldn't have Naveen turn back into a human as soon as he kissed Tiana, because otherwise the movie would be over. Besides if Tiana doesn't turn into a frog i see no point of letting Naveen escape from the Shadow man i the first place.
That's true! Now, I do like how they made an African American woman a princess. However, I wish her story was more unique and not based on another tale.
I clicked sceptically on this video cause I really love the movie 🥺 But after hearing your points I understand the frustration. It's not a magical fairy tale that one would expect from Disney, it's story about girl whose life is full of struggles, every day she works so hard to build a brighter future and she works, works and works... and when finally magic happens - it's basically a curse 💀 and she continues to struggle but as a frog 💀 and has to help to some manchild 🥲 What you said about second option is also interesting (and SAD) I've never thought from that perspective So, thanks for the vid! Still love the movie but now think it hasn't really met audience needs(
I'm so glad you were willing to hear me out! I was even questioning if I should make this this video or not just because of how loved this movie is to others! I hope Disney will not do us dirty when her show comes out!
The Princess and the Frog is pretty similar to other classic Disney princess movies while also bringing something unique to the table. Tiana’s story may appear less like a typical fairy tale due to its focus on hard work, but when we look closer, it follows many of the same narrative beats as earlier Disney princesses. Take Cinderella, for instance. Like Tiana, she endures a life of hardship, constantly working and striving for a brighter future despite overwhelming challenges. Both characters show resilience, determination, and the belief that their hard work will eventually lead them to a better life. Just as Cinderella had to overcome the abuse of her stepmother and stepsisters, Tiana fights against financial struggles and the societal barriers she faces, particularly as a Black woman in 1920s New Orleans. But at their core, both stories teach that it’s not enough to dream; you also have to put in the effort to make those dreams come true. For the magic part... her transformation is used for a lesson, something often present in Disney films. When a character is turned into something else-whether it's a beast, a bear, or a frog-it’s usually to teach them something valuable. Tiana’s workaholism led her to forget about the other joys in life, like love and friendship. Her transformation into a frog isn’t just a curse; it’s an opportunity for her to discover that life is more than just working toward her goals. What she wants-her restaurant-is important, but what she truly needs is balance, love, and to appreciate the journey along the way. In essence, The Princess and the Frog is indeed a magical fairy tale, with struggles, transformations, and lessons-just like many of the beloved classics before it.
@@paschameleon Well, maybe I expressed my thoughts incorrectly :") I didn't mean that The Princess and the Frog is not a fairy tale, just not the kind an audience was hoping to see (as I gathered from video) Now I see similarities with Cinderella, but there is major difference in the same example - Cinderella's struggles are balanced by magic which provides her exciting wonderful experience, on the other hand, Tiana struggles but faces another obstacle, magical lesson is something she has to overcome once again. Just seems unfair :( .... but maybe it seems that way to me, because I watched both films a long time ago and have already forgotten something 🥲 To be honest the main reason I'm responding is to express my admiration for your writing style... It's a pleasure to read your comment!! 🌸
@@missprofessionalyapperI doubt they will her up (again). Most of their movies (Except Inside Out 2) flopped, and their main source of revenue seems to be Disney Plus. I love your take on the movie that hurts to know how I genuinely loved was used as a prop in a quote “example”, I appreciate your commentary. God bless u
On one hand I love Tiana herself but they did her so wrong. Among many things what really ruined the plot for me was that they set it up for Tiana to get her fairytale ending where a prince sweeps her off her feet but in the end she does all the work. It’s like Disney thinks Black girls would rather be reminded about racism in a princess movie than finally have an escapist fantasy with a princess who looks like them.
You’re mad because Disney movies are realistic but you complain when they’re not? 💀so if Tiana was like all the other princesses, depending on a man, would you complain about it not being progressive?
I honestly have heard more people talking about Tiana than Charlotte... both in scholarship and online social media discourse. People don't really like or care about Charlotte, and she was never meant to be the focus of the movie. The love of the movie comes from Tiana, and the discourse centers around Tiana, Naveen, racism, and a lot of the issues you bring up. Yes, it's problematic that Tiana spent most of her time onscreen as a frog instead of a Black woman. Yes, there's discourse about Charlotte's dad and family and how the "white savior" and anachronistic bullshit is obvious. Yes, it's messed up that Naveen is intentionally racially ambiguous. Yes it's messed up that they kill off Tiana's dad. Trust me, the discourse reflects the frustration that black men get shafted in this story about the "black princess". Charlotte really is a footnote even in the controversies that involve her when talking about why this movie is problematic. Honestly, there's not enough discourse talking about how the movie misrepresents Haitian and African folk religions and practices, nor are there enough discussions about how the Black Disney Princess is still extremely eurocentric.... not just in her appearance but in the fact that it's a European story and how Disney incorporates any culture other than white into the narrative is in really racist and misguided ways. It's pretty gross.
I'm surprised that you haven’t heard that much about Charlotte lol I guess our algorithms are very different! I have seen people talk about the discourse with how Disney represented spiritual practices, even my mom didn’t like what they did with Vodou. I agree with your last point! Anyone who is outside of Eurocentric beliefs was not the target audience for this movie lol
Middle-class blk people existed in the 1920s. Tiana coulda been the daughter of a blk publisher or something arranged to marry Naveen (think "American dollar princess") but slowly grows to like him
This video was awesome!! I loved your point about Charlotte. In college, I and a team of animators were working on a short animated film about a black girl with magical powers in her hair. My professor (who was white), hammered into us that to ensure a wide audience enjoyed our student film, we needed a relatable white character so not to make people feel alienated 🤦🏾♂️ The white character we had at the time was a bully. Ultimately, we had to change the bully into a Hispanic character 😂 My point being, I 100% believe Disney might've forced Charlotte and Big Daddy in the film to leasen the racial tensions 😭 I'm glad I found your channel, you got a new supporter out of me ❤
Omg, I'm sorry your team had to go through that! It's just crazy how we have to accommodate the white audience, but never the other way around smh Thank you so much for your support!! I appreciate it ☺️
The could've pulled a Wakanda or Avalor- like setting showing various of cultures of the African diaspora and give her that traditional Disney princess lifestyle but no. We can't nice things
I watched the movie, but afterward could never remember what happened. It wasn't until someone said she spent the most of the movie as a frog that I realized why - I just as a human cannot relate to animals. Even when I was a child, those little talking doggie movies or whatever I couldn't get behind, the spy babies, though? They were okay, but at least I remember enough to know not to watch them again. When I tried to watch The Princess and the Frog again, I was bored like hell, and afterwards still couldn't remember what happened. Also, I don't appreciate Naveen either. I've heard people say she's marrying up because he comes from money, but he was a lazy party boy who was cut off from his parents cash, looking for a rich girl to con. If Disney is going for realism (in a fairytale princess movie for some reason), then realistically, Naveen's not getting over those traits soon, and most likely spends all the money Tiana earns at her restaurant.
@@matxalenc8410 Ikr it's so hard to relate to animals 😭 I hope in the new show they don't create a storyline with Naveen going back to his ways. Like recklessly spending money especially Tiana’s money lol
I feel like it's important to note that Disney's The Princess and The Frog is not based on the original fairytale of The Frog Prince where the princess never turns into a frog but rather on a novella that was published in 2002 called The Frog Princess. But in that book the protagonist WAS already a princess, so I wonder why they decided to not keep her as a princess when they created Tiana for the Disney movie. I know that Tiana and Princess Emma (from the book) are two completely different characters, since the movie is loosely based on it and not an actual adaptation, but still!
I agree with your perspective! Made me exhausted for Tiana and not relaxed like a normal Disney princess movie. She was stressing and couldn’t rest the entire movie.
Seems like a case of obsessing with making the token the token. If they were going to have a black Disney princess, it can't just be a carefree thing for young black girls to project into and fantasize over (as the other ones were). Instead, it winds up having to become a wagon to a political thing (your mention of segregation and racism). I wonder if the execs felt they were doing something great in doing so by "recognizing the injustice done to this people," when it undermines the spirit of what Disney films are meant to be. I.e., something joyful and entertaining. For the point about nobility, that is tough, at least if we're talking the U.S. as the setting. I guess it depends on how believable you want to make it. I feel like the adults (not the kids) would be critical of it if it had been unbelievable. I think how I would get around it is that, if the U.S. is the setting, we don't really have nobles like the more antiquated settings. So, perhaps Tiana would be the daughter (second or third generation) who was from a wealthy line of descent? That is to say, a black family that maintained old money and status in their region. Agreed on her not turning into a frog. It ruins the projection. lol, hey, at least they didn't turn them into crows or ravens. You mention Tiana helping him, and I think it comes down to them trying to push that "strong independent black woman" thing, as if it's some good thing when, it's a princess film, lol. Obviously not all, but most little girls enjoy imagining being doted upon. No kid is obsessed about "independence" and "take charge" in that manner. On that note, maybe that's why the black people contributing didn't contribute in the right way. As black adults, they might view it through that cynical lense of wanting things related to the past injustices suffered, or displaying black independence, and not showing weakness. As a result, that could keep the film from showing the girl as a princess to be doted on, saved, and exalted. Anyways, good video. (lol sorry for the length, typed as I watched)
You brought up a good point about the people who contributed to the film! I could see why they would position Tiana to be seen more as an image of strength. I think the negative connotation of Disney Princesses being “weak” didn’t help either. Still, it’s ridiculous how we can’t have an easygoing movie of a character who happens to be a black girl. I just want a fantasy not to see my reality 😩
Im sorry but first off, this is what made tiana valued as a character, also i know when your saying "during that time it didnt need to be that way"since to be honest back in the 20s there had been black people OWNING other black people,(also prince naveen is inside a wealthy family)but you do know that this was a very common and overall normal practice right and actually good representation on how it had been back then, ontop of this in my opinion her backstory is what made her character valued and empathized with as the overall feel empathy for the story, just the overall execution and portrayal of black families back then ARE ACCURATE,also your point on how and why the other princesses are treated with different fragrance, its called diversity and different struggled on representing that, look at rapunzel takes place in germany 1600s,they portrayed it well with how culture had looked at that time period, overall my main point is the diversity is different for all ethnicities from representation,i love tianas story and representation because it felt like disney at the time was taking thwre portrayals of diveristy to a more realistic with a fun fictional spinoff, also i love tiana and cant imagine her how she would be if her struggles hadnt made her,she is a representation of working hard even through difficulty and achieving dreams, that is why her story needed to be the way it was ans was in my opinion executed beautifully, anyway i respect your opinion maybe i hopefully opener a different perspective, also ALSO tianas dad dying in ww1 just gives not only more character depth but also adds to more worldbuilding to feel like your in the 1920s,exuse for my essay im just trying to shed light and again a different perspective onto why the story the way it was🫵🫵🫵 Oh also also on your "why does she have to be hyper independent" You do also know that this is how low income regardless of color and age were back then to right? Also it was meant to represent her responsability and strength as a charavter which could be great rolemodeling for kids!also you can fall inlove?!?!😱(snow white 2024 could never)
She didn't say it wasn't accurate to the time period, but it's also a story about princesses and curses and magic, it doesn't need to be 100% realistic, it's fantasy. I don't think it's bad to have your story be realistic but I also don't think an oppressed group's feelings are invalid when they don't want to consume media thats supposed to be escapism but displays the discrimination they already face on a daily basis. Is it accurate? Yeah, nothing to say about that, but for example, as a trans person, I wouldn't watch a movie where the trans main character is constantly being called a tr4nny, if I wanted to see that I could go outside, I don't need a movie for that lmao Not gonna comment on the rest yet because I'm still watching the video, but I do see both of you and OP's points and i think both are valid criticisms/opinions
First of all, I appreciate your comment! I love hearing different opinions! Going off what @snowpawwildcraft6276 said, I believe everything you said was valid especially if Disney was taking a more realistic approach to their movies. I love historical media, but for a fantasy movie for CHILDREN, I believe some historical context can be omitted. Remember Disney Princesses' jobs are mainly to uplift children, not to show them how the world will constantly be against them because of their social identity. Again, I appreciate your comment and it was great to hear another opinion!
@@snowpawwildcraft6276 but you complain about Ariel not being a feminist, make up your mind, do you want it to be realistic or unrealistic 💀 (also I love how you say the movie is too realistic when it shows a friendship between charlotte and Tiana which is something that would never happen in the 1920s)
This is a nothing burger being turned into something it’s not. The father died in the war. I don’t get how you get “absent fathers in black children’s lives.” Her father literally died. Her father taught her the value of ambition & working hard for what you want. That’s what motivates her to be more independent. Tiana wasn’t “second choice” they actively made Naveen a loser with no ambition who wanted to marry Charlotte for her money. He was going to USE Charolette, so when he spends time with Tiana & actually gets to know her, he actually falls in love with her along the way (just like every other Disney), & ends up learning the values that Tiana has. Idk, it’s not that deep, but of course people in today’s time make it into something it’s really not.
i'm very glad more people are being critical to the movie, i'm very much white so it's not really my place to say the representation is off, i think it could've been a really good chance to teach people about saviorism and what to do when you are in a situation like charlotte, you can't actually help someone the way you want to because they don't want it but talking about why they don't want it can be really hard, but i also feel like tiana not wanting it gives her a character flaw they shouldn't have given her, they should've shown a struggling woman who is struggling because of society, not one that hurts herself by overworking herself for her dream. it's great to have a character that is more ambitious and works hard and long for her dream but it's a bit odd that it's the first black princess and that it's someone who's already poor. but at the same time she is besties with a rich girl who throws around money a bit too easily which makes me think tiana never asked her to invest directly out of pride or insecurity but she lacks the ruthlessness for it to be a long con. as well as that the whole movie is about her needing to accept to have more fun and not work so hard and settle for naveen who is the trope of the rich person losing their wealth which i also don't like. tragedy can happen to anyone but he shouldn't be made fun of for not knowing how to do things, we never really see him in his element so we don't know what he or his parents are like. except that he spend too much money so his parents what, disowned him unless he got married which he didn't want to do? and we're just going to ignore that? naveen would have grown up not learning how to deal with people that are a threat to him so he wouldn't be able to get a job, he'd not let anyone boss him around, but now tiana must teach him everything that he never had a need to learn and fall in love with him because... i don't see the chemistry anyway but a workaholic getting with a prince who lost his family doesn't sound romantic, it's not even that naveen deffinitely got his wealth back because tiana solved racism by threatening the bankers with a gator, they have a fancy wedding but it doesn't seem like they'd get taken back as royalty. it's out of toutch on both ends, it just kind of stinks of "a real pirate never steals anyone else's property" of saying that a real princess would do things that they just think sounds as a nice moral for children, i can't quite put my finger on it but the further you dig the more is just, off. although i'm like that with a lot of disney movies, they often have those bits where the writers don't put enough weight on things that they did write like jasmine's father being abusive not noticing he could just change the law all along, idk i just already like things to be neat and clear and princess and the frog is textbook "this story didn't get enough time for rewrites"
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! I’m so glad this is becoming more of a discussion because it is very concerning how Disney was even able to release this movie even with all these issues smh
Tiana is such a well-written character, but she stays a frog for most of the film. I wish we'd gotten another black princess by now. Asha was originally supposed to join the line, but given how terribly written she was, I'm glad they didn't.
@@missprofessionalyapper Given the documentary for how "Frozen 2" was made, Amaya's VA saying Magnifico was originally a good king while Amaya was the only villain, and Julia Michaels saying they were only given a storyboard each time they came in to write a song and had no real idea of what was going on, it's not shocking that the film was a trainwreck. I really would've preferred Asha as a shy girl (in contrast to all the extroverted Disney princesses) or a Kuzco-like character who starts off selfish but learns to care for others. For a 100th anniversary film, it should've been deep and thought-provoking, not a poor parody of Disney's own image.
Yeah, I heard about that as well! The whole process of the film was disorganized, and we could tell that the creation of this movie was just for profit
@@missprofessionalyapper I find it odd that it failed spectacularly when it was supppsed to be an a huge film. Also found it strange that they didn't use the same crew as "Gigantic," which was also planned to be a fairy tale musical set in Spain.
Tiana is one of the prettiest, most intelligent hard-working girls in general. She's much more attractive than Lottie (I do love Lottie lol she reminds me of me as a little girl) but that scene where Tiana comes out in her blue dress and Lottie tells her she's as pretty as a magnolia moonlight. Her sadness is so poignant and beautiful. While she is a good friend, Lottie still didn't understand why she was upset. Tiana deserves every good thing that happens to her and she should have been able to stay human the whole time. I think the movie takes a downgrade when they move to the swamp and she's turned into a frog... Why?! Hello do we turn Cinderella into a frog? Did we turn Ariel into one no we turned her human! Oh and guess what Tiana has the best voice of any Disney heroine!!! To be honest I love every outfit that she's in and I think she has an absolutely lovely family. I'm so glad she got her restaurant in the end. I'm also glad that they weren't afraid to still make the villain African-American, play they just didn't say oh well we need a white person to be the villain because yeah. It didn't really matter, the Shadow Man was a scumbag either way. I'm glad that she finally told someone who was spoiled their whole life, someone like Naveen, what she should have been able to say all her life. I'm really sorry that Tiana is the only black princess, I do love Ariel and Belle, it's great that they're having Moana Two but I infinitely want to see a TV show with Tiana and Naveen in it. Maybe they can hire a lobby as a bus girl but they have the stock market crash 😅😅😅
About the second choice thing I don’t think she was.. in the movie the prince was set to marry a woman with a rich daddy, because his family was going broke. The prince didn’t even get a chance really to meet the rich white girl because he was turned into a frog and then he met Tiana and if you watch that scene where he meets Tiana for the first time, he thinks she is pretty enough to be a princess and he asks her to kiss him because a princess kissing him would turn him back to a prince. From what I just said clearly she wasn’t a second choice She wasn’t even an option before then. The Prince never even got a chance to meet Charlotte and if he did meet her and marry her, it would’ve been off obligation and because she was the only option. when he meet Tiana he already thought she was pretty/pretty enough to kiss him/pretty enough to be a princess, and if it were to work if Tiana was actually a princess and was able to turn him back into a prince. He would’ve probably married her, and even though it didn’t end up working, he still ended up marrying Tiana because of how charming and gorgeous she is. You see she was never a second choice, She was never an option before he met her. the way you talk is like he already knew both Charlotte and Tiana, but decided that he was going to marry Charlotte Because she was the pretty white girl but clearly that wasn’t the case, and you were just trying to make it into a Disney is racist type of thing
Regardless, it’s still just weird how Tiana is the ONLY Princess who had to share the attention of a Prince with another character. I understand people saying how Naveen fell in love with Tiana not Charlotte, which is factual. But if that was the plan from the get-go…why did they have to start the movie off with Naveen intentionally seeking out a date with Charlotte? Believe me, I would love to watch a kid's movie and not find it to be “racist.” However, if it’s consistently being done in other media, it’s hard to ignore it.
I feel there's an alternative universe where they made her above the struggles black people face day to day, and the movie gets ripped apart for sweeping racism under the rug. Like the maid in Tom and Jerry. I always assumed it was Her house. Then they made her white and it's like "who this?" But removing her caused an uproar because it was erasing history.
Hmm, I would disagree. I think there would be some people who would be mad that Disney didn’t address racism in the film. However, I believe the greater majority would be in support of it. Just because we have so many movies already constantly using racism as a way to build character development. Now for Tom & Jerry, I did not like her character because it’s historically accurate. I think the reason why people were in an uproar was not because they were “erasing history” but because they were rewriting their wrongdoings. It’s like Peter Pan and their disgusting representation of Native Americans. Disney couldn’t erase that scene from their movies because if they did then it’s like they were pretending that their racism never existed. Anyways thank you for sharing your thoughts! It really made me think haha
@@missprofessionalyapper Now now. That Peter Pan scene is amazing. I would love to take a time machine to the premier, and invite native American chiefs and set right next to Walt Disney himself. "call Disney"😂😂cute i like to think Tiana was almost not a Princess. She aligns more with Meg from Hercules? My first thought about her is she's a business woman. And it felt more about the ✨American dream✨ then it did about romance. Naveen was still cool though- bit of a manchild at times but he meant well and he grew eventually? *HE WAS **_very_** CHARISMATIC* 😂
Ooo I can totally see the parallels between Tiana and Megan!! lol okay, I admit he is somewhat charismatic, but it’s hard to admit that when he was a frog most of the time 😭 Hopefully the new show will give him more time to shine as a HUMAN 😅

I could write an entire book right now about my love for this video and subject!!! I HATED the "princess" and the frog, as much as I hated the movie SOUL, for the same reasons. IF they feature Black people at all, they turn us into animals and decentralize us in favor of the oppressors. Then they act like we are supposed to be happy about. If you are starving and I hand you a plate filled with actual poop, *_TECHNICALLY,_* you have something you can eat, but...DO YOU, Really? That is what Disney and others do to us all the time. I can't stand Christopher Nolan movies. They are usually over bloated, poorly directed crap. And he ALWAYS features white men only. But after so many films and people calling him out about it, what did he do? He creates the movie *TENET* but he not only makes it THE most confusing, idiotic film ever made, but *he **_refuses to even give the Black main character A NAME!!!_** He is only referred to as "The Protagonist."* THIS is what they do, and it is irritating on a soul deep level. Anyhoo, thank you so much for this video. I'm glad I saw it, and I thank you for taking the time to make it. Blessings to you!!!
It's so frustrating how our thoughts about this only get ignored! That's exactly why I refused to watch Soul because it seemed like they were only going to sprout that same narrative again. I swear people in the entertainment industry need to educate themselves on being aware that there are more audiences than just the white ones. Thank you so much for commenting and blessings to you as well!!
@@missprofessionalyapper White people rarely think about race when they think about making a movie because it's never been a struggle for them, so they don't pick up on all the choices (though i'd say we are fine today but not quite because of what I'm about to say), it's more about using token black characters that usually are never african americans... African americans are being under-represented over british africans, asian africans, and Indian/french/etc etc etc. Any light skin african is the first choice for some reason, or someone with an accent...like it's illegal to be darker than cofee with cream. I really don't love how more people from other countries are entering our country and pretending to have african american qualities when they have never experienced the ULTRA specific history african americans have gone through. I'm a little confused about your point minus the white people who are her savior - part. Isn't this a good idea for a movie, you seemingly don't want racism to be at all associated but also feel weird having a white friend that just treats her as a friend? Remember that our country is a very 50 sided country, every area is different. I was watching a case with Levittown (THE ultimate white neighborhood of the late 1940s-1950s) and they were talking about the Myers family, which would be the first black family to move in to the area. There was an interview with tons of people in 1956 and 2 of the people interviewed said they both had black friends while living in the south. I kind of didn't expect that. There was a toll for those who wanted the Myers to move in and those who didn't, and it was 2,000 neighbors who wanted the Myers out, and 24,000 that wanted them in. Of course, the Myers were moving in regardless, but they just wanted to know how people felt. There was also a 1954 recording informercial encouraging racist owners to sell to "negro people" which was a common term for black people, and to treat them like they'd treat any white shopper. It really is eye opening to the REAL time in the past, not just the unfortunate headlines or stories of random individuals. So what I'm hinting at here, is maybe their trying to slightly romanticize the era to a realistic degree, to showcase that good people definitely existed at the time, while still making it a "work to make your way in society" kind of movie. Would be nice if Disney left out the racism aspect but then a lot of watchers would be up in arms.
It wasn't weird for Tiana to have a white friend..what was weird was having Lottie be such a focal point in Tiana’s movie. Sure, they had a nice friendship, but if you create a friendship dynamic with a more outgoing and reserved character. Oftentimes the reserved character gets overshadowed (which was in Tiana’s case). Idk Disney trying to insert a white character in a movie that had a dark-skinned woman (which is rarer to see nowadays smh) rubbed me the wrong way. It made it even worse when the movie romanticized the Jim Crow era and the socioeconomic divide that is still happening in Louisiana today Thank you so much for the comment!! 💕

I agree, but I think they were trying to showcase that Lottie didn't win the prince in the end despite being the successful rich girl. Should have made Tiana as a hard working girl in Manhattan. That would have been way funner anyway
I was on your side until you said she was Naveen’s second choice. Girl did you watch the movie?? His whole life people looked at him and saw “Prince”. Tiana was the first person to look at him and see “Naveen” and that’s why he fell in love with her. You have a point about her being turned into a frog that’s kind of a trope, and it would have been more powerful if she’d had nothing to gain by helping Naveen, in fact losing out on time she could be using to dig herself out of her financial hole and she helped him anyway because she’s that way. Just because no one helps her doesn’t mean she has to be that way too. I would have preferred that, she woulda been a little like Cinderella then. As for Charlotte, she was adorable and I’ll not hear a word against her. She was nothing but supportive of Tiana and I think her being there emphasized the “all walks of life” of Tiana’s dream. Being such a great cook she was already kinda doing her dream because big daddy probably has a private chef at home but he goes to this little diner because they have delicious beniets. Did I spell that right? I really respect that Tiana wouldn’t take handouts. I like that about her character but I do see the “the black princess has to earn it” being problematic. I too would love to see a movie where the black princess was always a princess. That sounds great, I’d watch it. But I also love this one because Tiana is amazing and while Belle will always be my Disney princess I really relate to Tiana too. If I got to pick 5 it would probably be Belle, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana and Rapunzel.
I watched the movies several times actually lol I just didn't like how a side character was so present in Tiana’s movie. Charlotte is a great character, but she really overshadowed Tiana and that's fair to say. Other than that, I know a lot of people love Tiana. I love her as well, but I wish she had more time in the movie for others to help her. Anyways, thank you for sharing your points! 😊
One issue I have is they pose restaurant ownership as a happy ending she started working till she puked and ended working till she puked they made restaurant management look too glamorous in the song almost there and this is coming from someone who's family has been in the restaurant business since the great depression plus the 1920s had a different restaurant culture than today america only made tipping mandatory because of the great depression it was a thing before that no one liked it because it seemed condescending and classist but because of the depression everyone was hurting for money so some restraunts could no longer pay the servers so the servers had to now reley on this irregular and to them insulting practice to make ends meet and there is also a long and still ongoing practice of sexism in professional kitchens because working in pro kitchens was seen as mens work this is touched on in ratatouille but not touched on nearly as clearly in this film also Neveen I felt sorry for him cuz besides the butler and the shadowman the real bad guys in his story arch are his parents if they didn't want him to be a womanizer and wanted him to be a proper leader they should have spent some more time paying attention to the education of their royal Air yes you have a country to run but if you are this easily embarrassed and want him to be more serious pay attention to him guide him discipline him or pay a nanny and tutor to teach him and take care of him and do progress reports on how his education is doing tell him his flirting has diplomatic consequences I know Government stuff is tough but the upbringing of the royal air and his brother is just as important as economic stuff housing and infrastructure
@@jennybrown7834 I agree that she didn’t really get that “fairytale ending” which was unfortunate. Though I’m proud of her getting her restaurant…it still felt as though the ending was missing something
@missprofessionalyapper It kinda felt like she was living her dad's life more than her own it felt like she didn't have any interests or anything to her personality other than restaurant both her and Neveen could have done with some elements to flesh there characters out more cuz it feels like you could fill a post it note with all there character traits as is and her romance with Neveen felt shoehorned in like she was only dateing/ getting married to him to shut her mom and mama odie up about not being married yet( at the age of 19? Not weird for the time period but its weirder that everyones getting on her case about it they are treating her like shes 24 or 26 or something) and also turn human again and repay him? But that seems both out of character and he didn't really do anything to much to help so there would be nothing to repay cinderella and snow white had really short romances too but they at least clicked together with there princes
Yeah, I agree! Tiana getting into a relationship and then married seemed off (considering her personality and priorities on achieving her restaurant). I wish Tiana and Naveen had more time together as humans first before getting married. I believe it would have aligned more on how Tiana is as a person. Hopefully in the new show, they will explore their relationship dynamics. Also, maybe we will see her pick up more interests or goals to partake in outside of her restaurant!
They also changed the story a lot. In the original the princess was a real princess and never a frog at all. Also the princess was originally white so that was the first Disney race swap. I say give diverse characters their own story not just race swaps; make it relevant to the ethnicity of the characters but not squish our faces in it. I story about an African orphan (because there really are orphans in Africa ) who gets adopted by rich people and has a real Prince fall for her would be a good story kind of like Annie but including her growing up and finding love and also learning about ways she could help her people.
Honestly, I can understand why everyone feels why they do about Tiana, but better that they made a black princess turn into a frog than not make one at all, right? And besides, there's been some projects where she's human throughout the duration. By that, I mean the Disneyland Adventures videogame, and there's a sequel series in the works called "Tiana's Place", which doesn't seem to have as much of an emphasis on frog Tiana. Also, if it's any consolation, Kida was a POC, and she was a human throughout both Atlantis movies (albeit of a rather formerly advanced sort), so there's that
But that's the problem. Why do we have to see Tiana to be human in a game?? Why couldn't they put that in the movie? Like, having Tiana as a Princess was nice, but it was not exceptional
I absolutely agree with your points in this video. Tiana is what I call a "struggle princess". The other princesses were "saved" by their prince. Meanwhile, Tiana pretty much did all the work. _LITERALLY._ And at the end she's STILL working. Narratively speaking, she is shown to _LOVE_ working. Why can't we have a luxurious life like the White princesses? It's like society as a whole is telling us that we are not worthy of luxary. Initially, I was SO happy when Tiana was shown not only to be Blavk, but to be an unambiguously Black woman. Normally when media makes a feminine Black character she is either light skinned or biracial. We as dark skinned women are usually masculinized; we are the mammies, thr bullies, the servants, or made to be story's villains. But after seeing the film, I IMMEDIATELY understood _why_ she was made dark skinned; because she was a work mule. 😑 And I don't understand why people are disagressing with you about Tiana being a "second choice;" she ABSOLUTELY was the second choice, here. It was _Lottie_ who was Naveen's target. I also disliked the design of Tiana's swamp "princess" dress. And I already know that I will get hate for this, but it just... wasn't flattering on her. She was SO beautiful in Lottie's sparkly blue evening gown (that Tiana's mom likely made) and tiara at the beginning of the movie. Apparently even _Naveen_ thought so since he assumed that she was a princess. WHY couldn't Tiana get a dress like that for HER princess dress? And in a more flattering shade of green? The whole moral of the movie seemed to be that a Black girl isn't valuable unless she's working herself to the bone; and then she MIGHT get herself a -dusty, adulterous, freeloading, broke- man whom she will ultimately end up having to take care of. Just being in proximity of him got her turned into a frog! Naveen was DISINHERITED at the beginning of the film. He was in town to find himself a rich, young hunny to live off of. Yes, his parents gave him a princely wedding but it was never explicitly stated whether or not he was reinstated or not. The fact that he has this much time to hang out with Tiana at her restaurant tells me that he HAS no princely duties anymore, so I'm going to assume that he is still a defunct prince with a useless title who will never rule. Ironically, enough this is something that happened historically. RUclipsr _Tea Time with Lindsay Holiday_ has a video about broke British aristocrats with worthless titles who would offer marriage to rich American socialites. The American socialites were giddy at the thought of being princesses and duchesses and ladies, and in return the broke British aristocrats would get their hands on some much needed cash. This was done all throughout history and it's depressing that Tiana got taken in by this useless prince. 😢
Yes, she was definitely a “struggle princess”! I hate how when we have dark-skinned black women in movies they are struggling 😭 This movie could’ve been a great opportunity for Hollywood to break this common trope but like always they failed smh
3:53 Asha is Afro-Iberian, and I thought you were going to mention Ariel (because of the live action and her Disney Junior series) and even then, Asha is not an official Disney Princess anyway, I checked the website.
As far as I know, the only thing Asha had in common with the princesses is that she was supposed to have a love interest. But, in at least 2 of the concept designs, he looked brown, so Disney had him turned into a marketable plushy.
I think she is technically the first, but her films didn't receive as much attention smh. I guess that's why they didn't bother giving her the official Disney Princess title. Very unfortunate
I’m really excited to see another princess on screen after they get married! I just hope Disney does not pull another stunt in having either of the two turn into frogs again lol 🙄
It's not hatred..its respectful criticism of a movie that was targeted at a specific demographic, but unfortunately Disney dropped the ball on it 🤷🏾♀️
I watched it when I was little and I always felt like having them be frogs for the majority of the movie was a bit of a waste? Don't get me wrong, it makes sense but I also can't take the emotional moments seriously when they're anthropomorphic frogs. Plus their character designs are so pretty, I feel like we could've gotten a few more scenes with them atleast
It was such a waste! Like why would you waste the potential of Tiana being a human when her mom is a seamstress! I'm just so sad that we couldn't see the dresses that her mom could've made for her 🥺
i wnat to support ur opinion on this yes , u got points but the problem is this ,the OG ver. was more worst ver of then the one i love . besides they didnt have much info too
I get what ur saying but lmao being poor is so tied to black culture. What I don't like is hie they handled her white friend and yes the fact she had to marry a prince to become a "princess" but yeah It would've been more more influential with more historical context
Oof to the first statement 😭 I don’t believe it’s entirely related to black culture. Other cultures have lower socioeconomic classes as well! Yeah, they could’ve gone a different way when creating this movie
This comment is very off poverty is part of every culture not just black be so for real the richest man in history was a black African king to this day his wealth is hard to reach them making her poor was racist and intended for minds like yours not ours I mean in at least 10 countries in Europe you can't even drink the water that's how bad their economy is
Black oriole need to go back and reread their history. I don’t know how you just are still trying to find an issue with this mi ie when there was nine.
Tiana, Kuzco, & Kenai spent most of their movies as animals(frog, llama, bear). Their common denominator? They were POC.
@@aliasfakename3159 Exactly 😭 this is such a problem!! I'm going to do a video about it because the media loves to dehumanize POC characters
@@lolilollol8388 regardless, the story could've been written in a way where that wasn't the case imo
It's still the only Disney princess story where the prince was supposed to marry someone else (I believe)
@@MariamaDiallo-fj6owwell most stories have obstacles for the characters to overcome Charlotte is basically an obstacle to get ti Tiana
He flirted with many women and Tiana needed to ‘earn’ his love. He likely kissed and had sexual relationships with them. It was never suggested with the white princess.
The points about "her is the ONLY second choice", "the ONLY black princess and she was a frog the whole movie", "being made a side character to the white girl", "and being the only princess who had to face the conflicts of her era (racism, when other disney princesses had nazis and shit)" really opened my eyes
For soooooo long, I would just roll my eyes whenever someone brought up an argument against the movies. Like- she was literally all I have. A dark-skinned monoracial unambiguous black girl.. and disney does her like this??? I still like the movie, and I think the songs are great, but now I'm not blind to this anymore :(
Well,it is princess and the frog?
I know it sucks 🥺 when I was researching for this video, it made me so sad how dirty Disney did Tiana because as you said, she’s all that we have 🤧
@@missprofessionalyapper in the original drafts of the movie they were even planning to make Tiana a slave too!
Disney could’ve easily just actually researched then produce an animated film based upon African fairytales and folklore.
That's true! Now, I do like how they made an African American woman a princess. However, I wish her story was more unique and not based on another tale.
You are 100 right with Charlotte over overshadowing Tiana I remember when they were promoting the movie they would show her more then Tiana.
It was so weird when I saw that as a child too
Why are you marketing another girl in a Disney Princess movie?? 🙄
I never thought she overshadowed Tiana.
I clicked sceptically on this video cause I really love the movie 🥺 But after hearing your points I understand the frustration. It's not a magical fairy tale that one would expect from Disney, it's story about girl whose life is full of struggles, every day she works so hard to build a brighter future and she works, works and works... and when finally magic happens - it's basically a curse 💀 and she continues to struggle but as a frog 💀 and has to help to some manchild 🥲
What you said about second option is also interesting (and SAD) I've never thought from that perspective
So, thanks for the vid!
@@paschameleon Well, maybe I expressed my thoughts incorrectly :") I didn't mean that The Princess and the Frog is not a fairy tale, just not the kind an audience was hoping to see (as I gathered from video)
Now I see similarities with Cinderella, but there is major difference in the same example - Cinderella's struggles are balanced by magic which provides her exciting wonderful experience, on the other hand, Tiana struggles but faces another obstacle, magical lesson is something she has to overcome once again. Just seems unfair :(
.... but maybe it seems that way to me, because I watched both films a long time ago and have already forgotten something 🥲
To be honest the main reason I'm responding is to express my admiration for your writing style...
Right the ending felt so mediocre 😭 it was definitely missing that fantasy effect
Tiana's dream was to own her own restaurant, and she achieves that. She's a hard worker, and we see Naveen helping her too.
Tiana coulda been the daughter of a blk publisher or something arranged to marry Naveen (think "American dollar princess") but slowly grows to like him
@@aliasfakename3159 LITERALLY! There were so many ways in which they could’ve created her backstory!
This video was awesome!! I loved your point about Charlotte. In college, I and a team of animators were working on a short animated film about a black girl with magical powers in her hair.
My professor (who was white), hammered into us that to ensure a wide audience enjoyed our student film, we needed a relatable white character so not to make people feel alienated 🤦🏾♂️
The white character we had at the time was a bully. Ultimately, we had to change the bully into a Hispanic character 😂
My point being, I 100% believe Disney might've forced Charlotte and Big Daddy in the film to leasen the racial tensions 😭
I'm glad I found your channel, you got a new supporter out of me ❤
Omg, I'm sorry your team had to go through that! It's just crazy how we have to accommodate the white audience, but never the other way around smh
Thank you so much for your support!! I appreciate it ☺️
The could've pulled a Wakanda or Avalor- like setting showing various of cultures of the African diaspora and give her that traditional Disney princess lifestyle but no. We can't nice things
Yep we just get the bare minimum or even less than that
I watched the movie, but afterward could never remember what happened.
@@matxalenc8410 Ikr it's so hard to relate to animals 😭
I hope in the new show they don't create a storyline with Naveen going back to his ways. Like recklessly spending money especially Tiana’s money lol
OMG girl this gagged me LMAO GAGED him spending her hard earned money so true dang your comment deserves awareness 👏🏾 😂
She literally had me feeling like I was fighting for my life in the Bayou lol 😭
Oh my gosh yes.
I love the mom introduction 😂
I love their videos!! She is so cute!
Im sorry but first off, this is what made tiana valued as a character, also i know when your saying "during that time it didnt need to be that way"since to be honest back in the 20s there had been black people OWNING other black people,(also prince naveen is inside a wealthy family)but you do know that this was a very common and overall normal practice right and actually good representation on how it had been back then, ontop of this in my opinion her backstory is what made her character valued and empathized with as the overall feel empathy for the story, just the overall execution and portrayal of black families back then ARE ACCURATE,also your point on how and why the other princesses are treated with different fragrance, its called diversity and different struggled on representing that, look at rapunzel takes place in germany 1600s,they portrayed it well with how culture had looked at that time period, overall my main point is the diversity is different for all ethnicities from representation,i love tianas story and representation because it felt like disney at the time was taking thwre portrayals of diveristy to a more realistic with a fun fictional spinoff, also i love tiana and cant imagine her how she would be if her struggles hadnt made her,she is a representation of working hard even through difficulty and achieving dreams, that is why her story needed to be the way it was ans was in my opinion executed beautifully, anyway i respect your opinion maybe i hopefully opener a different perspective, also ALSO tianas dad dying in ww1 just gives not only more character depth but also adds to more worldbuilding to feel like your in the 1920s,exuse for my essay im just trying to shed light and again a different perspective onto why the story the way it was🫵🫵🫵
Oh also also on your "why does she have to be hyper independent"
You do also know that this is how low income regardless of color and age were back then to right?
Yeah, nothing to say about that, but for example, as a trans person, I wouldn't watch a movie where the trans main character is constantly being called a tr4nny, if I wanted to see that I could go outside, I don't need a movie for that lmao
Not gonna comment on the rest yet because I'm still watching the video, but I do see both of you and OP's points and i think both are valid criticisms/opinions
First of all, I appreciate your comment! I love hearing different opinions!
Going off what @snowpawwildcraft6276 said,
I believe everything you said was valid especially if Disney was taking a more realistic approach to their movies.
I had such high hopes for Asha, but it's so disappointing how they did her movie 😭
I wish we saw more of her mom’s dresses on Tiana rather than on Lottie. That would have been a cute mother-and-daughter moment! 🥺
Then they made her white and it's like "who this?"
But removing her caused an uproar because it was erasing history.
"That's the story of the Red Man, the Real, True story of The Red Man. No matter what is written or said, That's why Red Man Red!~"
"This is a fantastic movie Walter. I'm learning so much today. Thank you for specifying that This is the story. The real true story. Regardless of what people have written or said. This is what happened."
.>
"Did he run away? Anyway... I'm off to the next premier. Got more people to invite too."
Walt: "Stop inviting people to my movies! Keep expecting someone to come knocking at my door."
Me: "I Am the one who knocks!"
"call Disney"😂😂cute
i like to think Tiana was almost not a Princess.
@@missprofessionalyapper
I think something that made me like Naveen even more retroactively, was me relating to that struggle of “Not knowing how to do anything” obviously not to the extent he had it, but it was a very relatable insecurity.
Hmm, I never saw it that way! I will probably rewatch the movie again from that viewpoint! Thank you for sharing!!
@@mr.j3rs3y oh yes, so it works like a shortcoming he didn't realise he had. He was "rich and handsome" but suddenly he needed life skills and he was forced to ponder like ," am I.. _not all that???_ " (because he lacked the authority to have people serve him as well so yk 🤷🏾♀but it resulted in decent character growth on his end).
@@missprofessionalyapperwe deserve human Naveen bro😭😭 AND TIANA.
It made it even worse when the movie romanticized the Jim Crow era and the socioeconomic divide that is still happening in Louisiana today
Thank you so much for the comment!! 💕
@@missprofessionalyapper Industry's hire EVERYONE, so you will find good and bad people working together, where it only becomes clear during their work.
I watched the movies several times actually lol
I just didn't like how a side character was so present in Tiana’s movie.
Yes, I agree! They should’ve based Tiana on something that has never been done before!
I hate how when we have dark-skinned black women in movies they are struggling 😭
This movie could’ve been a great opportunity for Hollywood to break this common trope but like always they failed smh
